NEWS BRIEFSummer winds down - Yet still lot’s ahead

Steve Frazier, LLPOA President:!

What a beautiful summer it has been! Karen and I look forward to the fall season on Lone Lake. Last we talked we had just enjoyed the 4th of July and were headed to the annual meeting. Where did summer go?!

Although Labor Day weekend was relatively quiet at the public launch, inspections went at a good rate. First-time Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) volunteers Linda and Zint Kics reportedly had a good experience, conducted many inspections and met people from the lake who were taking their boats out for the season. If you would like to become involved next year, watch for the DNR training announcement, which will occur in the spring. The annual commitment is only three hours, and what you do can really make a difference to help protect Lone from the spread of invasives like milfoil and zebra mussels. (Go to page 2)!

AIS boat inspections offer an opportunity to inform boaters about the how to ‘clean, drain and dry’ equipment, plus time to meet fellow Lone Lakers. Left to right, skiers Susanne and Jim Rotsch; first-year volunteers Zint and Linda Kics.

Readers Write….

Karen and Ron Wilkinson write that they are thinking about replacing their cabin on lot 37. They have someone working on a cabin plan but wanted to hear from any members who have had positive experiences with contractors or builders who have done a fairly large project for them. They would appreciate any feedback. Contact Ron and Karen Wilkinson at [email protected]!

(Steve’s letter - from page 1) I am happy to report that over 70 members attended this year’s annual meeting and picnic on July 26th. It was great visiting and talking with other members from around the lake, and especially sampling the many good dishes prepared and shared by LLPOA members. What a feast! !

At the meeting, members voted upon two important items: board member elections and a dues increase. Bev Napurski, Dave Scott and Bob Kosloski were re-elected by unanimous ballot for a three-year term to the board of directors. Secondly, the membership voted unanimously to raise the dues to $25 per year beginning in 2015. This will allow the organization keep up with rising operating costs and provide additional funds to occasionally hire people to help with the public launch AIS inspections on busy weekends.!

Two reminders for the future: Our annual “Future of Lone Lake” planning session is scheduled for April 26, 2015. Put it on your calendar! We will have a new strategic lake management plan to review, and the board would love huge participation to make it a truly creative and meaningful session.!

And the last event of the year is the fall Road Clean-up on Sat., Sept 13 at the public beach at 9:00 a.m. This is a fun service project and a great way to meet your lake community neighbors. It usually takes about an hour to clean up a stretch of the road, and there’s always coffee and rolls!!

I want to thank you for your support and membership in the lake association. We had 120 people join this year and we urge you to become involved in the association next year. This year’s annual membership roster has been published; your membership contact person will be distributing them to paid dues members. If you are a member in good standing and didn’t receive your roster please contact your membership contact person or [email protected] for your copy. !

We’ll talk again later, Steve Frazier, LLPOA President. !

You may have noticed brush and tree-cutting around Lone Lake in the recent weeks. Mille Lacs Energy Cooperative (MLEC) removed trees that were adjacent to the power lines. Some members were surprised at the activity and the land being cleared. Estimates ranged to as much cutting as 40 feet wide.

One of our members impacted by the cutting talked to Michael Chalich, MLEC superintendent of construction and maintenance, who said that MLEC has a right-of-way of up to 40 feet under a single-phased primary line (power lines having transformers) and up to 10 feet on all secondary lines leading to a home. Based upon their Policy No. 509 regarding Right-of Way Clearing and Re-clearing, the company states that people should be kept informed of the cooperative’s right-of-way clearing or re-clearing plans and allow time for them to respond with any special concerns.  Notice is given via a post card sent in advance to residents.

LLPOA wants to put all members on alert to watch for such post cards and contact Mille Lacs Electric, if desired, to determine how and if such cutting will impact members’ property.
