2014 CENTRAL SQUASH ASSOCIATION INC. ANNUAL REPORT

PRESIDENT’S REPORT Grant Smith – President

It is with pleasure I present this, the president’s report for the 49th annual general meeting of Central Squash, or Squash Central as we are now branded. This is the new brand and name which falls into line with Squash New Zealand and the eleven other districts. It has certainly been a great year for Squash Central on all fronts. With a cemented committee and administration, the District was at a cross roads 18-24 months ago and had no choice but to look ahead, rebuild its base and plan for the future. This is now starting to show results.

Off the Court We have continued with our District Plan and achieved the following:• Continuing our Development plan with

emphasis on growing the game and base of players at school, junior and club entry levels. With an extra emphasis on Taranaki and Wanganui clubs.

• TheDistrictfinancesandbudgetarewithin Xero software in the Cloud which has improved our robustness in this area. Althoughwehavemadeafinanciallossforthe year, this is really on the back of less Trust funding.

• During the year we ran well supported Senior and Junior Prince Players’ series as well as a successful District Open, Junior and Masters Championships.

• We have improved District Income although Trust funding declined. We also established some excellent commercial partnerships with Inspire Net, MacDougalls Rural Services and Prince.

• And we grew overall Central club membership by 6% or 135 members across the District.

The incoming committee will now need to review the District plan and set new goals for the 2015 season and beyond.

Playing AchievementsOn the competitive or playing front, Central’s players and clubs had much success, possibly our best in many years, including...• Massey student, Rebecca Barnett being

selected for the New Zealand senior women’s team to play in the World Championships.

• The Central women’s rep team was unbeateninall2014fixturesandwontheprized NZ Inter-Districts Teams event.

• Tararua’s Luke Jones won the New Zealand

Junior Boys U19 title.• Kaitlyn Watts, Luke Jones, Corbin Faint,

Emily Nash and Courtney Trail either won New Zealand age group, Oceania titles or made New Zealand junior squads during the 2014 season.

• In the Masters ranks, Palmerston North’s Mike McSherry won the New Zealand 45-49 age group title.

• Four National SuperChamps titles to Ohakune and SquashGym clubs.

• Andmanyplayers, teamsandofficialswere honoured at regional sports awards in Taranaki, Wanganui and Manawatu.

A full list of highlights, honours board and season results are on page 24 onwards in this report.

Many ThanksI would like to thank the people that manage and govern our district, including our Central committee, especially our administrator Pauline Slovak, Treasurer Rob Brownrigg, and District Captain Marilyn Dolan as well as the other portfolio convenors. You are the glue that keeps Squash Central running smoothly.

In SummaryAs a district, in 2015 we celebrate 50 years as an organisation. I hope this is acknowledged or celebrated in some way and will be encouraging the Life Members and incoming District committee to advance this in some form.Central continues to provide a good range of facilities through a mix of city and rural communitybasedclubs, wearefinanciallysound, are growing the game and have development plans in place. We foster good relationships with our stakeholders and funders, and above all, we have great people at all levels running the game. But there is still much more to do, and plenty more potential, as our District bats above it’s weight contributing strongly to the national level of our sport. Finally, I would like to acknowledge all that contributed throughout the district, whether you are a club administrator, coaching juniors, opening and maintaining your club facilities or representing your club or Central on the court. Thank you for making 2014 an excellent year for Central Squash.

Grant Smith - President

2014 CENTRAL SQUASH ASSOCIATION INC. ANNUAL REPORT

DEVELOPMENT MANAGER/DISTRICT COACH REPORT Coaching & Development In an extremely busy year I can say there has been many positives and the district as a whole appears to be working a lot more cohesively and I look forward to taking this one step further in 2015. Coach Force In 2014 we were able to deliver a number of modules through-out the district. Although attendance was lower than previous years. We have been successful again with funding to assist with the module delivery in 2015. Modules now available:

• Safety Concepts & Get Started (Online via Squash NZ website) • Get Started 1 • Small Nix 2 and 2a • Big Nix 3 and 3a • How to Coach • Women’s • Hydration and Nutrition

A district workshop was hosted this year by SquashGym which included coaching and club development. Thanks to Wesley Clarke from Sport Manawatu for your assistance here. Schools programmes continued through-out the district in various forms – School programmes are a critical link back to club junior programmes. Thanks to Sally Stantiall, Peter Mischefski Kaye Elliott and Pete Arnott for their work in the schools area. Zone Squads 2014 was the introduction of 3 Zone Squads for promising Juniors

• Taranaki • Wanganui • Manawatu

These squads are a starting point for developing a wider base of junior talent across the district. After a strong start the programme stalled later in the season as the tournaments and Junior events peaked making it difficult to find suitable dates for trainings. Over 70 players where involved in the Zone squads which is a good sign moving forward for the district. Thanks to Peter Mischefski, Kaye Elliot, Janet Andrews, Rod Bannister, Sally Stantiall, Grants Watts, John Keenan and Pete Arnott plus all the other supporting coaches that were involved in the programme. 2015 Goals

• 16 SNZ Module Deliveries • 2 Coaching Workshops/Conferences • Coach Mentoring Programme • 100 + School Sessions • Continuation of Junior Zone Squads

Finally a big thank you to all the coaches out there that have helped players of all levels throughout the year, your input is extremely valuable and keep up the good work. Jason Fletcher – Development Manager/District Coach

• Injury Management• Conditioning• Kiwi Squash Club and School• Club Youth• Adult Starters Club• Squash Start

2014 CENTRAL SQUASH ASSOCIATION INC. ANNUAL REPORT

HIGH PERFORMANCE REPORT Wow what a year! National Champions in the Women’s team event, National U23 Women’s Champion, Winners of the Newbigin Shield and Wairarapa Cup plus a National Junior title and both Most Improved Junior Boy and Girl from our group of Central High Performance (HP) players. Into our third year of our HP programme and we continued to move forward in the right direction with some excellent results. This year our HP programme saw our players involved in a squad camp at the start of the year, two One Day rep fixtures, a group squad trip to the Central Open and the New Zealand Nationals. The aim was to continue building up our depth, make sure Central Squash is up with the top districts around the country and continued along with the ‘Team culture’ of good work ethics and team competition amongst players.

• 1st HP Camp was held in March. It was great to see numbers were up from the previous year’s camp. This year it was staged at Squashgym and the Massy track over a Friday/Saturday and was a productive camp.

• Our first One Day clash was with Squash Eastern for the “Newbigin Shield” and saw us travel to Hastings. We won convincingly for a third year in a row, 18 matches to 6. On paper we were down in firepower a bit but we blooded a few new players and they all stepped up, especially the women who won all their 12 matches on offer.

• The Central Open this year saw our HP squad attend the tournament as a group trip. It was great to be able to have everyone travel and train lightly on the Friday, then launch into tournament mode. It was good for our management and selectors group to see our players in tournament mode and also 6 weeks out from Nationals.

• The second One Dayer saw the inaugural “Wairarapa Cup” played for against Squash Wellington in Palmerston North. Myself, Grant Smith and Central Squash have donated a Cup to provide a bit more to these clashes as there is some rich history between the two districts. We won for the first time in three years again 18 matches to 6 with many of the named Central Squad for NZ Nationals having a good hit out.

• NZ Nationals = AWESOME! NATIONAL WOMENS TEAM CHAMPIONS!

It was a proud moment to be Central! Our Women’s team of Becky Barnett, Danielle Fourie, Jackie Tapp, Kaitlyn Watts, Rebecca Clifford and the Men’s team of Kashif Shuja, Ben Calvert, Jason van der Walt, Stephen Bennett, Brandon Keenan all produced outstanding results. Leading up to the event Kashif had the squad training and playing a number of days in a row to simulate 5 days of competition that they would be facing at Nationals. This showed that we were the best-prepared team there. It was the best team environment since I have been involved in over the last 3yrs and credit goes out to all our players who put their bodies on the line for 5 days in a row of competition. In the end 8 out of the 10 played the maximum number of games (7 to 8 matches!). We actually had 9 of our players playing finals on the last day of individuals. Seven of those won their matches. Kashif finished 4th in the Men’s Open, Danielle 5th, Becky 6th & Kaitlyn 17th (Plate) in the Women’s Open. Kaitlyn was unreal as she knocked over four A graders after being seeded 28th. Jason & Rebecca were runner-ups in Div. 1 & Brandon Plate winner in Div. 1.

2014 CENTRAL SQUASH ASSOCIATION INC. ANNUAL REPORT

As you know the teams event was fantastic with the women winning the title for the first time in the history of the event (42 years it’s been going). They were seeded 3rd and knocked over Canterbury the 2nd seeds in the semi-final 3/1 with Jackie on last coming back from 8-3 down in the 5th set to clinch it. In the Final they beat the top seeds Auckland 3/1 with Kaitlyn getting the team off to a great start by beating her 5th A grader of the competition, this actually put her to A grade and join other elite NZ players to do this at the age of 13! Danielle then put the team 2 matches up winning easy and Becky signed the deal off by beating one of NZ’s top juniors 3/1. Jackie lost the dead rubber against a NZ masters rep 3/1. The men’s team which had four new players in it from last year also stood up big time, guys came off the court and dropped to the ground, but had dug deep for themselves, the team and to show everyone that Central meant business. After being seeded 7th (last) and losing 1st round, they beat Eastern the 6th seeds, then Waikato the 5th seeds in the plate final 155 to 151 on points. A huge thanks on behalf of myself, Kashif & Grant Watts for the Central board to continue to back our HP programme. I/we are keen to make our District stand tall with more titles in the future. I feel the heart of it comes back to the programme and hard yards we are doing back here. Along with the players buy in and with Kashif’s expertise and knowledge as a five-time New Zealand champion, to have him training the player’s daily it has been the backbone to this win - we just can't get anybody of his caliber so I feel we are very lucky as a district. Also Grant Watts, the women's coach does a massive job with the team behind the scenes and on game day for me. With both of these guys on board it makes my job easy. It has been a fantastic year and our management group looks forward to continue to push our players towards the top individually and as a team. Other districts are in awe of what is now happening here with Central and we have only just started. We will continue to grow our depth and will tap into the group of B graders that are appearing in the Taranaki region. Next year we plan to have a similar format with the new addition of a third One Day venture where we will host Waikato in what will be a first between the two districts. We look forward to keeping Central moving forward and with a number of players moving to our region this will only encourage our HP programme players into performing at their best, as there is certainly competition amongst players now. With what our HP programme is offering I hope that the winning culture, which we are creating, will continue. This will only happen if our players continue to buy in and do the hard yards, individually and as a team. Let’s bring more titles home in the future! Kent Darlington – High Performance Director & Senior Team Convenor

2014 CENTRAL SQUASH ASSOCIATION INC. ANNUAL REPORT

DISTRICT CAPTAIN’S REPORT Another year has been and gone with some great results. District Challenges: This year we again played Eastern & Wellington in both the seniors and the juniors with great results all round. The seniors played Wellington for a new trophy, ‘The Wairarapa Cup’ which they managed to win and add to their trophy cabinet. The juniors also had a successful season. These results will be covered under their respective reports. Interclub: Both zones have done well numbers wise this year. Taranaki hold an autumn and spring competition to start and finish the season, this year they had 22 teams playing overall. Their graded competition had 23 Men’s and 16 Ladies teams competing with some impressive results. They also held a junior interclub, which was enjoyed by the young up and comers. MWR zone started the season with the Masters where there were 17 men’s teams and 16 ladies playing. As we don’t seem to have enough ladies to make club teams we play as individuals. The 2nd round has 16 men’s teams and 30 ladies playing. A great turnout. Maybe we can go back to club teams in the future. This competition is run where each division is played at the same venue each week plus a finals night. Graded competition had 27 men’s teams and 7 ladies teams. The men’s teams were in large divisions with a wide range of grades so made for a long competition. This again was thankfully sponsored by MacDougalls Rural Supplies enabling the zone to give out prizes to the winning teams again. Interclub Winners for 2014 were: Taranaki: MWR: Men’s Div 1 Okato Defenders Div 1 Wanganui #1 Div 2 Kawaroa Park Devils Div 2 Tararua #2 Div 3 Patea Div 3 River City #2 Ladies Div 1 Kawaroa Park Divas Div 1 Rangitikei Div 2 Inglewood Wasps Premier interclub was held in the MWR Zone with only 5 teams participating. The winning team for 2014 was “Stevos’ River City” team and they took out the Radio More FM Trophy. The Inspire Net Central Players Series was held in the second half of the year with 6 teams, the winners of this competition were Higgins contractors team. District Interclub Play-offs: These were again played at Hawera Squash club. With only 3 mens divisions in each zone it made for a short event. Was great to see a new club represented, well-done Patea. Many of these matchup going to the wire. Winners were – Mens 1 – Okato Defenders, Mens 2 – KP Devils, Mens 3 – River City #2. Ladies – KP Divas. J Grade Prince Series: Well done to all of the juniors that played in this competition, there were some great matchups through the series. Winners were: Boys: 1st Sameed Khan (WG), 2nd Matt Adshead (PN) 3rd George Mikklesen (PN) Girls: 1st Eilish Oliver (AP), 2nd Genevieve Bell (PN) 3rd Molly Stantiall (RG)

2014 CENTRAL SQUASH ASSOCIATION INC. ANNUAL REPORT

iSQUASH ADMINISTRATORS REPORT This year saw the implementation of the combined male/female-grading list. This caused a few hic-ups to start with, with names that could be male or female, being put into mixed draws. This has since been sorted with players adding Miss / Ms / Mrs / Mr in front of their name. On a whole the system has worked well, especially when slotting ladies into a male draw for tournaments in the higher divisions. These matches have proved to end up being evenly matched. SNZ has also upgraded their system during the year for the inputting of results, which now makes it very easy to follow. Their tournament module now has a 6 draw available, this has been the bug for a lot of clubs not being able to do all of their draws with this module. More and more clubs are now advertising their tournaments on the SNZ website, making it easy for out of district players to enter tournaments. My only problem this year has been club administrators applying for codes for new players with not all information attached. Please get that middle name or initial, it makes it so much easier, and saves me contacting that player for this information. I would like to thank all those club administrators that have been doing their clubs’ isquash work and for all the hard work that they have had to do. It can be very frustrating at times trying to get information out of some players. Keep up the good work. For those who will be handing this job over, thank you for your time and patience with me at times. Marilyn Dolan – District iSquash Administrator

MASTERS REPORT Well Squash Central didn’t quite keep up with our seeding ( seeded 6th overall) we played off for the Consolation plate against Northland ( seeded 8th ) in an 8 draw format. We beat Northland 6 matches to 4 to end up 7th . Earlier we had lost 8/2 to Southland ( 3rd seed) in the first round, and then 7/3 by Waikato ( 7th seed) in the 2nd round Originally the draws were made in two pools of four , but this was mutually amended by the teams at the pre teams managers meeting held after the individuals, this resulted in only three ties being played instead of four. Leading up to the Masters, Central suffered two major setbacks losing both Kashif Shuja (Mens 35+) and Rod Bannister (Mens 45+) to injury, both of those players were expected to win their respective National Age group titles this year ( in Rods case he would have been defending his last years title). We were lucky to be able to call on Victor Romero ( 35+) to take Kashif’s place, and Brent Foster made himself available at the last minute to take Rods place, both local players, and were playing in the Teams event for the first time ( Brent was nursing a lower back injury which saw him unable to play in the final round.) Central were fortunate to have the experience of Mickayla Kerr ( Womens 35+) she had just moved to Palmerston North from Wellington which gave much needed strength to the women’s team, she was also very active on the coaching front during other members games, giving excellent advice and reading the game well. Looking at the Stats …….girls won 7 matches and the boys won 4! The team composition was :- WOMEN Mikayla Kerr SquashGym Kaye Elliott Kawaroa Park Sherryl Curtis SquashGym Gael Win Kawaroa Park Janice Trevathan Kawaroa Park Reserves Sally Stantiall Rangitikei Jill Brown SquashGym MEN Victor Romero Squash Gym Jason Fletcher Squash Gym Brent Foster SquashGym Mark Gunning SquashGym Pete Souness Kawaroa Park Reserve Mike Jack (Manager) Kawaroa Park I would like to thank all the Central Masters teams players who represented Squash Central this year. And.... to those of us who will be turning 60 or are in the 60 + category don’t give up as that category will be added to the teams format for 2015. Just remember 60 is the new 21!!!!!!! And thank you Pauline for helping me and assisting with those last minute issues. Mike Jack - Central Masters Manager

2014 CENTRAL SQUASH ASSOCIATION INC. ANNUAL REPORT

JUNIOR CONVENOR’S REPORT This year has been a very long and extremely busy season, with the first event kick starting in early January for some of our High Performance Juniors. The Oceania Junior Trans Tasman event this year played in Brisbane Australia.

With this event being held so early, training for these juniors started in November 2013. Central had 3 juniors selected by Squash New Zealand to participate, Luke Jones, Corbin Faint and Kaitlyn Watts. Corbin and Kaitlyn had an outstanding tournament, and came away Oceania Champions for their respective age groups. A fantastic start to a busy Squash season for these players.

While the High Performance Juniors carried on training, Junior Zone Squads got off to a great start with over 70 players across the district participating in the first coaching camps held in the 3 zones across the district. These Juniors met once a month right through to September, with head coaches Grant Watts, Rod Bannister and Pete Mischefski reporting back with great enthusiasm and excited by the talent we have within our district.

The Junior Prince Series also got under way early in the season, with a good amount of up and coming juniors competing in the series. After 13 Prince series events, the top 8 boys and top 8 Girls for 2014 were decided and 5 coaching scholarships drawn.

The first of our Junior District Representative fixtures against Eastern was held in Palmerston North on March 16th. This was an Age Group event with two boys and two girls selected from each age group.

Team as follows:

Boys Under 11 Tristin Peeti-Webber (DV) Daniel Mabey (TR) Under 13 Connor Fortuin (SPN) Daegan Love (KP) Under 15 James Van Kerhoff (WG) Corbin Faint (SPN) Under 17 Cameron Foster (SPN) Blake Koolen (SPN) Under 19 Luke Jones (SPN/TR) Brandon Keenan (SPN)

Girls Under 11 Abbie Holmes (HW) Abby Treder (TR) Under 13 Annaleise Faint (SPN) Sophie Bell (SPN) Under 15 Gina Bailey (SPN) Ansley Koolen (SPN) Under 17 Courtney Trail (SPN) Tori Claridge (SPN) Under 19 Emily Nash (SPN) Kaitlyn Watts (SPN) This year we can celebrate again with Central winning 26-14 matches. North Island Juniors were contested in Hamilton during July, with many of our HP Juniors competing for titles. Central managed to get two titles this year. Courtney Trail winning the Under 15 Girls event and Luke Jones showing form to take the Under 19 Boys Title, just two weeks before heading out to Namibia to represent New Zealand in the Junior Boys World Teams and Individual Events. Jones is the first boy selected from Central Region in many years, and is a fine example of the High Performance Programme available to the players in our region for both Juniors and Seniors. Without this we would be struggling for results on the court and we are now the envy of many districts when we travel to National events.

the top two graded Junior Boys and Junior Girls in the Central and Wellington Districts (grading as at 31 May, which is the same as Super Champs). This is not an Age Group Event, which meant we got a wider spread of juniors throughout the district, as we are concerned that most of the regions HP juniors are coming out of Palmerston North. Junior National Age Groups is the last junior event on the Squash Calendar, and by October many of the juniors were ready for the last big push before a well-earned break. A large contingent of Central Juniors travelled to Remuera to compete in the Individual event. Again we had some fantastic results, both in the Individual Age group events and the Teams event. Luke Jones capped off a great 2014 season when the PNBHS student took out the NZ Junior boy’s title. He won the final beating fellow NZ teammate Chapman Kutia from Gisborne in a tough four sets. Jones has come through an incredibly tough summer of training towards selection for the New Zealand Junior Boys' team that travelled to the World Junior Championships in Namibia. His improvement saw him soar up the grading list, well into A grade and achieve selection in the final team of four players. His fine season is now capped off with this victory in the boys' Under 19 national championships. The 'Most Improved awards' went to Kaitlyn Watts and Luke Jones again - both of SquashGym Palmerston North. Watts, at 13, is the country's youngest A Grader. Her determination and work ethic are a shining example to players of all ages, and if her rapid rate of improvement continues she will be a valuable asset for New Zealand Squash in the years to come. Annaleise Faint, also of SquashGym played extremely well and made her way to the Under 13 Girls final. Annaleise is another junior who has made massive improvements to her game throughout the year, which has shown as she has finished with a ranking of 2nd in the Under 13 Girls.

The Teams event followed the individuals with our Boys seeded 2nd out of the 9 districts. After convincingly winning their Pool Play, the boys made it into the final against a very strong and determined BOP Team. The Bay team consisted of 4 A Graders, and took the title for a 3rd year running. The Girls plagued by injury saw their seeding drop from 2nd to 5th. The remaining squad members did well beating Northland in the play off for 5th and 6th.

MANAWATU - WANGANUI - RUAPEHU ZONE REPORT The zone has had a very busy and successful interclub season, with the financial backing from McDougall’s rural service and supplies. Many thanks to Brett McDougall for his continued support this season. Marilyn has once again done a wonderful job in organizing and entering the draws for this competition, a huge and often thankless task. Thank you Marilyn for the many hours that you dedicate to doing this task. Many players commented that they enjoy having a host club for “finals night” where all players from a division are at the one club; this helps to foster the wonderful social side of our sport. A Zone meeting date for 2015 will be set and published early in the new year, so please ensure that your club has the correct contact information with the Central Secretary to make sure that you have the opportunity to be involved in the zone happenings over the season. We look forward to seeing you there! Sally Stantiall – MWR Zone President TARANAKI ZONE REPORT Waitara will be kicking off a junior programme next year with some help and we now have a contact at Waitara High School who is keen to get something happening with KiwiSquash in the school. Inglewood Squash continues to tick along with about 96 members – they are a very proactive club with some good members who work tirelessly for that club. I only attended one of their committee meetings this year and they’re pretty sorted. Kawaroa Park has had a very busy year with good membership numbers and junior memberships are increasing as well. We will be hosting the Squash Central Open again in 2015 and look forward to making this a great tournament as per usual! Sylvia Penny – Taranaki Zone Representative

FINANCIAL REPORT Rob Brownrigg – Treasurer

Another extremely busy year for Central Squash and while playing results have been nothing shortofspectacularthefinancialresulthasbeensomewhatdisappointingwithalossof$9,715 recorded.Total income was up approximately $8,000 on 2013 – mainly due to income from Kiwisport andsponsorship.ThiswaspartiallyoffsetbyareductioninincomefromGrantsandDonations whereby we were down approximately $12,000 on the previous year. Worth noting thatthe2013figurewasupstronglyfromthepreviousyearbutunfortunatelylikemostsportsourfinancialsuccessisheavilyreliantonthisasasourceofincome.Anecdotalevidencesuggests other districts receive considerably more than Central Squash and we must work hard to ensure we receive our share going forward. While overall an increase in income was pleasing we did see a large increase in expenditure which contributed to the loss. On a positive note we have spent a considerably more on coaching throughout 2014 and this has - and I am sure will continue to - have a positive impact on squash in the region. While slightly more has been spent on High Performance Coaching it is also worth noting we have spent considerable more at the “grass roots” level with Kiwisquash/Coachforce spending up some $12610 on 2013. Also worth noting that while events such as the Prince Series, Superchamps and Champion of Champions are worthy events that are enjoyed and supported by many – they do come at a cost to the district. Important we keep these events going and keep supporting our club players but we may need to look at how they are funded going forward.Apart from Coaching the other major expense item has been the cost of spending teams to the Nationals - as it has been in previous years. With Central hosting the National Masters overallcostsweredownapproximately$4,000on2013.Thekeydifferenceherethoughwasthat in 2013 the cost of sending all 3 teams away was all but covered by grants and players contributions. This year however there was a shortfall of approx $12000. We did also incur some‘oneoff’coststhatwon’tberepeatedin2015.ThisincludesthelastoftheTravelEqualisation payments to Squash NZ of $2969 and cost of rebranding/marketing expenses of approximately $3500.Looking ahead to 2015 I believe it is important we continue to invest in coaching to at all levels. This will not only improve playing ability but contributes greatly to attracting new players and keeping existing players in the game. Ideally we would like to take this up to anotherlevelbutimportantwesecuresufficientfundingtoenableustodothis.WemustalsokeepclosecontrolofexpenseswhichIamconfidentwillgoalongwaytomakingthenext12monthsafinancialsuccess.Thanks again to Grant Smith, Pauline Slovak and all committee members for their hard work and support throughout the year.
