PRESIDENT’S REPORT President -‐ John Laurenson To start I would like to pay tribute to Brick Mathieson who passed away during the year. Brick was one of the district’s five Life Members. He served on Central Squash for ten years and with SNZ for two years. He played a major part in establishing Stratford Squash Club and was a judge for our district awards one year. I would also like to express mine, and the districts, sincere appreciation of the contribution Sharon Patterson has made to the district over the last 16 years in her capacity as administrator/secretary. I wish her replacement Pauline Slovak, all the very best, knowing she has some big shoes to fill. The year has been an interesting one. This time last year I had no intention of being president but, knowing that I would have a little more time on my hands this year, offered to rejoin the Board in the Participation Directors capacity. There seemed to be a move afoot to dispense with the Central Board, with a lack of any other nominations. After a few attempts at special meetings we eventually got going with a combined Board/Committee structure with several new people and set about doing the best we could for the district. There were clearly some things that needed addressing, none the least of which was that the district had made no applications and consequently received no grants in the previous twelve months. I am pleased to say, as the accounts will bear out, we have been successful in applying for funding to the tune of over $10,000 this year and have coaching related funding to the tune of $6700 approved for next year as well. It is a good start back in the right direction. The year has been a busy one for the district with Kawaroa Park hosting a very successful individual and district senior nationals event. This was followed by Squashgym Palmerston North hosting a very successful junior individual and team nationals. We had teams and individuals perform creditably at both these events. Thanks needs to go to Kent Darlington and Di Tasker for their efforts in getting teams to where they did. Whilst the junior teams are essentially in a rebuilding phase, the senior men only narrowly missed winning the national title. Pleasing to see a senior Squash Eastern fixture up and running with the Newbigin Shield back in action after a rest since 1993. Also well done to the juniors, with the development side running out victors over Wellington in the rainbow challenge in Lower Hutt. Luke Jones , Emily Nash, Corbin Faint and Kaitlyn Watts have all been named in the NZ training squad for next year with Kaitlyn the youngest at only 11 years. Disappointing that we were unable to field masters teams again this year and hopefully this can be addressed next year. One of the biggest problems facing our district is the geographical spread. Coming from a small relatively isolated club, I am always keen to state their case. Times are tough for all sports clubs. I held Council of Clubs meetings in both zones but felt splitting it into the zones defeated the whole purpose and would recommend that if next years board have Council of Clubs meetings there should be one meeting for all. I heard the calls from the wider district and am increasingly fearful of what Central is offering the Taranaki and Ruapehu zones.

Our rep fixtures are now alternating in the Manawatu zone and the majority of players are coming out of Squashgym Palmerston. Whilst looking through some old district junior papers from 10 years ago there were over 60 names listed in the 2002 reserve and development squads broken down as follows: Okato 15, Ohakune 13, Rangitikei 5, Squashgym 5, Taihape 4, Feilding 3, Kawaroa Park 3, Dannevirke 3, Waitara 3, Wanganui 2, Hawera 2, Patea 2, Opunake 1, Ashhurst 1. This represented a good spread across the district. There is a real challenge for the incoming Board/Committee to address the current imbalance. Hopefully the coach-‐force funding approved for next year will help. I would like to see Central more directly involved in the main interclub fixtures, paying the fixtures officers for these directly. It is pleasing to know that the zones are heading into 2013 on a relatively co-‐ordinated front with dates already set. The introduction of a national champion of champion’s event this year by New Zealand Squash is a real plus for squash as a sport. I can’t think of any other sport code where national titles can be competed for without being at the very top overall. From a finance point of view my thanks go to Jane Gadsby for her efforts this year and over recent years as she is standing down from the finance directors position. The district is currently in good shape, although it is disappointing that some clubs are particularly tardy paying up their affiliation fees with some still outstanding at the time of printing this. We did have the advantage of having no teams needing to travel outside the district for national events this year. The idea promulgated last year that NZ Squash wanted to take over the districts as such is well and truly not the case. Work has been done on a memorandum of agreement between NZ Squash and Central. This will no doubt be completed and signed off in the near future. I look forwarded positively to squash in the Central region in 2013. Work commitments will prevent me from continuing on as president but I will actively support where possible.

FINANCE DIRECTOR’S REPORT 2012 was a year of rebuilding for Central Squash. After the previous year when nothing financially was achieved, we worked very hard to get funding applications completed and we were successful in attaining $13,000 from various funding agencies. SNZ also had funding available for the coaches count programmes, which were successfully run throughout the district during the year. The year ended with a small deficit of $1,199 (2011 $1,328). Income from affiliation fees and interclub was down slightly from past years but overall income was up due to the grant income. Overall expenses were up this year, the main one being rep expenses which included the purchase of rep gear to cover the district for the next three years. Costs for interclub also increased as we repaid the zones a portion of the interclub costs. The costs for coaching also increased this year as there was a good coaching programme in place for the various rep squads and the coaches count programme was popular as well. Debtors remain at a similar level as last year. Most clubs are prompt at paying their fees but there are always one or two who drag the chain. A monthly AP is always a good way to help with cashflow. Cash reserves are steady at $64,000 ($72,600 last year) which bodes well for the future. After many years as financial director I am standing down from the board this year. It has been an enjoyable (and somewhat challenging at times) job and I wish the board/committee all the best for the upcoming year. Jane Gadsby Finance Director
