SERVING TEENS AND ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DIFFERENCES Michele Chais and Steven Waxman Michele Chais and Steven Waxman have been sharing their artistic talents with PCR members at both Tricia Sullivan Respite Care Programs and Wednesday Art for fourteen and nearly nine years, respectively. Together, this creative duo has engaged our members with art activities that involve many different media and approaches. Wherever they go, they are on the lookout for “treasures” to work with so they can provide members with various components to select from to assemble and decorate. According to Michele, “Each creation is as unique and incredible as the member who creates it.” Michele enjoys “making members laugh and giggle and take delight in the art process.” She has a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education, with a minor in Psychology, and a Master’s of Science in Art Therapy. Throughout her career, she has worked for other nonprofits, and taught art, ceramics, and photography for Montgomery County Public Schools. During her leisure time, Michele loves spending time with her three grandchildren, participating in water aerobics and yoga, and browsing through thrift stores. As Michele’s assistant at PCR programs, Steven tries “to instill a sense of joy, pride, and empowerment in members through the various media of fine arts and crafts.” He studied fine arts at several art schools, specializing in painting and drawing. In addition to PCR, he has worked with individuals with differing abilities through Upcounty Community Resources, Community Support Services, the Kennedy Institute and the Izaak Walton League. When not assisting Michele, Steven is an offset and digital printing broker and consultant. He enjoys water aerobics, yoga, mythology, music and literature. BOARD OF DIRECTORS Rev. Msgr. John J. PCR & COMMUNITY NEWS

PCR MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Eli Lewis and Steve Sabia

PCR members and longtime friends, Eli Lewis and Steve Sabia, are living their dream of living independently in their own apartment. Steve likes “hanging out with Eli,” and Eli favors “eating dessert with Steve,” and his “favorite thing in the apartment is the walk-in closet.” They live close to both the metro rail and buses, which affords them easy access to work, recreation and classes at Montgomery College. Steve’s advice to other self-advocates living with a roommate is “to respect each other.”

Montgomery County Media interviewed Eli and Steve about their journey. You may find a link to the video on our homepage at: www.pcr-inc.org.

PCR Chorus Concert “A Tribute to the Beach Boys”

PCR’s Msgr. William J. English Chorus provided a wonderful evening of music on July 12th. Congratulations to all of the performers! Special thanks to Amy Gardiner who, after nine years of directing our chorus, is retiring from this position, but will continue to work at other PCR programs. Thanks also to Joan Morris, Jack Kerness and Josh Greher for their assistance in making the concert so special.

TRIBUTE and MEMORIAL GIFTS

When considering ways to pay tribute to a family, friend, or work colleague on a special occasion, or to honor the memory of a person important in your life, please consider making a charitable donation in that person’s name to PCR. All gifts are acknowledged to the honoree and to the donor. Given that program fees cover only a portion of the cost of running our award-winning programs, your support is very much needed. Your tax deductible contribution may be sent to 9200 Kentsdale Drive, Potomac, MD 20854 or made via the PCR website at www.pcr-inc.org.

PCR PROGRAMS IN PICTURES

Phabulous Photographers The 16th Annual Joe Razza Memorial Phabulous Photographers Program Exhibit on July 10th wrapped up a year of photo assignments and monthly meetings. This program, a collaboration between the North Bethesda Camera Club and PCR, began in 2002 as a six-week experiment that brought together local amateur photographers with PCR members who were interested in learning to take pictures. Bonds were forged, and the partnership and fun have been continuing ever since. Congratulations to all of the award-winning photographers who displayed their creative photos reflecting various assigned categories. One hundred members, family and friends gathered for the July exhibit and reception. PCR is grateful to our members for sharing their talents, and to members of the North Bethesda Camera Club for their loyal and dedicated partnership. A new session of Phabulous Photographers will begin on Tuesday, September 4th. To register, please see the enclosed Fall Registration packet, or register online at www.pcr-inc.org.
