MessagefromthePresidentDearMembers,It is my pleasure and privilege to submit this report to you, in concluding myduties to the society as President. The end of the year brings much personalsatisfaction,butalsosomeregret,asIhavetrulyenjoyedtheopportunitytoservetheCanadiantransplantcommunity inthismanner. I lookforwardtocontinuingto connect with the society in other roles, and to helping the CST retain itsleadership in the field, not only in the Canadian context, but globally. Inhighlightingouraccomplishmentsandprogressinthepastyear,I’dliketostartbyfocusingontheAnnualScientificMeeting.TheASMisourprimarydeliverabletothemembershipanditsscientificexcellence,itsnetworkingvalueanditsfinancialviability are key attributes which need regular assessment. This year marks adepartureforusinseveralways.Followingwidespreadconsultationandavoteof
themembershipin2014,theASMhasmovedtothefall.Althoughcompetinginaverybusyseason,thisallowsusgreaterflexibility in choosingnewvenuesandmoreopportunities inpartneringwithother societies, allofwhich translate intobetter value. Our first joint meeting effort has been with the Banff Foundation for Allograft Pathology. The meetingattracted an international delegation of close to 500 and featured a special session co-sponsored with the AmericanSocietyofTransplantation.Withnearly100invitedspeakers,all leadersinthefield,thiswasameetinglikenootherwehaveeverhosted.Thequalityof thesessionswasoutstanding,and Iwould liketoacknowledgetheeffortsofProsantoChaudhuryandJagGill,ChairandCo-chair,respectively,oftheASMCommittee.IwouldalsoliketothankJohnGill,ChairoftheJointOrganizingCommittee,andCSTmemberMichaelMengel,whoalongwithBanffPresidentKimSolez,workedtirelesslytoensurethemeeting’sseamlessintegrationandfinancialsuccess.Thismeetinghasbeenasuccessfulblueprintforthefuture,andI’mhappytoreportthatthe2016and2017meetingswillalsofeaturenovelpartnerships.Nextyear,wewillmeet inQuebecCitywith theSociétéquébecoisede transplantationand in2017,wewill be joinedby theCellTransplantandRegenerativeMedicineSociety,foraoneofakindscientificexperienceinHalifax.Our numbers increased substantially this year, as we welcomed 18 Full Members, 30 Associate Members and 45Trainee/Fellowmembers.The traineenumbersareparticularlyencouraging,given their importance forour future.ThisyearalsomarksthedesignationofMulti-OrganTransplantationasanAreaofFocusedCompetencebytheRoyalCollege,withthefirsteverrecipientsofformalcertificationinourfieldtobeawardedtheirdiplomasinthespring.Thisfollowsamulti-yearefforttobringthisimportantgoaltofruition,andcreditisduetoJustinWeinkaufforhisrepresentationofthesociety to the College and Jolanta Karpinski, who led this effort in the beginning.The CST’s various committees continued their exceptional efforts this year, andwe recognize the time devoted by allmembers in advancing thework of the society. Communications Committee Chair Jag Gill is completing his term, andJeffreySchiffwillbetakingoverthisgroup,whichwillre-examineitsfunctionsandtheformatandcontentofinformationsenttothemembership.JeffreycontinuesasChairoftheEducationCommittee,andwithCo-ChairLeeAnneTibblesthiscommitteewas responsible for theorganizationofanoutstandingResearchFITS symposium.Marie-Chantal Fortin andRebeccaGreenbergcontinueasChairandCo-ChairoftheEthicsCommitteeandrepresenttheCSTontheAd-HocWorkingGroup on Solicitation and Directed Donation. This CST initiative includes representation from CBS and the CNTRP andcontinues toward theproductionofa setofguidelineson this important issue.Othermembersof thegroupareDavidGrant, Todd Fairhead, Jennifer Chandler, Lori West, Linda Wright, Lee Anne Tibbles, Kimberly Young and DavidLandsberg.RameshPrasadandMichelPaquetcontinueasChairandCo-ChairoftheGrantsandAwardsCommitteeand

workingwithJoeKimandSachaDeSerresof theResearchCommittee,willbeadministeringanewgrantthisyear.TheAstellas-CSTClinicalResearchGrantcompetitionwasannouncedduringtheASMandwillprovide$100,000towardnovelclinicalandtranslationalprotocols.TheGovernanceandNominationsCommitteewasbusythisyearrecruitinganewslateofmembersstandingforelectionasDirectors,amongtheirothervitalworkontheCST’snumerousby-lawsandpolicies.We thankTomBlydt-Hansen,who is completinghis termasChairof this committee.Dr. Ebi Renner steppeddownasChair of the Leading Clinical Practices Committee and is replaced in this capacity by Co-Chair Yaron Avitzur. CareyBeningercompletestwoverysuccessfultermsasChairoftheStandardsCommittee.Theworkofallcommitteesandgroupswasenhancedthisyearbythedeploymentofanewcontentmanagementsystemandwebsite.Thenewsiteallowsallgroupsandcommitteestomanagetheirmemberships,communicateandstorefilesandinformation.Ithasenabledustoconductourelectionselectronicallyandhandlesmembershiprenewalandabstractsubmission.ThesiterepresentsanenormouseffortbyHollyFanandwegratefullyacknowledgehercontribution,whichhastrulyrevolutionizedthewayCSTfunctions.Iampleasedtoreportthatthefinancialoutlookofthesocietyhasimprovedgreatlythisyear.Wehavehadtomakethedifficultdecisionofofferingourfellowshiponlyonalternateyears,butthecombinedrevenuesfromourvarioussponsorsaswell as theanticipated revenues from the joint scientificmeetingwith theBanff Foundationhave contributed toaneliminationofourbudgetdeficitthisyear.Togivesomeperspective,inourfinalyearwiththeRoyalCollege,werecordedadeficitofover$100,000.Recognizingthatwecannotaffordtobecomplacentinthisfavourableposition,weproducedour first ever Investment Policy Statement, and recruited investment managers at BMO Nesbitt Burns to act as ourfinancial advisors. We are truly grateful for the diligent efforts ofDavid Grant, our two-term Treasurer, who led thedevelopmentoftheinvestmentstrategyandthecarefulexaminationoftheoptionsavailabletous.The end of this year trulymarks the end of an historic restructuring of the CST, which really began in 2009with thegovernanceinitiative.TheCSThasmaturedagreatdeal.Wehavebeenguidedthroughallthesechangesbyaconsistentfocusonthedeliveryofvaluetoourmembership.Themembershiphasinreturn,respondedwithenthusiasminmakingacontribution.With21membersstandingforelectiontotheBoardthisyear,thevitalityoftheorganizationisself-evident.Iamgratefulforthecontributionofthe2013-2015BoardofDirectors,whohelpedguidethesocietythroughwhatwasattimesadifficult transition.AtulHumar, IanAlwayn,DavidGrant,MichaelMengel, Kathryn Tinckam, TammyKeough-Ryan, JeanTchervenkov, JoeKim,PastPresidentTomBlydt-HansenandOfficersAdrianRobertsonandJennyWichartare all to be congratulated. David Grant and Jean Tchervenkov will be stepping down from the Board, while JennyWichart will be leaving the AssociateMember Liaison Officer position and standing for election.We cannot concludewithoutanacknowledgmentofExecutiveDirectorRobGallaher, andHolly Fan,whohavebroughtmuch in thewayofnewperspectives,newenergyandnewapproachestoourwork.Itismypleasure,incompletingmytermasPresidentoftheCST,toreportthatthestateofthesocietyisexcellentandwelookforwardtonewopportunitiesfortheprofessionaldevelopment,training,andacademicadvancementofourmembership.Sincerely,

TheEducationCommitteehasbeenworkingtorevisetheResearchFellowsinTransplantationSession(ResearchFITS)oftheAnnualScientificMeeting(ASM),withafocusonpreparingtraineesonthebeginningstagesoftheircareer.Therevisedsessionatthe2015ASMwillfocusonstartingalabandresearchprogram,creatinganeducationportfolioandinteractivesessionswithtransplantprogramdirectors.
ThecommitteealsopreparedanddistributedaneedsassessmenttotheCSTmembership,todeterminewhereitshouldfocusitseffortsgoingforward.Afterreview,thefirstprojectwillbetodevelopinformationalmaterialsthatcanbeusedbytransplantprogramstocommunicatewithandeducatefamilyphysicianspost-transplant.
FutureeffortsofthecommitteewillincludedevelopingacollaborationwithAstellasontheirTransplantFellowsSymposiumandmakingita“pre-course”beforetheCSTASM;andworkingwithtransplanttrainingprogramdirectorsasthenewRoyalCollegeAFCinTransplantationcomesintoeffect.
TheEthicsCommitteeoverthepastyearhasbeendevelopingthecontentfortheannualEthicsSessiontobeheldattheAnnualScientificMeeting.Thesessionistocompriseofapanelformatandthree(3)speakersspecificallyaddressingissuesrelatedtodeathdetermination,ethicalissuesregardingDCDgenerallyandspecificallytopediatrics.TheChairsareworkingonstudyingethicalissuesrelatedtotransplantationforforeignnationalsandprofessional’sattitudesregardingtheissue.
Planning forward, the committee is developing a mini ELPAT pre-meeting inMontreal in 2016 that wouldincludebothworkshopsandtraditionalpresentationsdeliveredasapre-conferenceevent.

During2014,theGrantsandAwardsCommitteecreatedandfinalizedtheTermsofReferencefortheFellowshipAward.TheTermsofReferencefortheotherthreeawards:theLifetimeAchievement,ClinicianRecognition,andResearchExcellenceAwardwereallreviewedandupdated.ThecommitteerecognizesthefinancialconstraintsthathaveresultedintheFellowshipAwardbeingwithheldfor2015andwouldliketothanktheBoardforitsefforttosustaintheFellowshipAwardmovingforward.
ThreeawardeeswereidentifiedfortheyearandtheirawardswerepresentedattheASMinMontreal.Congratulationstothe2014Recipients:Dr.DavidLandsberg,CSTClinicianRecognitionAward;Dr.DeepaliKumar,CSTResearchExcellenceAwardandDr.AnandaVenkatachalam,CST2014-2016Fellowship.
Previousfellowshipawardeeswerecontactedfortheirupdatesonprogressintheirresearch.Overthepastyear,additionalefforttodisseminateinformationabouttheawardsthroughnewslettersandemailswerecarriedoutwiththegoalofincreasingthetotalnumberofsubmissions.
Giventhedepartureofseveralcommitteemembers,additionalmemberswereaddedinordertomaintainabalanceintermsofcommitteecompositionbyspecialtyandcentre.

AsastandingcommitteeoftheCST,itismandatedtosupporttheBoardbyrecommendingapolicyframeworkthatsupportstheactivitiesoftheSocietyandprovidesforgoodgovernance.Itiscommittedtotheprinciplesofopenconsultation,unbiasedvettingandtransparencyinitswork.
Fromagovernanceperspective,thisincludessupportofcommitteesandtheBoard.TheGNCreviewedandupdatedtermsofreferenceforcommitteesappointedbytheBoardatthebeginningofeachcommitteeterm.TheGNCperiodicallyreviewedexistinginternalpolicyandprocedures,andprovidednewonesonrequesttomeettheevolvingneedsoftheSociety.Itprovidedamechanismtoupdateby-lawsasneeded.TermsofreferencethatapplytoOfficersandotherBoardappointeeswerereviewedandupdated.
Asfornominations,theGNCwastaskedperiodicallywithidentifyingcandidatestoChairCSTcommitteesortoserveasrepresentativesonexternalagenciesonbehalfoftheSociety.ThesewereprovidedtotheBoardofDirectorsasrecommendations.TheGNCwasalsoresponsibleforprovidinganinitialslateofcandidatestorunforelectionasDirectors,inadditiontocandidatesforeachoftheelectedOfficesoftheCST.TheChairandCo-Chairwouldliketoexpresstheirgratitudeforthecollegiality,wisdomandcommitmentofthecommitteemembersfortheirworkonthecommitteeoverthispastyear.

TheScientificMeetingsCommitteeiscomprisedofmembersrepresentingallorgansystems,surgical,medicalandalliedhealthspecialties.Membersparticipatedfullyintheprogrammingandotheroperationaldecisionsregardingmeetingcontent.
Thisyear,weareforthefirsttimeworkingonanannualmeetingtobeheldjointlywiththeBanffFoundationofAllograftPathology.AssistedbyajointASMCommittee,co-chairedbyDr.JohnGill,agreatdealofworkhasbeenputinbybothsocietiestoensureaweek-longprogramthatwillbetopicalforbothgroups.Abstractsubmissionclosedwithamorethan60%increaseinabstractsreceivedcomparedtoprioryears.Asinpreviousyears,theAbstractReviewCommitteeconsistedofmembersoftheCSTResearchCommitteeandtheScientificMeetingCommitteeandbalancedondisciplines,organgroupsandexpertise.Competitionfortheplenaryspotswasfierce!

TheCSTResearchCommitteehaspartneredwithCNTRPinvestigatorDr.Marie-ChantalFortintojointlydevelopanddisseminatearesearchprioritiesquestionnairedirectedtopatientsandtransplantprofessionals.Thisispartofaninitiativetoascertaintransplant-relatedresearchprioritiessimilartotheeffortthatwasundertakenbytheCanadianKidneyKnowledgeTranslationandGenerationNetwork(CANN-NET)fordialysisresearch.MemberoftheCSTResearchCommitteewillalsobeinvolvedinthenationalface-to-facemeetingthatisplannedforlate2015orearly2016togather,synthesize,anddocumentthefinallistofresearchprioritiesbasedonthefeedbackofpatients,providers,andresearchers.
ThemembersoftheCSTResearchCommitteehaveprovidedscientificinputforabstractssubmittedtothe2014CSTASM.ThiswasagreatsuccesssincetheexpertiseofthecommitteecouldbeusedtoefficientlyreviewtheabstractsandallowtheASMorganizingcommitteetocometodecisionsaboutthestatusoftheabstractsinarelativelyshortperiodoftime.
Finally,workontheresearchcomponentofthewebsiteisongoingandwillberevisitedintheupcomingsummertoensurethecontentreflectstheneedsoftheCSTmembership.
