LIGHT ON THE L, NOT ON THE THRILL: Wil Myers had a career season, hitting .259 (155-for-599) with 29 doubles, four triples, 28 home runs, 94 RBI and 99 runs scored to go along with 68 walks, 28 stolen bases and a .797 OPS (.336 OBP, .461 SLG). Became the first Padre in team history to post a season with 25-or-more doubles, home runs and stolen bases and was one of just three in the Majors in 2016 to post those numbers this season, joining Mookie Betts (42 doubles, 31 homers, 26 stolen bases) and Mike Trout (32 doubles, 29 home runs and 30 stolen bases). Myers was named to his first career National League All-Star team in 2016, hitting .286 (97-for-339) with 19 doubles, two triples, 19 home runs, 60 RBI and 61 runs scored with 15 stolen bases and an .873 OPS over 87 games in the first half of the season. Myers started the game for the National League team, batting cleanup as the designated hitter and going 1-for-3 with a double in the NL’s 4-2 loss to the American League. At home in 2016 he hit .306 (93-for-304) with 20 doubles, two triples, 18 homers, 58 RBI and 60 runs in 80 games, compared to .210 (62-for-295) with 10 home runs and a .633 OPS in 77 games on the road. He set Petco Park single-season records in several categories, including hits (93), home runs (18), RBI (58) and runs (60), along with a .306 average that ranked tops among all players with at least 250 at-bats in a single season in Downtown San Diego. Enjoyed his best month of the season in June when he was named National League Player of the Month after hitting .327 (32-for-98) with 10 doubles, 11 home runs, 33 RBI and 25 runs scored in 26 games. His 33 RBI in June led all Major League players, as did his 21 extra-base hits while his 75 total bases led all National League players. MAN WITH THE WINNING HAND: Brad Hand posted a career season for the Padres, going 4-4 with a 2.92 ERA (29 ER, 89.1 IP) and 111 strikeouts against 36 walks while holding opponents to a .195 (63-for-323) op- ponents average in a Major League-leading 82 relief appearances. His 82 appearances were the second-most ever by a Padres reliever in a single season, behind only Craig Lefferts’ 83 outings in 1986. His 111 strikeouts on the season were tied with Trevor Hoffman (1996 and 1997) for the third- most ever in a single season by a Padres reliever, behind only Lance McCullers (126 in 1987) and Rollie Fingers (113 in 1977). His 111 strikeouts were the fourth-most by any Major League reliever in 2016, behind only Dellin Betances (126), Andrew Miller (123) and Kyle Barraclough (113)…were the second-most by any left- handed reliever behind only Miller’s 123. Began his season by being designated for assignment by the Marlins on 4/3 and later acquired off waivers by the Padres on 4/8, spending the rest of the season with San Diego. Per Fangraphs.com, his 1.6 WAR was the eighth-best mark among all qualifying NL relievers. Over a 30-game span from 6/21 - 8/23 he went 2-1 with a 1.47 ERA (5 ER, 30.2 IP) and 33 strikeouts against nine walks while holding opponents to a .154 (16-for-104) average. AMERICA’S ALL-STAR CITY: In 2016 the Padres and the city of San Diego hosted Major League Baseball’s 87th All-Star Game at Petco Park, the third time San Diego has hosted the All-Star Game and the first time the game had ever been hosted at Petco Park…previously held in San Diego in 1992 and 1978. The Padres had two players participate in the All-Star Game with Myers serving as the starting DH for the “visiting” National League squad and Drew Pomeranz working a scoreless inning of relief. LET’S PUT ANOTHER SCHIMPF ON THE BARBIE: Ryan Schimpf made his Major League debut for the Padres in 2016 at the age of 28 and hit .217 (60-for-276) with 17 doubles, five triples, 20 home runs, 51 RBI and 48 runs scored to go along with an .869 OPS (.336 OBP, .533 SLG) in 89 games played. After signing with the Padres as a minor league free agent prior to the season he began the year with Triple-A El Paso where he hit .355 (59-for-166) with 17 doubles, 15 home runs and 48 RBI in 51 games before having his contract selected on 6/14 for his first career call-up. Over his first 13 Major League games from 6/14-29 he hit just .103 (3-for-29) before hitting .231 (57- for-247) with 20 home runs and 50 RBI from 7/1 through the end of the season. Of his 60 hits on the season, 42 were for extra-bases with 17 doubles, five triples and 20 home runs, a ratio of 69.5% of his hits going for extra-bases…that percentage was the highest among all Major League players with at least 25 hits in 2016. His 20 homers were the third-most all-time by a Padres rookie in a single season, behind Nate Colbert (24 in 1969) and Jedd Gyorko (23 in 2013). His 20 homers also were the second-most ever by a Padres second baseman in a single season, behind only Gyorko’s 23 in 2013. He finished tied for fourth among all Major League rookies with 20 home runs, fourth among all NL rookies. TALENT ACQUISITION: Over several transactions in 2016 the Padres accumulated a number of prospects into the organization, through trades as well as the amateur First-Year Player Draft and International signings. Of the Padres Top 30 prospects, per MLB.com’s ranking at the end of the year, 19 played their first season in the organization in 2016. Cal Quantrill, the club’s number one overall selection in the 2016 Draft, had two promotions in his first professional year, from the Arizona Summer League to the Northwest League to the Midwest League, making 12 starts total…in five starts for Tri-City he posted a 1.93 ERA, allowing just four earned runs in 18.2 innings with 28 strikeouts against two walks. Eric Lauer, one of the club’s three first-round selections in the 2016 Draft, posted a 2.03 ERA in 10 minor league starts total this year, allowing a .211 average and nine walks against 37 strikeouts in 31.0 total innings. Hudson Potts, one of the club’s three first-round selections in the 2016 Draft, in 59 games in the Arizona Summer League hit .280 with 12 doubles, three triples, one home run, 27 RBI and 42 runs scored with 10 stolen bases. Josh Naylor, who was acquired via trade with the Marlins in July, in 122 games total hit .264 with 29 doubles, two triples, 12 homers, 75 RBI and 59 runs. Anderson Espinoza, who was acquired from the Red Sox in exchange for LHP Drew Pomeranz on 7/14, at age 18 made 24 starts in A-ball, ap- pearing in 25 games total, striking out 100 batters in 108.1 innings pitched. Chris Paddack, who was acquired from the Marlins in June, went 2-0 with a 0.85 ERA (4 ER, 42.1 IP) and 71 strikeouts against just five walks in nine total starts before having season-ending Tommy John surgery. The club also signed eight of MLB.com’s Top 30 international prospects this signing period, including players such as INF Luis Almanzar (ranked No. 2 International prospect by Baseball America in the 2016 class), INF Gabriel Arias (ranked No. 4 by Baseball America), OF Jeisson Rosa- rio (ranked No. 6 by Baseball America), C Alison Quintero (ranked No. 22 by Baseball America), INF Justin Lopez (ranked No. 28 by Baseball America), OF Tirso Ornelas (ranked No. 34 by Baseball America), RHP Michell Miliano (ranked No. 48 by Baseball America) and INF Yordy Barley (ranked No. 50 by Baseball America). AY CHIHUAHUA!: The El Paso Chihuahuas, the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate, captured their first Pacific Coast League title in 2016.• El Paso played Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Yankees) of the International League for the 2016 Triple-A Championship, falling short of the title.• Key contributors to the PCL Championship for El Paso included Manuel Margot, Austin Hedges, Hunter Renfroe and Carlos Asuaje who hit a com-

bined .306 with 20 RBI and 25 runs scored in El Paso’s eight postseason games to capture the PCL title.

THE CALL UPS: Following the Triple-A Championship game, several El Paso players were tapped for their first career Big League call-ups, including INF Carlos Asuaje, OFs Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe and LHP Jose Torres…Padres C Austin Hedges, who made his Major League debut in 2015, was also recalled on the same day for his first Major League action of 2016.

• Renfroe led the group, hitting .371 (13-for-35) with three doubles, four home runs, 14 RBI and eight runs scored in 11 games before the end of the season to start his Big League career, earning National League Player of the Week honors during the final week of the season.

• Renfroe was also named the 2016 Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player, hitting .306 (163-for-533) with 34 doubles, five triples, 30 home runs, 105 RBI and 95 runs scored in 133 games for El Paso, ranking tied for the PCL lead in homers.

• Carlos Asuaje was named the 2016 PCL Rookie of the Year, the second year a Chihuahua was named PCL ROY after Alex Dickerson won the award last year…in his first year with the Padres, Asuaje recorded 172 hits in 134 games, the most hits among all Triple-A players and fourth-most in minor league baseball…his 253 total bases ranked third in the PCL behind Renfroe’s 297.

• Margot ranked tied for the PCL lead with 98 runs scored (also, Asuaje), hitting .304 with 30 stolen bases in 124 games played.• Hedges hit .326 with 21 home runs and 82 RBI in just 82 games for El Paso, posting a .951 OPS on the year. • Asuaje, Margot and Renfroe each participated in the 2016 Futures Game at Petco Park as well, during All-Star Week in San Diego.

THE “BOOK” STOPS HERE: Ryan Buchter had a career season in 2016, making his first career Opening Day roster out of Spring Training and going 3-0 with a 2.86 ERA (20 ER, 63.0 IP) and 78 strikeouts against 31 walks while holding opponents to a .160 (34-for-212) opponents average in 67 relief appearances.

• Recorded 78 strikeouts in 63.0 innings for a ratio of 11.14 strikeouts per 9.0 innings, tied for the 13th-best mark among all NL relievers in 2016.• Went 1-0 with one save, a 0.77 ERA (2 ER, 23.1 IP), 33 strikeouts against 11 walks and a .135 (10-for-74) opponents batting average over the first

two months of the season through May, over his first 25 outings of the year. • Overall on the season he allowed a .160 (34-for-212) opponents average, the second-best mark allowed by any qualifying NL reliever (150

batters faced), behind only Kenley Jansen (.150), and fifth-best among all relievers, behind also Craig Kimbrel (.152), Aroldis Chapman (.158) and Andrew Miller (.160).

• Had one stint in the minors, being optioned on 8/20 to Triple-A El Paso, before being recalled on 9/1 for the remainder of the season.• Worked scoreless ball in 59 of his 67 outings on the year…allowed a combined 13 runs, all earned, in three outings, posting a 1.03 ERA (7 ER,

61.0 IP) in his other 64 outings on the year. • Per Fangraphs.com he posted a WAR of 1.1 on the season, 13th-best among qualifying NL relievers.

THE RULE 5 GUY: Luis Perdomo, who was acquired by the Padres via trade in the 2015 Rule 5 Draft prior to the start of the season, played the entire year in the Major Leagues for San Diego, going 9-10 with a 5.71 ERA (93 ER, 146.2 IP) and 105 strikeouts against 46 walks in 35 games, 20 starts.

• Over his first 16 games, two starts, of the season he went 1-2 with a 10.38 ERA (35 ER, 30.1 IP), allowing a .393 (55-for-140) opponents average, before turning around to go 8-8 with a 4.49 ERA (58 ER, 116.1 IP) and 81 strikeouts against 28 walks over his final 19 games, 18 starts, of the year, allowing a .284 (132-for-464) over that stretch.

• Over his final seven starts of the year from 8/21 through the end of the season he went 4-3 with a 3.64 ERA (19 ER, 47.0 IP) and a .254 (44-for-173) opponents average, highlighted by a complete game effort on 8/28 at Miami, allowing just one run on six hits in that start, the only complete game for the Padres in 2016 and first since 6/20/15 when Tyson Ross did so.

• Overall in his 20 starts on the season, the Padres were 11-9 in those starts…went 8-9 with a 4.85 ERA (63 ER, 117.0 IP) in his 20 starts.

SOLE, SOLE, SOLE: Yangervis Solarte had a career season in 2016, hitting .286 (116-for-405) with 26 doubles, one triple, 15 home runs, 71 RBI and 55 runs scored to go along with an .808 OPS (.341 OBP, .467 SLG) in just 109 games played.

• Missed some time while on the disabled list, first from 4/10-5/21, with a strained right hamstring…also missed some time due to a personal family matter.• From 6/24 through the end of the season, over his final 75 games, he hit .299 (87-for-291) with 19 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 49 RBI and 41 runs

scored to go along with an .823 OPS (.339 OBP, .485 SLG).• He set career-highs on the season in home runs (15), RBI (71), average (.286) and OPS (.808), despite playing in just 109 games after playing in 152

games in 2015.• Against right-handed pitching, the switch-hitter hit .291 (90-for-309) with 12 of his 15 home runs, while hitting .271 (26-for-96) vs. left-handers. • Enjoyed his best month of the season in July when he hit .308 (28-for-96) with eight doubles, six homers, 17 RBI and 14 runs scored in 22 games…also

WHAT A STREAK: On 9/16 at Colorado the Padres dropped a ninth-inning lead to the Rockies, the club’s first loss of the season when leading after eight innings and their first loss when leading after eight since July 2014.

• Prior to that game the Padres had won each of their previous 143 games when leading after eight innings, which at the time was the longest active streak in the Majors and the second longest such streak in team history…the Padres had a streak of 181-straight wins when leading after eight from July 1996 to April 1999 (7/27/96 - 4/27/99) per STATS.

• The Padres 143-game streak was the longest in the Majors since the New York Yankees had a 160-game win streak when leading after eight snapped earlier in 2016 (June 2014 - June 2016).

THE LONG BALL: The Padres in 2016 hit a franchise-best 177 home runs, passing the previous club record of 172 home runs by the 1970 Padres.• At home in 2016 the Padres hit 83 home runs, a team record for most home runs hit in a season at Petco Park, passing the 75 home runs hit at home by

the 2006 club (Petco Park opened in 2004).• The Padres had just two seasons at Qualcomm (1969-2003) of hitting 83-or-more home runs, including a team home-record of 87 in 1992 and 1993.• The Padres had 21 different players hit a home run in 2016, two shy of the team record of 23 different players from 2008 and 2013.• Overall on the season there were 176 home runs total hit at Petco Park, with 83 by the Padres and 93 by opponents, the most ever in Petco Park history

(previous 167 in 2006) and second-most ever in San Diego all-time behind 178 home runs at Qualcomm in 2001, per STATS.• The club had a streak of hitting a home run in 25-straight games in 2016 from 6/28 - 7/27, the longest streak in franchise history and longest in

the Majors since 2002 when the Texas Rangers homered in a Major League-record 27-straight games.

THE MAURER POWER: Brandon Maurer set career highs in several categories in 2016, including games pitched (71), saves (13) and strikeouts (72).• He began the year by going 0-2 with a 6.97 ERA (24 ER, 31.0 IP) and 39 strikeouts against 18 walks with a .258 (32-for-124) opponents average in his first

32 games from 4/5 through 6/13, before finishing the year by going 0-3 with 13 saves in 15 chances, a 2.56 ERA (11 ER, 38.2 IP), 33 strikeouts against just five walks and a .221 (33-for-149) opponents average over his final 39 games from 6/15 through the end of the season.

• Enjoyed his best month of the season in July when he went 4-for-4 in save chances with a 0.73 ERA (1 ER, 12.1 IP) to go along with 11 strikeouts against just one walk and five hits allowed.

• Overall on the season he held hitters to a .238 (65-for-273) average.

A YEAR OF OPPORTUNITY: Several other Padres players made the most of their opportunities in 2016, including the following players:• Alex Dickerson, after making his Major League debut in 2015, set career-highs in every category, hitting .257 (65-for-253) with 16 doubles, two
