Coming off of a big 3-0 sweep of Virginia in its home opener on Tuesday, Liberty (3-7) heads to Pittsburgh to compete in the Pitt Invite on Friday and Saturday. The Lady Flames changed their plans due to Hurricane Florence, as they were originally scheduled to play in a tournament at SMU this weekend. Liberty will face College of Charleston (7-4) twice (Friday at noon and Saturday at 4 p.m.) while taking on former Big South rival High Point (3-6) on Saturday at 10 a.m. While Liberty and College of Charleston have only met once, the Lady Flames are very familiar with High Point. Liberty is 31-17 all-time against the Panthers in a series that started in 1995. High Point has made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Champion- ship, including an at-large selection in 2017. From 2007 to 2012, either Liberty (2007, 2008, 2011, 2012) or High Point (2010) won every Big South tournament title but one. STARTING ROTATION 1. Liberty made a big statement in its home opener, sweeping Virginia for the first time since 1979. The Lady Flames outhit the Cavaliers, .284-.200 on the evening. Jenna Culhan led Liberty with 10 kills, her third double-digit kill match in a row. 2. Trevor Johnson takes over the program after spending the last two seasons as top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M. A very successful head coach at the NAIA level, he went 86-14 combined at Concordia (Calif.), leading the men’s team to the 2013 NAIA national title. 3. Senior outside hitter Victoria Baptista leads the team in both total kills (77) and double-doubles (3) this season. This season, she became the first Liberty player since Kelly Haseman in 2010 to collect 10 or more digs in each of the first six matches of a season. 4. Junior middle blocker Anna Gragg is a two-time Big South All-Conference performer, including first-team honors in 2017. She posted a season-high eight blocks against Colgate last Saturday, one shy of a career high. Gragg leads the team in total blocks (35) on the season. 5. Junior right-side hitter Casey Goodwin, the 2018 Fan-Voted ASUN Preseason Player of the Year, was a second-team all-conference selection last year. She is the first player in the program’s rally- scoring history with at least one 20-kill match as a freshman, sophomore and junior. 6. Senior Margaret Latchford needs five more digs to become the seventh player in program history with 1,500 or more digs. She tied her season high with 23 digs against Colgate last Saturday and was named to the Maryland Invite All-Tournament Team. 7. Coming off of a big 3-0 sweep of Virginia in its home opener on Tuesday, Liberty (3-7) heads to Pittsburgh to compete in the Pitt Invite on Friday and Saturday. The Lady Flames changed their plans due to Hurricane Florence, as they were originally scheduled to play in a tournament at SMU this weekend. Team Notes- Last Saturday against Colgate, Liberty placed five players (Jenna Culhan, Amelia Johnson, Kailey Macy, Victoria Baptista and Anna Gragg) in double figures in kills. It was the first time since Oct. 29, 2010 at Charleston Southern that five Lady Flames reached double digits in kills in the same match.- Liberty overcame a 24-20 deficit in set two on Aug. 31 against Houston Baptist, winning the set, 27-25. It tied for the most consecutive set points fought off by the Lady Flames in a match under the current 25-point scoring system (Nov. 3, 2012 at Campbell).- The Lady Flames are 3-1 this season when hitting .230 or better in a match, and 0-6 when hitting .229 or lower.- Liberty led the Big South in blocks per set in both 2016 (2.45) and 2017 (2.15). The Lady Flames then posted 15 blocks in a 3-2 win over Oakland on Aug. 24, the first of four 10-block matches for the team so far in 2018.- A total of 16 out of its first 17 matches are away from the Vines Center. Then, the Lady Flames will play a program-record nine straight home matches during the month of October.- After finishing the 2017 season averaging 0.84 aces per set, Liberty’s service game has improved this year, averaging 1.62 aces per set, good for 61st in the nation.- Casey Goodwin’s sixth ace of the match clinched set five, 18-16, against Oakland on Aug. 24, sealing Trevor Johnson’s first win as head coach of the Lady Flames.- Liberty fell to Purdue Fort Wayne, 43-41, in set one on Aug. 25. It was tied for the fourth-longest set in NCAA Division I history under the current 25-point scoring system.- Liberty welcomes five newcomers to the roster in freshmen Madi Furtado, Lilly Kruse, Sydney Street and Aspen Thompson and transfer Amelia Johnson (North Dakota). Furtado, Kruse, Street and Johnson all made their Liberty debuts on the season-opening weekend in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Player Notes- Junior Anna Gragg currently ranks eighth in the ASUN with 0.95 blocks per set. She set a program freshman record with 108 blocks in 2016.- Gragg earned a tryout for the US National Team in Colorado Springs, Colo., in March.- Gragg is the first Liberty player since Jade Craycraft (2010-11) to be named all-conference as both a freshman and a sophomore.- Junior Casey Goodwin served up a career-high six aces on Aug. 24 against Oakland. She is cur-rently tied for 72nd nationally with 0.43 aces per set. - Goodwin registered her first career double-double with 20 kills and 11 digs at Purdue Fort Wayne, Aug. 25, in her 62nd career match.- Senior Margaret Latchford set a program freshman record with 502 digs in 2015. - Latchford has appeared in 364 consecutive sets, a streak that started during her freshman season. Her consecutive-sets played streak is the longest by a Lady Flame since Loren Thomas appeared in 462 straight sets from 2009 through the end of her career in 2012. Latchford has registered 21 20-dig matches and 75 career double-digit dig contests.- Senior Victoria Baptista recorded her first career double-double on Aug. 25 at Purdue Fort Wayne, with 11 kills and a season-high 18 digs, then recorded a career-high 13 kills at 12 digs in her next match, Aug. 31 against South Carolina. She leads the Lady Flames with three double-doubles this year, as Casey Goodwin and Hannah Morris have one double-double each.- Redshirt sophomore Amelia Johnson spent her first two years at North Dakota, as the Fighting Hawks won the Big Sky and appeared in the NCAA Tournament in both 2016 and 2017.- Johnson leads the team with 2.43 kills per set this year. She scored 10 kills on Aug. 24 against Oakland, her first career start, and sent down a career-high 12 kills versus Colgate, last Saturday.- Junior Hannah Morris, a setter from Liberty Christian Academy, has an older sister, Rachel Morris, who served as a backup setter for the Lady Flames in 2014 and 2015.- Morris has led the Lady Flames in assists in nine out of the 10 matches so far this season. Her season-high 40 assists against Colgate served as her first 40-assist match since her freshman year.- Junior Payton Carter scored a career-high 12 kills on Sunday at Maryland, and then played a key role late in a 27-25 set-one win over Virginia on Tuesday, serving an ace to clinch the set.- Sophomore Jenna Culhan scored a career-high 16 kills on Saturday against Colgate, and has gone for double figures in kills in each of the last two matches. She is the first Liberty player this season to score 10 or more kills in each of three consecutive matches.- Sophomore Amaya Williams was the first Liberty freshman to lead Liberty in assists since Jade Craycraft in 2010. - Redshirt freshman Kailey Macy played a major role in Liberty’s 3-2 win over Oakland, scoring a team-high 11 kills and adding a match-high seven blocks. HEAD COACH TREVOR JOHNSON8TH HEAD COACH IN LIBERTY VOLLEYBAL HISTORY

Trevor Johnson was named the eighth head coach in Liberty volleyball history on Dec. 18, 2017. An accomplished player turned coach, Johnson came to Liberty having the distinction of being the only athlete in the history of the NAIA to win a national championship as a player, assistant coach and head coach. He is 86-14 as a head coach, having led Concordia (CA), a first-year program, to the 2013 NAIA national title and earning NAIA AVCA National Coach of the Year Honors. Johnson spent two season (2016, 2017) as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M, helping the Aggies land the No. 18 ranked recruiting class in the country in 2017. He served as the top volleyball assistant coach at Baylor in 2015, helping the Bears to a 20-12 record, the program’s highest win total in four season. Johnson spent five years at Concordia University in Irvine, Calif., including two years as an assistant women’s volleyball coach (2011-12), one year as head men’s volleyball coach (2013) and two years as Director of Volleyball (2013-15). During the 2011-12 seasons with Concordia’s women’s program, the Eagles won the NAIA national title in 2012 with a perfect 38-0 overall record and posted a 37-2 mark en route to a national-runner-up finish in 2011. Johnson’s efforts with Concordia were recognized by the AVCA in 2011 when he was named the AVCA 30 Under 30 Award recipient and the Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year. During his final three seasons at Concordia, Johnson served as Director of Volleyball, serving as head women’s coach and oversaw the men’s volleyball and sand volleyball programs. Johnson guided the women’s program to back-to-back GSAC conference championships and he had seven players earn NAIA All-America honors. Johnson served as assistant men’s and women’s volleyball coach at Cal Baptist in Riverside, Calif., during the 2007-09 and 2010-11 seasons. The Lancers posted a 127-39 record in his five years with the programs, with the men’s team winning the 2011 NAIA national championship. Johnson was an accomplished volleyball player on the court during his time as a four-year starter at California Baptist. He helped the Lancers win back-to-back NAIA national titles in 2004 and 2005 and he trained with the USA Men’s National Volleyball team in 2005 and 2006. Born in Phoenix, Ariz., and raised in Cerritos, Calif., Johnson and his wife, Jane, have a son, Riley, and a daughter, Chloe.
