Eager to compete with the Erie Canal, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania built its Main Line of Public Works, stretching from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. The Allegheny Mountain proved to be a barrier to the canal section of the Main Line. This barrier was solved by building one of the most unique railroads in American history...and the first to conquer the Alleghenies. At the park’s Visitor Center, exhibits and the film share the personal and technical sides of the Portage Railroad. Atop the Inclined Plane #6 of the railroad, guests can visit a replica of the Engine House that once stood there. Visitors can observe the restored Lemon House Tavern, and experience a piece of 1840’s American and Pennsylvanian history. A walk through the woods along railroad’s trace is exhilarating.

Don’t miss our new Antiochian Heritage Museum exhibit! Join us for “Women with Icons,” a straightforward yet sensitive collection of black and white photo portraits depicting everyday women for whom images of their patron saints remain a source of quiet strength. Museum tours also feature selections from our permanent collection, including antique icons, religious artifacts, and an original 1617 King James Bible. Luncheon museum tours available. Bring your group for the day and enjoy a delicious meal in our dining room overlooking the beautiful Laurel Highlands. Groups looking for a team-building activity will find it here on our Ropes Course! Our trained adventure facilitators will guide your group through low and high element challenges in an environment which promotes safety and fun. Overnight lodging available.

Enjoy ‘history with a smile’ as you are guided through this authentically-restored 1799 stagecoach stop complex nestled at the foot of the mountains in the Laurel Highlands. Along the historic Lincoln Highway, Compass Inn served as a popular Inn for stagecoach travelers during the first half of the 19th century. The tour includes the original Inn and four reconstructed out buildings: the cookhouse features a beehive oven, the blacksmith shop has a working forge, the carpenter shop with a hand cranked fly-wheel for lathe operation and the barn that houses an 1880 Studebaker wagon, a restored stagecoach and Conestoga Wagon, complete with a six horse hitch. Visit the Compass Inn Museum and step back in time to experience life as our forefathers lived it!

Flight 93 Memorial Chapel is a refurbished parish church dedicated to the honor and glory of God and to the Heroes of Flight 93 and the innocents who perished that day. The non-denominational chapel is recognized as the first permanent memorial to Flight 93 and was dedicated on September 11, 2002. The Meditation Room displays portraits and biographies of the Forty Heroes. A 31,000-pound marble obelisk Flight 93 Crew Monument is located in the Heroes Garden. Programs are available for school and youth groups, church groups and tour groups. When visiting Flight 93 National Memorial, be sure to include the Chapel as part of your journey. Call for directions and to schedule your group. $5 pp includes tour and a souvenir magazine commemorating Flight 93 and the Chapel.

United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a grassy field near rural Shanksville, shattering the quiet of the Pennsylvania countryside. The community, like countless others across the nation, was shaken by the crash and the unimaginable violence and destruction al-Qaeda terrorists brought to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. But as the day unfolded, this common field revealed a compelling story of courage and hope. Flight 93 National Memorial is a tribute to the passengers and crew of Flight 93 and is a place to explore this inspiring story. Journey to a simple field that is their final resting place and a lasting testament to the extraordinary courage of forty ordinary people. Discover a story of courage, action, and honor. To start planning your visit and schedule your group reservation, please visit the memorial’s website.

Discover Fort Ligonier and journey back to the 18th century and the time of the French and Indian War. Explore remarkable museum exhibits such as, ‘The World Ablaze: An Introduction to the Seven Years’ War,’ featuring over 200 original objects from around the world including a rare, original Redcoat Uniform. Don’t miss the spectacular George Washington Pistols and catch a glimpse of his memoirs, “Remarks.” See the impressive collection of fourteen original paintings by such artists as Sir Joshua Reynolds, Allan Ramsay, and Rembrandt Peale in the Art Gallery. Special programs and customized tours are available for student and adult groups. Learn unknown stories of young George Washington, explore the fort through educational programs, or experience a living history weekend or battle reenactment event. Don’t miss our popular 3 day event, the second weekend in October: including outdoor entertainment, food and crafts booths and a community parade!

There, learn of life along the National Road, America’s first federally-built highway and what it was like to travel by stagecoach. The Frank Lloyd Wright Duncan House located in Acme, within an hour of Fallingwater®, is a “must see” on your architectural tour of Wright’s masterpieces in the Laurel Highlands. A Polymath Park tour offers three informative tours in one stop – Wright’s Duncan House and two homes designed by Wright apprentice Peter Berndtson. Enjoy natural wooded surroundings while listening to the fascinating story of how the Duncan House was saved by Wright conservationists and relocated from Illinois to this picturesque Pennsylvania site. Delight your group with a delicious farm-to-table style meal at Tree Tops Restaurant as a complement to your tour, or as a stand-alone meal stop. Catered lake-side picnics, welcome receptions, themed dinners and entertainment are available. Polymath Park welcomes motorcoaches and private groups.

Fallingwater®, one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most widely-acclaimed works, was designed in 1935 for the family of Pittsburgh department store owner Edgar J. Kaufmann. Dramatically cantilevered over a waterfall, the house, perhaps better than any single work exemplifies Wright’s concept of organic architecture: the harmonious union of art and nature. Named one of “50 places of a lifetime” by National Geographic Traveler, the house is open for tours daily except Wednesdays from mid-March through Thanksgiving weekend. Also open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in December and the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The Visitor Center includes a Museum Store and Café, which offers a variety of group dining options. Interactive programs are available for student groups. Groups should allow a minimum of two hours.

High atop a bluff, just a few miles southwest of Fallingwater® and overlooking the Youghiogheny River Gorge stands another Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece, the House on Kentuck Knob. The house occupies a special place by virtue of beauty and isolation of its mountain site, the vitality of its plan, and the quality of its materials and construction. A great believer in the beauty of natural materials, Mr. Wright combined the native fieldstone so abundant throughout the property with tidewater red cypress to create a chorus of color and texture that replicates the surrounding landscape.

Friendship Hill preserves the country estate of Albert Gallatin, a Swiss immigrant who served his adopted country in public and private life for nearly seven decades. Gallatin made significant contributions to our young republic in the fields of finance, politics, diplomacy and scholarship. He is best known for serving as Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison (1801-1813).Nine rooms on two floors help interpret Gallatin’s life and accomplishments. The gazebo offers wonderful views of the Monongahela River. The Visitor Center has a four-minute video and museum shop.

Hanna’s Town, founded in 1773, holds a special place in American history as site of the first English courts west of the Allegheny Mountains and because it tells the little-known story of the western campaign of the Revolutionary War. In 1775, stalwart citizens drafted and signed the Hanna’s Town Resolves – a strong challenge to British authority prior to the Declaration of Independence. Destroyed by Native Americans and their British allies in 1782, today, guided tours of this reconstructed frontier settlement reveal daily life and the struggles, decisions and events in western Pennsylvania during the American Revolution. Costumed guides interpret the reconstructed fort, courthouse/tavern, and jail. By reservation, groups of 20 or more can witness a reenactment of actual court case(s) heard at Hanna’s Town 1773-1786.

Idlewild and SoakZone - the perfect place for Group FUN! We make it easy to plan an outing because group events are what we do best. We have a reputation of providing great FUN and great VALUE. With “two parks in one” you get all the thrills of an amusement park with exciting rides, unique attractions and live entertainment. Plus, splashing good times at the SoakZone waterpark, featuring Wowabunga family wave pool, Float Away Bay lazy river, over 20 waterslides and numerous water adventure areas! Variety of special events days: Outdoor Classroom, Italian Day Festa, Oktoberfest, HallowBoo and more! Student Friendly, free motorcoach parking, catering available.

Discover the shocking story of the 1889 Johnstown flood, in which 2,209 people died and a prospering city was destroyed. Exhibits, artifacts and an Academy Award®-winning documentary tell the amazing story of the disaster, including the town’s incredible recovery. An original “Oklahoma House,” an early example of prefabricated housing used to shelter survivors, is included. Other exhibits focus on the role of Clara Barton and the American Red Cross in the recovery effort, depictions of the flood in popular culture, and more. Nearby is the beautifully-lighted Stone Bridge, a key site in the disaster, as well as the Inclined Plane. Educational materials that meet PA state standards available free at www.jaha.org. Receptive services for Johnstown-area attractions available; other services include step-on guides, catered meals and more.

Johnstown Flood National Memorial shares the story of one of the worst disasters in American history...a disaster which claimed the lives of 2,209 people. At the Visitor Center, guests can view a film that chillingly recreates the events of May 31, 1889 and allows the visitor to make an emotional connection with the victims and survivors. Visitors can also walk atop the ruins of the South Fork Dam, where the flood started, and can walk down a trail into the lakebed of Lake Conemaugh, at the time one of the largest human-made lakes in the United States. Visitors can also observe the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club (seasonally and staff-permitting) and view the building once visited by Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick and Andrew Mellon.

Synonymous with the floods of Johnstown is the Johnstown Inclined Plane. Constructed after the first flood on May 31, 1889, the Incline was built to develop the higher grounds residentially. When floodwaters swept through the Conemaugh and Stonycreek valleys on March 17, 1936 and again on July 20, 1977, it was the Incline that carried men, women, and children to safety. Today, it serves as the historic focal point of our area. Thousands of national and international travelers have experienced all that the Inclined Plane has to offer. In addition to its panoramic view of the valleys, the Inclined Plane features a restaurant, ice cream shoppe, visitor’s center and gift shop. Experience the history first-hand and enjoy the ride at the Johnstown Inclined Plane!

The Mt. Pleasant Glass Museum celebrates three local glass companies that created blown and cut crystal glassware in Mt. Pleasant for over a century: Bryce Brothers, Lenox Crystal, and L.E. Smith. Among our treasures are the first glass headlight lenses made for the Ford Model T car and glassware used in the White House from the 1920s to today. Our docents are people who gathered glass, blew it into shape, and sold it to the world. So, we have it all, including the tools and the union records. In addition to our permanent display and growing library, we offer changing exhibits, guided tours and hands-on glass etching and demonstrations with well-known craftsman Peter O’Rourke, master engraver. We are the only glass Museum in the Laurel Highlands.

The successful Quecreek Mine rescue took place in Somerset, PA, over three days in July of 2002. The site of the rescue is just fifteen miles from the somber field where United Flight 93 crashed on September 11, 2001. The miraculous rescue of all nine trapped miners was an important milestone in our country’s emerging from the post 9-11 trauma and encouraged healing. When visiting the rescue site, you will be given a firsthand account of the rescue, visit the site and experience the actual artifacts of the rescue, including the infamous “yellow rescue capsule.” We are student friendly. Education on coal mining and an explanation of the rescue can be given in a variety of levels. Come and experience how faith, skill, cooperation, grit, determination and love of neighbor & country can overcome the odds and prove that miracles really do happen.

West Overton Village & Museums, the birthplace of Henry Clay Frick, is a pre-Civil War industrial village. Between 1803 and 1880, West Overton evolved from an isolated farming enclave into a thriving rural industrial village largely through the business acumen of Abraham Overholt. Overholt oversaw village enterprises of farming, livestock husbandry, weaving, coopering, coking coal, and the distilling of storied Monongahela Rye Whiskey. West Overton Village, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, exists today as an intact collection of over a dozen structures dating to the early to mid-1800s including the 1838 Overholt Homestead and several original outbuildings.
