Hospitals today are small cities within themselves where hallways become streets, elevators becometransit systems, and rooms become buildings. They require public and private spaces. I began by designing theform of the hospital through an expression of the tension between the city of Chicago and the waters of Lake Michi-gan. This expression also began to offer opportunities to create spaces that were more organic

Museums are some of our most flexible project types. With this flexibility I explored the opportu-nity for the building to express the city’s connec-tion to the Alabama River. This space will open up to the natural landscape showing you the exhibit of the river. Next, I focused my atten-tion on the large west facing wall. This wall was originally thought to be glass, but the heat gains would have been severe in the main gallery space. The solution was a pattern based on the curves of the river. This pattern filtered out most of the harsh sunlight while producing a pattern of shadows cast onto the space within.

Goals

-Connect the visitor and the city to the natural environment-Control direct sunlight-Create an iconic landmark for the city

Bookstores are a dying place in American cities. The walls of books used to be enough to cause people to spend hours in a local bookstore. Nowa-days you need low prices, a Starbucks, and much larger inventories. This bookstore would become a new destination for Opelika. The facetted glass gives you the impression that the bookstore is filled with knowledge and it about to spill out in to the street. The shelves in the front window are intended to be displays as well as the structural support for the facetted curtain wall.
