wE NEED YOU TO HELP CHILDREN AND OUR COMMUNITY HEAL

What a wonderful groundbreaking celebration we had on August 13! More than 300 community leaders, public officials, staff, donors and advocates gathered to celebrate the importance of children’s mental health and Washburn’s plans for an expanded facility. To explain the synergy, excitement and anticipation felt at this community celebration is nearly impossible. In fact, Ellen Goldberg Luger, executive director of the General Mills Foundation, told us it was one of the most impressive and well-attended groundbreakings she had been to in years. This campaign isn’t just about building a new building. It’s about the collaboration and generosity of our community coming together to create a place where young minds can heal and grow. I was elated to announce at the groundbreaking that nearly 90% of the funds have been raised – and privileged to ask for the community’s support during this final stretch of raising the remaining $2.4 million. On behalf of those who have already given, we invite you to join us in creating a vital community resource. Please read this newsletter to see how you can be involved:

• Double the impact on our community through your gift: your support of this critical community resource will have twice the impact thanks to donors whose inspiring generosity created a $700,000 challenge pool.

• Support children by purchasing a commemorative paver: Leave a lasting legacy and highlight your personal commitment to children’s mental health through a commemorative paver, bench or tree.

Why should you be involved in creating this state-of-the-art children’s mental health center? Because this is the most important initiative happening for kids in our community today. Because your impact will be felt for decades to come. Because I want you to experience the joy of helping struggling children reach their potential by offering critical, early mental health intervention.

Thank you for healing children, and our community.

wAsHbURN RECEIVEs NEw MARKET TAX CREDIT FUNDs In late September, Washburn closed on the financing of a New Market Tax Credit (NMTC) process which will provide approximately $4.5 million toward the new facility.

“Receiving this NMTC allocation through a very competitive process illustrates how private investors believe this is a critical project for the community,” explains Executive Director Steve Lepinski.

The goal of the federal NMTC program is to spur revitalization and community development by providing private investors with a tax credit. New Market Tax Credits were received from United Fund Advisors (UFA), U.S. Bancorp Community Development Corporation and Capital City Properties.

“Washburn Center for Children provides critical services to children,” said UFA Principal Colin Rowan. “This project will help to ensure that children will continue to receive the quality, compassionate treatment that they need to lead successful lives, for years to come.”

ANNOUNCINg THE UNITED HEALTH FOUNDATION TRAININg INsTITUTE AT wAsHbURN CENTER FOR CHILDREN

The United Health Foundation recently awarded a $2.9 million grant to Washburn Center for Children to help create an innovative, nationally recognized children’s mental health training program. The United Health Foundation Training Institute at Washburn Center for Children will be housed in Washburn’s new facility.

In partnership with United Health Foundation, Washburn Center for Children endeavors to:

• Improve clinical outcomes and reduce total cost of care by increasing access to the most effective, evidence-based mental health services,

• Transform the training, practice and expertise of the children’s mental health workforce in Minnesota, and

• Create an innovative, replicable national model for integrating children’s mental health evidence-based practices with training, practice and evaluation.

Washburn is grateful to the United Health Foundation for this significant investment.

Enthusiasm and anticipation were the hallmark of the community groundbreaking celebration for Washburn Center for Children’s new facility on August 13. More than 300 community members gathered for this exciting milestone in Washburn’s 130-year history.

The groundbreaking received media coverage by MPR, WCCO TV, Star Tribune, KARE 11, and KSTP – illustrating the importance of this new children’s

mental health facility in the Twin Cities community.

Da Rich Kidzz, a North Minneapolis hip-hop group, joined the audience after performing their hit song, “Hot Cheetos and Takis.”

Six North Minneapolis organizations welcomed Washburn to its new neighborhood by creating an artistic eight-foot-tall welcome tree symbolizing harmony, strength, nature and coming together. Washburn is grateful to these new neighbors: Augustana Open Circle Heritage Park, Northside Achievement Zone, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Summit Academy, The Link, W. Harry David Academy School and artists Erin and Nate Moren for this heartfelt welcome!

“Too many of our kids go undiagnosed and untreated. When there’s early intervention, when kids have access to mental health resources, it makes a big difference,” stated US Senator Al Franken during the program.

As a former principal in Minneapolis Public Schools, Maureen Bazinet Beck knows there is a widespread,

unmet need for children’s mental health services.

“Envision two children with extreme behavioral issues in a classroom of 30 kids and you can imagine

the impact it has on everyone’s ability to learn,” explained Beck, who currently serves as the executive

director of the Edward R. Bazinet Foundation, which is now part of The Minneapolis Foundation.

The foundation generously supported Washburn’s new facility with a gift of $200,000 to help establish a

challenge pool which matches gifts of $500 or more. Their gift, they hope, will inspire more individuals

to help create a healing, therapeutic environment for children.

“It’s vital that this community supports Washburn’s work with children,” Beck said. “Our foundation

supported this work for over 20 years, and we know of no other organization that does what they do as

well.”

DOUbLE THE IMPACT OF YOUR gIFT

Your support of this critical community initiative will

have twice the impact thanks to the Edward R. Bazinet

Foundation and Lynne and Andy Redleaf, whose inspiring

generosity created a challenge pool to match your gift. Any

gift of $500 and above made by December 31, 2013 will be

matched dollar for dollar, up to $700,000.
