100 Mile Club® Rollout Checklist Welcome

CERTIFCATE PATH SCHOOLS!

Congratulations! We are happy you will be implementing The 100 Mile Club® program and want to give you the tools for an active start to the school year. If you haven’t already, dig in to the website, get a feel of who we are and why we’re here, watch some videos, and smile. We are all in this together and becoming part of 100 Mile Club means you are part of a family of schools with the same goal: to improve the health and well-being of children at school through daily physical activity in a noncompetitive, supportive, and inclusive environment.

This quick little checklist covers key elements to consider when launching the program at your school. This checklist is meant to be a guide only, so the timeframes may vary and not all items may be applicable to your school or group.

With school or faculty approval, determine a start date for the program and develop a time line of key dates for the steps below.

o Share the Good News!! If appropriate, speak at a community/school night, back to school night, or PTO/PTA meeting to share that 100 Mile Club® is coming!.

o Send communication to the school community announcing the program and explaining the benefits of participation. This can be done via email, school website, facebook, parent packets, mailings, newsletters, etc.

o Schedule a kickoff assembly at your school. This can be a stand-alone assembly or part of an already scheduled back to school assembly. We have power points, videos, and resources in our Coaches Corner just for this!

o Build excitement and promote volunteer &/or teacher training sessions once the date/locations are scheduled.

o If your school allows, set up a Facebook Page. Call it the <insert your school name here> 100 Mile Club®!

o Start a simple webpage on your school or PTA/O site.

o OPTIONAL: Order Challenge Accepted ID Cards

Make a Plan, Build Your Team, & Schedule Trainings

Decide if your school wants/needs to train all school staff (recommended) or just a few select teachers and volunteers. These trainings can be done at the beginning of and throughout the school year as you generate more interest. Remember, build a team around the 100 Mile Club Mission and Vision, and you will create amazing energy!

o If you decide to train all staff, ask your Principal to designate a professional development period. Making the entire school staff aware of the program is a key to increased success.

o Show the 100 Mile Club video or videos.

o Grab a PowerPoint and modify for your group.

o If you decide to train selected volunteers or teachers, designate trainingtimes to explain your chosen mile-logging system. Keep it simple andfun!

At School

o Schedule and start thinking about Medal/Recognition Ceremonies. It’s

never too early.

o Set your cutoff date to earn miles. This is typically 2 weeks prior to your

medal ceremony.

o Share best practices with other school staff. You may see staff hop onboard

mid- year. Welcome them as they become ready.

o Encourage ALL staff to participate. Teachers can do miles, too! We all need

to move during the day so encourage everyone at school to join the 100 Mile Club® Team!

o Experiment with 100 Mile Club at different times during the day to see what

is most effective. (e.g., before school, as part of morning activities, before the most focused coursework, before/after lunch, as an afternoon pick-me-up, after school…).

o Celebrate milestones! Morning announcements, fun signs, whatever. Have a

blast with this!

(Optional) Testing Weeks

o For ALL. Increase 100 Mile Club® time during standardized testing weeks to

help students manage stress and improve concentration. Seriously, even a lap or two will refocus and reenergize the most lethargic of test-takers.

o For students with special needs. Communicate with your site specialists and

incorporate appropriate modifications/accommodations to your students educational plan (IEP, etc.) who may need to take breaks throughout standardized testing sessions. A nice walk does wonders to break up a testing session for those who need it.

For more ideas on this, visit Coaches Corner.
