IN THE LAUREL HIGHLANDSTHINGS To Do

A&S Indoor Pistol Range has packages available for birthdays, bachelor/bachelorette parties, office events and any group that just wants to have a blast! Whatever the reason, we can plan a group shooting event for you. Don’t own a firearm? No problem. We have rental guns of various calibers for first time or experienced shooters. You tell us your budget and we will set up everything you need before you arrive. A lot of new shooters? We can arrange to have instructors on hand for the group. There is a sizeable viewing area for everyone in your group to watch the action and to rotate in and out of the Range.

Discover an engineering wonder of the 19th Century that played a critical role in opening the interior of the United States to trade and settlement. From 1834 to 1854, this inclined plane railroad carried canal boats over the Allegheny Mountains. At the Visitor Center, learn about the people who built the Allegheny Portage Railroad, and the merchants, passengers, soldiers and slaves who used ‘the portage.’ Visit an inn that served passengers of the day. At a separate site, take a walk through America’s first railroad tunnel, Staple Bend, built in 1833. Concerts, hikes, van tours and special programming are held throughout the summer and fall months. Check the website for details.

Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is one of five national parks in the Laurel Highlands region.

Our state-of-the-art museum is a must-see for anyone interested in history, culture, art, the Holy Land, and early Christianity. Changing exhibits bring something new each year! Our permanent collection of more than 750 items includes colorful antique icons from Russia and the Eastern Mediterranean, inlaid wood furniture from Damascus, a hand-embroidered dress from Bethlehem, and an original 1617 King James Bible. Bring your group for the day and enjoy a delicious meal in our dining room overlooking meadows and woods! The museum is part of a full-service Conference Center, offering lodging and meeting rooms, a banquet hall, athletic fields, and a wooded Ropes Course for team-building activities.

ArtWorks Connellsville is an art gallery featuring over 100 local and regional artists located in Downtown Connellsville. The gallery is located next door to the Connellsville Canteen. While shopping for a unique gift you will find: stained glass windows and sun catchers, paintings, photography, jewelry, woodworking, pottery, soaps, cards and so much more. Seasonal art classes, art demonstrations, and author events are offered throughout the year. There are also books and videos about the area many by local authors available for purchase.

The Connellsville Area Historical Society maintains several locations. The first is the Crawford Cabin site at 7th Street and the Youghiogheny River next to the Great Allegheny Passage. The cabin is a reproduction of the home of local pioneer, Colonel William Crawford, originally built in 1767 near to the Braddock’s Crossing site in 1755. The Society owns the historic Gibson House at 217 Patterson Avenue. It is a restored iron master’s home dating from 1870 and houses several collections of historic documents including the original Connell papers of the city founder, Zachariah Connell, and a fine collection of early Connellsville photographs. The Gibson House is open on Wednesday by appointment only. Our office at the Carnegie Library is available for research.

The Connellsville Canteen was built to resemble the city’s original B&O Train Station. The center commemorates the men and women who served the country during World War II both stateside as well as overseas. Tour the museum and learn about the stories of those who served. Then visit Harry Clark’s Indian Creek Valley scratch-built 22’ x 50’ HO Scale Model Railroad which is displayed in a room that also showcases additional railroad memorabilia. Rotating exhibitions featuring thematic displays are shown in the main room. A 50 seat lunch/dinner theater is available to compliment your visit. Catering is available with advanced notice or light refreshments and coffee are available at the Canteen.

Flight 93 Memorial Chapel is a refurbished parish church dedicated to the honor and glory of God and to the Heroes of Flight 93, the innocents who perished on September 11, 2001. The non-denominational Chapel is recognized as the first permanent memorial to Flight 93 and was dedicated on September 11, 2002. The Meditation Room displays portraits and biographies of the Forty Heroes. A 31,000 pound marble obelisk Flight 93 Monument is located in the Heroes Garden, presented by United Airlines in honor of their Flight crew. Personal mementos have been offered to the Chapel by family members. Pay your respects and reflect here at the Chapel when visiting the Flight 93 National Memorial site. A $5.00 per person donation is appreciated to carry on this mission.

On September 11, 2001, the United States came under attack when three commercial airlines were hijacked and used to strike the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. A fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a grassy field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Because of the actions of the 40 passengers and crew aboard Flight 93, the terrorists’ planned attacked on the nation’s capital was thwarted. The Memorial is a tribute to the passengers and crew of Flight 93 and a place to explore this inspiring story. The visit is self-guided with outdoor exhibit panels and cell phone tour.

The NEW Visitor and Learning Center offers exhibits and educational programs. All visitors are encouraged to plan their visit in advance at www.nps.gov/flni.

Fallingwater®, one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most widely acclaimed works, was designed in 1935 for the family of Pittsburgh department store owner Edgar J. Kaufmann. Dramatically cantilevered over a waterfall, the house, perhaps better than any single work exemplifies Wright’s concept of organic architecture: the harmonious union of art and nature. Named one of “50 places of a lifetime” by National Geographic Traveler, the house is open for tours daily except Wednesdays from mid-March through Thanksgiving weekend. Also open Saturdays and Sundays in December and the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The Visitor Center includes a Museum Store and Café, which offers a variety of group dining options. Interactive programs are available for student groups. Groups should allow a minimum of two hours.

In 1953, I.N. and Bernardine Hagan purchased 89 acres in the Laurel Highlands of Western Pennsylvania. After falling in love with Fallingwater®, they commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design a house for them. Kentuck Knob is one of the last homes to be completed by Wright. Designed on a hexagonal module, Kentuck Knob is a one-story Usonian house - a signature design of Wright. Both dramatic and serene, the house is situated just below the crest of a hill and appears almost part of the mountain itself. An open floor plan, cantilevered overhangs and great expanses of glass effortlessly integrate the inside with the outside. Additional opportunities for the visitor include a magnificent view of the Youghiogheny River Gorge, a woodland trail, and sculptures integrated into the landscape by contemporary artists such as Claes Oldenburg, Sir Anthony Caro, Andy Goldsworthy, and many others.

Later, he helped negotiate an end to the War of 1812 and served as Minister to France. Exhibits and programs highlight Gallatin’s life and his remarkable service to the young republic. Hanna’s Town, founded in 1773, holds a special place in American history as site of the first English courts west of the Allegheny Mountains and because it tells the little-known story of the western campaign of the Revolutionary War. In 1775, stalwart citizens drafted and signed the Hanna’s Town Resolves – a strong challenge to British authority prior to the Declaration of Independence. Destroyed by Native Americans and their British allies in 1782, today guided tours of this reconstructed frontier settlement reveal daily life and the struggles, decisions and events in western Pennsylvania during the American Revolution. Costumed guides interpret the reconstructed fort, courthouse/tavern, and jail. By reservation, groups of 20 or more can witness a reenactment of actual court case(s) heard at Hanna’s Town 1773-1786.

Synonymous with the floods of Johnstown is the Johnstown Inclined Plane. Constructed after the first flood on May 31, 1889, the Incline was built to develop the higher grounds residentially. When floodwaters swept through the Conemaugh and Stonycreek valleys on March 17, 1936 and again on July 20, 1977, it was the Incline that carried men, women and children to safety. Today, it serves as the historic focal point of our area. Thousands of national and international travelers have experienced all that the Inclined Plane has to offer. In addition to the panoramic view of the valley below, the Inclined Plane features a restaurant, gift shop and visitor’s center. Experience the history first hand and enjoy the ride at the historic Johnstown Inclined Plane.

Stoneware pots were made in the 19th century in local communities such as New Geneva and Greensboro. It has been the mission of New Geneva Stoneware Co. to carry on the tradition of quality started by our ancestors. We have added new products; however, we are best known because, just like the potters of long ago….WE MAKE POTTERY AND PUT YOUR NAME ON IT!

The first floor houses the production area where our all of our pottery products are produced and decorated onsite by our artisans.

The top floor of our 1903 building houses our gift shop stocked with pottery, candles, florals, gifts, primitives and much more! Our gift shop was built to reflect the McClellandtown of long ago.

The Old General Store & Country Pie Shoppe is conveniently located 1 mile from the PA Turnpike Exit #91 at Donegal. Our homestyle bakery shares an assortment of baked goodies prepared the ‘way grandma used to!’ The Old General Store is a treasure trove of items. Be sure to include this fun stop. Stroll in and take a step back in time. We specialize in old time goods, nostalgic candy, delightful country decor, games, and gift items that you just won’t see anywhere else!

Also, consider a visit to our second spacious location of The Old General Store, conveniently located in Countryside Shopping Plaza just off of Route 119 in Mt. Pleasant, not far from the Greendance Winery!

West Overton Village & Museums, the birthplace of Henry Clay Frick, is a pre-Civil War industrial village. West Overton Village is located in the quiet little town of Scottdale. Between 1803 and 1880, West Overton evolved from an isolated farming enclave into a thriving rural industrial village largely through the business acumen of Abraham Overholt. Overholt oversaw village enterprises of farming, livestock husbandry, weaving, coopering, coking coal, and the distilling of storied Monongahela Rye Whiskey. West Overton Village, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, exists today as an intact collection of over a dozen structures dating to the early to mid-1800s including the 1838 Overholt Homestead and several original outbuildings.

Flexibility is what sets us apart. Whether your group is looking to do some team-building or just get away for some old fashioned fun, we can customize a trip that is right for you. Rafting is available on the Middle or Lower Youghiogheny Rivers. Take the traditional guide escorted tour in 4 to 6 person rafts or upgrade to a captained raft or inflatable kayak option. The 7-mile section called the “Lower Yough” is home to the most challenging class III+ waters, which run through Ohiopyle State Park, paralleling the Great Allegheny Passage.

Scenic by-ways, forests and trails With five national parks and eight state parks, public lands in the Laurel Highlands encompass nearly 120,000 acres, like Laurel Mountain, popular for its mountain bike trails, or the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, known for its spectacular vistas. The 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail is beloved by hikers and bikers and stretches through the Laurel Highlands to Washington, D.C.
