olympic Golf iS BackRio de Janeiro, Brazil
Golf enthusiasts the world over are rejoicing.
After a 112-year absence, golf is set to make
its triumphant return to the Olympics.
This summer, countries from
around the world will send their best
golfers to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in an
attempt to win Olympic gold for their
homelands. For avid golf fans, it’s a
green dream come true; a chance
to watch their favorite golfers vie for
international glory.
The laST Time Golf WaS
in The olympicS
112 years ago, the Glen Echo
Country Club of St. Louis, Missouri
hosted the Summer Olympics, and
Canadian George Lyon took home
the gold medal in the Men’s Individual
Golf Tournament.
The year was 1904.
It was the year the United States
began working on the Panama Canal;
the year New Yorkers witnessed
the opening of the NYC subway. It
was the era of the Gibson Girl — a
time when golfers still wore Norfolk
jackets and knickerbockers.
A lot has changed since then.
But one thing remains the same-
the Olympics provide an exciting
platform for the best golfers in the
world to gather and compete for
national glory.
aBouT The couRSe
The Olympic golf course,
designed by renowned course
architect Gil Hanse and built on the
Reserva de Marapendi in Brazil, is
an 18-hole, links-style course that
will accommodate roughly 15,000
spectators.
After the Olympics, it will
become the area’s first public
course- a place where locals will
gather to learn, and learn to love,
the game of golf. Local authorities
believe this new course will be
instrumental in bringing the game of
golf not only to the people of Brazil,
but to all of South America.
Some were nervous about
whether or not the course would be
completed in time for the Olympics
at all. Design and implementation,
which was projected to take between
12 – 13 months, ended up taking two
and a half years. On November 22nd,
2015, fears were put to rest when
the 970,000-square-meter course
was unveiled for the first time.
The grounds eagerly await their
Olympic debut, and thanks to a joint
commitment to environmentalism and
community involvement, the Reserva
de Marapendi stands to become a
Brazilian landmark, enjoyed by the
local population for years to come.
Who makeS The cuT?
Olympic golf qualification works
like this: each country sends its top
two golfers to the Olympic Games.
However, a country can send up to
four golfers if all four are ranked in
the top 15 worldwide. On the cut-
off date, July 11th, the 60 golfers
who meet these requirements will
automatically book their tickets to

not only to the people of Brazil, but to all of
South America.
As it stands, three US women
currently qualify: Lexi Thompson,
Stacy Lewis and Cristie Kerr — with
Brittany Lincicome slated as their
reserve.
On the men’s side, the top 4 spots
are currently being held by Jordan
Spieth, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler,
and Dustin Johnson. Patrick Reed,
who trails Dustin Johnson by two
spots in the International Rankings, is
the most likely candidate for usurping
a spot from the current foursome.
With plenty of time, and lots of golf
to be played before the deadline,
anything can happen!

olympic Golf fun facTS
This first time golf was played at the Olympics in 1900, the USA took home the gold medal in both the Men’s and Women’s divisions!
Also in 1900, there was a men’s and women’s individual event. The men played two rounds (36 holes), summing the scores. The women only played half a round (9 holes).
The only other time golf featured in the Olympics was 1904. In that year, there were additional non-medal driving and putting competitions held in the dead of night, illuminated by course-side incandescent lamps.
Amateurs in the 1904 Olympics had to prove they were in good golf standing — and were
required to cough up a $5 admission fee.

Golf 101 is a one-day, 90-minute school specifically designed for students who
are new to the sport. The class focuses on the fundamentals of the game, including
golf course layout, equipment and etiquette, so that you can learn with confidence.
Offered most Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00am.
Beginner School (I and II) consists of 90-minute classes that meet once a week
for four consecutive weeks. In addition to small group instruction on the driving
range, golfers also participate in one-on-one video swing analysis with a teaching
professional for an in-depth study of the student’s swing. Graduates of Beginner
School I and II are guaranteed to make consistent, solid contact with the ball and will
gain the confidence necessary to get out on a golf course.
From beginners to low-handicappers,
anyone can benefit from a series of
private lessons. lesson packages are
available in packs of five and ten, and
are ideal for those who prefer individual
instruction and more scheduling
flexibility.
players School meets for 1.5 hours, for 4 consecutive weeks, and is designed for
intermediate golfers who can consistently shoot around or below a 100 looking to
improve their course play. Players work on lag putting and chipping close to the hole,
approach shots to the green and how to hit the fairway with a driver. Consistency on
the golf course is key, and in this class, players develop a solid pre-shot routine in order
to learn how to aim each shot.

impRove youR Game Golfing the high-tech way.
When cutting-edge technology meets practical know-
how, the game-changing possibilities become limitless.
The V1 Golf app utilizes the camera on your mobile
phone to capture the dynamics of your swing.
With the touch of a button, the V1 Golf
app can play your swing side-by-side with
the swings of some of history’s greatest
golfers. Or, you can submit video of your
swing to your favorite instructor for review.
They’ll be able to remotely analyze your
form and technique and provide invaluable
feedback that you can put to immediate use
on the course.
V1 Golf also includes a free personal online locker and
features a full suite of drawing tools, which professionals
can use to pinpoint the areas of your swing that need work.
The V1 golf app also features playback options, game
improvement drills and more.
The V1 Golf system is the latest addition to the Golf
Academy’s comprehensive array of teaching tools —
complementing the following state-of-the-art technologies:
The fliGhT Scope Ball launch moniToR
The Flight Scope Ball Launch Monitor is the world’s
first-ever 3D Doppler Tracking Golf Radar. Students
simply hit, and FlightScope does the rest. While the
ball is in the air, the Doppler tracking radar follows
it with incredible accuracy and, within seconds,
re-creates a digital image of the shot’s flight path
on a laptop screen. Vertical and horizontal launch
angles, velocity, spin, “smash factor,” ball speed
and club head speed are among the quantifiable
shot-characteristics captured by this revolutionary
training tool.
QuinTic Ball Roll SofTWaRe
Sometimes, to arrive at where you’re going, you need to
understand where you’re coming from. Putting is all about
the trajectory a golf ball takes after it’s struck by your putter
face. Quintic Ball Roll software is capable of analyzing
putts at up to 360 frames per second, recognizing markers
on both your putter and the golf ball, during your approach
and through the moment of impact. Each putt is digitally
analyzed before Quintic Ball Roll software generates
hyper-accurate numerical representations of club speed,
ball speed, sidespin (cut or hook), vertical bounce, launch
angle and more. The Golf Club is currently the only facility
in the Tri-state area to offer Quintic Ball Roll Software.
k-veST SySTem
The K-Vest reinvents the phrase hands-on training. With
three wireless sensors, which strap to a student’s back,
waist, and wrist, the K-Vest uses sensitive motion-capture
software to read every element of a golfer’s swing.
These six elements are:
• Alignment at address
• Posture at address
• Hip and shoulder turn at top
• Hip position at top
• Hip movement
• Spine movement

a STRonG female communiTy An Interview with Head Pro, Marjorie Jones, PGA/LPGA
They say you can tell
a lot about a person from
the way they comport
themselves on the golf
course. Accordingly,
professionals have long used the
links as a satellite office: a place to
fraternize with clients, vet employees
and close the big deal.
Most executives agree on
how important a tool golf can be
for career-advancement. (How
important? A recent study showed
that executives who don’t play golf
get paid, on average, 17% less than
their golfing counterparts.) The golf
course can be a great place for
ambitious young professionals to
showcase their decorum, dedication
and inner character.
Long thought to be a boy’s club,
more and more women each year are
recognizing the networking power
of golf, and are using the course as
a place to forge strong
business connections.
At the Golf Club, we’re
proud to help facilitate the
development of strong,
confident female golfers.
Our Women’s School
program is a great way
for novices to get started
on their golf journey. Designed to
help women learn in a comfortable
environment, this program teaches
players the fundamentals of the
game, including grip, stance, posture
and alignment. Confidence is key
when it comes to playing golf, and the
Women’s School helps new golfers
learn the fundamentals, rules, and
etiquette of the game while achieving
a level of play they can feel confident
bringing to the course.
We recently talked with our head
golf pro, PGA and LPGA professional
Marjorie Jones, before she headed
off for the Trophée Simone Thion
de la Chaume golf tournament in
Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France. We
talked about her golf career and,
recognizing how integral a part of
business golfing can be, we spoke
about her ongoing quest to bring the
sport of golf to young, professional
women in the area.
It’s been estimated that 90% of Fortune 500 CEOs play golf. Most of these executives believe that golf is an important business development tool. Would you agree that golf is a great way for professionals to advance and enrich their careers?
It is a known fact that deals are
made not only in the boardroom but
on the golf course. Golf provides an
opportunity to spend time with and
learn about co-workers, managers
and/or clients. Do they have integrity,
how is their temperament, is this a
person you want as a client, partner
or manager?

Knowing how useful golf can be when it comes to making professional connections, how important do you think it is for young girls to try their hand at golfing?
I believe all children should be
involved in sport. It provides discipline
and teaches them how to get along
with others while getting exercise and
having fun.
Golf is a great game for both boys
and girls to learn. It builds character.
Golf is a social game- learning

If you could play a round with any golfer, past or present, who would it be? And why?
Babe Zaharias – one of the
greatest female athletes ever. Two-
time Olympic gold medalist in track
and field, All-American basketball
player, expert diver — and one of the
greatest woman golfers of all time.
I would love to see how she
prepared, and then witness her
execution. While walking to our shots,
I’d love to ask her: What drove her to
become a winner? What is the most
important thing to know about the
golf swing?
The Olympics are coming up, and golf is back! Which countries do you think will be taking home Olympic gold?
I believe either the Korean or US
Women will take the Gold and on the
Men’s side, either Australia or the US.
But it’s the Olympics — athletes dig
deep and the most unlikely things
happen. Should be fun to watch!

Staying low & long Through impact
by David Byrne, UK PGA Teaching Professional
Most amateurs stand up through impact and as a result lose their spine angle through the hitting
zone. A good tip to help avoid this is to keep your arms low and long through impact. Keep your eyes
down and head behind the ball as you strike, allowing your body rotation to finish your swing with
good arm extension.

Developing a pre-shot Routine
by David Buth, PGA Teaching Professional
The purpose of a pre-shot
routine is to correctly align
your body with the target and
to rehearse a specific “swing
thought” prior to hitting an actual
shot. The pre-shot routine will
help you relax and play up to your true potential. If
you don’t have a pre-shot routine, develop one by
following these four steps:
STep 1: Position yourself behind the ball on the
target line. Choose an intermediate target in front
of the ball and establish grip on the golf club.
STep 2: Position the clubface behind the ball with
the clubface square to the target line.
STep 3: Position your feet, hips and shoulders
parallel left of the target line.
STep 4: Rehearse a specific swing thought
through ONE slow practice swing, void of any
tension.
During practice, the pre-shot should be used about
every 5th shot. This will help your game, especially
during “pressure” situations — when it really counts!
Tips to Get Started & improve your Golf Game
by Steve Bourbon, PGA Senior Teaching Professional
Take regular instruction from an
experienced instructor. Find someone
who communicates well, has been trained
to teach, and can play golf at a high level.
Mastering the fundamentals of golf is
a lifelong process. Supervised, intelligent
instruction can help you avoid the pitfalls of learning the game
on your own and creating bad habits, which can take a lifetime
to break.
crawl before you walk. For golf, that process means learning
to putt first, and then learning to chip and pitch, which will help
new golfers transition to a full swing more smoothly. You only
really need 3 clubs to start: a putter, a wedge, and a 7 or 8 iron.
Start with a par 3 course. The short game (100 yds. and in)
makes up 60% of the game, and it’s where most people lose or
gain the majority of their strokes.
Develop a proper warm-up routine. Consistently arrive an
hour before tee-off. Use this time to stretch and practice each
aspect of the game, focusing on the areas you typically struggle
with.
focus on accuracy over distance. Distance will come as
proficiency in proper technique improves. Practice swinging
at about 80%, striving for precision. Remember: If you have to
swing hard to get the ball to the target, you’re probably using
the wrong club.

junior golf:
iT’S neveR Too eaRly To STaRT It’s never too early to start your golfing career. Need proof? Look no further than Lucy Li and Christian Carpenter — two precocious young golfers who achieved amazing feats at early ages.
Lucy qualified for the US Women’s
Open when she was only 11 years
old. In 2014, she won the Masters
Drive, Chip and Putt competition in
her age group. And Christian? He’s
the youngest male golfer to have ever
shot a hole-in-one. When he was 4
years, 195 days old, he recorded an
ace at the Mountain View Golf Club
in Hickory, North Carolina.
At the Golf Club, we know that
when prodigious young talent is
cultivated in the right environment,
with a team of supportive,
experienced teaching professionals,
golf superstars can be forged.
Our Junior Golf Programs are
designed to create this supportive
environment so that junior golfers of
all ages can develop untapped talent
and build enthusiasm for the game.
Tots Golf, an introductory program
for children ages 4-5, teaches the
fundamentals of the game while
helping develop golf skills, knowledge
and etiquette in a safe and nurturing
environment. If your child is older
and more experienced, we offer an
Elite Junior Program. Open to more
advanced players, ages 10-18, this
program is designed for young gofers
interested in taking their game to
the next level, and to help more
established junior golfers make their
high school or college golf teams.
At every level, we are dedicated to
providing the highest quality golf
instruction, coaching, and support for
each student.
Do you know a young golfer with
a passion for the sport? Swing by the
Golf Club and check out our wide
range of Junior Golf Programs.

by Tim Townsend, PGA Teaching Professional
Public golf in New York poses certain challenges. The courses
in the outer boroughs are packed over the weekend. A good
alternative to the NYC logjam is the Patriot
Hills Golf Club in Stony Point, NY. Only a
45-minute drive from Manhattan, Patriot Hills is
a wonderful golf course with fantastic views. The
conditions are consistently terrific and the round
should only take about 4 hours. The course
is challenging but fair, with many elevated tee
boxes. Patriot Hills is an interesting course, whose mix of short
and long holes demand attention and focus. Those who like to
warm up before their round will enjoy Patriot Hill’s great practice
facilities. Carts are included in the price as this is not a walking
course. (Way too many hills; too much distance between holes.)
All in all, Patriot Hills is one of the best public courses in the area.
But make sure you finish your round before dark, as this local
club was voted most haunted spot in New York!

I frequently get asked for recommendations on where beginner
golfers can comfortably play in a relaxed, non-
stressful setting at a quality facility. A short distance
from NYC by train or car is a course that fits the bill
- the Harbor Links Executive Golf Course. Not only
is it good for beginners, but it is also challenging
enough for experienced golfers looking to work
on their short game. This 9-hole course is a mix
of short par 4s and par 3s, measuring 1,460-1,668 yards. The
conditions are excellent and it is generally a walking course,

which I believe enhances the golfing experience. Topping it off,
the greens fees are less than $30.
SkyWay Golf couRSe aT lincoln paRk WeST huDSon counTy, nJ
by David Buth, PGA Teaching Professional
Skyway Golf Course is New Jersey’s newest public course,
and the only public facility in Hudson County. This nine-hole
course opened for play in June of 2015 and is in excellent
condition for being so new. The greens are very large, some
with severe, undulating slopes. The condition of the greens are
more reminiscent of what you’d find at a private country club-
they’re that good. There are some reminders, though, that you’re
playing on a public course — the unrepaired ball
marks become somewhat of a problem late in the
day. High mounds framing each fairway create
difficulty if your shot is off line, making it hard
to find your ball in the deep fescue rough. The
mounding also creates some blind shots during
your play of the course. The routing and layout of
the course is exceptional, with several holes offering true risk /
reward scenarios. The backdrop and scenery is rather dramatic,
with great views of the Freedom Tower and historic Jersey City,
including the Pulaski Skyway and Hackensack River. This is a
perfect course to carry your bag and walk.

The Golf Club was lucky enough to host Hawaiian golf phenom michelle Wie, who showcased
her skills on the driving range.
It was another successful year of Girls night out at the Golf Club. Proving there’s no better place
to socialize while sharpening your swing!
US Open winner and friend of the Golf Club Webb Simpson stopped by to impart some
golf wisdom on our young golfers.
