3Driving Tomorrow’s Workforce

2018 was another stellar growth year for TechForce Foundation. While we continue to honor our roots as a major provider of scholarships & grants to students pursuing their post-secondary technical education, TechForce’s real growth in 2018 came from investors excited about FutureTech Success®, our industry-wide, workforce development initiative to solve the technician shortage.

During 2018, TechForce completed construction of two annual marketing campaigns: August’s “Because I’m a Tech…” and January’s “Be a Pathfinder.” Unveiling these integrated, multi-media campaigns in 2018 gave our partners the chance to customize and leverage the turnkey tools and templates, and test what a successful activation might look like.

Also in 2018, TechForce brought to life FutureTech Tuesday, the idea that on one Tuesday a month, industry, employers, technicians, educators — everyone — ‘buzzes’ on social media about the technician profession. The idea was born out of a brainstorm session at our annual partner summit. TechForce delivered twelve-months-worth of framework, themes, messaging and content — including March’s FutureTechs Rock Awards and November Techs Rock Awards.

With this inaugural “test year” now under our belt, FutureTech Success is poised to aggressively increase its prowess towards the target audience of PIPS (parents and influencers of peripheral students) in 2019 and beyond.

Also in 2018, with the encouragement and support of our friends at Universal Technical Institute (UTI), TechForce expanded its ability to provide scholarships and grants to students with financial need going to any qualified, post-secondary school in the country. TechForce also launched its nonprofit-to-nonprofit grant system, providing cash awards to support other nonprofit organizations’ scholarship programs, including:

• Arkansas Trucking Association

• Collision Repair Education Foundation

• Women in Auto Care

• WyoTech Foundation

• University of the Aftermarket/ automotivescholarships.com

Additionally, TechForce provided nonprofit-to-nonprofit grants to support other youth career exploration, workforce development, STEM & automotive/diesel technology programs, and skills-building competitions. For example, TechForce provided a curriculum grant to S.T.E.A.M. Sports Foundation, and signed on as the presenting sponsor of TMCFutureTech skills competition.

TechForce continued to diversify the board of directors in 2018, welcoming four women, and board representatives from not only automotive, but collision repair and aftermarket. The board adopted the 2019-2021 strategic plan, which invested a quarter of a million dollars in IT infrastructure, pursued an individual donor fundraising strategy, increased focus on training aid and in-kind media donations, and invested more resources to deliver TechForce’s community engagement strategy.

2018 Strategic Highlights

2018 TechForce Annual Report4

In 2018, TechForce surpassed the $4.0M mark in revenue, securing new and renewed contributions from both companies and individuals. (Amazing, given that we were at $1.5 million just four years ago.) For a complete list of our supporters, please see Page 9.

Additionally, TechForce distributed $1.97M in scholarships and grants to financially disadvantaged students in 2018 so they may pursue their technical education and/or remain in school when a ‘life happens emergency’ threatened to derail them. More than 3,770 students benefitted from our donors’ generosity.

TechForce Foundation continues to build its assets and reserves, so that it can remain healthy and strong regardless of economic conditions. TechForce ended 2018 with $3.9M in net assets, predominately cash but also in-kind training aids and vehicle inventory.

Because both scholarship and grants, as well as the FutureTech Success initiative, are core to TechForce’s mission delivery, 86% — the vast majority — of TechForce’s expenses in 2018 were mission-critical, program expenses.

In summary, TechForce Foundation enjoyed healthy financials, zero debt, $3.9 million in net assets, and annual revenues of $4 million from committed and enthusiastic, blue-chip corporate and individual donors.

2018 TechForce Annual Report6

Looking Ahead The future is brightWhile 2018 was the year of getting the marketing and promotions built out, 2019 is the year to begin reaching parents and influencers of middle- and high schoolers, working to convert them from naysayers to champions. With more than 100 videos, a year-long content calendar filled with original stories, and a growing network of corporate, association, nonprofit and school partnerships, we’re looking forward to this next phase.

Our intentions for 2019 include further diversification of our board of directors, ideally welcoming representatives from diesel, motorsports and motorcycle; launch of our CRM and database projects; further refinement of our community engagement and mobile footprint strategies; and attraction of more corporate, association, school and nonprofit partnerships.

TechForce Foundation’s board of directors has invested in infrastructure build and growth over the past five years. The Board knew that the shift to build TechForce’s name and reputation as the champion for working and future techs who desire to pursue their technician education and careers was going to require getting the proper systems, deliverables and staff in place to deliver on our promises. Thus, in 2018, we added three key positions: Director National Partnerships, Marketing Coordinator, and Manager, School Partnerships and Scholarships. To think that in 2014 we only had two employees, yet ended 2018 with eight staffers total -- is astonishing. In addition to ramping up staffing, TechForce identified a high-quality arsenal of professional, freelance marketers who helped us deliver video production, graphic design, promotions and IT prowess.

TechForce’s office space, utilities and office supplies continue to be donated by Universal Technical Institute at its home office in Scottsdale, Arizona, which saves the Foundation considerable cash and operational headaches. As we grow, we continue to appreciate their flexibility and generosity of more cubicles and parking spaces; and we appreciate the privacy they provide in ensuring our autonomy.

Army Veteran Helped by TechForce’s Veterans at Work:

Military Transition FundJamal Geeter enjoys helping people. Before moving to start school, Jamal frequently donated blood, and volunteered countless hours at local homeless shelters.

As a general service technician with National Tire and Battery, Jamal found that he could marry his love of service with his passion for working on cars and trucks. He says it best himself, “I am passionate about pursuing a technical career because it is so rewarding to have a customer come in with a problem and I fix the concern.”

Jamal first started working on cars out of necessity, providing routine maintenance on his grandparents’ vehicles. He has always enjoyed working with his hands, and so perhaps it was only a matter of time before he fell in love with repairing vehicles. Jamal’s favorite thing to do is modify vehicles to perform better than factory specifications.

A United States Army veteran, Jamal has experience working under pressure, and knows firsthand the value of routine maintenance:

“ On a mission in the Army, my satellite communications equipment failed. I had to get the backup system running, which was no problem since we checked and maintained it constantly. Then I had to diagnose and repair the network issue.”

Jamal Geeter would eventually receive an award for his actions on that mission.

In 2018, the TechForce’s Veterans at Work: Military Transition Fund generated $49,261 in funding, and distributed 53 awards to veterans pursuing their technical education.

Loyd always loved cars as a kid. But because he started his family at a young age, he had to put work and providing for his family as a priority over his own personal interests. Previous jobs had Loyd traveling across the nation while his wife and kids endured at home without him. “When my 18 year old moved out of the house is when it really hit me. I realized what I was missing out on.”

In October of 2016, Loyd became unemployed. He took that opportunity to reflect on his life and made the conscious decision to find balance between work and life. “After speaking with my wife, much thought and a whole lot of praying, I decided to go

back to school. I thought to myself, ‘well, I’m not getting any younger and I’ve always wanted to learn how to work on cars, I think it’s time’. Apart from that, it seems like working at a dealership with fixed hours and proving some sort of job security, fits my goal of work, life balance.”

As a child, Loyd’s family owned Nissans and Fords. “With those two brands being around a lot in my life, I’ve grown a fondness for them. I can remember when my Tia Monica came home with her brand new silver Nissan Sentra. She went to the rim shop and put Enkei rims on it. I was like ‘Wow, when I grow up, I want a Sentra just like that!’” Torn between the two brands and passionate

about both, Loyd wanted to attend both advance training programs. Ultimately, he chose the Nissan program.

While attending school, Loyd is employed in his new found industry in an entry level position. “My income really doesn’t cover much, so things are tight in terms of finances. My family and I are sacrificing for the time being, knowing that in due time, it will all be worth it.” Loyd pursues an education in technical training with the hopes of owning a garage where he can help people in need. Thanks to the Nissan Automotive Technician Training (NATT) Tuition Scholarship Award, Loyd can focus on what matters most: following his interest and home every night for his kids.

2018 TechForce Annual Report10

Alondra says, “When I was little, I remember my uncle had a 98 Honda Civic, manual transmission. I would always accompany him wherever he would go and the way he would drive that car made me have this adrenaline that I’d never experienced. I was always there with him as he customized it little by little. That’s when I noticed that my uncle was basically expressing himself through the car and I loved that. After that, I began obsessing over cars. I would play video games like Need for Speed and customize my own cars. I compare it with art. I love to draw as well because with art it comes from within you.”

Alondra feels being a woman in her chosen field is a challenge. “It brought up a lot vultures against me. I’ve had to deal with stereotypical comments from biased people.” For a while, she started to believe them. “It brought me down for some time, until I realized that if I weren’t to take the path I wanted, I was going to regret my own decision for the rest of my life. I wasn’t born to live up to other people’s expectations nor to let my dreams be stepped on.” She began to focus more on what she wanted to do with her life.

Prior to her enrollment at NASCAR Tech, Alondra worked in customer service, first at a bakery and later, at a restaurant. “It was great learning how to treat customers and having a working environment that was a lot like a family. I learned how to work in a fast moving pace without losing control. It really helped me learn how to get my work done independently as well as on a team.”

Alondra’s passion for NASCAR comes from simple adrenaline thrill of Motorsport. “The drivers go out there and show off their best. The tension the drivers have while racing is a tension that is passed out to the fans watching as well.” She is a fan of Kyle Larson. “He’s young but clearly talented. I like how he focuses more on having fun, and just getting out there to get the best out of it.” She credits her uncle for her knowledge of NASCAR history. “I had already fallen in love with classic cars and knowing they would drive and race those cars in a dirt track, got me really stoked. I got involved with stock cars as well, because with stock cars you can do more adjustments to the engine.” She hopes her future as an automotive technician will make racing more sophisticated. Alondra says, “It’ll be great to custom make an engine for a race and show it off to the world, passing out that adrenaline to all car lovers.”

The NASCAR / Brienne Davis Memorial Tuition Scholarship award will support Alondra as she races towards her future career.

11Driving Tomorrow’s Workforce

FutureTech Success’ strategy is a three-pronged approach that includes:

1. Reframing the image of the profession,

2. Reinforcing hands-on opportunities for students to ‘tinker’ and engage with auto and diesel technology once again, and

3. Harnessing the collective voice and vast resources of the entire transportation/mobility industry, directing and packaging them in a way that future tech students and their parents can more easily navigate the education and career pathways.

Highlights of the 2018 FutureTech Success accomplishments include:

• Creation of the August promotion “Because I’m a Tech”

• Creation of the January promotion “Be a Pathfinder”

• Creation of the themes, hashtags and content ideas for 12 months of the FutureTech Tuesday social media program

• Launched the TechsRock Awards, which secured over 250 nominations, 5 finalists, and more than 30,000 people’s choice votes, culminating in naming Ford Tech Michael Cole the national winner.

Women Techs RockTechForce unites its scholarship and grant support for future female technicians with its FutureTech Success campaign’s proactive, young women marketing and engagement strategies called Women Techs Rock.

Less than 2% of the country’s technicians are women. This must change if we truly want to solve the technician shortage. TechForce is dedicated to providing more outreach to young women, helping them see this as a viable and exciting career path and providing the support services needed to achieve their goal.

In 2018, TechForce awarded 9% of scholarship and grant dollars to females, supporting more than 74 women with $179,459 in funding. TechForce launched an arsenal of female-focused imagery, videos and spokespeople into the marketplace so young girls would see themselves in the technician profession and/or transportation industry.
