day. Together we are meeting the challenging and complex needs of more than 71,000 of our neighbors

through the tireless work of our twenty partner agencies and growing collective impact initiatives. We’ve

all seen the explosive growth across Denton County and now we see an unprecedented level of need:

• Nearly 9,000 children under the age of five live in poverty and will enter kindergarten behind their

middle-class peers.

• Over 35,000 children and youth, one in three in Denton County, are at-risk of dropping out of school.

• Approximately 13,000 children and 20,000 adults suffered from severe mental illness.

• More than 50,000 households in Denton County are financial unstable and rely on emergency

assistance or predatory loans.

So what can you do? You can GIVE, ADVOCATE and VOLUNTEER. Last year more than 12,000 donors

generously gave over $2.4 million to United Way of Denton County to improve lives in Denton County. The

In 2014-2015, the Denton County Citizen’s Council on Mental Health continued its fact-find-ing efforts building upon United Way of Denton County’s Community Needs Assessment. In partnership with the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, the Council recommended that the community convene a Denton County Behavioral Health Leadership Team to establish and maintain a continuum of care to address mental health issues in Denton County.

The Denton County Behavioral Health Leadership Team is an example of Collective Impact at its finest. Team members collaborate with one another to effect positive change. United Way of Denton County’s role as the backbone organization is to facilitate and organize this complex collaboration, enabling the team to make strides in breaking through the many barriers to mental health treatment in our community.

Scheduled to convene in June 2015, the Behavioral Health Leadership Team will initially consist of five workgroups centered around: Veterans, Mental Health Court, Jail Diversion, Housing, and Child and Family Systems. More workgroups will form as the Behavioral Health Leadership Team moves forward.

Appointees to the Denton County Behavioral Health Leadership Team will include representatives from: Denton County Commissioner’s Court, Denton City Council, Lewisville City Council, Krum City Council, Health Systems Hospitals, MHMR of Denton County, Denton County Health Department, Health Funders/Insurance Providers, Denton and Lewisville ISDs, North Central Texas College, Texas Woman’s University, University of North Texas, Law Enforcement, Housing, Wellness Alliance for Total Children’s Health (WATCH) and United Way of Denton County.

COLLECTIVE IMPACT: INCOMEImproving the financial stability of Denton County families

Moving families to greater financial stability transforms people in our community and em-powers them to improve their lives and all those around them. Building upon past success-es, United Way of Denton County expanded programs and initiatives that provide our com-munity with both short-term cash from tax refunds and the long-term money management skills necessary to become financially stable.

In its eighth year of operation, volunteer tax preparers brought over $1.3 million back into the Denton Coun-ty economy through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. These tax refunds went into the pockets of 861 local low- to moderately low-income households and helped them fund car repairs, pay for college tuition and escape burdensome debt. In addition, dedicated volunteers helped taxpayers file their federal income tax returns for free, saving each Denton County taxpayer hundreds of dollars in tax preparation fees, money spent on food, clothing, school supplies and other necessities.

Our Bank On Denton County financial stability workshops continued for a third year, helping 349 people learn critical personal finance skills, avoid predatory lending and establish positive banking relationships to improve their financial outlook in life. In collaboration with local banks, credit unions and the FDIC, United Way of Denton County volunteers are helping people find solutions that move them past the high costs in-volved in check-cashing services, payday loans, rent-to-own agreements and other “alternative financial services.”

Schools are crucial to the development of our children and our community, but as Jaime Vollmer said, “Schools cannot do it alone.” In 2014-2015, United Way of Denton County collaborated with our community and our schools, improving the lives of both students and their families. We continued to support successful initiatives like Mentor Denton and the Pre-K Coalition, while incubating new collective impact initiatives across Denton County.

In partnership with school districts in Denton, Lewisville and Lake Dallas, United Way of Denton County created School-Based Community Centers at four Title I elementary schools in our community. Hosting events like free flu vaccinations and Bank On Denton County workshops, School-Based Community Centers bring useful programs and resources into a trusted environment within walking distance of local families. With four successful pilot programs to date, School-Based Community Centers are expanding to help fami-lies across Denton County in the years to come.

Local businesses also collaborated with United Way of Denton County. Through the Denton County Works pilot program, volunteers from Peterbilt Motors Company and Labinal Power Systems taught high school se-niors key skills and knowledge related to job opportunities, job interview preparation, interview etiquette, social media responsibility and financial literacy. Over 75 students have taken part in Denton County Works, many moving on to full-time employment shortly after graduation.
