Survey 2015

Purpose:

The purpose for the 2015 HYC Membership Survey is to acquire the information

needed in creating:

A Long-Range Capital Asset Plan

The Capital Assets of HYC all have useful lives.

The useful life and timing for replacement of these assets can be reasonably

anticipated, cost-estimated and scheduled.

And

Plans for Future Growth

The future of the Club is driven by membership desired expansion plans and/or

addition of amenities.

Once determined, expansion of assets and amenities can also be reasonably

planned for.

This Survey provides the information needed.

About the Survey:

• The Survey was 8 pages in length, with 147 questions, of which 26 questions were requests for comments.

• With 363 surveys returned and with 147 questions on each survey, there were 53,361 data fields for capture and analysis.

• All responses, including comments, were captured in a database and spreadsheet. A question by question compilation of responses was made.

• A copy of the Compilation, A Preliminary Analysis Report and an In-depth Analysis Report along with 38 pages of Comments have been presented to the Board and Management.

All comments have been read by each HYC Board Member & Management Team.

Are the Surveys representative of the Club Membership?

• 363 of the 650 Club members (56%) returned the Survey • Statistically the survey accuracy is within:

• +/- 3.5% at a 95% Confidence Level, or • +/-5% at the 99% Confidence Level.

• Comparisons of Age, Gender, Years as a Member and Class of membership of those returning the survey are remarkably similar to the entire Club membership.

• Slip holders returned surveys at the same rate as the rest of the membership.

Conclusion: The surveys can be relied upon as VERY representative of the Club Membership.

HYC currently has 654 members, including 4 temporary members.

The Club has grown 6.3% over the past 10 years, and 7.5% over the past 16 years.

Age • 33% of the surveys were from members 70 years of age or older. • 32% of the surveys were from members 60-69 years of age. • 35% of the surveys were from members 59 years of age or younger.

• The Median age of HYC Member is 65.0.

• The current Average (Mean) age of the HYC Membership is 63.8. • The Average age of HYC Membership in 8/2011 was 62.7.

• This is an insignificant 1.75% increase.

37% of the Members reported being strictly social members.

Active Boating Participation: • 63% or 229 of the 363 respondents reported engaging in some form of boating one or more days a year. • 48% or 173 reported racing sailboats • 41% or 147 reported Individual Pleasure (Sail or Power) • 14% or 52 reported Fishing • 14% or 49 reported Cruise Sail Club • 9% or 32 reported Powerboat Cruising Club

76% of the Members who reported themselves as active boaters, reported they race sailboats one or more days each year.

MAINSHEET: The membership is overwhelmingly satisfied with the information provided in the Mainsheet.

The membership prefers to receive the Mainsheet by mail. EMAIL/WEBSITE: The membership is very open to using email, and our website to receive updates and news about club activities. SOCIAL MEDIA: A lesser number of members would like to be able to receive these updates through Social Media, such as Facebook.

ONLINE VIEWING & PAYING: The membership reports strong support for online viewing and paying options.

Conclusion: The HYC Membership strongly believes the Youth Programs are vital to the health and future of the Club and to Boating.

o Interestingly, Member satisfaction declines as the # of days the member dines in the grille increases. o Also, the negative satisfaction scores by Female members is 30% while Females make up 15% of the respondents.

The HYC Mission Statement is STRONGLY embraced by the

Membership.

“The object of this organization shall be the promotion of

opportunities for its membership to participate in all aspects of

the sport of yachting and to associate with others of like interest”

• The Hampton Yacht Club is a large Non-Profit Social Organization,

with several millions of dollars in Assets, Income and Expenses

annually.

• This organization is led and run by a large number of volunteers and

a small professional paid staff.

Hampton Yacht Club’s reputation as a very active Yacht club is well founded.

• Over 63% of the membership engages in some form of boating.

• These Members average 42 days a year on the water.

• Over 76% of those boaters’ race sailboats.

• Approximately 1/3 of the membership keep a boat at HYC.

• The VAST majority of the membership engages in Social Activities at HYC.

• The Membership supports a strong Junior Sailing Program.

• The current average age of the HYC Member is stable.

• The membership of HYC has shown a small net growth over the past 16 years.

• A significant number, 41%, of the members live more than 20 minutes from the

Club. A small number, 7%, of members live more than 50 miles from the Club.
