MSOC Seeking First BE Men’s Tourney TitleThe Creighton men’s soccer team is looking to become the first Creighton men’s team to win a BIG EAST Tournament title in any sport.

Across all sports, Creighton has played in 13 BIG EAST Tournament championship games, but only the volleyball program has won a title.

The volleyball team is 4-1 in the BIG EAST title

matches, with victories in 2014 (over Seton Hall), 2015 (Villanova), 2016 (Xavier) and 2017 (Marquette). Creighton’s other teams to reach the finals include its baseball team (0-3), the men’s soccer team (0-2), the men’s basketball team (0-2) and the women’s basketball team (0-1).

The Bluejay men’s soccer team’s two BIG EAST title match appearances came in 2015 (2-1 double overtime loss at Georgetown) and 2016 (2-1 loss at Butler).

The Creighton men’s soccer program captured 13 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament titles as a member of the conference from 1991-2012 (22 seasons).

Bluejays All-BIG EAST SelectionsCreighton men’s soccer seniors Sven Koenig and Joel Rydstrand each earned BIG EAST Men’s Soccer major awards and a total of five Bluejays claimed spots on the All-BIG EAST teams, the league announced on Friday afternoon.

Koenig earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year accolades and Rydstrand was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year. Additionally, the Creighton coaching staff, led by eighth-year head coach Elmar Bolowich, earned the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year award after leading the Bluejays to the regular-season crown with a 7-1-1 league record.

Koenig, Rydstrand and Akeem Ward each made the All-BIG EAST First Team, while Mitch LaGro and Paul Kruse made the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Kruse also earned unanimous selection to the league’s All-Freshman Team.

A native of Westhofen, Germany, Koenig led the BIG EAST in goals during the regular season with 10, including seven during league play.

During all matches, the senior averages 2.06 shots on goal per match, which ranks sixth nationally, and owns a shot accuracy of .614, which ranks 13th-best among Division I players.

Alphabetical Roster

Koenig is the third Creighton player to be named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, joining Ricky Lopez-Espin (2017) and Fabian Herbers (2014, 2015) as the Bluejays have claimed conference offensive player of the year accolades four out of the past five seasons.

In addition to his major award, Koenig was also the lone player unanimously selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team.

Rydstrand heads into the postseason as Creighton’s leader in assists with five. The Almunge, Sweden native, tied for the league lead with four assists during nine league matches. He also ranked second on the team for shots (19) and minutes played (831) during BIG EAST action.

The senior owns 23 careers assists during 81 matches played, which ranks tied for 11th on Creighton’s career assists list. He is one of four Bluejays to start each match this season and has not missed a match during his four-year career in Omaha, which includes starts in all but one of those contests.

Rydstrand earned BIG EAST All-Freshman team honors in 2015.

He is the third Bluejay to be named the league’s midfielder of the year (also Ricardo Perez, 2016 and Timo Pitter, 2014 and 2015) and Creighton boasts four BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year honors since 2014.

Ward earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team and enters the postseason second on the Bluejays in points with eight from two goals and four assists. The Vienna, Virginia native missed a total of 36 minutes of game action during 17 matches.

LaGro, one of six seniors on this year’s squad, did not miss a minute of action during BIG EAST play while helping the Bluejay defense allow a BIG EAST-low six goals over the course of nine league matches. The Dallas, Texas native, also had four shot attempts, including one on goal. LaGro also made the All-BIG EAST Second Team as a sophomore in 2016.

Kruse currently ranks 12th nationally with a 0.624 goals against average while playing all 1,588 possible minutes in goal. He also owns seven shutouts. During BIG EAST play, the Heilbronn, Germany native, allowed only six goals -- the best mark in the league -- and earned four shutouts.

In addition to his All-BIG EAST Second Team selec-tion, Kruse was also one of four players to be unanimously selected to the All-Freshman Team.

Under the direction of head coach Elmar Bolowich and assistants Johnny Torres, Michael Gabb and Mitch Kavanagh, the Bluejays finished the

regular-season 11-4-2 overall and 7-1-1 in league play for their first BIG EAST regular-season title since 2014. Creighton finished BIG EAST play with the best marks in goals (16), points (48) and goals allowed (6), while listing second in goals against average (0.65) and shutouts (4).

Last Time OutCreighton fell 2-1 in overtime to Georgetown during the regular-season finale on Oct. 31 at Morrison Stadium.

The Bluejays fell to 11-4-2 overall and finished 7-1-1 during BIG EAST play, while the Hoyas improved to 10-4-3 overall and earned a 6-2-1 mark in league play.

Georgetown’s Derek Dodson converted the game-winning goal during the 93rd minute. Kyle Zajec sent in a corner kick from the bench side of the field before the ball skimmed across a few players in the box and fell to the feet of Dodson who slotted the ball into the back of the net.

The Bluejays gained a 1-0 lead during the 25th minute as Sven Koenig scored his BIG-EAST best 10th goal of the year. The senior recovered the ball inside the right side of the 18-yard box after a pass from Younes Boudadi before placing the ball between the near post and Georgetown’s Giannis Nikopolidis in goal. Boudadi and Julius Fohr each recorded assists on the play.

Georgetown knotted the match at 1-1 during the 65th minute. Peter Schropp placed a free kick from about 20 yards out inside the far post and into the back of the net.

Georgetown recorded the only shot during overtime with its golden goal less than three minutes into the extra period.

Koenig paced Creighton with seven shots, six on goal, as the Bluejays held a slight 14-13 advantage in shots, including 11-8 on goal.

Creighton Matches Best BE Regular-Season MarkThe Bluejays finished 7-1-1 in league play for the second time since joining the conference. Creighton also went 7-1-1 on its way to the 2014 BIG EAST regular-season crown.

The Bluejays started league play 5-0-0 for the second time since joining the conference in 2013.

Creighton went unbeaten through its first eight conference contests (7-0-1) for the first time since joining the BIG EAST prior to the 2013 season.

The Bluejays’ last unbeaten conference season was 2012 (5-0-1), the program’s last year in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Scoring First, Leading At Half Produces SuccessUnder the direction of head coach Elmar Bolowich, the Bluejays are 100-10-4 when scoring first, and 67-3-3 when leading at the half.

This season, Creighton is 11-1-0 when scoring first and 5-1-0 when leading at the half.

Comparatively, the Bluejays are 15-30-4 when the opposition scores first, 7-18-2 when trailing at halftime, and 41-19-11 when the score is tied after 45 minutes of play (since start of 2011 season).

The Bluejays’ last two losses when scoring first both came against Georgetown (Oct. 31, 2018 and Nov. 1, 2017).

Creighton’s three losses when leading at the half with Bolowich as head coach occurred on Oct. 31 against Georgetown, Sept. 16, 2017 at Butler and Oct. 11, 2016 at Tulsa.

Creighton Ranked No. 30 In Latest RPICreighton was listed 30th in the most recent official NCAA RPI released on Monday, Nov. 5.

The Bluejays are one of two BIG EAST schools in the top 50 of the RPI (Georgetown, No. 16). The conference has a total of five schools listed in the top 100 (of 206 Division I programs).

Bluejays Ranked 17th in Coaches PollThe Creighton men’s soccer team will enter postseason play ranked 17th in the United Soccer Coaches poll, as the organization released the rankings on Tuesday.

The BIG EAST regular-season champion Bluejays ended the regular season with an 11-4-2 overall record and will host a BIG EAST semifinal match on Wednesday against Marquette. Kickoff at Morrison Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Creighton fell three spots from last week’s ranking

following a 2-1 overtime loss against Georgetown during the regular-season finale.

Creighton is one of two BIG EAST schools listed in this week’s poll as Georgetown checked in at No. 19.

The top six in the rankings remained unchanged as Wake Forest received 27 out of 28 possible first-place votes. Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Saint Mary’s and Stanford rounded out the top six.

Creighton Reaches Double-Digit Victory PlateauWith Creighton’s victory against Marquette (Oct. 24) the Bluejays have now won 10 or more matches six out of Elmar Bolowich’s eight seasons at Creighton.

The Bluejays have also qualified for the NCAA Tournament 24 out of the last 26 seasons.

The two times Creighton did not make the NCAAs (2009, 2017) were two out of three years since 1990 in which the program failed to reach the 10-win plateau.

The Bluejays reached the NCAA tourney and ended the season with only nine victories in 2013.

The Bluejays are 21-1-2 in their next home match following a home loss at Morrison, including an 0-0-1 mark this season.

Creighton went 7-1-1 during 2017 at home and is 54-10-7 at Morrison Stadium since the start of 2013 when the program joined the BIG EAST.

Overtime WoesHead coach Elmar Bolowich led the Bluejays to an unbeaten mark during his first 10 OT matches at Creighton (6-0-4).

Since those first 10 matches, the Bluejays are 3-9-11 during overtime matches, with two of those OT victories coming during last season (2017).

This season Creighton is 0-2-2 during matches that have required more than regulation time to complete, including the Bluejays’ 2-1 loss to Georgetown during the regular-season finale.

None of Creighton’s active goalkeepers have participated in a shootout, and the Bluejays have not allowed a penalty kick opportunity this season.

Multiple Wins By Opponent At Morrison StadiumSix different schools have defeated Creighton twice at Morrison Stadium.

Georgetown became the sixth school to accomplish that feat with its 2-1 overtime win on Oct. 31. The Hoyas also defeated Creighton at Morrison Stadium on Oct. 25, 2014.

Providence is the only school to defeat the Bluejays twice at Morrison Stadium during the same season. The Friars posted a 1-0 win during the 2016 regular season before earning a 2-1 victory during a 2016 NCAA Tournament match.

Missouri State, Illinois-Chicago, Bradley and Saint Louis are the other four schools to defeat the Bluejays more than once at Morrison Stadium.

Putting Up Zeros At HomeCreighton allowed its first goal at home this season during the 76th minute against Jacksonville on Tuesday, Sept. 25.

The Bluejays hold a 0.31 goals against average (three goals allowed) and six shutouts through 865 minutes of action at Morrison Stadium during 2018.

The Bluejays held a streak at Morrison Stadium of 615:59 without allowing a goal, which spanned seven matches, including five consecutive shutouts.

The Bluejays did not allow a goal during the first 455 minutes at home this season, and did not allow a goal during the final home match of 2017.

The last goal Creighton conceded before Sept. 25 against Jacksonville was during the 20th minute against Xavier on Oct. 14, 2017, the second-to-last home match a year ago.

Creighton was 14:55 away from matching a program record for consecutive home matches without allowing a goal. The Bluejays have claimed six consecutive home shutouts twice during program history (Oct. 15, 1999-Sept. 2, 2000 and Oct. 26-Nov. 20, 2011).

Rydstrand Honored As Offensive Player of the WeekSenior midfielder Joel Rydstrand earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday, Oct. 30

Rydstrand recorded three assists as Creighton finished last week 2-0-0 to claim the BIG EAST regular-season title.

The Almunge, Sweden native, tallied assists on each of the Bluejays’ two goals on Wednesday against Marquette and served a corner kick for Bryce Gibson’s game-winning goal on Saturday at DePaul. Wednesday’s performance marked his first multi-assist match in a Creighton uniform.

Rydstrand leads the Bluejays with five assists this season, including a BIG EAST-best four during league action.

The senior now has 23 careers helpers which is tied for 11th on Creighton’s career assists list.

Rydstrand Records First Multi-Assist MatchSenior Joel Rydstrand tallied two assists against Marquette (Oct. 24) for his first match with multiple assists. He currently owns 23 career assists during 81 career matches played.

Rydstrand recorded the 20th assist of his career on Creighton’s third goal against Butler (Sept. 15) (second of season).

He is the 20th Bluejay to record at least 20 assists during their career at Creighton.

The Almunge, Sweden native, led the Bluejays in assists each of the past two seasons and leads the team again with five.

Brian Holt set Creighton’s freshman records for goals against average (0.51 in 1,753 min.) and shutouts (12) in 2008.

Holt also holds the Bluejays’ single-season records for both goals against average (0.21 in 2,179 min.) and shutouts (17), which were achieved during the 2011 season.

Three Is The Magic NumberThe Bluejays scored three goals against Xavier (Oct. 6), marking the 16th time in the past three seasons in which the team has tallied three or more goals.

Creighton finished 9-0-0 when scoring three or more goals in 2016, 3-1-0 last season and is 3-0-0 during 2018.

Last season’s 4-3 loss against Marquette (Oct. 25) marked only Creighton’s second loss in program history when scoring three or more goals and first since 1990.

The Tromso, Norway, native, assisted on Sven Koenig’s goal during the third minute and added an insurance score during the 84th.

Boudadi Honored by BIG EASTYounes Boudadi earned a spot on the BIG EAST weekly honor roll on Oct. 8.

The junior defender helped Creighton outshoot Denver and St. John’s by a combined 41-12 margin, including 17-6 on goal.

The Bluejays outshot No. 5 Denver 25-8 and BIG EAST foe St. John’s 16-4, while Boudadi also added a goal in Saturday’s win over the Red Storm.

Koenig Named BIG EAST Offensive POWSenior forward Sven Koenig earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors, the conference announced on Monday, Oct. 1.

Koenig scored all three of the Bluejays’ goals as No. 9 Creighton protected its home pitch and defeated Jacksonville 2-1 on Sept. 25 and Seton Hall 1-0 on Sept. 29.

The senior scored during the 60th and 72nd minutes against the Dolphins and converted the deciding goal during the 84th minute against the Pirates.

The Westhofen, Germany native, leads the BIG EAST with eight goals this season, including five during league matches.

Koenig tallied only two goals during 16 matches played last season in a Bluejay uniform. The senior scored 30 goals during two seasons at Divison II Hawai’i Pacific before joining the Creighton program prior to the 2017 season.

Kruse Named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the WeekFreshman Paul Kruse earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors, the league announced on Sept. 24.

The accolade marked Kruse’s second BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honor this season (also on Sept. 10).

Kruse claimed his BIG EAST-leading fifth shutout of the season -- third consecutive -- during Creighton’s 1-0 victory at Villanova on Sept. 22 as the Bluejays improved to 2-0-0 in league action and 5-1-1 overall.

The Heilbronn, Germany native, made three saves, each during the second half, while helping the Bluejays move into sole possession of first place in the conference standings and extend their overall winning streak to four matches.

Haakenson’s Goal Lifts Bluejays Past VillanovaJunior Luke Haakenson’s goal during the 69th minute at Villanova on Sept. 22 proved to be the game-winner as Creighton claimed a 1-0 victory.

The Bluejays posted their second consecutive shutout to open BIG EAST play for the first time since 2013.

Creighton’s victory also propelled the Bluejays into sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST.

Sven Koenig Earns Honor Roll SelectionSenior forward Sven Koenig scored two second-half goals to help No. 25 Creighton defeat Butler, 3-0 (Sept. 15), in the league opener and earned a spot on last week’s BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (9/17).

Koenig had a career-high six shots, four on goal.

The senior leads the Bluejays with eight goals this season after tallying only two during 16 matches played during 2017.

Mitch LaGro Up For Senior CLASS AwardSenior defender Mitch LaGro was selected as a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award, as announced on Sept. 19 by the organization.

LaGro is one of 30 NCAA men’s soccer student-athletes who excel both on and off the field that were selected as candidates for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate soccer. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achieve-

ments in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The 30-player candidate pool was narrowed to 10 finalists last week. LaGro did not make the list of the 10 finalists.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men’s College Cup championship in December.

Former Creighton goalkeeper Brian Holt won the 2011 Senior CLASS Award.

Ward, Kruse Honored by BIG EAST Akeem Ward and Paul Kruse each received Player of the Week recognition from the BIG EAST Conference on Sept. 10. Ward earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Kruse claimed Goalkeeper of the Week accolades.

Ward tallied the game-winning goal during Creighton’s 2-1 victory at South Florida on Sept. 3, and recorded an assist on the game-winner against Memphis on Sept. 7 as the Bluejays shutout the Tigers, 2-0. The senior’s goal against the Bulls marked the first of his Creighton career.

Ward is tied for the team lead in assists with four, after tallying only two during his first two seasons at Creighton.The freshman earned the shutout against Memphis on Sept. 7 for his third clean sheet of the season.

Additonally, Creighton’s crowd of 4,7111 on Sept. 15 against Butler (Homecoming) ranks as the 13th-largest crowd at a Division I men’s soccer match this season.

The Bluejays also hosted 5,473 fans on Aug. 24 against Clemson (season-opener), which ranks sixth on the list of single-game highs for the 2018 season and sixth all-time in Creighton history.

Creighton Splits During Long Road TripThe Bluejays spent six days (Aug. 30-Sept. 4) away from Omaha and went 1-1 during their first two road matches of the season.

Creighton fell 1-0 against Grand Canyon in Phoenix on Aug. 31 before knocking off South Florida by a 2-1 score on Sept. 3.

Kuba Polat converted a penalty kick and Akeem Ward executed a give-and-go with Joel Rydstrand to give Creighton a 2-0 lead less than 20 minutes into the Bluejays’ match against South Florida.

Bluejays Post Pair of Shutouts To Open SeasonCreighton opened the 2018 regular season with consecutive shutouts, marking the first time the Bluejays accomplished that feat during the first two matches since 2015.

The Bluejays kicked off the season with a 2-0 upset of No. 11 Clemson (Aug. 24).

Last season’s 3-0 loss at No. 1 Stanford (Sept. 1, 2016) marked Creighton’s first defeat during the squad’s first road match of the year since 2006 (at No. 15 Notre Dame, 4-1 loss).

Creighton is 19-6-3 since 1990 in its first true road match of the season.

Overall, the Bluejays are 35-25-7 during all road games under the direction of head coach Elmar Bolowich (since 2011). Creighton is 4-2-0 during road matches this season, and finished 2-6-1 last season.

Ward Named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the WeekSenior Akeem Ward earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors, the league announced on Aug. 27.

The Vienna, Virginia native, tallied two assists during the Bluejays’ season-opening upset victory of No. 11 Clemson on Aug. 24. He also helped guide Creighton to consecutive shutouts during the opening weekend for the first time since 2015, as the Bluejays defeated No. 11 Clemson 2-0 before battling UC Davis to a scoreless draw on Aug. 26.

The Creighton defense held Clemson to only five shots, including none on goal, and limited UC Davis to only one shot on goal during 110 minutes of game action.

Ward is the first Bluejay to be named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week since Mitch LaGro earned similar accolades on Oct. 3, 2016.

Ward also earned a spot on the Top Drawer Soccer Men’s Team of Week on Aug. 28.

The senior defender tallied only two assists

during his first 29 games played at Creighton over the past two seasons.

Opening Up Against Ranked CompetitionCreighton opened the season against a team ranked inside the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25 for the third consecutive season, and fifth time in the past six seasons.

Rydstrand Named Preseason All-BIG EASTSenior midfielder Joel Rydstrand earned a spot on the Preseason All-BIG EAST team, the league announced on Aug. 15.

Rydstrand is one of two returning players to start all 18 matches during Creighton’s 2017 season. The Almunge, Sweden native, led the Bluejays with eight assists during 2017 and owns 18 career helpers (entering 2018) during 64 matches played (63 starts) in three seasons at Creighton. The Bluejays went 5-2-1 during matches in which Rydstrand posted an assist last year.

The senior also scored one goal last season and claims a total of seven during his career.

Rydstrand, a 2018 co-captain, earned BIG EAST All-Freshman team honors in 2015 and claimed Creighton’s Young Leadership Award for 2017.

Bluejays Tied for Fourth In BIG EAST Coaches PollCreighton earned 54 points in the preseason coaches’ poll to place fourth.

The Bluejays went 3-4-2 during BIG EAST play last season to tie for fifth place before bowing out of the postseason during the first round of the BIG EAST Championship.

NCAA Tournament HistoryThe 2017 season marked Creighton’s second time missing the NCAA Tournament during the past 26 seasons.

The last time Creighton did not make the NCAA Tournament was during the 2009 season -- the only other time since its first appearance in 1992. Creighton is 34-20-7 during NCAA action, and has advanced to the College Cup five times (1996, 2000, 2002, 2011, 2012), including a runner-up finish during the 2000 season.

With a victory against Kentucky during the

second round of the 2016 NCAA Championship, the Bluejays won at least two NCAA Tournaments matches during a single season during three consecutive years, and has 12 times in program history.

Creighton teams coached by Elmar Bolowich have advanced to at least the Elite Eight four of eight seasons and to the College Cup twice.

Seeing Double BriggsFreshmen Cameron Briggs and Dominic Briggs join the Bluejay program as twins. Cameron will wear number 22 for Creighton, while Dominic will sport the number 12.

The Briggs twins are the first set of twins to play for the Creighton men’s soccer program.

Across all of Creighton Atheltics, there have been 11 known sets of twins to play in the same sport. Two others pairs of players were part of triplets.

Additionally, Kate Elman (volleyball) and Taylor Elman (baseball) were twins. Kate played volleyball for the Bluejays from 2012-15, while Taylor played baseball from 2013-16.

Brothers ValdiviaIn addition to the Briggs twins, Collin Valdivia (junior) and Dominic Valdivia (sophomore) are brothers on the Creighton soccer squad.

Last season, both Dominic and Collin appeared during Creighton’s match at Seton Hall (Sept. 30, 2017) and played on the field at the same time for 18 minutes, marking the first match since Dec. 13, 2002 (College Cup vs. Stanford) in which brothers were on the field at the same for the Bluejays when Joe Wieland and Matt Wieland both started.

Collin and Dominic are also the first set of brothers to appear in at least one match for Creighton during the same season since the Wieland brothers in 2002.

Dominic, a true freshman, made his Creighton debut during the second half of the Bluejays’ overtime victory against Tulsa on Sept. 19, 2017.

Collin made his Bluejay debut last season against Cal (Sept. 3, 2017), and made the first start of his career on Oct. 6, 2017 against St. John’s.

Vince Odorisio and Tony Odorisio both played at Creighton during the 2004 and 2005 seasons, but Vince and Tony were cousins.

Bolowich Part of Creighton’s 100-Victory ClubHead coach Elmar Bolowich earned his 100th victory at Creighton on Sept. 23, 2017 against Villanova, and is the second head coach in program history to achieve 100 or more wins.

Bolowich moved into second place on Creighton’s all-time wins list with a 3-0 victory over Cal on Sept. 3, 2017, and is currently 115-40-16 as head man of the Bluejays since taking over before the 2011 season.
