growing together

There’s such joy in a child’s smile when they measure themselves on a growth chart. It is amazing to watch those moments of childhood wonder and discovery.

And for parents, there’s both gratitude and anticipation in marking these milestones of childhood. Each mark on the chart is a celebration of how much they have grown and how much hope the future holds.

At Washburn Center for Children, we are charting growth in so many ways:• for our children — Our goal is to help each child develop emotional awareness and

resilience so they can thrive and grow.• for our community — We are creatively partnering to increase access to care for the

100,000 Minnesota kids who are struggling with untreated mental health challenges.• for our future — We are boldly growing to serve 5,000 children annually by 2023.

As we look ahead, we also pause to celebrate what you helped Washburn Center accomplish in 2018:• For the first time in our 136-year history, you helped serve nearly 3,600 children —

11% more than the year before.• Families have better access to our transformative care through several new partnerships.

Amidst these accomplishments, the agency saw positive financial growth in our operating activities in 2018. The overall change in net assets was negatively impacted by our investment returns.

Thank you for charting this growth with us. Your support helps children grow with resilience and hope.

Frank Bennett, President, 2018 Board of Trustees | Tom Steinmetz, CEO

and growingBorn as a two-pound preemie to a mom who struggled with mental health challenges and drug addiction, Brianna has certainly beaten the odds.

“I was thrown into adulthood before I even became a teenager,” she explains. Long before those teen years, Brianna came to Washburn Center because her mom was required to take parenting classes in order to keep custody of her.

When it became clear that her mom’s borderline personality disorder impacted Brianna’s safety, her loving grandparents raised her.

The journey for the 22-year-old hasn’t been easy, but it’s been a path full of growth and discovery — especially when it came to her perspective on mental health.

“I used to see my mom’s illness in such a negative way,” recalls Brianna. “I thought, ‘What’s wrong with her? How could she do this to me?’”

Page 5: 2018 annual report - Washburn Center for Children · 2019. 7. 31. · At Washburn Center for Children, we are charting growth in so many ways: • for our children — Our goal is

“I’ve grown to see the strength of individuals who struggle with their mental health… they are resilient for surviving their illness.”

Born as a two-pound preemie to a mom who struggled with mental health challenges and drug addiction, Brianna has certainly beaten the odds.

They were fair questions for a confused teenager who would frequently receive texts from her mom about overdosing with pills — or who had to coach her mom through manic episodes.

Now — as a recent University of Minnesota graduate with a bachelor’s in psychology — Brianna focuses on her mom’s resiliency.

“I’ve grown to see the strength of individuals who struggle with their mental health,” she said. “They are resilient for surviving their illness. I went from resenting my mom to seeing her as one of the strongest people I know.”

These personal experiences have set her on a path to become a child psychologist. At the University of Minnesota, she received a scholarship for breaking down the stigma of mental health and completed a research fellowship at the Institute of Child Development.

Brianna’s motivated to make a difference because, “everyone knows someone in their life who’s struggling with mental health.”

It is clear that for this tenacious 22-year-old, the journey has just begun.

and gaining hopeWhile she stood in her living room holding a toy truck over her head as two of her children screamed for her attention, Kristin’s family therapist encouraged her, “You can do this.”

Her therapist was right — she could do this.

Mason, Kristin’s son, had just taken his brother’s toy away. She asked him to give the toy back which made him angry. He started hitting his brother and fighting over the toy.

All of this was witnessed by their family clinician who was in their home to provide support and different strategies to better manage Mason’s explosive behavior. Mason had attended Washburn Center’s Family Focused program for the past two months because of his aggression.

As a foster parent to five children, Kristin would often let Mason get what he wanted because it was the easiest way for her to manage his behavior and not disrupt the others. But on this day, with the guidance of their clinician, Kristin was able to calm Mason’s outburst.

“Sometimes I’m discouraged because nothing I do seems to help,” explained Kristin. “It’s been helpful to have our clinician come into our home to suggest new strategies that are working.”

The generosity of Washburn Center supporters makes it possible to offer in-home and group therapy that strengthens many families like Kristin’s.
