B. Course Description
This course encompasses the methodology of designing scientific social research. It
discusses quantitative and qualitative concepts and procedures applying them to the
practice of Social Work. The topics include research development, theoretical
approaches, ethics in research and elements of diversity in the investigation. The
comparison and application of quantitative and qualitative designs, samplings, the
elaboration of research tools and data and information gathering is equally addressed.
It facilitates skill development and fundamental knowledge for the design and
completion of research in Social Work.
Descripción del curso
Este curso abarca la metodología de diseño de la investigación social científica.
Discute conceptos y procedimientos cuantitativos y cualitativos aplicándolos a la
práctica del Trabajo Social. Los temas incluyen desarrollo de investigación, enfoques
teóricos, ética en investigación y elementos de diversidad en la investigación. La
comparación y la aplicación de diseños cuantitativos y cualitativos, muestreos, la
elaboración de herramientas de investigación y la recopilación de datos e información
se abordan por igual. Facilita el desarrollo de habilidades y el conocimiento
fundamental para el diseño y la finalización de la investigación en Trabajo Social.

C. Course Objectives
Upon completing this course, the student will:
Content
1. Develop knowledge and skills on quantitative and qualitative research.
2. Demonstrate the ability to identify problems that require investigation.
3. Understand the application of scientific social research in Social Work.
4. Demonstrate dominance of the fundamental methods and designs in research.
5. Formulate adequate designs to approach the problems investigated.
6. Obtain and support ethical stances in the research design.
7. Demonstrate the application of measures to protect the human subjects in the
investigation.
8. Develop critical ability to identify areas that require strengthening in the logic and
design of the research.
9. Develop objective and supported documentation skills from primary sources in
literature.

1. Develop your listening skills while sharing, comparing, and developing new ideas
about quantitative and qualitative research.
2. Express him/herself in English/Spanish, correctly and coherently, when orally
applying the fundamental methods and designs in to the Social Work research.
3. Analyze the assigned literature, regarding the application of scientific social
research in Social Work, in English and Spanish, to strengthen your critical thinking

D. Specific Course Guidelines
The student will follow these specific course guidelines:
1. Refer to the Student Guidelines to glance at general policies, resources, and other
important elements for the course.
2. All of the rubrics used to evaluate activities for this course, as well as any specific
course document, can be accessed in the Supporting Documents section.
3. Place all the evaluated activities of the course, with their respective rubrics, in the
corresponding folder of the workshops of the Digital Performance Portfolio. This
includes, but not limited to, the original drafts of written works, evidence of the
feedback provided by the NetTutor tool, and the revised versions of said written
work.
4. Complete and submit evidence of the completion of the Institutional Review Board
Certification (Human Research Certificate).
5. This course requires the drafting and design of a research proposal, it can be
individual or in a group, according to the facilitator's guidelines. The proposal will
be composed of (but not limited to): formulation of research problems, definition of
the problem, justification, and documentation of the objectives, questions in the
research, variables, hypothesis, ethics in research, protection of human beings,
cultural sensitivity and diversity. Additionally, evidence of consent and approval is
required to carry out the design of the proposal.

It consists of the activities carried out before and during the workshops that will include: essays (analytical, critical and reflective, among others), outlines, news analysis, written report of the interview activity to the Social Work professional, graphic organizers, among others.

Each workshop requires the writing of a self-reflection on a specific topic of the workshop or as instructed by the facilitator. Refer to the Activities during the workshop to learn the topic of each self-reflection

Digital Portfolio
The facilitator will specify in the workshops the exclusive works that will be included in the digital portfolio. The facilitator will use the Appendix R rubric of the Digital Performance Portfolio Assessment Handbook (see the manual in Blackboard, use its rubrics and those in the appendices section of the module, as applicable).

Each activity that forms part of the evaluation includes two components with distinctive
weights:

Paradigmas de investigación, ética y aplicabilidad en Trabajo Social
A. Objetivos del taller
Durante el taller, el estudiante:
Contenido
1. Examinará la relevancia y la aplicabilidad de la investigación en el Trabajo Social.
2. Identificará problemáticas éticas que pueden surgir durante la investigación en
Trabajo Social.
3. Contrastará los paradigmas de investigación derivados de corrientes del positivismo,
postpositivismo, la teoría crítica y el constructivismo.

1. Interpretará atentamente la discusión sobre las competencias del Council on Social
Work Education que se desarrollan en el curso para que enriquezca sus
conocimientos y los aplique en clase.
2. Contrastará efectivamente los paradigmas del positivismo, postpositivismo, teoría

C. Actividades que realizará antes del taller
1. Estudie cuidadosamente los objetivos de contenido del taller y anote sus dudas para
que el facilitador pueda aclararlas durante la clase.
2. Lea total y detalladamente el Digital Performance Portfolio Assessment Handbook
que se encuentra en la sección de Supporting Documents y siga las instrucciones
provistas para preparar la portada, la introducción (en inglés) y la autobiografía (en
español) de su portafolio digital.
a. Guarde ahí, semanalmente, todos los trabajos que usted realice y los que el
facilitador le indique, junto a sus respectivas rúbricas, bajo el taller que
corresponda.
b. De esa manera, su portafolio digital está listo para que lo enriquezca con el
material educativo que usted genere, semana tras semana, a lo largo del curso.
Recuerde que el Digital Performance Portfolio forma parte de los criterios de
evaluación del curso.
3. Utilice la Biblioteca Virtual, las referencias específicas del taller, o visite el Centro de
Recursos del Aprendizaje de su campus para definir los siguientes conceptos:

Preparen un bosquejo, y llegue preparado para que participe en una actividad
colaborativa durante el taller.
4. El facilitador creará un Wiki en Blackboard.
a. Acceda dicha herramienta a través del E-lab
i. Explique las diferentes problemáticas o controversias éticas que pueden
surgir durante o como resultado de una investigación de Trabajo Social.
ii. Seleccione la opción Share with class y envíe así su contribución.
iii. Finalmente, comente las entradas de por lo menos tres compañeros.
iv. Llegue preparado a clase para que abunde al respecto.
v. Esta actividad se evaluará con la Rúbrica de Construcción de Párrafo o la
asignada por el facilitador.
5. Escriba un ensayo analítico, de por lo menos dos páginas, en el que:
a. Explique la relevancia y aplicabilidad de la investigación al Trabajo Social.

b. Describa cuál es rol de la profesión del Trabajo Social al estudiar problemas
sociales.
c. Contraste las diferencias que existen entre los paradigmas del positivismo,
postpositivismo, teoría crítica y constructivismo.
i. Incorpore a su trabajo escrito la retroalimentación recibida de NetTutor y
traiga el mismo a clase.
ii. Esta actividad será evaluada con la Rúbrica de Ensayo.
iii. Recuerde incluir una copia del trabajo corregido en el portafolio digital,
junto a su rúbrica, bajo la semana que le corresponde.
6. El facilitador creará un foro de discusión oral utilizando la herramienta de
VoiceThread de Blackboard. En dicho foro, el estudiante elaborará sobre la
aplicabilidad de la investigación científica social en el Trabajo Social. El resto de la
clase reaccionará oralmente a los comentarios de por lo menos tres compañeros.
Tome notas sobre los aspectos más relevantes discutidos por parte de sus colegas y
lleve las anotaciones a clase. El facilitador evaluará esta actividad con la Rúbrica del
foro de discusión oral.
7. Complete el certificado para la protección de sujetos en la investigación IRB
(Institutional Review Board por sus siglas en inglés) y presente la evidencia del
mismo. Si necesita asistencia o mayor información al respecto, contacte al facilitador
a través de Blackboard, o lleve sus dudas a la clase.
8. Vaya a Rosetta Stone Advantage y comience a trabajar los ejercicios que se han
diseñado para desarrollar sus destrezas lingüísticas en español.
D. Actividades de aplicación durante el taller
1. El facilitador proveerá a los estudiantes su información de contacto, y se elegirá al
representante estudiantil.
2. El facilitador explicará detenidamente los requisitos y objetivos del curso, así como los
componentes teóricos. Además, se cerciorará de que los alumnos tengan acceso a
los recursos de Blackboard y el E-Lab. También se asegurará de que los estudiantes
entiendan las expectativas generales y las normas específicas del curso. Igualmente,
destacará la importancia de familiarizarse con todo el contenido del módulo y la forma
en que se evaluará su desempeño durante las actividades antes y durante los talleres.
Además, aclarará el propósito del portafolio digital y aprovechará la ocasión para

especificar aquellas actividades (antes y durante el taller) que se incluirán en el
mismo, así como los recordatorios que dará semanalmente.
3. El facilitador explicará los detalles sobre la acreditación del Council on Social Work
Education, y de las competencias a ser desarrolladas como profesionales del Trabajo
Social, enfatizará en aquellas trabajadas en el curso. Además, explicará los requisitos
para una preparación en Trabajo Social en la Universidad del Este, el perfil del/la
egresado/a, y los componentes del programa de Trabajo Social.
4. El facilitador dividirá a los estudiantes en subgrupos para que discutan y analicen los
temas más importantes expuestos en el ensayo preparado previo al taller sobre: La
relevancia y aplicabilidad de la investigación al Trabajo Social. Describa cuál es rol de
la profesión del Trabajo Social al estudiar problemas sociales. Contraste la diferencia
que existe entre los paradigmas de positivismo, postpositivismo, teoría crítica y
constructivismo. Cada grupo tomará notas sobre la discusión y las compartirán con el
resto del grupo.
5. Retomando el tema del foro de discusión oral, de la plataforma de VoiceThread, toda
la clase conversará y aportará sustantivamente a la discusión acerca de aplicabilidad
de la investigación científica social en el Trabajo Social. El facilitador promoverá la
participación de los estudiantes para que compartan sus opiniones, crítica y
analíticamente, de manera que expresen cómo piensan cumplir con los mismos y si
es necesario actualizarlos, según las prácticas y tendencias del ámbito profesional. El
facilitador clarificará cualquier duda sobre aplicabilidad de la investigación científica
social en el Trabajo Social.
6. El facilitador dirigirá una discusión sobre las diferentes problemáticas o controversias
éticas que pueden surgir durante o como resultado de una investigación en Trabajo
Social. Esta actividad será evaluada con la Rúbrica de comunicación oral o la
asignada por el facilitador.
7. El facilitador organizará un debate; para ello, dividirá la clase en dos grupos. Cada
equipo tendrá la misma cantidad de estudiantes. Un grupo expondrá y defenderá
planteamientos relacionados al positivismo y postpositivimo, mientras que el otro
asumirá posturas y planteamientos a favor de la teoría crítica y el construccionismo.
a. Cada subgrupo tomará una postura: a favor o en contra de las ideas plasmadas
en las lecturas asignadas

b. El facilitador ayudará a los estudiantes para que se dividan equitativamente, de
acuerdo con su ideal.
c. Si hay algún conflicto, se decidirá con una moneda a cara o cruz.
i. Será interesante ver cómo se alejan de su opinión verdadera para asumir
una postura contraria a la que sienten.
ii. Si el número de alumnos es impar, se puede designar como moderador
al estudiante que se quede sin grupo.
a) El moderador controlará el tiempo (con un cronómetro), los turnos y
aclarará las reglas del debate, las cuales dictará el facilitador.
b) El moderador abrirá y cerrará el debate de manera neutral.
c) El moderador concluirá el debate, analizando las posturas vertidas por
sus compañeros, sin compartir la suya.
d. Los equipos se separarán para acordar las estrategias y planteamientos de
su argumentación. Además, esbozarán los posibles escenarios de la
discusión, es decir los argumentos del grupo contrario.
e. El facilitador servirá como mediador y moderador de cierre al finalizar el
ejercicio e interactuará con el moderador del debate para conocer su punto
de vista y qué le pareció la experiencia.
f. El facilitador evaluará esta actividad utilizando la Rúbrica de comunicación
oral.
i. El facilitador estará pendiente del manejo de vocabulario de los alumnos,
prestará atención a la pronunciación, tono, vocabulario, conjugación,
tiempo verbal, lenguaje corporal y las características de la presentación
efectiva de la comunicación oral.
g. Al concluir el ejercicio, podría realizarse una votación secreta para ver qué
opina la clase en realidad.
i. Contestar sí o no a la pregunta del debate
a) El moderador puede compartir los resultados.
h. Practicarán los criterios del manejo de la voz: claridad y proyección; énfasis,
fuerza y volumen; control de la velocidad y las pausas; el ritmo y la
entonación. El facilitador estará pendiente del manejo del lenguaje oral.
Prestará atención al vocabulario de los alumnos, la pronunciación, el tono, la
conjugación, el tiempo verbal, si usa lenguaje coloquial o formal y otros

aspectos de la comunicación oral. También evaluará si estuvieron
controlados durante la discusión. Esto se hace para habituar el oído y
acostumbrarse a expresarse oralmente con propiedad, corrección y
profesionalismo.
8. Los alumnos prepararán su autorreflexión acerca de la relevancia de la
investigación científico social en el Trabajo Social. Si el tiempo apremia, y el
facilitador lo autoriza, los alumnos podrían enviar su documento vía Blackboard
al facilitador, antes de que comiencen a realizar las actividades previas al
próximo taller.
9. Finalmente, el facilitador mencionará y aclarará las tareas que realizarán antes
del próximo taller.

WORKSHOP TWO
Types of Research Methods and their Applications in Social Work
A. Workshop Objectives
During the workshop, the student will
Content
1. Explore the different types of research methods, such as quantitative, qualitative and
mixed focus and understand its applicability in the Social Work profession.
2. Evaluate the difference between the quantitative focus and qualitative focus.
Language
1. Use his or her auditory prowess to enrich the discussion of the brainstorming activity
offered by each student or group in regards of the research method and model, in
order to enrich his or her learning and apply it during class.
2. Evaluate which research method best addresses certain topics, while strengthening
his or her oral communication skills.
3. Research information about quantitative, qualitative and mixed focus.
4. Summarize the benefits and limitations of the mixed focus research method while
perfecting her/his writing style.

C. Activities to be completed before the Workshop
1. Access the Digital Performance Portfolio folder of the previous workshop in
Blackboard and upload the graded documents or artifacts that correspond to
Workshop One (Taller Uno). Follow any other instructions stipulated by the facilitator
for the effective completion of this activity.
2. Use the Virtual Library, suggested resources, and other academic references to find
reliable sources on the following research methods: quantitative, qualitative and

mixed. Prepare a comparative table synthesizing and comparing the most important
ideas of each topic researched. Be prepared to discuss your findings in class.
3. Compose a comparative essay (two-page minimum) discussing the research methods,
comparing the difference between quantitative and qualitative focus, and describing
the relevance of the mixed focus.
a. Be sure to use APA style, include bibliographic citations (the maximum
percentage of quoted material allowed is 30%) and references.
b. Incorporate NetTutor’s feedback into your written work and submit your revised
essay to the facilitator via Blackboard’s email. In addition, bring a copy of your
essay to the workshop.
c. This activity will be evaluated with the Essay Rubric.
4. Access the Digital Performance Portfolio folder of the previous workshop and upload
the graded documents or artifacts that correspond to Workshop One (Taller Uno).
Follow any other instructions stipulated by the facilitator for the effective completion of
this activity.
5. Go to Rosetta Stone Advantage and continue working on the interactive exercises
designed to develop/improve your linguistic skills in English.
D. Application Activities during the Workshop
1. The facilitator will lead the class in a review of the topics discussed in the previous
workshop to ensure students’ comprehension. Students will share one concept
learned so far that was challenging to understand and explain what helped them learn
the concept.
2. The facilitator will divide the class in three small groups and will assign to each of them
one of the research methods: quantitative, qualitative and mixed. Each group will
create and present a definition of the research method assigned. Students will share
their definition with the rest of the class. This activity will be evaluated with the
Speaking Rubric.
3. Maintaining the same groups as with the previous activity, the facilitator will assign a
topic to be analyzed based on the research methods. Each group will create a table
explaining the topic assigned and how that topic would be researched according to the
parameters of each method. This activity will be evaluated with the Paragraph
Construction Rubric.

a. Taking turns with each focus, each group will orally expose their consensus
regarding the topic and analysis of the research methods.
b. Even though this is not a formal oral report, use the correct terminology and
express yourself using correct grammar and enunciation.
c. Send a copy of the finished table to the facilitator using Blackboard. Identify
the table with the names of the members of the group.
4. The facilitator will discuss the instruction of the research project, written and the oral
presentation. The facilitator will notify if the research project will be individually or in
groups.
5. Based on the facilitator’s decision about the type of project (individually or group) that
the students will be making, every student or group will brainstorm about the possible
topic for their research project and the research method that they will be using. Each
student or group will share the information, and the rest of the class and the facilitator
will help them polish the topic and the appropriate research method chosen.
6. Students will compose a self-reflection providing general information on the previous
knowledge related to research methods (quantitative, qualitative and mixed).
a. Students will submit their self-reflection via Blackboard’s email to the facilitator
after the workshop has concluded.
b. The facilitator will reply with individual feedback.
c. Students will place a copy of their graded self-reflection within the
corresponding folder of their Digital Performance Portfolio.
7. The facilitator will conclude the workshop by reviewing the most essential and relevant
points discussed during the class. Afterward, he or she will also mention and clarify the
tasks assigned for the next workshop. In addition, the facilitator will remind students of
the works and rubrics they must place in their digital portfolio, once they have been
graded and returned to students.

TALLER TRES Conceptualización y definición del problema de investigación

del problema a investigar.

D. Actividades de aplicación durante el taller
1. El facilitador repasará las actividades que los estudiantes completaron antes del taller
para comprobar la comprensión del material. Habrá oportunidad para hacer
preguntas y aclarar dudas.
2. El facilitador dividirá la clase en grupos pequeños y asignará a cada grupo uno o más

definitions (literature review, theoretical conceptualization of research and theoretical
framework) prepared as part of the activities before the workshop. Then, the facilitator
will guide the discussion and each pair will share with the rest of the group the
