2 WESTMINSTER SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014
This report summarizes the extraordinaryphilanthropy at the foundation of whatdistinguishes Westminster School. All those listedin the pages that follow deserve our mostheart-felt thanks and appreciation. Quite simply, this philanthropy allows us to support the peopleand to offer the programs that assure WestminsterSchool’s ongoing recognition among the bestsecondary schools.
Today’s media often portrays education as justanother transactional experience. In this view, teaching and learning becomes acommodity. A teacher delivers a class, and a student receives a lesson, nothing more. This shallow interaction, which could occur in any number of different settings andwhich today can even be automated, is discrete and disconnected from what precededand what might follow in a student’s education. The student receives the lesson andmoves on to the next task.
Those listed in the pages which follow, who have extended themselves so generouslyto support Westminster School, join us in embracing a far more ambitiouscommitment to a fulfilling and meaningful secondary education. As captured in thephotographs and text that accompany this report — one teacher, one coach, oneadvisor — changes everything. The relationships that our advisors, teachers, andcoaches foster and their accompanying lessons endure for a lifetime.
We depend on your support to sustain this commitment. Tuitions alone cannotadvance the mission captured in our core values of community, character, balanceand involvement and in our motto of Grit & Grace. With your support we are ableto enroll the best students through our highly selective admissions process, and weare able to retain and attract the best teachers, many of whom commit their lives tothis school. The relationships that develop between these students and teachers enrichall of our existing programs and invariably inspire new initiatives. Again, sustainingthis dynamic depends on the philanthropy summarized in this report.
Most poignantly, this report documents that our mission and core values rest on thesupport of a school community that extends across this nation and around our globe. From all of us on Williams Hill, THANK YOU!
With Grit & Grace,
William V.N. Philip, P’06, ’09Headmaster

EVEN MORE THAN THE INSTITUTION OF WESTMINSTER,
Mr. Eckerson is responsible for shaping my values
and probably my entire world view. Taking his
moral philosophy class as a sixth former opened my
eyes to the life of the mind and the world of ideas.
But for all of the philosophy I have studied thanks to Mr.
Eckerson’s inspiration, the more important lesson that he
taught me was the importance of action — that thinking
about right and wrong is worth nothing unless one is willing
to take action in order to make the world a better place.

IT IS HARD TO PUT INTO WORDS THE IMPACT OF
Mr. Newman’s role at Westminster. When I think about
how much he has done for me over the years, there is
no simple way to cover it all. He was my advisor,
Spanish teacher, lacrosse coach,
basketball mentor, college
advisor and, most importantly, a friend. I still keep in touch
with him and he is always there to talk or help in any way.
The effort he puts into his students, advisees, players and
relationships is astounding. He has taught me so much and I
don’t know where I would be without him.
