The Game The Liberty men’s basketball team returns to the Vines Center on Thursday to play host to fellow Commonwealth competitor, Radford. The Flames look to snap a three-game skid, while the Highlanders are currently tied for fourth place, one game back of top seeds High Point and Charleston Southern. Radford enters Thursday’s matchup leading the all-time series, 35-30. Liberty will attempt to halt a three-game losing streak against its most com-mon opponent, while also picking up its fi rst win against the Highlanders in nearly two years. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., with the contest broadcasting live on the Liberty Flames Sports Network, MASNHD, ESPN3 and the Big South Network.

What to Watch for- Joe Retic returned on Saturday after missing 12 games due to a fractured foot. He played for 14 minutes, fi nishing with two points. Retic checked in at the 15:06 mark and posted his lone basket at 12:48. Look for Retic’s role to increase as the team heads into postseason play.- Andrew Smith (683 points) needs 17 more points to reach 700 for his collegiate career. He is currently tied for 41st on Liberty’s all-time scoring list with Nathan Day.- Jordan Dembley is continuing to take full advantage in his role as a starter. Dembley concluded Saturday’s contest with 21 minutes of game action and a career-high 10 points.- Liberty’s loss at Gardner-Webb marks the fi rst time the Flames have gone winless in true road games since the 2005-06 season and the fi rst time Liberty has failed to win a road or neutral site game in the regular season since the 1998-99 campaign.- Liberty is currently 7-7 in the Vines Center, this season, and went 7-8 in the facility last year. The last time the Flames fi nished below .500 at home in back-to-back seasons was the 1997-98 and 1998-99 campaigns.- In the seven games freshman point guard Jordan Dembley has started, the Flames have averaged 13.4 turnovers per game. In the 22 games prior, the Flames were averaging 17.3 miscues per contest.- In the last six games, Theo Johnson is leading the Flames with 13.8 ppg.

Gielo to Apply for Medical Redshirt Liberty Men’s Basketball Head Coach Dale Layer has announced that senior forward Tomasz Gielo will apply for a medical redshirt for the 2014-15 season. The Poland native will look to return next season for a fi fth year after missing the last 19 games due to a stress fracture in his right foot. “It has been tough being without Tomasz for most of the season,” Layer stated. “He is an impact player on both ends of the fl oor and we miss him in many ways. However, since his injury is not completely healed and he has not been cleared to play, we realized that he will unfortunately, not be able to come back this season. He will be completely healed at some point and we will look forward to him coming back next year.” Prior to his injury, Gielo led the Flames in scoring through the fi rst seven contests of the season, averaging 12.0 points per game. The senior captain was also third in re-bounding during the span, grabbing 6.3 boards per contest. In Liberty’s 61-55 win over Delaware on Nov. 17, Gielo paced the Flames’ offense with a career-high 23 points. If granted a fi fth year of competition, Gielo will look to become the 25th member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club, as he is currently 276 tallies shy of the milestone (724 points). The forward is also tied for 29th on the program’s all-time rebounding list with 410 boards.

Smith Selected for Dark Horse Dunker Competition Liberty men’s basketball senior forward Andrew Smith has advanced to the second round in the State Farm Dark Horse Dunker Competition. Voting is offi cially underway at DarkHorseDunker.com, as Smith is matched up against Malcom Miller of Holy Cross. Upon accessing the website, fans will be prompted to sign in via Twitter, Facebook or provide their email address to vote. Each individual user can vote once per day. The State Farm Dark Horse Dunker is a bracket-style elimination competition. Sec-ond round voting is open for one week and features four head-to-head matchups. Win-ners will be announced Feb. 25 when the semifi nal round opens. Voting for the semifi nals and the fi nals will also be open one week each. The champion will be announced March 11 at DarkHorseDunker.com and will travel to Indianapolis to compete in the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships, which airs April 2 live on ESPN.

Former Marquette Guard Dawson Transfers to Liberty Liberty Men’s Basketball Head Coach Dale Layer has announced that former Mar-quette guard John Dawson has transferred to Liberty. The sophomore will sit out one year due to the NCAA transfer rule and will be eligible in January 2016. “We are extremely pleased that John Dawson is part of our Flames Basketball Pro-gram,” Layer stated. “John is a highly skilled, tough, multi-position guard who can score and defend at a very high level. He can be a defensive stopper and can score it in multiple ways. He comes from a terrifi c family and fi ts Liberty University in every way.” Dawson (So., 6-2, 205, Clovis, N.M.) appeared in 24 games for the Golden Eagles, last season, averaging 2.0 points and 1.1 rebounds per game. The New Mexico native was instrumental in Marquette’s 80-72 overtime win over Georgetown on Jan. 20, 2014, fi nishing with a career-high 12 points. This year, Dawson played in Marquette’s season opener against UT Martin, before electing to transfer at the end of the fall semester. Prior to his time at Marquette, Dawson was selected fi rst team all-state at Clovis High School, leading the program to the state championship with a 23-7 record. Dawson aver-aged 15.0 points, 5.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game, helping his team win a district title. The previous year, Dawson led his team to a district championship and the state semifi nals. The guard averaged 18.0 points, 9.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds en route to a fi rst team all-state selection. Ranked as the top player in New Mexico by several media outlets, Dawson also played travel basketball with BYC Elite under head coach Michael Clay.

Moller to Miss Time Due to Family Emergency Liberty Men’s Basketball Head Coach Dale Layer has announced that freshman guard Peter Moller will miss games due to a family emergency. The timetable for Moller’s return is uncertain. In 25 games this season, Moller has averaged 7.2 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. The Denmark native also earned Big South Freshman of the Week honors earlier this season following a career-high 22 points against Bluefi eld College on Dec. 13.

Injury Report Liberty men’s basketball junior point guard Joe Retic has suffered a left foot fracture, and underwent surgey. Retic is expected to be out indefi nitely due to the injury, which oc-curred in the fi rst half of Liberty’s matchup against UNC Asheville (Jan. 8). Through the fi rst 16 games, Retic averaged 7.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.9 steals per contest. The Indianapolis, Ind., native was fi rst among Big South players in steals and second in assists. Freshman forward Ezra Talbert will miss the remainder of the season and will apply for a medical redshirt following back surgery. Playing in just fi ve contests this season due to back issues, Talbert recorded fi ve points in Liberty’s 94-65 victory over Central Penn.

Fast Break- In his Liberty debut against Randolph College, A.C. Reid knocked down a trio of three-pointers to fi nish with 12 points. Reid’s point total marked the fi rst time a Liberty freshman has posted double-digit scoring fi gures in a season opener in exactly six years. In Liberty’s season opener on Nov. 14, 2008 against Montreat, Seth Curry fi nished with 23 points in the 97-77 victory.- In Liberty’s 61-55 victory over Delaware, Tomasz Gielo posted a career-high 23 points. Liberty’s win that night was also the program’s 600th victory.- After redshirting last season, Ryan Kemrite made his presence known at Virginia Tech, fi nishing with 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting, which included a trio of three-pointers.- Andrew Smith posted 10 points while tying a career high with 13 rebounds versus Mor-gan State, earning himself a spot on the Cancun Challenge All-Tournament team.- James Johnson posted a career-high 20 points versus Central Penn, going 9-of-10 from the fi eld. The performance marked the third time a Flame has posted at least 20 points in a game, this season.- Liberty’s 78-58 win over Cincinnati Christian marked Dale Layer’s 350th career win and 80th with the Flames.- David Andoh posted a career-high 24 points at Longwood, marking the most points by a Flame, this season.- In Liberty’s game against Radford on Jan. 24, Theo Johnson fi nished with a career-high 19 points.- Ryan Kemrite posted a career-high 14 points in back-to-back games against Presbyte-rian (Feb. 6) and Campbell (Feb. 10).- Against Longwood on Feb. 17, Andrew Smith paced the Flames with a career-high 21 points, becoming the fi fth Liberty player to post 20 or more points, this season.

Gielo and Moller Compete for National Teams During the summer, senior forward Tomasz Gielo and freshman guard Peter Moller competed in the 2015 Eurobasket 2nd Qualifying Round for their respective national teams. Gielo played in fi ve games for Poland, averaging 3.6 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. Gielo enters this season coming off his best year at Liberty in 2013-14. The Poland native was the team’s leader in rebounds with 5.9 rpg, while chipping in 10.9 ppg. Gielo posted a career-high 20 points on three occasions, doing so at home against Princeton (Jan. 4) and the Flames’ pair of games against Longwood (Jan. 22 and Feb. 25). The senior enters the year with 640 career points, which ranks him 43rd on Liberty’s all-time scoring list. Moller competed in the tournament as a member of the Denmark national team, ap-pearing in four contests. Prior to coming to Liberty, Moller played as a combo guard for Vaerloese-Denmark, while completing his education through Falkonergaardens High School. This past season, he concluded the year as the second leading Danish scorer in the league at 15.2 ppg, while averaging 3.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Moller also posted double scoring fi gures in 25-of-28 games, including a season-high 29-point performance. In addition to his club level experience, Moller competed in 50-plus games with the Danish National Team in international competition against some of the best teams in Eu-rope. Along with fi nishing as the leading scorer in the 2012 Nike International Euroleague Competition, Moller was also named MVP of the Nordic Championship. Moller recently received the Youth Player of the Year Award for all of Denmark, awarded to the country’s top young talent.

Moller Named Big South Freshman of the Week Liberty men’s basketball freshman Peter Moller was named Big South Freshman of the Week for games played Dec. 8-14. Moller’s 22-point performance marks the fi rst time a Liberty freshman has posted 20 points or more points since Feb. 27, 2010, when Evan Gordon posted 24 points in a 74-61 win over Charleston Southern. Moller is also the fi rst Flame to score at least 20 points in a half since Davon Marshall recorded 29 second half points in a 102-101 defeat at Longwood (Feb. 19, 2013).

Fun Facts(Special thanks to Alan York - LFSN radio play-by-play)- While A.C. Reid is billed from Spring Branch, Texas, he originally grew up in Virginia Beach, Va. Both of his parents played basketball at Norfolk State. - Born and raised in Alaska, freshman guard Calvin Hoffman spends his summers helping his family fi sh commercially for red salmon. - While he says their styles of play aren’t the same, freshman center Evan Maxwell’s favorite NBA player growing up was none other than Vince Carter. Maxwell did not begin playing basketball until he was in ninth grade.- Freshman forward Ezra Talbert originally received an offer to play at Creighton before eventually signing with Liberty. - Despite being from California, Theo Johnson received more offers from east coast pro-grams coming out of high school. During his time at College of Charleston, Johnson was known as “The Circus,” a nickname given for his high-fl ying abilities.- Liberty has three international players on its roster this season – Tomasz Gielo (Poland), Peter Moller (Denmark) and David Andoh (Canada). Prior to coming to Liberty, Andoh played at San Jose State and Merritt College.- Although Peter Moller is listed as a freshman, he is currently 20 years old. The Denmark product attended an Olympic style program that combined academics and high level ath-letics, which prolonged his high school career. - David Andoh and assistant coach Vince Walden are no strangers to one another. Prior to Andoh playing at San Jose State, Walden coached the forward at IMG Academy.

Layer Announces Three for Signing Day Dale Layer has announced the signing of Robin Jorch, Jakub Karwowski and Caleb Homesley for the 2015-16 academic year. Jorch will come to Liberty on a scholarship agreement, while Karwowski and Homesley each signed national letters of intent. Jorch (F, 6-9, 235, Berlin, Germany) will make his way to the Hill City after training at the International Berlin Basketball Academy as member of RSV Eintracht Stahnsdorf, where he was the second leading scorer (12.0 ppg) and rebounder (5.3 rpg). Jorch spent four years with the German National Team, playing in various European Championships held in Montenegro, Poland, Lithuania and Greece. A NBBL U19 All-Star selection, Jorch was also a member of the German Youth Championship team. Karwowski (F, 6-11, 200, Kanie, Poland) comes to Liberty with a similar background as current Flames senior forward and captain Tomasz Gielo, who also attended SMS Cetniewo Sports Academy in Poland. The Sports Academy, coached by Marcin Klozinski, regularly attracts the top Polish players, where only the elite in the country are invited to attend the exclusive academy. He is currently under consideration to make the U20 team for next summer. Homesley (G, 6-4, 175, Indian Trails, N.C.) averaged 19.7 points and four assists per game during his junior year at Porter Ridge High School under head coach Jim Rhodes. In his two varsity seasons with the Hawks so far, Homesley had a combined average of 14.0 ppg.

Gielo, Layer and Retic Voted Team Co-Captains Liberty Men’s Basketball Head Coach Dale Layer has announced that senior forward Tomasz Gielo, redshirt junior guard Ethan Layer and junior guard Joe Retic will serve as the team co-captains for the 2014-15 season. The trio was selected by a team vote. “[Tomasz, Joe and Ethan] have all grown in their unselfi shness and are thinking about the team fi rst rather than themselves,” Layer said. “I think our current players realize that and thought those were the guys they wanted to follow. I’m very excited about that be-cause I think it is well deserved.”
