NONPROFITECRWSS

U.S. POSTAGE PAIDORTONVILLE, MIPERMIT NO. 85I am sad to say that my first library

memories as a small child were not particularly warm and fuzzy. Story time was in the basement of a rather drab, institutional-looking structure and I remember always being ushered in and out by my mother on a strict schedule. However, as I grew old enough to be on my own, that same library became my favorite place on Earth, the place where the whole world opened up before my eyes.

With that being said, the Board and Staff of Brandon Library are happy to announce a policy change that we think will have a long-term effect and benefit on the children in our community. We now wholeheartedly welcome children in the library after school whether or not they are registered in a program. The following is an excerpt from the Board-approved policy that was recently adopted:

POLICY STATEMENTThe goal of the library is to maintain a welcoming environment that encourages families to explore library resources and share learning opportunities. The library wants adults and children of all ages to have a safe, positive experience. Unattended children may act in a manner not in compliance with the library’s code of conduct thus adversely affecting other customers’ library experience and diverting staff from providing service to other customers.

REGULATIONS1. For their own protection, children under the age of 8 must be accompanied and adequately supervised by a caregiver age 16 or older at all times. The library is a public place and, as such, cannot be responsible for unattended children.

Often policies are created with language that may sound a little stern, but please know that your children are absolutely welcome to join us after school or on Saturdays to read, do homework, play, study, participate in a fun or educational class, or just hangout. We hope that you will encourage your children to make library visits a regular part of their after-school routine, so that they, too, may say Brandon Library is their favorite place on Earth.
