GAME 19 » vs CLEMSON » FEB. 18, 2021

The RivalryThe Tar Heels and Tigers are

meeting for the 87th time in a rivalry that dates back to the 1975-76 season. UNC leads 58-28 after winning the last three in a row, eight of the past nine and 25 of the last 27.

• Last season, UNC won 86-72 in Chapel Hill on Feb. 2, 2020. Janelle Bailey was one of two Tar Heels to pass 20 points, finishing with 23. (Then-senior Taylor Koenen was the leading scorer for UNC, finishing with 26.)

• In the last matchup in Clemson, UNC won 70-64 on Feb. 10, 2019. Bailey shared the scoring lead in that one with 15 points. The Tar Heels started slowly, hitting just one of their first 11 shots as Clemson got out to a 14-3 lead, but stormed back to improve to 6-5 in ACC play.

• Stephanie Watts had 12 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and two steals in that 2019 game. With three three-pointers, she moved into third place on UNC’s career three-pointers list with a total of 236. She now ranks second on the list with a total of 262 as a Tar Heel.

Scouting ClemsonClemson is 10-9 overall and 5-9 in ACC play coming off a 72-65

homecourt loss to Wake Forest on Sunday. The Tigers made a late run, outscoring Wake 23-8 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t quite catch up.

Freshman Gabby Elliott led three Tigers in double figures with 18 points. Delicia Washington was the team’s top rebounder with six.

• Washington averages 15.6 points per game this season, seventh in the ACC. Elliott is second on the team and 16th in the league with 14.2 ppg.

• As a team, Clemson averages 72.79 points per game and is allowing an average of 68.63 for a scoring margin of +4.16. Like the Tar Heels, the Tigers are a strong rebounding team, averaging 43.16 boards per game,

fourth in the ACC. They also rank fourth in the conference in rebounding margin (+7.32), just below UNC’s third-place +8.17.

• Clemson is seeking to snap a streak of three losses. The team’s last win was on Jan. 31 at Wake Forest (69-66).

Trending• Janelle Bailey has scored

in double figures in 17 of 18 games this year, including every ACC game.

• After breaking out of a six-game shooting slump that included an 0-for-20 streak from three-point range, Stephanie Watts has scored in double

figures in each of the past seven games. • UNC’s last two games have produced the Tar Heels’ highest free throw

percentages of the season, 86.7 (13-15) vs NC State and 83.9 (26-31) vs Pitt. That’s 84.7 percent over the past two games, compared with 70.7 for the season and 69.8 in ACC play.

• Bailey is 16-18 (88.9 percent) from the foul line over the past two games. For the season she’s shooting 75.0 percent. Watts is 13-14 (92.8) over the past two games, 87.0 for the year.

• The win at Pitt was UNC’s second 80-point game in ACC play, with the other a 92-68 homecourt win vs Syracuse in December.

• Stephanie Watts set and reset season highs for minutes in the last two games, playing 38 vs. NC State then all 40 at Pitt.

• The win at Pitt marked just the third game this season in which Petra Holešínská has not hit a three.

• The win at Pitt on Thursday was UNC’s first road win of the year. The Tar Heels are 1-5 away from Chapel Hill in 2020-21.

• The victory at Pitt marked just the second time this year that UNC has won when shooting below 40 percent. (The other was vs. Wake Forest at home in overtime on Dec. 20.)

Courtney BanghartHead Coach • Second Season at UNC

The 2020-21 season is the second at UNC for head coach Courtney Banghart. She was announced on April 30, 2019 as UNC’s head coach, the first new face in

the position since 1986. She came to Chapel Hill after 12 years as the head coach at Princeton, where her teams won seven Ivy League crowns and made eight NCAA Tour-nament appearances. (Before her arrival, Princeton hadn’t reached the tournament even once.)

A New Hampshire native, Banghart was a three-year starter at Dartmouth, where she twice earned All-Ivy honors. She still holds the Ivy League record for career three-pointers (273) and as a senior competed in the three-point shooting contest at Butler’s

Hinkle Fieldhouse during the men’s Final Four in Indianapolis. More on Banghart:• She was the 2015 Naismith National Coach of the Year and is the only current ACC coach to have won

that honor. • In 2015 she was named to Fortune’s list of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders. Others on the list that year:

Pope Francis, Bill and Melinda Gates, Chief Justice John Roberts Jr., LeBron James, Elon Musk and Taylor Swift.

• She holds a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience and a master’s degree in writing and leadership, both from Dartmouth. Her graduate thesis was on sport leadership.

• She hitchhiked through Alaska after college, after ditching the outdoor leadership course in which she was enrolled.

• Right around the time she got the Princeton job, she and her brother were finalists to appear on “The Amazing Race.”

• A four-time soccer state champion in high school, she planned to play that sport at Dartmouth until a coaching change made her rethink her path and talk the women’s basketball coach into giving her a spot. (She also won two high school state titles in basketball and three in tennis.)

GAME 19 » vs CLEMSON » FEB. 18, 2021

New Season, New NumbersJust one of the Tar Heels – Malu Tshitenge,

– is playing in the same jersey number she wore for UNC last season. In the case of seven of the 11, it’s because they’re new to Carolina uniforms. Three of the four returners are in different numbers for 2020-21.

#0: ALEXANDRA ZELAYA#0: ALEXANDRA ZELAYAThis season is Zelaya’s debut in No. 0

and she took a circuitous path to get there, including pondering whether it’s even a number in the first place. She wore jersey No. 3 through middle and high school but when she committed to UNC, she found out that Kennedy Todd-Williams already had dibs on that jersey. “At first I thought, ‘That kind of sucks,’ but then I realized I’m moving on from high school Ali to college Ali and this is a fresh start – different state, different people, different coaches, different teammates,” Zelaya said. Within the family, her older sister (Adriana) had claimed No. 1 and her younger sister (Avalyn) had No. 5. Within her preferred parameter of odd single digits that weren’t already taken in the Zelaya family, the basketball-eligible choices were, well, nil. “I brought up zero and at first my family didn’t really like it – you think, ‘Is zero even a number?’ It’s just really different. And I want to be different so that kind of highlighted everything I wanted it to be. So I picked zero and it’s really grown on me.”

#1: ALYSSA USTBY#1: ALYSSA USTBYWhen Ustby was a freshman in high school,

she got jersey No. 21 because it was the only one left. She grew to love it and wanted to stick with it, but at UNC it belongs to Malu Tshitenge. So she wanted something close ... 12 is retired (Ivory Latta), 2 is taken (Petra Holešínská), so she picked No. 1. It has extra significance to Ustby because it was recently vacated by Taylor Koenen, a 2020 graduate who, like Ustby, is from Minnesota. “It’s a special number,” Ustby said, “and I’m keeping the Minnesota legacy going.”

#2: PETRA HOLESINSKA#2: PETRA HOLESINSKAHolešínská wore jersey No. 13 at Illinois.

When she came to Chapel Hill as a graduate student she wanted a fresh start and a new number, so went with jersey No. 2.

#3: KENNEDY TODD-WILLIAMS#3: KENNEDY TODD-WILLIAMSTodd-Williams has worn No. 3 since she

started playing basketball, around age 5. She liked that it was also the jersey number of greats Candace Parker and Chris Paul, some of her favorites. The number takes a deeper meaning from signifying the trio of her mother, her sister, Taylor, and herself.

#5: STEPHANIE WATTS#5: STEPHANIE WATTSWatts has worn No. 5 since high school, including the first four years she spent at UNC and last season at Southern California. She initially picked it because her father wore it when he played in college, at Long Island University. “It’s stuck with me,” Watts said. “When I got back here and I had the opportunity to get 5 again I thought, let me just continue it.”

#11: ARIEL YOUNG#11: ARIEL YOUNGAfter transferring to UNC from Michigan in

January of 2020, Young was listed as No. 5. This year, she’s No. 11 because it’s the closest she could get to No. 12, her traditional choice. She wore that number growing up because her father, C.Y., wore it during his playing career at Georgia Southern and overseas. Young was No. 12 at Michigan, but at UNC that jersey is retired for Ivory Latta. So 11 was the next best thing, but last year was worn by Emily Sullivan. This year, it belongs to Young.

#21: MALU TSHITENGE#21: MALU TSHITENGELike Tucker, Tshitenge picked a new number

as a freshman because her usual selection wasn’t available. She wore 20 throughout high school, initially choosing it because her birthday is Nov. 20. When she got to UNC, Leah Church had 20 so Tshitenge went with 21. Now, 20 is available but Tshitenge isn’t making the switch. “I’ve gotten used to it and I’m very superstitious so I don’t want to change now,” she said. “Things are going well in 21 so far.”

#25: DEJA KELLY#25: DEJA KELLYKelly wears the number in honor of her father, Darren, who played at the University of Texas and overseas. “Growing up watching him play inspired me,” Kelly said. “I decided to pick his number at a really young age and it stuck.”

#30: JAELYNN MURRAY#30: JAELYNN MURRAYMurray likes No. 30 because it (kind of)

rhymes with her last name. She wore it in high school and through her first two years at UNC. Last season, she suffered an ACL injury in the preseason and missed the entire year. Janelle Bailey, a close friend since the two came on their recruiting visit together, wore Murray’s jersey number in tribute. Murray, who was on the bench, wore Bailey’s No. 44 for the season. Although incredibly grateful for Bailey’s gesture, Murray is excited to be back on the court in her old number. “It was well-respected while I was gone, but having it back means so much,” Murray said. “She took very good care of it – she repped it really well.”

#31: ANYA POOLE#31: ANYA POOLEThe number was handed to her as a seventh

grader and she’s stuck with it ever since.

#44: JANELLE BAILEY#44: JANELLE BAILEYNumber 44 has been Bailey’s since high

school because her older sister, Gigi, wore it. The exception was the 2019-20 season, when she wore Jaelynn Murray’s jersey No. 30 in tribute. Now she’s back to 44.

Notables• Janelle Bailey has been named as one of 10

finalists for the Lisa Leslie Award as the nation’s top center. It’s the third year in a row that the Tar Heel center has been on the top-10 list. Bailey also was announced recently as a candidate (one of 30 nationally and one of two in the ACC) for the Senior CLASS Award.

• Bailey comes into the Clemson game with 957 career rebounds, three away from moving into a tie for ninth place on UNC’s all-time rebounds list with Jessica Breland (who is now in the WNBA and recently signed with the Indiana Fever). Bailey is the 10th player in program history with 1,500 points and 900 rebounds. (She now has 1,656 points and 957 rebounds.) Should she reach 1,000 career rebounds, she’ll be the sixth player in UNC history with 1,500/1,000.

• Petra Holešínská’s 21-point game at Virginia Tech marked her fourth 20-point game of the season, a team high, and her third in a row. Over the three-game span of Notre Dame, Louisville and Virginia Tech, all of which she came off the bench, she averaged 23.7 points and shot 53.1 percent from the field, 50 percent from three (14-28). • Stephanie Watts scored her 1,500th career

point mark against NC State, giving UNC two players (the other is Janelle Bailey) who have passed that mark. UNC is one of two NCAA DI schools (Arkansas is the other) with two 1,500-point scorers on its roster.

• Through their first 16 games, the Tar Heels had outrebounded their opponent in all but two, and both of those (Va Tech at home, at Syracuse) were losses. But the Tar Heels are coming off two games in which they were outrebounded but still won: 44-39 vs NC State and 46-41 vs. Pitt.

• On the year, UNC is averaging 8.2 more rebounds than opponents and ranks 23rd in the NCAA in rebounding margin. The Tar Heels are ninth nationally in rebounds per game (45.3) and ninth in defensive rebounds per game (30.6 per game).

• UNC is the only school in the conference with two ACC Freshman of the Year honorees on its roster (and often on the court together) – Stephanie Watts won in 2016 and Janelle Bailey in 2018.

• The Tar Heels rank among the ACC’s top five in eight statistical categories: second in rebounds per game and field goal percentage defense; third in scoring average, assist/turnover ratio and defensive rebounds; fourth in turnover margin; and fifth in offensive rebounds and scoring margin.

• UNC’s 76 points at Syracuse marked the highest score in a loss this season and the Orange’s 88 points marked the highest scoring total the Tar Heels have allowed. The Tar Heels have given up that many points just one other time under coach Courtney Banghart, in a 93-75 loss at BC last season.

• UNC has not had a triple-double in program history, but twice this season a player has come within one assist: Against S.C. State on Dec. 3, Kennedy Todd-Williams had 14 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in only 21 minutes of play. Against Notre Dame, Stephanie Watts had 25 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists.

• Showing they’re more than just shooters, both of UNC’s grad student guards have established new career highs in assists this season, Petra Holešínská with seven against South Carolina

Page 4: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL - Clemson Tigers

GAME 19 » vs CLEMSON » FEB. 18, 2021State and Stephanie Watts with nine against Notre Dame.

• The win at Pitt marked the first time this season the Tar Heels won with fewer than four players scoring in double figures. Up to that point UNC had put four or more scorers in double figures in every win, and had won all but one game (at Va Tech) in which four or more players hit double digits.

• UNC scored 90 or more points in its first four games this season. The last time the Tar Heels reached 90 four games in a row was at the start of the 2007-08 season, in wins over Elon, Coppin State, Syracuse and Georgia State Nov. 13-19, 2007.

Lineup VarietyWhen Stephanie Watts, Petra Holešínská, Deja Kelly, Alyssa Ustby and Janelle Bailey took the court

to start the game at Pitt on Feb. 14, it marked the seventh different starting lineup this season. Bailey, a senior center, has been the constant, starting each game. Freshman guard Deja Kelly has started all except NC State. Six other players – grad students Watts and Holešínská, sophomore Malu Tshitenge and freshmen Ustby, Todd-Williams and Anya Poole – have made at least four starts each.

Deeper Bench This SeasonAlthough the UNC roster is smaller this season (11 in 2020-21 compared with 15 in 2019-20), the

Tar Heels are a far deeper team. Through 18 games, UNC is averaging 25.2 points per game off the bench, with a high of 57 against High Point and a low of five against NC State. Last season the Tar Heels averaged just 8.5 points off the bench and in four games got zero points from subs.

• UNC’s bench has outscored the opponent bench in all but four games (home games vs. Syracuse, Miami and NC State, at Pitt). In comparison, last year’s team saw its bench outscore the opposition just six times all year.

• In 13 ACC games this season, UNC has averaged 21.8 points off the bench, with seven at Wake Forest, 24 at Miami, 26 against Syracuse, 24 at home vs. Wake Forest, 11 at home vs. Miami, 24 vs. Virginia Tech, 27 at Syracuse, 24 at home vs. Notre Dame, 33 at Louisville, 25 at Virginia Tech, 32 vs. FSU, five vs. NC State and 24 at Pitt.

• In further testament to the team’s depth, UNC doesn’t have a player ranked in the ACC’s top 25 in minutes. Freshman Alyssa Ustby leads the team in minutes, averaging 28.7 per game. Janelle Bailey is next at 27.6.

• Ustby also leads the team in minutes vs. ACC opponents, averaging 31.7 per game, still not in the league’s top 25.

• Petra Holešínská leads the team in 20-point games this season with four, all off the bench.• In six games this season the leading scorer has come off the bench.

Staying flexibleLike most other teams, the Tar Heels have had a number of schedule revisions due to Covid. • They were supposed to play at Louisville on Dec. 13 but found out on the evening of Dec. 11

that game would be postponed. After Miami also had an open Sunday, an impromptu match-up was arranged, with the ACC announcing on the evening of Dec. 12 that UNC would travel to Miami to play on the afternoon of Dec. 14.

• A Monday matchup gave UNC three games in the final week before the holiday break. It marked the second time Carolina had played three times in a week: The Tar Heels opened with a trio of home games in five days, hosting Radford, UNCG and High Point on Nov. 25-29.

• The ACC announced on Dec. 28 that UNC’s Dec. 31 game at Syracuse had been postponed and at that point the Tar Heels still expected to play at Pitt on Jan. 3. But that game eventually was postponed as well, giving Carolina a break of more than two weeks between its Dec. 20 game against Wake Forest and its Jan. 5 game at Louisville.

• Eventually that rescheduled Jan. 5 game at Louisville also was postponed, giving the Tar Heels three weeks of idleness between the Dec. 20 game against Wake and the Jan. 10 game against Miami. The game at Louisville was eventually rescheduled for Jan. 28 and played on that date.

• UNC’s trip to Syracuse was rescheduled for Jan. 19 and the Tar Heels will travel to Pitt on Feb. 14. The Tar Heels had been scheduled to host Virginia on Feb. 14, but that date became open after the Cavaliers ended their season.

• The Tar Heels have added an additional game against Virginia Tech for Feb. 28, wrapping up the regular season and replacing the road game against Duke. That will be the third meeting of the season with the Hokies and the second trip to Blacksburg in the span of a month.

• On Feb. 6, the ACC announced that UNC’s home game with Boston College on Feb. 11 had been postponed, giving the Tar Heels and idle week between matchups with NC State and Pitt.

Heading into the Clemson game Janelle Bailey• 1656 career points • 957 rebounds

Petra Holešínská• 1119 career points (236 at UNC)• 206 career three-pointers (45 at UNC)

Stephanie Watts• 1534 career points (1493 at UNC)• 102 games played for UNC (106 total)

Career Milestone Watch

Bailey Earns Weekly HonorSenior center Janelle Bailey was named ACC

Player of the Week on Dec. 21 following a week in which she averaged 19.3 points and 11 rebounds over three games for UNC.

Bailey scored a season-high 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a highly-efficient 24 minutes of play against the Orange. She was also 5-for-5 from the foul line and had two assists and two steals. She bookended that performance with a pair of double-doubles: at Miami on Monday, she finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Against Wake Forest on her home court at Carmichael Arena on Sunday, Bailey had 19 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

It marks the third time in her career that Bailey has been named ACC Player of the Week. After earning Freshman of the Week honors seven times in her first season as a Tar Heel, she earned the Player of the Week recognition once as a sophomore and then shared the honor once as a junior.

Preseason ACC HonorsSenior Janelle Bailey was named to the

Preseason All-ACC Team and freshman Deja Kelly was picked for the Newcomer Watch List. The Tar Heels were consensus honorees.

• In the team rankings, the Tar Heels were fourth by the coaches and fifth by the Blue Ribbon panel, the highest since 2014.

Bigger than Basketball: Educate and ActivateThroughout the 2020-21 campaign, the UNC women’s basketball team will

highlight various causes, dedicating the season to advocating for and bringing awareness to issues that are near and dear to the Tar Heel student-athletes and coaching staff.

UNC takes on Clemson this Thursday and NC State this Sunday, and the team has dedicated the games to raising awareness of domestic violence.

The National Coalition on Domestic Violence (NCADV) defines domestic violence as the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, threats, economic, and emotional/psychological abuse. The frequency and severity of domestic violence varies dramatically. (ncadv.org)

Some facts about domestic violence: • One in four women and one in nine men experience severe intimate partner

physical violence, sexual violence and/or stalking which can lead to physical, mental and reproductive health issues. (ncadv.org)

• Many victims of domestic violence suffer in silence due to the stigma around domestic violence and the fear that they might be treated differently by family, friends, and coworkers. Educating and continuing to raise community awareness of the dynamics of domestic abuse are keys to reducing these perceptions and ending the silent cycle of abuse that many victims face. (www.thehotline.org)

• Despite the stereotype that men are rarely the victims of domestic abuse, the truth is that victims can come from any socioeconomic background, education level, race, age, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. (nccadv.org)

• Forty-three percent of dating college women reported experiencing violent and abusive dating behaviors including physical, sexual, digital, verbal, or other controlling abuse. Nearly 1 in 3 college women say they have been in an abusive dating relationship. (loveisrespect.org)

A domestic violence experience is common among those who become homeless and for many it is the immediate cause. (EndHomelessness.org)

All season, our team has collected toiletries and will donate them this week to IFC HomeStart, a shelter in Chapel Hill that serves families and single women.

You can help by believing survivors – no one deserves abuse, and abuse is never the victim’s fault. You can also support by donating your time, funds or needed items to organizations that support victims of domestic violence.

The following organizations offer opportunities to make an impact.• North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence (nccadv.org) • National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ncadv.org) • Compass Center for Women and Families, Chapel Hill (compassctr.org) • HomeStart (ifcweb.org/services/homestart)Together we can work to break the cycle of domestic violence. 2020-21 Season OverviewRadford Game: Food InsecurityUNCG, High Point Games: Black Lives Matter movementSouth Carolina State, Charlotte Games: Down syndrome awarenessWake Forest, Miami Games: Literacy awarenessSyracuse, Wake Forest Games: HomelessnessWeek of Dec. 28-Jan. 3: Alzheimer’s awarenessMiami Game: Gun violenceVirginia Tech, Syracuse Games: Pediatric cancer awarenessNotre Dame Game: Mental health awarenessLouisville, Virginia Tech Games: Appreciation for Frontline WorkersFlorida State, NC State Games: LGBTQ rights awarenessPitt Game: The fight against Breast CancerClemson, NC State Games: Domestic violence awareness
