Domaine J-F Mugnier is one of the finest addresses in Chambolle-Musigny, producing wines of exceptional

beauty and elegance.

No Burgundy lover should miss out on owning some of the fabulous bottles offered in these pages.

Domaine la Chapelle de Blagny, Meursault

We are the first to introduce and offer wines from this exciting new Meursault Domaine in the UK. From the 12th to

the 18th centuries, these vineyards belonged to the Cistercian Abbey of Maizières, then in 1811 were bought by an

ancestor of the present owners. Since then, 5 generations have quietly been tending the vineyards and harvesting

the grapes – selling them, until recently, to local Burgundian merchants. The property is named after a 15th century

chapel next to the winery.

The vineyards of the hamlet of Blagny may be less well-known than Meursault 1st Growths like Perrières, Genevrières

or Charmes, but quality-wise they are up there with the greatest. They lie on high, steep slopes between Meursault

and Puligny-Montrachet. They cover just 40 hectares, yet include over 20% of the 1st Growth appellations of the

two communes. This is classic white wine land, with clay-limestone marls, and is 90% planted with Chardonnay

(although Pinot Noir is permitted, to make a little Blagny 1er Cru rouge). Global warming is a fact of life in

Burgundy, and this has often brought earlier, warmer springs than in the recent past. Combined with a hot summer,

this can sometimes lead to over-ripeness of grapes. Blagny vineyards however have sufficient altitude for the grapes

to come to ripeness slowly, while retaining precious, fresh acidity. These vineyards are perfectly positioned to

produce 1st Growth Meursaults of the greatest complexity, with immaculate balance, and great length.

Meursault 1er Cru Les RavellesDomaine La Chapelle de Blagny 2015This is a tiny vineyard of only 3 acres, and probably Meursault’s best kept secret, among its 1st Growths. The vines lie at the top of the slope, abutting Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Sous le Puis. In colour, this is pale, green-lemon, with fragrantly open, very fresh aromas. Palate is full yet lively, with stone-fruit intensity recalling white peach, and a refreshing, long-lasting aftertaste (for drinking 2018-2021+).

Meursault 1er Cru BlagnyDomaine La Chapelle de Blagny 2015This wine is an assemblage of equal parts of two 1st Growths: La Pièce sous le Bois, planted with older vines, and Sous Blagny. In colour, this is pale, green-golden, with complex, lively aromas including perfumed, dried apricot and spiced lemon. Palate is medium-weight and creamily-textured, with luscious freshness and superb, silky aftertaste – a magnificent Meursault, for drinking 2018-2022+.

Meursault 1er Cru La Pièce Sous Le BoisDomaine La Chapelle de Blagny 2015The smallest of the three plots owned by the domaine: production is tiny from these old vines, and we have just 5 cases of 6 bottles to allocate. Pale green-golden colour is sustained all the way to the rim, the aromas being open and richly complex. Palate is full-bodied, with powerful fruitiness, taut structure and wonderful, vibrant aftertaste. Texture is silky, with lovely depth of buttery lemon and hazelnut flavours. Highly recommended (for drinking 2018-2023+).

Domaine du Cellier aux Moines, Givry

Passionate commitment and substantial investment by Philippe Pascal and his family over more than 10 years has

brought about the renaissance of one of Burgundy’s oldest estates, with buildings and vine-bearing land dating back

more than 8 centuries. As with many of Burgundy’s greatest wines – for instance Clos de Bèze, Clos de Vougeot

or Clos de Tart – this Clos and winery were established by monks from a great, local Abbey, in this case Cistercian

monks, around AD 1130. They ran the Cellier until the French Revolution, then the land was sold and divided.

The Pascal family bought the buildings (a classified Historic Monument) in 2004, then managed to acquire many of

the original, surrounding vineyards two years later. On several levels, in a neighbouring quarry, they have now built a

cutting-edge winery, where wine-making is entirely driven by gravity. To their old vine holdings they are adding new

plantings with carefully selected, low-yielding Pinots Noirs. What is today a tiny production will gradually expand, as

the produce of young vineyards becomes worthy of inclusion in their top bottlings.

Tasting wines here was a Eureka moment for us! We have often shipped red wines fom Givry, as this is an under-

appreciated source of superb Pinots Noirs, known for their perfume, soft fruitiness, delicate tannins, and great finesse.

It is thrilling to find a domaine which is raising the bar for the whole district, without espousing – as some have sadly

done, to attract attention – over-extraction or excessive use of new oak.

Givry 1er Cru Clos du Cellier aux MoinesDomaine du Cellier aux Moines 2015Before deciding on the blend for this wine, the produce of the estate’s youngest vines, along with any Pinot bunches showing less than perfect ripeness when checked on the sorting tables, were eliminated. For this final blend, two separate cuvées have been assembled together. One comes from recently planted Pinots (aged between 5 and 9 years old) growing in shallow soils towards the top of the Clos. The other comes from deeper soils in the mid-part of the slope, from old vines planted in the mid-1970s. Colour is a lively, deep purple-ruby, with aromas showing pungent, ripe fruitiness, with freshness. A proportion of whole bunches was included in the fermentation, adding complexity. In the mouth, this has magnificent structure, which is well-sustained through mid-palate, culminating in supple tannins and delicious, fresh length. This is a strikingly lovely wine, and superb value (for drinking 2018-2025+).

Domaine Dugat-Py, Gevrey-Chambertin

The Dugat family have been winegrowers in Gevrey-Chambertin since the beginning of the 17th century, with Ber-

nard and his son Loïc being the 12th and 13th generation at the helm of this hugely respected domaine. We are

proud to have worked with Bernard since the late 1990s: tasting in the majestic, vaulted, Gothic cellar in which the

wines age is a magnificent experience - even more so when tasting what is one of the most gorgeous vintages we have

ever seen at the domaine. Few growers bring such passion and energy to their vine-cultivation and wine-making,

which has been 100% organic certified since the 2003 vintage. Over the years, the family has accumulated old vines

and low-yielding Pinots, enabling them to offer some of Burgundy’s most thrilling wines. Here we see reds that are

intensely concentrated, invigorating, multi-layered and age-worthy.

Please let us know where your interests may lie with the selection below, so that we can pass on details of availabili-

ties and pricing as soon as we have them (due in early October 2017, after the harvest).

Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du RoyDomaine Dugat-Py 2015This wine comes from four well-situated plots in Gevrey-Chambertin, located near to the Premiers Crus. The vines are between 50 and 120 years old, giving a tiny yield from small, thick-skinned grapes. In colour, this is deep, ruby-purple, the nose being open and densely perfumed. About 70% new barrels were used for ageing, to complement the bright, pure fruitiness of this wine. The palate shows beautiful balance and poise, combining tightly woven, dark berry flavours, powerful structure and superb freshness. Silky, rounded tannins coat the mouth, leading to a long, fine finish (for drinking 2020-2028+).

Gevrey-Chambertin Les EvocellesDomaine Dugat-Py 2015This superbly-placed vineyard is situated on comparable contours to Gevrey’s most northerly First Growths. Here, the vines need to be partly cultivated by horse-drawn machinery, as the steep slope is impossible for a tractor. The grapes were so healthy that over 60% whole bunches went into the fermenting vats, bringing extra aromatic and textural complexity to the wine. This is rich ruby-purple in colour, with vibrant, floral, red berry aromas on the nose. Tasting this wine reveals brilliant, wild strawberry fruitiness, mouth-filling, creamy texture, with an elegant, fresh, harmoniously long finish. A charming wine, for drinking 2020-2026+.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les CorbeauxDomaine Dugat-Py 2015This vineyard marches alongside the Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin. 70% whole bunches went into the fermenting vat, with the wine then ageing in 100% new oak barrels. Colour is very deep, the nose being intensely aromatic and attractive, recalling red rather than black fruits (thanks to the high clay content in the soils, we are told). Palate is full, fleshy and impressively structured, with deep, spiced fruitiness, fine texture, silky tannins and a long-flavoured finish that exudes finesse. For mid- and long-term ageing, this has outstanding harmony (for drinking 2020-2032+).

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite ChapelleDomaine Dugat-Py 2015This vineyard also touches a Grand Cru – that of Chapelle-Chambertin. This is a more delicate wine than Les Corbeaux, and accordingly a lower proportion – just one third – of whole bunches were added to the fermenting vat, so that its slender gracefulness should in no way be masked. Colour is an impressive ruby-purple, with aromas being focussed and pure, recalling cassis, black cherries and violets. Palate shows gorgeous balance, being full yet linear, with lovely concentration and the most delicate, fine tannins. The finish is fresh and very long (for drinking 2020-2030+).

Charmes-Chambertin Grand CruDomaine Dugat-Py 2015This Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin is totally captivating. 35-40% whole bunches went into the vat here, with the object of intensifying the wine’s vivacious fruit, fine texture and exceptional finesse. Rich ruby-purple colour, aromas are exceptionally concentrated, recalling rose petals, with ripe, red and black fruits. The palate is full-bodied and opulent, exploding with beautiful, rich, mouth-coating flavour, and very fine, charming tannins on the finish. This is a long, refreshing, complex wine of superb potential for mid- and long-term enjoyment (for drinking 2022-2032+).

Mazis-Chambertin Grand CruDomaine Dugat-Py 2015This wine comes from 3 small zones of the Mazis-bas section of the Grand Cru, from vines which now average 60 years of age. Bernard has no doubt that vine age contributes significantly to wine concentration and intensity: this 2015 exhibits both in spades. Colour is very deep, with aromas recalling black fruits, allied to fresh, floral spiciness. The palate is spectacular, being full, compact, lusciously textured, with multi-layered violet-scented fruitiness, opulent, creamy texture and great freshness and length on the finish. This is an outstanding wine, for the most special occasions over the next 15 to 30+ years, we suggest. The production is minuscule, and we will share out our bottles as fairly as we can (for drinking 2027-2047+).

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, Chambolle-Musigny

Frédéric Mugnier’s wines are now greatly admired and loved. He tells us we were his first overseas client. This was

for his 1985s, which proved to be the first of many classics. 30 vintages later, it is a delight and a privilege to be offer-

ing his 2015s, which are absolutely glorious.

Mugnier no longer offers his Musigny at the same time as his other young wines. He became exasperated at finding

the wine listed by restaurants, or otherwise consumed, immediately after release. Unless given time to mature prop-

erly, its character, subtleties and length do not appear in full. We plan to have allocations of his 2015 as soon as the

wine is released, perhaps in 5 years. When pressed, Mugnier said: “10 years from vintage is usually a good time for

drinking Musigny… maybe the beginning of the drinking window.”

Available stocks of the wines in his range are small, as his vineyard holdings in these appellations are often minuscule,

and only 2/3 of a normal harvest was produced in 2015, as the summer drought concentrated the grapes severely. We

are accordingly shipping the wines in 3-bottle cases so that we can sspread the wines as widely as possible amongst

our loyal customers. When we tasted the wines for the first time in May 2016, Mugnier commented: “It’s an excellent

vintage. I like all my babies.”

Chambolle-MusignyDomaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier 2015Half of this wine comes from a vineyard named Combe d’Orveau, near to Grand Cru Echézeaux, the other half from 1st Growth Les Plantes. In colour, this is medium-deep, ruby-purple, the nose being fresh and fragrant with cherry and raspberry aromas. Palate has buoyant, soft fruit, fine texture and beautiful length (for drinking 2018-2023+).

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les FuéesDomaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier 2015This First Growth vineyard is an extension southwards of the slope where Bonnes-Mares grows. A recently-published geological map shows clearly that the subsoil changes, exactly where the vineyard boundary lies, thus demonstrating that the ancients knew a thing or two, before geologists came to investigate. The wine does not have the structure of a Bonnes-Mares, but instead a dancing fruitiness, with harmony, lightness and length. The 2015 is more richly purple than the previous wine, with aromas which are just as compelling. Palate is more singular, with dense fruit and charming, refreshing length (for drinking 2019-2028+).

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les AmoureusesDomaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier 2015The Les Amoureuses vineyard lies just downhill from Le Musigny, and comes closer to it in elegance, perfume and perfection than any other First Growth in the commune. Colour is medium deep, ruby-purple, vividly catching the light. The nose is pretty, showing charming freshness – an overture to complex spiciness. Palate shows delicate, dense fruitiness, with every facet perfectly knit into a silkily-textured, dazzling wine of the greatest beauty (for drinking 2020-2030+).

Bonnes-Mares Grand CruDomaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier 2015The 60% of this vineyard which dates from re-plantings in the 1980s (the balance being older) have now reached full maturity. The result is that this cuvée has been going from strength to strength. Colour is medium-deep ruby-purple, with strikingly open, well-ripened, roasted fruit aromas. Palate has rich body, with concentrated fruitiness, impressive structure, fully-rounded tannins and superb length. This is a magnificent Bonnes-Mares, showing not just power and potential, but also elegance, finesse and exceptional length of complex aftertaste (for drinking 2023-2045+). Only four barrels were made of this wine, yielding just 100 dozen bottles. Sharing out the allocations of all these wines will be difficult, so please let us know your wishes as soon as possible.
