Scouting #18 Villanova (10-0)The Wildcats have had a flawless start to the season, highlighted by a 64-55 win over Duke on Nov. 19.

The Wildcats share the basketball and the scoring load, with three players averaging between 10-14 points per game. Villanova is led by Adrianna Hahn (13.9 ppg), followed by Kelly Jekot (12.5 ppg) and Alex Louin (10.2 ppg).

Villanova is an extremely disciplined team that continually guides the nation in fewest turnovers per game. This season the Wildcats are averaging just nine per contest.

Keys Against Villanova• Limit the Wildcats’ extra possessions: The

Wildcats will not give away opportunities, which means to beat them a team has to be just as measured.

• Slow down Hahn: Over the past two seasons the Bluejays have limited Hahn to 31 points in five games, shooting 10-of-37 (27.0%).

Last Time Out#13 Florida State 92, Creighton 82

Junior Audrey Faber delivered a seven of the Bluejays’ record tying 17 three-pointers, but #13 Florida State proved too much for the Creighton women’s basketball team as the Seminoles best-ed the Bluejays 92-82 on Thursday, Dec. 21.

Creighton came out on fire in the first quar-ter, hitting seven three-pointers in the open-ing frame to build a 25-19 edge. Trailing 13-8 with 5:56 left in the opening period, sophomore Jaylyn Agnew lit fire with eight straight points. Agnew’s run began with a jumper in the lane, and then she connected from downtown on consecutive possessions to give the Bluejays a 16-13 lead (3:53). Agnew’s burst ignited her teammates as sophomore Olivia Elger, senior Myah Mellman and Faber all connected from downtown in the frame.

The hot shooting from the Bluejays contin-ued in the second quarter with another six three-pointers. Freshman Temi Carda opened the second with a running 12-foot jumper to give the Bluejays their largest lead (27-19). Florida State, however, used a 10-3 run to make it a one-point affair at 30-29 with 7:36 remaining. Each squad’s offense worked seamlessly in the period, trading buckets throughout the rest of the quar-ter. Tied at 49-49 with under a minute left, the Bluejays scored last as Faber delivered a driving layup to send Creighton to the half up 51-49.

The third period saw both teams make adjust-ments to limit the scoring. The Seminoles took advantage by surging ahead 67-60 heading into the fourth. The athleticism of Florida State proved too much for Creighton in the second half as the Bluejays would get no closer than six (71-65).

Faber led all scorers with 30 points, while Elger closed the game with 20 and Agnew posted 17 points.

Six Seminoles finished in double figures led by 19 from Chatrice White and 17 from AJ Alix.

Conference Opener StatsCreighton is 19-11 overall in conference openers..

• HCAC: 1-2• WAC: 2-0• MVC: 14-7• BE: 2-2

Under Flanery the Bluejays are 10-5 in conference openers. In the six times those openers have come at home, Flanery and the Bluejays are 3-3.

In home conference opening games (regardless if the game was the first game in conference play), the Bluejays are also 10-5 under Flanery.

Bluejays Equal Long Range Mark Knocking Down 17 Treys Against Seminoles

In Creighton’s 92-82 loss to #13 Florida State, the Bluejays tied a program record with 17 three-pointers, but it wasn’t enough. The last time Creighton hit 17 treys came in a win over Providence (Feb. 11,2017).

Creighton has knocked down 16 or more three-pointers in six contests, the Bluejays are 5-1 in those games.

WBB and MBB Sweep UNO & UNL to Paint Nebraska BLUE

For the first time since the 1986-87 season both the Creighton men’s and women’s squads posted victories over UNL and UNO in the same season.

A primary reason for the long drought was that the women’s team did not play UNO from 1988 until the Mavericks moved to division I in 2014. This season the Bluejay women bested UNO 71-52 on Sunday, while downing UNL 64-49 on Nov. 19. The Creighton men’s team posted a 96-67 win over the Mavericks in a charity exhibi-tion on Oct. 26 and its seventh straight win over UNL on Dec. 9, 75-65.

Milestones from the Marathon at Drake• Creighton’s 108 points at Drake marked

the first time the Bluejays topped the century mark since 2-1-1996 (102 points vs. Evansville).

• The four overtime thriller tied the longest game in Bluejay WBB history. Creighton also went four overtimes to defeat Loyola-Chicago on 1-12-1986 (117-108).

• The Bluejays’ 108 points is tied for the 7th most in school history.

• Faber’s 34-point effort was the first Bluejays to cross 30-points since Marissa Janning dropped 30 against Drake on Dec. 14, 2014.

• Drake’s 100 points was the first time since Jan. 25, 1997 that an opponent topped the century. In that contest it was Drake scoring 106.

• The last time the Bluejays won a game that their opponent scored 100 or more was against Indiana State, 110-102, on March 5, 1995.

• Sydney Lamberty (21 points & 12 rebounds) and Temi Carda (16 points & 10 rebounds) became the first duo to record double-doubles in the same game since Marissa Janning (11 points & 10 rebounds) and Brianna Rollerson (14 points & 12 rebounds) accomplished the feat against the Bulldogs on Nov. 17, 2016.

• The Bluejays’ 32-point third quarter was the second-highest output since going to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season. Creighton scored 33 points in the 1st quar-ter against Nebraska on Dec. 6, 2015.

Faber’s 34-Point Effort Yields BIG EAST Player of the Week Honor

Junior Audrey Faber picked up the BIG EAST Player of the Week honor on Monday, Dec. 4 for the Iowa native’s 34-point effort on Sunday to lift Creighton to a 108-100 win at Drake in quadruple overtime.

The junior scored a career-best 34 points, includ-ing 17 in bonus time, eclipsing the 1,000-career point mark, while adding six assists and four rebounds. Faber hit 50 percent of her shots from the field (11-22) and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. No freebies were bigger than the pair that came with one second left in the third overtime as Creighton trailed by two.

Faber’s two free throws sent the game into a fourth extra frame where the Bluejays outscored the Bulldogs 16-8 to clinch the win. Drake entered the contest with the nation’s third lon-gest active home winning streak at 21 games, dating back to February 2016.

Women’s Basketball Signs Brotzki and Saunders for

2018-19Creighton women’s basketball head coach Jim Flanery announced the signing of Payton Brotzki and Rachael Saunders to national letters of intent on the first day of signing on Wednesday, Nov. 8.

“Both of our signees bring leadership characteristics and both play with a lot of emotion, but under con-trol,” said Flanery. “[Brotzki] and [Saunders] are also both good communicators on the court and we’re excited that both wanted to be at Creighton.”

A 5’11 guard from Papillion, Brotzki averaged over 20 points per game as a junior for Platteview High School. Entering her senior season with over 1,100 points, Brotzki guided Platteview to a 25-1 record as a sophomore in 2015-16. Last season she battled through a season-ending meniscus tear in her knee in January of 2017, limiting her to just 18 games. The Metro Coaches Association Class B Player of Year as a sophomore, Brotzki closed that season with 628 points. A two-time All-Area First Team selection, Brotzki has also earned Academic All-State honors in the classroom.

“Payton can score in different ways and she under-stands the complexity of situational basketball,” said Flanery. “Her father is a coach, which helps her under-stand where to improve her game. She has shown that in high school and we think that will help her transi-tion to the college game.”

A two-time All-Mississippi Valley Conference selec-tion, Saunders is a 5’9 guard from Iowa City, Iowa. Entering her senior season at Iowa City West High School, Saunders was a First Team All-District pick last season and also collected Third Team All-State honors in 2016-17. She enters her senior campaign averaging 12.4 points per game as well as two assist and two steals per contest.

“Rachael is also an extremely tough minded individu-al. She suffered an ACL tear in the State Tournament in March and was already cleared to return to the court. That gives you an indication of her work ethic,” said Flanery. “She is a combo guard that has improved significantly since we initially saw her and we feel she will continue to grow here at Creighton.”

Bluejays Sweep Former Valley FoesSince moving from the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) to the BIG EAST prior to the 2013-14 season, the Bluejays have faced off with former MVC rivals 11 times entering the 2017-18 season. During that stretch Creighton is 6-5. With a victory over Northern Iowa and Wichita State (Although Wichita State jumped from the Valley to the AAC prior to this season, they remain a former MVC foe), Creighton can sweep their trio of former rivals for the first time since leaving the MVC.

2013-14: 0-1 (lost at Drake)2014-15: 2-1 (lost at WSU)2015-16: 2-1 (lost at Drake)2016-17: 1-2 (lost at UNI & WSU)2017-18: 3-0

Multiple Concussions Force Rischard To Step Aside

Unable to travel to Las Vegas as she continued to battle concussion symptoms, Creighton senior Aimee Rischard made a tough decision over the Thanksgiving holiday to end her collegiate basketball career.

A two-year walk-on for the Bluejays, Rischard earned a scholarship following the 2016-17 season. During her two years at Creighton, Aimee has played in 27 games, collecting 19 points in 91 minutes.

Rembao Claims BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, Faber Earns Honor Roll

Bluejay freshman Tatum Rembao’s stellar play against three NCAA Tournament squads last season (Northern Iowa, Washington and UCLA) brought the Colorado native the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honor on Monday, Nov. 27th. Rembao averaged 10.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and .423 shooting as the Bluejays bested Northern Iowa in double over-time on Tuesday and pushed Sweet 16 teams Washington and UCLA in the South Point Thanksgiving Tournament in Las Vegas.

Junior Audrey Faber also nabbed some recognition as the Iowa native collected a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll. Faber averaged 20.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and .435 shooting, including a .471 clip from deep. The junior’s week included a 29-point, eight-re-bound, four-assists showing in a double-over-time win over Northern Iowa.

Agnew and Faber Lead Bluejays to Historic Win at Nebraska

Sophomore Jaylyn Agnew and junior Audrey Faber combined to score 34 points, grab 16 rebounds and dish out eight assists as the Bluejays defeated Nebraska 64-49 on Nov. 19.

The win marked the first time since the 1993-94 season that the Bluejays won in Lincoln. Combined with a victory over the Huskers last season at home, it also marked the first time since 1993-94 and 1994-95 that Creighton has earned back-to-back wins over Nebraska.

A Rare Victory in Lincoln for the BluejaysIt’s been more than just a little while since Creighton downed the Huskers in Lincoln, in fact no player in the game was born the last time it happened. Below is a box score from that victory.

Lamberty Earns BIG EAST Honor RollLamberty led the Bluejays to a 66-61 win over Wichita State on Friday with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists. The senior made 5-of-10 attempts from the field to earn a spot on the first BIG EAST Honor Roll of the season.

Another Typical Daunting ScheduleHead coach Jim Flanery has been known for building tough schedules to improve his squads chances for an at-large bid since Creighton was a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. The 2017-18 schedule does not disappoint as Creighton faces four teams ranked in the preseason AP poll as well as another two that are receiving votes. Those number are even higher when considering the preseason USA TODAY/Coaches Poll as five opponents open the season in the rankings (UCLA, Florida State, Marquette, DePaul and Washington), while four others are receiving votes.
