2014 PREVIEW

After making its sixth NCAA Division II East Region Championship appearance in the last seven years, the University of New Haven is eyeing its 11th national postseason bid in program history. The Chargers won the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division Regular Season Championship and hosted the East Region Cham-pionship a year ago. Ninth-year head coach Jen Starek will look to guideaChargersquadwhichfeaturesfivereturningstarters, sevenreturning letterwinners and eight newcomers this season.

The program’s all-time leader in wins, Starek was named the NE-10 Coach of the Year and recorded her 300-career victory as a head coach last year, while third baseman Lindsey Couturier concluded aprolificcareeratNewHavenastheall-timeleaderinRBI(157)andassists(444).TheChargerswillalsoneedtofilltheholeleftatfirstbasebythree-yearstarterJessSpiveywhowillnotseeactionduring her senior season after discovering an injury in the offseason.

PITCHINGWith both starters back from last season and the addition of a transfer, the Chargers 2015 pitching staff will be one of the most experienced in the nation this season. Juniors Nicole King and Vic-toria Cabral were both selected to the NE-10 All-Conference Third Team and recorded 14-plus wins.

Cabral, also an All-East Region Second Team honoree, posted a 14-9 record with 20 starts and a team-best 1.25 ERA. She held opponents to a .189 batting average and tossed seven shutouts and 17 complete games. Cabral threw a nearly-perfect game with one hit, eight strikeouts and no walks against Franklin Pierce on April 6, 2014.

King enters her third season with the Chargers and looks to con-tinue her All-Conference numbers from a year ago. She started 27 games and boasted a 15-9 record in the circle. The Front Royal, Va. native’s 2.23 ERA and 153 strikeouts were the best of her career and she moved herself into the top 10 all-time at UNH with 287 career strikeouts. She threw a no-hitter against Southern Connecti-cut State on March 25, 2014 and struck out double-digit batters on four occasions.

The two juniors will be joined on the rubber by Moravian (Pa.) transfer Carsin Conner who has two years of eligibility remaining. The Howell, N.J. native boasted a 1.69 ERA and a 7-2 record in 14 appearances with the Division III Greyhounds last season. She was second on the team with 37 strikeouts, while adding one complete game shutout.

The staff will also include a trio of freshman – Cassie Griglock, Alyssa Monteverde and Heather Ferranti. All three will look to supply the Chargers with much needed depth out of the bullpen. Griglock and Monteverde were both All-Conference honorees during their high school careers, while Ferranti helped lead the Amity softball team to the Class LL State Championship as a sophomore.

INFIELDWithoutCouturieratthehotcornerforthefirsttimeinfouryears, theChargerswillfeatureayoungbutexperiencedinfieldthisyear.Julie Devlin and Gabby DeLeo will return as seasoned sophomores in 2015. A NE-10 All-Rookie Team honoree last year, Devlin started all 47 games at shortstop and posted a .208 batting average. Her rookie campaign included six home runs, 15 RBI and 26 runs scored. Second baseman, DeLeo also started all 47 games a year

In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who

hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs.

UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. project before graduation.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The conference consists of 15 member institutions located throughout the Northeast in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 are Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfield, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), The College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.).

The conference’s 15 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, N.Y. to Waltham, Mass. and from Colchester, Vt. to Garden City, N.Y. Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, Manchester, New Haven, Worcester and New York City. The Northeast-10 was proud to welcome the New Haven and Adelphi in the conference’s latest expansion, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic institutions.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education, both on and off the field,ofmorethan6,000studentathletes.Amongthe many accomplishments of these institutions are NCAA Division II national championships in women’sbasketball, women’scrosscountry, fieldhockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’ssoccer, women’strackandfield, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving.

The conference is coming off a banner season in 2013-14, as the Northeast-10 saw three teams claim national championships. First, the Southern New Hampshire University men’s soccer program won the NCAA Championship this past December, followed by the Bentley University women’sbasketballteamclaimingitsfirst-ever

title in March to cap an undefeated season. The Adelphi University women’s lacrosse program made it No. 3 after defeating Lock Haven, 7-5, in the title game in May.

A pair of Southern Connecticut State University student-athletes also won national championhips this past winter, as Nick Lebron won the individual national title in the haptathlon at the 2014 Men’s NCAA Division II Men’s Indoor Track & Field ChampionshipandRaymondCswerkofinishedfirstinthe400IMatthe2014NCAADivisionIIMen’s Swimming & Diving Championship.

From thefieldofplay to inside the classroom, the Northeast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. Over 50 percent of all conference student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA throughout the 2012-13 academic year and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll as a result. An astounding 138 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall before 184 reached the benchmark in the spring. The Northeast-10 also honored 247 student-athletes as members of its academic all-conference teams.

The Northeast-10 also remains focused on its community endeavors, as its fundraising donations for Make-A-Wish is more than any other Division II conference in the country the past decade. The conference also announced a formal partnership last fall with Team IMPACT, anon-profitorganizationthatmatcheschildrenwith life-threatening illnesses with college sports teams. Currently, more than 40 Northeast-10 programs are currently matched with a Team IMPACT child.

Through the establishment and enforcement of regulations, the conference aims to encourage policies that enable intercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and be considered an integral part of the total educational offerings at our member institutions. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of success including the growth from seven original member institutions to more than double its size 34 years later, the contention for and winning of multiple national championships, and the recognition of student-athlete performances off the field and in theclassroom.
