HISTORY

Inspired by the seniors she met in nursing homes who were there because they had no family to help with tasks they could no longer perform on their own, Jane Hart founded Hart Felt Ministries in 2002. She heard God calling her to train 200 hands to help lift the burdens of seniors in need. Over the years, Hart Felt has trained close to 1700 hands. It is through this network of volunteers that Hart Felt carries out its mission to help seniors age in place.

Our Services

Companionship Services

Through a network of volunteers, Hart Felt seniors were the beneficiaries of nearly 3,200 hours of friendly visits during 2017. Sometimes all a lonely senior needs is an ear to listen, a hand to hold, or a friend to work a puzzle with. Other times, they might need assistance with light housekeeping, organizing bills, moving a piece of furniture, or going to the grocery store. These tasks seem so simple but having help from a reliable, trustworthy volunteer is life-changing.

The Veterinary Fund

Pets are a great source of companionship to lonely seniors. They play an important role in many of our clients’ lives, and offer health benefits as well – from serving as a stress release to promoting physical activity and establishing routines. By helping purchase food or pay vet expenses, The Veterinary Fund helped 12 seniors, spending $1945 to alleviate the expenses associated with pet ownership.

Wheelchair Ramps

In 2005, the Ministry built its first wheelchair ramp, expanding its services to meet client needs. 2017 saw the addition of two new Ramp Teams for a total of six. They include Builders Care, Christian Family Chapel, Mandarin Rotarians, Marand Builders and Shepherd of the Woods Lutheran Church. The original team – The Hart Felt Team – makes up the sixth team. Each ramp is built to city specs and is overseen by a licensed contractor. In 2017, we built 24 ramps, a record high!

OUR SERVICES

2017 was a year of tremendous growth for The Hart Fund, a program that provides emergency financial assistance and funds critical needs and minor home repairs. While assisting seniors in this way has a tangible benefit, it is the lifting of a burden that resonates most with us. We hear time and time again sheer gratitude, and reports of clients being able to sleep again knowing they no longer have to worry about a floor that’s caving in or how they are going to pay to have their air conditioner repaired in the heat of the summer.

The Hart Fund includes:Emergency Financial Assistance • Critical Needs • Minor Home Repairs

Volunteers truly are the “heart” of the ministry. Because of our volunteers, we are able to offer all services at NO COST to the clients. This includes everything from transportation to light housekeeping to constructing a wheelchair ramp. In 2017, volunteers served more than 11,000 hours to our clients.

Each February, Hart Felt hosts a Volunteer Appreciation event. We were excited to host approximately 80 people, handing out Presidential Service Awards to volunteers who logged 100 or more hours and a Lifetime Achievement Award to long-time volunteer Joy Martin. She has been with Hart Felt since its inception.

In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35

A sold out crowd gathered at TPC Sawgrass on September 29 for the 7th Annual Bridging the Gaps Charity Gala. The evening included dinner, dancing, a live and silent auction and a special presentation by ethereal angel painter, Anne Neilson. Jazz performer Michael Hulett provided music and Nick Edwards served as emcee. One of the highlights of the evening was a video featuring the relationship between Mr. Gus and his volunteer Lee Force.

A special thank you goes to Marand Builders for being the host sponsor of this event and to Judge and Barbara Moorman for a special contribution. Corporate sponsors included Acosta, Corner Lot Development Group, Advanced Disposal, Brookdale Senior Living Solutions, WOW! Hair Salon, Balanced Nutrition of Jacksonville, Hanan Properties, Retirement Strategies, Inc., and White Subcontractors. In-Kind sponsors were Focal Point Productions, Minuteman Press – Park Street, and The Promise.

The evening grossed $64,925 with a net profit of $38,185 to help First Coast seniors age in place.
