action of the season for the Cavaliers, as they did not play an exhibition contest.• The Cavaliers are receiving votes in both national polls and are picked to finish sixth in the ACC this

season.• UVA returns 10 letterwinners, including four starters, from last year’s team that went 20-13 overall and

advanced to the second round of the WNIT. Virginia finished eighth in the ACC with a 7-9 record.• The Cavaliers have to replace last year’s leading scorer Breyana Mason (10.3 ppg), but they do return

30-game starters Jocelyn Willoughby (9.8 ppg), Lauren Moses (9.5 ppg) and Dominique Toussaint (9.5 ppg). Willioughby was also UVA’s leading rebounder at 6.2 rpg.

BREAKING DOWN THE SERIES • Mississippi State and Virginia will be meeting for the first time.• MSU is 15-15 all-time against the current members of the ACC. In addition to Virginia, State has never

faced Louisville, Notre Dame or Syracuse. The Bulldogs will face Syracuse in Las Vegas in December.

STATE IN SEASON OPENERS • The Bulldogs are opening the season at Humphrey Coliseum for the fourth time in Vic Schaefer’s six

seasons. The last time it did was Nov. 13, 2015, a 68-47 win against Samford.• MSU has never opened the season against a team from the ACC.• State is 31-12 all-time in season openers after defeating Villanova 108-62 in Bangor, Maine, to begin last

season’s historic run to the national championship game.• The Dawgs have won 13-straight season openers. When beginning the year at home, MSU is 24-0.• MSU has won 22-straight regular-season non-conference contests.

BULLDOGS SENSATIONAL IN HOME OPENERS • Mississippi State has put together an impressive 41-2 all-time record in home openers.• The Bulldogs won their 31st-straight home opener last season when they knocked off No. 8 Texas 79-68.

RAISE THE BANNER • Friday’s game will not only be special because it is the opening of a new season, but also because the

Bulldogs will hold a special pregame ceremony to raise the 2017 National Finalist banner into the rafters of Humphrey Coliseum.

• The ceremony will be an opportunity to honor the best season in program history, one that saw MSU set school records with a 34-5 overall record, a 13-3 SEC mark and 2nd-place league finish before going on to advance to the national championship game in the program’s first Final Four appearance.

• State, which was a school-best No. 2 seed, capped the run to the title game with a thrilling 66-64 upset of UConn in the national semifinal, a win that snapped the Huskies’ record 111-game win streak and won MSU the ESPY for Best Upset.

• MSU will give away 2,500 National Finalist replica banners after the game. Fans can pick up vouchers for the banners on the Humphrey Coliseum concourse during halftime of the women’s game.

MSU TOP 5 IN THE PRESEASON RANKINGS• The USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll was released with Mississippi State claiming the No. 4 posi-

tion. That is the highest preseason ranking in program history.• State ended last season No. 2 in the poll, the best ranking in school annals.• The Bulldogs also landed in the Top 10 of the Associated Press Top 25, coming in at No. 7 That gives

State 56-straight weeks in the AP Top 25, the 7th-longest active streak in the nation. It also marks 20-consecutive weeks in the Top 10, tied for the 6th-longest active streak nationally.

• MSU was also picked fourth in the country in espnW’s preseason poll.

TRIO OF BULLDOGS EARN PRESEASON SEC ACCOLADES• Mississippi State had a trio of players earn Preseason All-SEC honors to start

the year. • MSU placed both Victoria Vivians and Morgan William on the media’s 5-player

All-SEC squad. State was the only team with multiple representatives on the squad, and it is the first time the Bulldogs have had multiple selections.

• League coaches tabbed Vivians and William to their first team, while Teaira McCowan was selected to the second team.

• MSU was picked to finish 2nd in both polls.

VIVIANS, WILLIAM NAMED TO NATIONAL WATCH LISTS• In addition to earning Preseason All-SEC accolades, Vivians and William were

named to a couple of national watch lists prior to the season opener.• Vivians was tabbed to the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch List for the na-

tion’s top shooting guard. • William was selected to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List, the award

presented for the nation’s top point guard.

SENIORS AMONG THE NATION’S BEST• Last year’s senior class (Ketara Chapel, Dominique Dillingham, Chinwe Okorie

and Breanna Richardson) won a school-record 111 games with the upset of UConn that halted the Huskies’ 111-game win streak, but seniors Blair Schaefer, Vivians and William are chasing close behind with 89 career wins.

• Their 89 victories since 2014-15 are 8th-most nationally and 2nd in the SEC.

Most Wins in Division i since 2014-151. UConn 1122. Notre Dame 102 Baylor 1024. South Carolina 1005. Maryland 976. FGCU 90 Oregon St. 908. Mississippi State 899. Stanford 85 Quinnipiac 85

BEWARE OF THE DAWGS• The Bulldogs have protected their house, compiling a 73-14 record at the Hump

under Schaefer. State is 45-4 on the home court since 2014-15.• MSU had the nation’s 3rd-largest average attendance increase in the nation a

year ago (+1,479) after rating 4th each of the 2 seasons prior. • State averaged 6,641 fans last year, the 7th-largest average attendance in the

nation.

VIVIANS GOING FOR 2K• Victoria Vivians enters her senior campaign having scored 1,754 points in her

first three seasons. That total is 4th in school history but just 2 points shy of tying Alexis Rack for 3rd.

• She is 246 points from becoming just the 3rd MSU player to record 2,000 points, the other two being LaToya Thomas (2,981 points) and Tan White (2,421 points).

THE QUEEN OF ALL COURTS• In high school, Victoria Vivians earned the nickname “Queen” for her heralded

prep career. Now she can truly call herself the “Queen of All Courts” as she was voted Mississippi State’s 2017 Homecoming Queen.

• Vivians received over 60% of the vote from the MSU student body.

WILLIAM WRITING HER NAME IN THE RECORD BOOKS• Last season, Morgan William became Mississippi State’s all-time career as-

sists leader (480) as she set the program’s single-season mark (181).• She also looks to stay atop the MSU record books at the free-throw line, as

her 84.3% career free-throw percentage is first in school annals and 9th in SEC history.

WILLIAM, SCHAEFER INVITED TO ESPN• Mississippi State was on the national stage Nov. 2 as Vic Schaefer and William

represented the Bulldogs at Women’s Basketball National Media Day at ESPN Studios in Briston, Conn.

• William and Schaefer appeared on SportsCenter Live in addition to speaking with several other national media outlets and ESPN personalities.

ITTY BITTY FEATURED IN SPORTS ILLUSTRATED• William’s game-winning shot against UConn in last year’s national semifinal

took the nation by storm. The shot earned her an ESPY nomination for Best Play, and it also garnered a feature story on the Birmingham, Ala., native in Sports Illustrated’s 2017 College Basketball Preview issue.

BLAIR, RO KNOCK DOWN THE 3’S• Although last Friday’s exhibition game against UAFS doesn’t count toward the

record books, Blair Schaefer’s 6 3-pointers would have tied for 10th in the school’s single-game record books.

• Roshunda Johnson knocked down 5 triples in the contest as the two senior guards combined for 11 of State’s 15 3-pointers in the game.

• The 15 3-pointers would have been a new program record. The current mark is 14 at Iowa State in 2001.

• Schaefer enters her final season 8th in program history in career 3-point per-centage, having made 35.5% in her first 3 seasons.

• In her first season playing for the Maroon & White, Johnson knocked down the 3-ball at a 43.8% clip (42 of 96), the 3rd-best percentage ever by a Bulldog.

BIG T READY TO MAKE A BIG IMPRESSION• Teaira McCowan was phenomenal off the bench last season to earn SEC

Sixth Woman of the Year. She went on to start all six games of State’s run to the Final Four and was equally as stellar, earning Oklahoma City All-Region Team accolades after averaging 18.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks against Washington and Baylor.

• McCowan enters her junior season 5th at MSU in career blocks with 103. She is 6 back of LaToya Thomas for 4th and 15 shy of Tan White for 3rd.

• She needs 29 rebounds for 500 and 430 points for 1,000.

STATE TO PLAY IN “THE BIG HOUSE”• Last season Mississippi State took #HailStateHoops to the Mississippi Gulf

Coast when it played in Biloxi. This season the Bulldogs are taking the court in a place several have played before: The Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.

• When the Dawgs face Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 29, it will be the first time State has played in “The Capital City” since a 61-54 win against New Orleans on Dec. 21, 2006.

• Vivians led Scott Central to 2 MHSAA Class 2A state titles in the building, earning state tournament MVP both times.

• Jazzmun Holmes helped Harrison Central High School to the Class 6A semi-finals three times, while Ameshya Williams and her West Harrison HS team finished as the state runner-up in 5A her senior season.

DAWGS WIN AN ESPY OVER THE SUMMER• While many college students were taking classes or on vacation during the

summer, members of last season’s National Finalist Bulldogs had the opportu-nity to travel to Los Angeles for the ESPY Awards.

• The Bulldogs walked the red carpet and were presented the ESPY for Best Upset prior to the show.

VIVIANS, MCCOWAN INVITED TO USA U23 TRIALS• Prior to the start of the fall semester, Victoria Vivians and Teaira McCowan

both represented Mississippi State at United States Basketball’s U23 Training Camp.

BULLDOGS GET A 100 ON THE GRA• The NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate was released Tuesday, and Mississip-

pi State earned a school-record 100.• The Bulldogs jumped 6 points from last year and were one of 4 SEC women’s

basketball programs with a 100 (Florida, Kentucky, Missouri).• MSU scored 11 points above the national women’s basketball average (89).• Mississippi State had all 11 eligible players earn spots on the SEC Winter Ac-

ademic Honor Roll last season. That is the most selections among SEC wom-en’s basketball teams for the 2nd-straight year.

BULLDOGS TO BE REGULARS ON THE TELEVISION• Fans can catch Mississippi State on television quite a bit this season. The

Bulldogs will actually have 16 games televised on either the SEC Network, ESPN2 or ESPNU.

• MSU will have non-conference tilts against Oregon and Oklahoma State broadcast on the SEC Network, while 14 of the team’s 16 SEC contests will appear on television.

VIC SCHAEFERHEAD COACH • 6TH SEASON AT MSU

• 2017 WBCA REGION COACH OF THE YEAR• 2017 NAISMITH NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR FINALIST• 2017 ESPY FOR BEST UPSET• 2015 AP SEC COACH OF THE YEAR• 2015 SEC COACHES’ CO-COACH OF THE YEAR• 2015 NAISMITH NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR SEMIFINALIST

• Vic Schaefer is in his sixth season as the Bulldogs’ coach. He owns the second-most victories in program history, and his .709 winning percentage through his first five campaigns is the best in program annals.

• Schaefer has led the Bulldogs to the postseason each of the last four seasons, including three-straight NCAA Tournament berths. After going to the Sweet 16 in 2015-16, the Bulldogs earned national finalist honors in 2017 after advancing to the national title game in the program’s first Final Four appearance.

• He was named WBCA Region Coach of the Year and a finalist for Naismith National Coach of the Year in 2017. In 2015, after guiding State to its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2010, Schaefer was named a semifinalist for the Naismith award after earning SEC Coach of the Year accolades from both his fellow coaches and the Associated Press.

• Schaefer’s Bulldog teams have posted 20-plus wins each of the last four seasons, matching the total number of 20-win seasons by the program in the 38 years prior to his arrival. His 2016-17 team set Mississippi State’s single-season wins record for the third-straight year as it posted a 34-5 ledger. That top mark came after the Bulldogs won 28 games in 2015-16 and 27 in 2014-15.

• His first signing class of Ketara Chapel, Dominique Dillingham, Chinwe Okorie and Breanna Richardson won 22 games in 2013-14 before capping their careers with their program-best 111th victory in State’s Final Four upset of No. 1 UConn, a victory that won MSU the ESPY for Best Upset.

• In addition to the school-record 34 overall wins in 2016-17, the Bulldogs also claimed a pro-gram-best 13 SEC wins en route to claiming their best league finish with a second-place show-ing. The Dawgs also advanced to the SEC Tournament title game for the second-straight year.

• Schaefer picked up his 200th win as a head coach in last season’s NCAA Tournament open-ing-round win against Troy (March 17, 2017).

• Under Schaefer’s guidance, Mississippi State has also drawn record attendance numbers in Humphrey Coliseum. The Top 10 and 17 of the Top 20 crowds in program history have come during his watch, including the first two 10K attendance crowds ever in the state of Mississippi for a women’s basketball game.

• MSU drew 86,328 for 13 home dates last season, a 6,641 average that ranked seventh na-tionally. The Bulldogs’ average attendance was an increase of 1,479 from 2015-16, when State drew a program-record 92,914, the third-largest increase in the nation after the program had the fourth-biggest jump each of the previous two years.

• Schaefer also went to the Final Four in his previous two stops at Texas A&M and Arkansas. In nine seasons in College Station, he helped the Aggies to 212 wins and seven NCAA Tourna-ment appearances, including the 2011 national championship.

• He was part of 121 wins in six seasons at Arkansas, taking the Razorbacks to the Final Four in his first season. The Razorbacks went to four NCAA Tournament appearances and won a WNIT title during his time on the staff in Fayetteville.
