What does it mean to Develop Higher-Level Understanding in our Students?

Getting beyond application level

Asking students to explain their reasoning

Asking students to explain why they are

learning something or to summarize the

main idea

Asking students to apply a new skill or

concept in a different context

Prompting students to make connections to

previous material or prior knowledge

When scaffolding, push students to interact with

the content with more depth by posing higher‐

order questions.  Consider using Question Stems

like the following:

Can you show me another way to get the

answer?

How is ________ similar to/different from

________?

What is the bid idea/key concept that

connects ________ &___________?

What conclusions might be drawn from

__________?

If you knew the answer, what would you say?

What are the characteristics of __________?

What ideas/details can you add to

________?

How can you “punch a hole” in this logic?

In what other way might we show/illustrate

__________?
