A Thank YouTo Our Ambassadors

and DiplomatsWhen you look at any successful business and event, what do you see?

Ask yourself what the one major factor they have in common is? It’s the group of individuals who work together as a team striving for the same goal.

Well, when you look at the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce it’s no different. In order for this organization to achieve its many goals and successfully serve its 1,000 plus members it takes a great group of individuals who work together towards a common goal – our Ambassadors and Diplomats.

With the new fiscal year in progress, the DACC would like to say “thank you” to this special group of individuals who spend a great deal of their time helping to make your local Chamber a success.

The mission of the Ambassador and Diplomats is to serve as “goodwill ambassadors and diplomats” for the Dothan Area Chamber, while promoting retention and helping to increase membership. These dedicated individuals not only serve as the eyes and ears for the Chamber, but they also assist in promoting the organization and all of its activities and events, and this is a huge task within itself.

This year, there are over 50 wonderful hard-working businessmen and women participating in the programs. “Our Ambassadors and Diplomats are the hands and feet of the Chamber. We thank them for their commitment and enthusiasm in their role as the Chamber’s spokespersons,” said Hayden Camp, director of membership. “Without their help, the Chamber would not be able to serve its members as effectively as we do.”

The Ambassadors are chosen each year in October at the start of the Chamber’s fiscal year. Anyone who is an active Chamber member is eligible to apply for the program. Applications are available in the Chamber Connections newsletter and online during the months of July and August. Once someone has been an Ambassador for three years, they are eligible for the Diplomat program.

Ambassadors and Diplomats are responsible for attending monthly meetings, assisting in new member recruitment and contacting members to make sure they are satisfied with Chamber services. They are required to attend all membership events including Ribbon Cuttings, Groundbreakings, General Membership Events, Networking Events and Trade Shows. They also assist the Membership Director in coordinating these same events throughout the year.

A special thank you to this year’s Chamber Ambassadors and Diplomats for all their devotion and commitment to their local Chamber! If you know an Ambassador or Diplomat, be sure to take a moment to thank them for volunteering their time and service.

For more information about the Ambassador and Diplomat programs, contact Camp at (334) 792-5138 or email [email protected].

The Southeast Alabama Community Theatre will hold auditions for its 2017 production of 9 To 5 The Musical Sunday-Monday, Dec. 11-12. Auditions on Sunday will be at 2 p.m. and on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Auditions are free-of-charge and no experience is necessary.

Three unlikely friends take control of their office and learn there is nothing they can’t do, even in a man’s world. Based on the seminal 1980 hit movie, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, 9 To 5 The Musical performance

dates are Mar. 14-18, 2017, at the Dothan Opera House.

Pushed to the boiling point, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with a “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” of a male boss. These ladies live out their wildest fantasy to give him the boot, and while he is out of commission, take control of the company. Hey, a girl can scheme, can’t she?

SEACT To Hold Auditions

For over 30 years, the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce has recognized its long-standing members upon their retirement from the business world with a Lifetime

Membership. In acknowledgment of his work within the Wiregrass, this recognition was recently bestowed upon Robert Crowder, Southern Alabama Regional Council on Aging executive director.

Crowder served as executive director of SARCOA from 1997-2016 and was very instrumental in starting new programs at the organization and statewide that have benefitted thousands of Alabama seniors. His community service also includes serving as City of Taylor mayor and three terms as Houston County Commission chairman.

Crowder’s list of accomplishments is vast and include the creation of Houston’s County’s annual Spirit of Service project and developing several programs to benefit senior citizens throughout the Wiregrass including:

• Hungry to Help Program establishing a means for the sponsorship of nutritious meals for the homebound elderly by churches, clubs, businesses and friends and loved ones;

• Equipment loaner program for area homebound seniors;

• Wiregrass Senior Leadership program;

• Wiregrass Senior Resource Directory; and

• Wiregrass 50+ EXPO.

The DACC’s Board of Directors and staff are honored to have had the opportunity to work with Crowder through the years!

WorkforceDevelopment

Every two years, the U.S. Department of Labor and the Alabama Department of Labor publish Projected Employment by Industry for 10 out-years. The latest projections are for the period 2014 to 2024.

The projection is that statewide job growth during that period will be 161,820. The average annual rate of growth within the state is projected to be slightly higher than the United States at 0.75% versus 0.64%. Ninety-five percent of projected growth will be wage and salary

employment while the remainder will be self-employed.Of the projected 154,060 wage and salary workers, 81 percent are

in the Service Providing sector, with the largest growth in Health Care and Social Assistance at 49,920. Manufacturing jobs are expected to grow by 20,510, with durable goods manufacturing growing and non-durable goods manufacturing employment declining. Sectors projected to decline are: Utilities, Information and Federal Government, excluding Post Office.

A nationwide trend for states to progress through in dominant sector employment is: Manufacturing, Retail and then Health Care and Social Assistance. In 2013, only seven states still had more workers in manufacturing than in retail or health care and social services. A time-lapse map showing this trend is provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics at www.bls.gov/opub/ted/2014/ted_20140728.htm.

Statewide projections in growth in specific occupations indicate the following annual growth through 2024:

OccupationProjected Average Annual Openings

Registered Nurses 1,870

Team Assemblers 1,555

Customer Sales Representatives 1,195

General and Operations Managers 985

Nursing Assistants 800

Sales Reps, Wholesale and Manufacturing 780

Licensed Practical and Vocational Nurses 640

Accountants and Auditors 600

Home Health Aides 480

Personal Carte Aides 455

The state Department of Labor will provide regional projections of High Demand and Fast Growing occupations for the 2014-2014 in the near future. I have tracked these regional projections for about six cycles and will share the latest with you when they come out.

At the county level, the U.S. Cluster Mapping Project has been tracking growth and decline in Local Clusters, which constitutes 75 percent of employment, and provides data on growth and decline.
