Mystic Irish Parade Foundation 9.
In special commemoration of the 13th year, the Mystic Irish Parade Foundation ishonored to have Father Tom Hoar,President of the St. Edmund’s Retreat atEnders Island off of Masons Island inMystic, serve as the Grand Marshal of forthe 2016 Mystic Irish Parade! This honoris bestowed to an exceptional member ofEastern Connecticut who dedicates time, energy and effort into giving back to theirlocal community each day.
Father Tom Hoar, formally announced asthe Grand Marshal of the Mystic IrishParade on January 29th, 2016, has residedin the beautiful town of Mystic since 1993.He grew up in South Boston in Quincy inan Irish Catholic ghetto where a peninsulaof families of Irish descent had establishedhomes after the war. Growing up in an IrishCatholic family, religion was an integralpart of his life and even as a child, he feltvery connected to the church.
He journeyed to St. Michael’s College inVermont where he originally pursued a pre-medicine major with the goal of one daybecoming a doctor. During his time there,he was impressed with the Edmundites atSt. Michael’s and Father Ray Doherty, whowas the college chaplain. He soon realizedthat God had a different plan as to how hewould offer hope and healing and insteadof thru medicine, it would be thru ministry.
After entering the Society of St. Edmundin June of 1971, he continued to professhis religious vows on August 22nd of 1972.He currently holds a Bachelor of Artsdegree from St. Michael’s College, aMasters of Divinity from the University ofSt. Michael’s College in Toronto, a Masterof Arts degree in Religion and ReligiousEducation from Fordham University inBronx, NY, a PhD in Higher EducationAdministration from Michigan StateUniversity, and lastly, an MBA & PhD inCulture & Technology and ReligiousBroadcasting from Salve Regina inNewport, RI.
In 1991, Father Tom was a part of a taskforce responsible for evaluating Ender’sIsland and the vitality of St. Edmund’sRetreat. He took a strong position on howthe island and the ministry could berevived. In 1993, he took on the challengeas the Retreat Director. Over the years, heserved also as the Director ofDevelopment, Director of Enders Islandand since 2003, has been the President ofSt. Edmund’s Retreat.
When asked what his favorite part of beingdedicated to the island was, he said, “Younever know what will happen, becauseevery day is different, but the fundamentalmessage of hope and healing stays thesame. God gives us gifts and challenge usto use those gifts to help people discoverthe wonder of his love. In sharing amessage of hope, you can change theworld. By helping one person, you canchange the world.”
Father Tom is most proud of his staff, whohe describes as “kind and compassionate”as well the people that the island hastransformed who came to the retreatsuffering from addiction, grief, depressionand more. “God walks in and thru all ofus. This is an active Catholic retreat andthe fellowship and community helped itblossom. People come to the island andhear the message of hope.”
He has traveled the world, but because ofhis love for the country, has been to Ireland13 times and hopes to visit again. Hisfavorite part is the village of Spiddal onthe shore of Galway Bay in the Connemararegion. He also took lessons at the MysticValley Hunt Club and fulfilled his dreamof becoming not only an avid horsebackrider, but riding on the beaches in SligoCounty.
In addition to serving as the Chaplain ofthe Naval Submarine Base in Groton, CT,he also established both the St. Michael’sInstitute of Sacred Art and the St.
