Chaplins Corner Brothers, Once again the celestial bell has tolled for one of our own. Brother George A. Brown passed on April 24th after a sudden injury. He is a Brother from the United Kingdom and has been a staunch supporter of all the Lodges in the 18th Masonic District. He is survived by his wife Doreen and his children and grandchildren. Please keep all his family in your prayers and thoughts
during this time of tragedy. The family has requested that the memorial service for Brother George be post-poned until October when all their friends will return from the UK and everyone can be there for him.
We recently found out quite by accident that another of our Brothers had passed. Brother Arthur Miller Jr was tragically lost on March 15th in a car wreck. Please keep his family in your prayers and reach out to them in this time of need. Brothers, please if you know of anyone that has passed please let us know so that we may honor them with a Masonic service. Let your family know of your desires for a Masonic service be-fore you pass. It will be much easier on them to care for you. Brothers, the charity this month is Goodwill Industries, and we hope you will contribute freely to its support.
A Little Bit of Trivia
Brethren, I thought it would be fun to share some interesting facts about Masonry.
Did You Know...
At one time, Golden Lodge #5 straddled the boundary between Canada and the United States. There
were entrances on both sides of the border.
Washington Chapter #3 of N.H. announced its meetings via the town crier, who received from 6 to 25
cents per week.
Bernard Pierre Mangam was appointed Grand Master of the Grand Orient of France from 1862 to
1865. This is unusual because he was not a Mason. He was appointed by Emperor Napoleon III.
In 1860 in Limerick, Ireland, a large stone was found in a chapel, dated 1517, with the following in-
scription: I will serve to live with love & care, upon the level, and by the square.
Operative Lodge #150 in Aberdeen Scotland is unusual in that it is only open to operative stonemasons.
In Fascist Spain under Franco, it was a crime to be a Freemason. Masons convicted had to serve prison
terms equal in years to the number of Masonic degrees possessed.
All four Presidents of the Republic of Texas, David Burnett, Sam Houston, Mirabeau Lamar, and An
son Jones, were Masons. (Continued on page 4)

(Continued from page 3)
On November 10, 1928, the Grand Lodge of California held a special communication at Culver City to
lay the corner stone of the Masonic Temple. The lodge room was so crowded that the Grand Lodge
officers were unable to enter. They retired to the ladies' powder room to open the Grand Lodge for the
ceremony.
In 1799, Barton Lodge in Canada accepted good merchantable wheat in payment of lodge dues.
Brother William Brockmeier (1866-1947) of St Louis conducted 5,586 Masonic Funerals.
Thomas Jacob Shryock served as grand master of Maryland for 32 years. He died after being elected to
serve his 33rd term.
On June 7, 1921, Mystic Lodge #21 of N.J., conferred half of the MM degree on brother Lyman C. Van
when the power went out. He didn't receive the rest of the degree for several weeks, making him for a
time, a two and half degree mason.
The two structures in the U.S. that have elevators that move sideways in addition to up and down are
the Arch in St. Louis and the George Washington Memorial in Alexandria.
Montana's first livestock brand was a square and compasses and is still in use today. It was registered
in 1872.
Grand Masters generally have the power to make Masons at sight, which means the Masters can do away with the formalities such as filing of petitions, waiting periods, etc. Some famous Masons who
were made include: William Taft, General George Marshall, and General Douglas MacArthur.
Lodges in Massachusetts have no numbers.
In Pennsylvania there are 11 lodges that have numbers but no names.
In Georgia there are two lodges with the number 1.
In Maryland, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania there is no lodge with the number 1.
Angelo Soliman, was born in Africa in 1721 and brought to Europe as a slave at the age of ten. He was
educated, married, and became a favorite in the royal court in Vienna. Somewhere in 1771 he became
a Mason. When he died in 1776, the Emperor had his body stuffed and mounted in the natural history
museum, becoming not only the first black of African birth to become a Mason, but also the first Ma-
son to be stuffed, mounted, and displayed.
John Aasen of California was the largest known MM ever raised. At the time he was 8.5 feet tall and
weighed 536 pounds.
Charles Stratton. AKA Tom Thumb, was 24 inches high and weighed 16 pounds when raised in 1862.
Brethren, I hoped you enjoyed reading these unusual and somewhat humorous facts about our
fraternity

Brothers, We need sponsors for the Trestle Board! So far the response has been very thin. The sponsors pay for the mailing cost of the printed version. The Lodge absorbs the cost of printing but as you all know, the cost of postage is going up all the time now. Please help us out by sponsoring us for a year. It is $20.00 for the entire year or any portion of it. Our Trestle Board is one that is seen all over the state and hopefully one you can be proud to have your name on. Thank you for your support. We still have approximately 23 Brothers who have not paid their 2014 Lodge dues. Brothers, this is needed income to run this Lodge! Those 23 repre-sent $2300.00 that we do not have to run the Lodge and keep the lights on. I will be sending out late no-tices to those Brothers who have not paid their dues. If you have paid and I am in error, I sincerely apolo-gize. When the dues start rolling in, in December, I usually get 20-30 a day and it seems like when I am the busiest, someone wants to come in the office and shoot the breeze and I miss a ledger entry! Brothers I do love each of you and enjoy talking to you and hearing about what is going on in your lives but the other Brothers deserve my undivided attention when I am posting their dues moneys to the ledger. I am in the office on Tuesdays and Fridays 10:00AM un-til 3:00PM and will be happy to see anyone during that time, but if you see me dealing with checks and dues cards, please just wait a few until Im done and I will be happy to take care of you or listen as long as you want to talk. The Lodge office will be closed on May 26, 27, 28 due to all the officers attending the Grand Lodge Communication. We will open again on Fri-day the 30th. If you have any questions or items you want taken care of at Grand Lodge, please see me and I will attempt to help in any way possible. I am certain that somewhere at Grand Lodge, Someone will be able to answer any questions that arise about Masonry or the Grand Lodge. To go along with the above requests for help Brothers, I want to remind you all that we have a breakfast and dinner each month as a fundraiser for the Lodge and next month is our annual Masters BBQ which is the biggest fundraiser we hold all year. I sincerely hope that you will all attend as many of these as possible and support your Lodge.
Thank you Brothers for allowing me to serve as your Secretary.
From the West
Bro. Ron Glover
Hello Brothers,
I hope this month's Trestle Board finds you all
well. This year is continuing to fly by. Can you believe
we're already a third of the way through 2014?
This year continues to be a busy and productive
year. The line officers have been busy practicing our
work for some upcoming degrees. We have a FC de-
gree that looks to be coming up in a few months. We've
already had an EA Degree this year where we wel-
comed new Brother, Jerry Hall, and we're not only
practicing for the upcoming FC degree but we're in the
process of practicing for another EA Degree as well
that is scheduled for May 9th at 6:30 PM. Hope we can
see everybody there.
I would like to take this time to thank W: Jim
Campbell, our SW, for the great dinners we've had so
far this year. Not only the Sunday dinners but also the
meals that he has implemented before our meetings. He
has put a lot of time, effort, and hard work into it and
the food and the fellowship has been enjoyable.
Thank you again to all the Brothers for your
compliments and advice. We have been practicing hard
and want to make sure we get our work right. It's im-
portant to us.

Greetings from the South. As the position of one who calls the craft from Labor to Refresh-
ment and Refreshment to Labor it is the responsi-
bility of the Junior Warden to oversee the function
of the kitchen and refreshments for the craft. The
idea of refreshments as part of the Lodge meeting
is an old concept. This position is therefore re-
sponsible for meeting meals and refreshments but
also other food events.
Sadly we have not had as good a response as we
had hoped for the pre-meeting meal. Therefore
starting in May we will be serving a pre meeting
meal only at the second meeting of the month. This
coming month will then have a pre meal at the May
20th stated meeting.
As the South is charged with food/refreshment fund
raising we would appreciate the brothers support
for our two other meal functions. These are the
first Saturday Breakfasts (eggs, sausage, bacon, po-
tatoes, pancakes, waffles, juice, coffee, & tea) for
only $6.00 and our Second Sunday Dinners for
only $9.00. The dinner will have various menus with two choices of meat or main dishes.
This coming month, our Breakfast will be on May
3rd and the Dinner will be on May 11 (Mothers Day). Our Mothers day menu will be a choice of Flank Steak Pinwheels or Parmesan Baked
Chicken, vegetables, potatoes, salad, drinks and
deserts. There will be flowers for your lady as a
way of saying thanks for all that you do for us as
wives, mothers, friends, and partners. Bring your
lady out for a good meal on her special day.
Other major food events will be the Masters Bar-beque on June 21 with pulled chicken and pulled
pork. Also in June there will be no Breakfast as the
second Sunday is the next day. Our Second Sun-
day dinner for June will have a choice of Chicken
Masala or Salisbury Steak.
It takes a lot of funds to keep this lodge open and
functioning. These meal events help our operating
budget immensely. We do appreciate your support
and comments so that we can serve you in the best
possible manner.

Henry Mason Wheeler,
1854-1930
Henry Wheeler was a mem-ber of Social Lodge #48 of
Northfield, Minnesota. On September 7, 1876 he was home on vacation from a medical school that he was attending in Michigan. He was in his fa-thers drug store when he noticed three desperados ride up to the bank. They were joined by several others and Henry concluded that they were there to rob the bank. Henry shouted to the townspeople, Get your guns boys. Theyre robbin the bank! It was the Jesse James Gang and this was the begin-ning of the end for them. Henry found a rifle and a shootout between the gang and the townspeople ensued. Henry managed to shoot and kill outlaw Clell Miller. He also wounded outlaw Bob Younger who managed to get away. Henry later explained to the Sheriff that he was in medical school and needed to provide a cadaver to his school for ex-amination so that he could graduate. He asked for a body of one of the outlaws but was turned down. The Sheriff said to him that he would not break the law, but I will see that the outlaws are buried plenty shallow. A few days later Henry shipped a barrel labeled pickles to himself at school. It smelled strongly of formaldehyde. Go figure. Henry
graduated from medical school and moved to Grand
Forks, North Dakota in 1881. He became a member
of Acacia Lodge # 15 of the Grand Lodge of Da-
kota Territory and was elected as Master of that
Lodge for three terms starting in 1883. In 1887 he
was elected the Grand Master of Masons of the Da-
kota Territory. Henry led a life with many varied
interests. He had the first automobile in Grand
Forks. He invented a forerunner of the snowmobile
with skis and a sail. He was elected mayor of Grand
Forks for two terms in 1917. Henry was also presi-
dent of the Grand Forks Gun Club (You should
have guessed). Henry was a two time widower and
married a third time in 1923. In 1925 his wife pre-
sented 71 year old Henry with a healthy baby boy.
He responded by going to town and raising the
courthouse flag. In his excitement, he raised the
flag upside down, a universal sign of distress.
Henry Mason Wheeler died on April 13, 1930. He
was given full Masonic honors in Grand Forks ND
and also in Northfield, MN where he is buried.

A NEW SIGN
A young Entered Apprentice was being examined as to
his proficiency in the Entered Apprentice Degree. After
he had finished, he looked at his instructor and said, "I
noticed several of the older members sticking their fin-
gers in their ears and whistling. Is that a sign that I
missed something? What does that sign mean?"
"That's not a sign," his instructor said, "those are old
Past Masters adjusting their hearing aids."
You Might Be a Freemason If...
...you start calling major historical figures Brother
...you answer everything with, "Are you on the level?"
...you secretly practice shaking hands with yourself
...you only blow out the candles on the north side of
your birthday cake.
...you recently had your home rotated to face the East
...you only drink light beer
...you refer to your iron lawn jockey as the Tyler
you have started singing Pleyels Hymn in the
