The 3rd International Conference on Transportation Infrastructures ICTI 2014.The conference is organized by the Departement of Civil and Industrial Engineering at

the University of Pisa under the auspices of the International Society for Maintenance

and Rehabilitation of Transportation Infrastructures (iSMARTi) and of the Società Italiana

Infrastrutture Viarie (SIIV).

This conference is the third in a highly successful series that began in China followed by

the second conference in Brazil, and it occurs at four- year intervals.

The ICTI series aims to promote and discuss efficient planning, design, construction and

maintenance of transportation facilities and infrastructure assets by addressing important

issues related to roads, railways, airports, intermodal and mass transit systems.

The 3rd ICTI 2014 is focused on sustainable development and preservation of transportation

infrastructure assets, by eco-efficient and cost-effective actions needed to correct

undesirable situations. The conference aims to present and discuss current knowledge

of the ever-changing challenges to scientists, engineers, managers, and professionals

from around the world who are involved in sustainable development and maintenance of

transportation infrastructure assets.

DESTINATIONSTUSCANYFrom the Etruscans to the Romans to the Renaissance, Tuscany is possibly the greatest repository of art in the world, from extraordinary paintings and sculpture to frescoes and architectural masterpieces. Visitors to Tuscany come for many reasons. Many come in search of fine art, others to explore the extraordinary countryside. Gourmets and wine buffs descend on Tuscany to enjoy the simple yet wonderful cuisine and wine. Walkers enjoy the mountain paths, cyclists the rolling hills, summer vacationers the sea coast and islands. Students come to learn the beautiful Italian language and culture. There is a lot to see and do in Tuscany, the difficulty is really where to start. Certainly most should start with Florence, then continue on to Siena and Pisa. The roll call of città di arte, cities of art, is daunting: Arezzo, Cortona, San Gimignano and Lucca are all striking. The more you come to know the region, the more extraordinary Tuscany appears.

LOCATIONPISAWhen people think of Pisa they usually think of the Leaning Tower, but Pisa has many interesting sights and attractions.Pisa was one of the four great maritime republics in the middle ages and retains a good selection of monuments from that era. There’s also the Arno River and several interesting museums. The Campo dei Miracoli, with its Romanesque buildings, is the highlight of a visit to Pisa. The area around the cathedral and tower is beautiful and can easily occupy several hours. The piazza was built outside the main city center but within the still-preserved city walls built in 1155.The Torre di Pisa or Leaning Tower is one of World’s most famous towers. The Duomo is an imposing white building dating from 1063. The facade, constructed in the twelfth century, has four tiers of open galleries housing statues and decorated with marble inlay. The doors have bronze panels with bas-reliefs from the sixteenth century. Inside there are a sixteenth century wood ceiling, several important art works, and a magnificent marble pulpit. The Battistero or Baptistery is a round white-marble building. Construction started in 1152 and was completed in the late fourteenth century with the addition of an eight-sided cupola.Camposanto was the cemetery for noble citizens of Pisa. The floor is covered with tombstones and there are many funerary monuments.

TRANSPORTATIONBY AIRTuscany has two international airports, the Galileo Galilei International Airport in Pisa and Amerigo Vespucci Airport, also known as Peretola, in Florence. Located only 80 km apart, the Pisa airport is the larger of the two airports. Both airports handle flights to major European cities. Pisa handles the bulk of European scheduled flights so it might be easier to find flights into Pisa. Direct flights from North America are generally more expensive than stopover routes somewhere else in Europe. More affordable fares can be had if one flies non-stop to a major European city such as London, Paris or Berlin and then takes a Ryan Air (low-fare European airline) flight direct to Pisa. You’ll have to change airports in London, Paris and Berlin, though, as Ryan Air generally uses secondary airports. The Pisa airport terminal is directly connected to Pisa Central Station by direct train service (5’), with many trains to the Pisa central station and with eight trains a day from the Pisa airport to the main Florence train station (50’). The railway terminal is located just outside the departures hall. You can also reach the center of Pisa with bus or taxi service (10’). The Florence airport also is located on the north western edge of Florence; taxis and a bus shuttle connect the airport to Florence’s historical center (15’). From Florence airport you can reach the Pisa airport terminal by a bus shuttle (60’).

BY TRAINThe Italian railway system, run by Trenitalia, is connected with the rest of the European rail system so it is easy to reach Tuscany from locations across Europe and Italy. The main route that passes through Tuscany is through Florence, on the Bologna-Rome line. Another line from Rome hugs the Tyrrhenian sea coast and passes through Pisa. Florence and Pisa are connected by a speedy regional train (50’).Florence’s main train station is Santa Maria Novella (SMN). High-Speed trains arrive to Florence from Rome (90’) and Milan (105’) and to Pisa from Rome (150’).You can check timetables on Trenitalia.
