After my 24 hour journey to Uganda, I finally landed in Entebbe. We were
met by our leader, Steph who would be with us the whole of the trip. We
was shown to our transport which was a huge truck, it was amazing. We
arrived at our first destination which was a back packer’s hostel in which
we would stay at for our first to night to get everything prepared for the
rest of the trip. All the food was made in the truck and wasn’t very different
to what we had back home except fresher fruit etc. We all slept in tents
and had a partner who we would be sharing them with for the rest of the
trip.
The next day, we set off on our 6 hour journey to ‘The Hairy Lemon Island
Camp’, where we would stay for part of our journey and walk to where we
started our community/school project. To get to this island, we would have
to have around a 3 minute boat journey from one side of the river to
another. We had to cross the River Nile which had a very strong current at
one part but the other parts were very calm. When we arrived there, we
saw all red-tailed monkeys playing up in the trees. Everything was very eco-
friendly including the solar power, a water wheel and self-composting
toilets.

The next day we set off into the village, taking in all our surroundings. The
children always had massive smiles on their faces and would run up to you
and ask for a high-five. When we arrived at the school, we were greeted
by one of the teachers and the headmaster. All the children were shy at
first but soon were eager to get involved in helping to show us their school.
We walked to the water pump to collect water in some tanks but ended
up staying there for longer than expected to play with the children. The
local church/school was only next door, so we went and said hello. A
massive group photo was taken but we had to leave so we could get on
with helping to build the school. We done this for 3 days and by the time
we left, we had helped clear the floor from dust/sand, get rid of the left
over cement on the walls and cover them up with more cement to fill in
the cracks. When we went back to collect the tools in the truck, all the
children and teachers were waiting in a massive group to wish us good
luck on the rest of our journey.
The rest of the 2 weeks consisted of a lot of traveling and helping the local
people. We went to places such as ‘Murchison Falls National Park’ and a
Rhino Sanctuary. We stayed at both. When we stayed at the Rhino
sanctuary, we were in the middle of a fenced off section where the rhinos
would keep coming up to fence and eating the grass. We also went on a
night walk in the pitch black with no torches and we weren’t allowed any
communication with each other, I didn’t enjoy this very much. When we
stayed at Murchison Falls, we went on a boat trip for 3 hours, we saw the
waterfall and got as close as we were aloud as the current was extremely
strong.
Thank you to everyone who supported me on this huge adventure. It was
absolutely amazing and I don’t think nothing could beat it in the future.
Thank you for all the donations and good lucks, they all helped me through
the struggle of raising the money and finally getting to take part on this
journey.
