Update: As Techs Gray, FreshFaces NeededBy Gary Stamberger

Earlier this year I wrote on the topicof “the graying of our industry”

(Undercar Digest, June 2016). It was areport on the 2016 AutomotiveTraining Managers Council (ATMC)Conference where the latest discussionconcerns how we as an industry caninfluence young people to come intothe automotive field.

Again, for those readers not famil-iar with ATMC, it was founded in 1984as a nonprofit organization designedto promote the advancement of train-ing and professional developmentwithin the automotive service industryand is a member of the council of theASE Industry Education Alliance.

Made up of training professionalsfrom the OEM, aftermarket and fleetsegments of the industry, it sees itselfas a “think tank,” collectively workingtoward bringing the best and most up-to-date training to the industry. Theyare assisted in this by members of thepublishing, software development andeducator fields, as well as tool andequipment manufacturers.

As an organization, ATMC isuniquely qualified to take a leadershiprole since its membership representsall segments in both the automobileand truck segments.

The initial discussions on this topictook place two years ago during theAftermarket Forum meeting. This pastApril it was then brought to the gener-al meeting where the OE members im-mediately gave it their full support. Atthe same time the ATMC Board indi-cated its desire to bring the industrytogether to speak with one voice as weattempt to change the image of thetechnician to attract more young peo-ple.

To this end a follow-up meetingtook place during the ASE IndustryEducation Alliance (IEA) Conferencein July. At that time, it was determinedthat the best course of action was tojoin forces with the TechForceFoundation on this effort. They hopeto coordinate the efforts of many of thefirms and organizations that have

common goals on thisissue. The foundation isa fully independent501(c)(3) nonprofit orga-nization designed tochampion young peopleand their dreams to pur-sue a technical careerand jobs that “fit them!”

TechForce, throughan initiative calledFutureTech Success, willtarget middle and highschool students, theirparents and influencers. The campaignwill consist of three segments, market-ing, hands-on experience, and syner-gism.

The marketing portion of the cam-paign will work to change the “greasemonkey” image of today’s technicianas well as bring to light the vast arrayof opportunities within the transporta-tion industry.

Hands-on experience is a segmentthat will focus on bringing back op-portunities for teens to ‘tinker’ withvehicle technology through after-school, weekend and summer pro-grams, and connect them with careerdays, local events, technical trainingopportunities, and internships/ap-prenticeships. The hope, of course, isto create a spark that might ignite intoa career.

The third phase of the program willconcentrate on creating a synergisticenvironment within the industrywhere all will benefit. One of thelargest stumbling blocks within the in-dustry has always been the “protect-ing of ones’ own turf” … competitiongone array. TechForce Foundation un-derstands this and is working to bringeveryone and all best practices togeth-er under an umbrella of common goalsand initiatives. The belief is the wheeldoesn’t need to be reinvented; weneed to collaborate and each put forthour best effort to make these goals areality.

By targeting younger students, thepurpose is to engage students early onas they begin to explore various ca-

reers and ensure they understand theopportunities in the transportation in-dustry. As students choose technicalcareers, this will begin to build thepipeline of the future with the hope ofavoiding this crisis further down theroad. It will work with proven intern-ship programs for post-secondary edu-cation and look to the existingaftermarket training programs to keepall technicians current in their knowl-edge and skill set.

The trainers and the programs theyrepresent have started the ball rollingon an initiative that could change thefuture of our industry permanently.Much credit belongs to ATMC for cre-ating the forum that let this idea formand grow into the initiative it is today. There is still much work to be doneand money to raise, so if you have pas-sion for what you do and are someonewho “gets these kids,” maybe a carguy/gal yourself, a DIYer, in the busi-ness, or part of a company or businessthat depends on the value, pipelineand/or purchasing power of automo-tive, diesel, medium/heavy truck, mo-torcycle, marine, motorsports, aviation, and/or agricultural equip-ment service technicians, then yournext move is to support this initiative.
