2013-14 YEAR IN REVIEW

Page 2: 2013-14 ECAC Year in Review

On January 2, 1938, what is now the ECAC, started as the Central Office for Eastern Intercollegiate

Athletics with its new Executive Director, Asa Bushnell, a secretary, a two-room suite in the Hotel Roosevelt, a $28,000 yearly budget, and a mimeograph machine. At the time, a number of eastern intercollegiate leagues and associations were going their own ways, duplicating efforts and spending unnecessary funds. The solution was reached when a group of athletic administrators reached the conclusion that one central office would be a wise alternative. Bushnell headed the organization until 1970, introducing the practices of scheduling, recruiting officials, training them, and assigning. Initially there were about 48 colleges. When World War II came along and college sports dwindled, Bushnell kept it alive and was ready for the great expansion in athletics. By 1952, the ECAC Holiday Basketball Festival was born. It became a tradition like no other in college sports. The Holiday Festival and other prestigious intercollegiate events such as the IC4A Track & Field Championships at Madison Square Garden, along with the National Invitational Tournament, which the ECAC coordinated from 1938-1980, were synonymous with the organization. The year 1961 marked the inaugural season of ECAC Division III Hockey. Over the course of the past 53 seasons, ECAC Division III Hockey has grown from a single league without a conference tournament into a five-league power that administers six conference championships each season.

ECAC Division III Hockey consistently produces some of the nation’s best hockey programs, as ECAC teams have won over a dozen national championships, including Elmira College’s Division III Women’s National Title in 2013 and Plattsburgh State’s Division III Women’s National Title in 2014. In addition, ECAC Division III Hockey teams occupy nearly half of the national polls on a weekly basis. In 1972, the ECAC staff was outgrowing its headquarters in New York City. Scotty Whitelaw had taken over as ECAC Commissioner and a search committee eventually selected the building it occupied for 42 years in Centerville, Mass., as its new home. Another major milestone came in 1983, when under the direction of the legendary Scotty Whitelaw, the ECAC became one of the first conferences in the nation to provide championships in women’s athletics. That same year marked one of the most significant events in the history of the ECAC. Following the success of the championships, the EAIAW was consolidated into the ECAC, doubling its number of championships and greatly increasing its member base. The landscape of intercollegiate athletics has changed drastically over the years and is ever evolving, as is the ECAC. Through the years, the ECAC has exerted leadership not only at the regional level, but at the national level as well. Comprising more than 33 percent of the NCAA membership, the conference plays an integral role in national collegiate athletics policy and legislation. Today, we

are proud to say that over 300 members strong comprise the ECAC, and we are just as proud of the services we provide — Championships, Officiating, Awards, Leagues and Affiliates, and so much more. The conference, led by President & CEO Kevin McGinniss, continues today to address many of the same issues affecting college athletics in the past while striving to lead this industry in the 21st century. Last year, the ECAC partnered with Madison Square Garden at the annual Holiday Festival again where student-athletes, and legendary coaches and administrators were honored on a day that the ECAC shined bright. Also last year, the ECAC was proud to serve as a host of the NCAA Men’s Division I Frozen Four, and the NCAA Division III Baseball Regionals. We have expanded our awards program to honor over 5,000 student-athletes a year, and continue to develop our officiating services through recruiting, training, assigning, and evaluating. We’ve added exciting new championships such as a Division II basketball tournament,

The Eastern College Athletic Conference

a Division II field hockey tournament, a Division II Football Bowl Game, and continue to explore new opportunities to enhance the student-athlete experience. In the spring of 2014, the ECAC announced that the organization would move its headquarters to Danbury, Connecticut. The transition to the Matrix Corporate Center in Southern New England strategically positions the ECAC headquarters and its staff in a centralized location that is accessible to its entire membership. The new location will be equipped with a strong technology infrastructure, is easily accessible to major highways, airports, and hotels, and offers space for conference meetings, as well as a venue for awards dinners and other special events. And, as always, the ECAC continues to pursue its mission of initiating, stimulating, and improving the intercollegiate athletics programs for student-athletes, and to promote and develop educational leadership, athletics excellence, and athletics participation.

A Letter from President & CEO Dr. Kevin T. McGinnissDear Friends,

I am pleased to share with you the 2014 Eastern College Athletic Conference Year in Review. In the pages to follow, you will see not only the highlights of the programs and services that the ECAC provides, but you will also see just how bright the future is for our members and the more than 100,000 student-athletes that we serve.

Throughout every year, the ECAC strives to enhance the experience for those student-athletes through high quality postseason championships, awards and publicity, special recognition events, and by providing the highest level of service possible.

Over the first year of our new administration, I am proud to say we accomplished a great deal in meeting our mission. Along with an organizational restructuring, we enlisted the services of Glivinski and Associates, a group that provides strategies for creating financial infrastructure and objectives for sustainability and growth. The ECAC is now on a path to accurate and relevant financial reporting, allowing the organization to focus on being a sustainable and viable business in today’s challenging economic climate.

The Conference entered into a partnership with Nelligan Sports Marketing, now Learfield Sports, a recognized industry leader for intercollegiate athletics sales and marketing. As a result of the affiliation, the ECAC has reached sponsorship agreements with multiple corporate partners, including Corvias Campus Living, the presenting sponsor of the ECAC Weekly Honors Program, and Under Armour.

Another of our key initiatives was shining the light on more ECAC student-athletes. By strategic adjustments in the awards program, we were able to honor more than 5,000 student-athletes in 2013-14 through weekly, post-season, and tournament recognition, and we crowned more than 100 ECAC Champions. These are just a few of our proudest achievements.

There is even more in store for 2014-15 as we strive to become a national leader in service for our student-athletes and institutions. Now that we turn the page on our first 75 years, we look forward to beginning the next chapter of the Conference’s rich history and continuing the mission of enhancing the student-athlete experience.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kevin T. McGinniss

Each year the ECAC holds a convention, trade show, honors dinner, and golf outing that draws attendees from throughout the membership footprint. The 2013 edition was regarded as one of the best in recent years as nearly 100 administrators and coaches and another 65 representatives from 37 vendors and corporate partners came together in celebration of 75 years of the ECAC.

After the annual golf outing kicked the weekend off at Ballymeade Golf Club on Sunday morning, the ECAC honored the achievements of the best and brightest student-athletes, administrators, officials, and institutions at the Honors Dinner Presented by Jostens. The event was attended by 179 guests, including dignitaries such as legendary ECAC Commissioner Roger “Scotty” Whitelaw and his wife Shirley.

Monday’s convention programming began with the first State of the ECAC delivered by then new Commissioner Dr. Kevin T. McGinniss. The day was also highlighted by presentations from representatives of the NCAA including Dan Dutcher, Erik Christianson, and Chris Ruckdaschel, along with a Strategic Communications Symposium featuring representatives from ECAC-SIDA and CoSIDA. The evening was capped off by the annual Clambake and Monday Night Football.

MSG HOLIDAY FESTIVAL

In December of 2013, the ECAC recognized its Corvias ECAC Players of the Week on court at half-time of game one of the MSG Holiday Festival in front of thousands of fans and honored legendary ECAC figures Dick Laskowski, Nick Macarchuk, Tom Penders, Speedy Morris and Scotty Whitelaw at halftime of game two.

This partnership with Madison Square Garden helps bring incredible visibility for the entire ECAC membership as we receive advance TV promotion and co-branding, and a full day of media exposure for the entire ECAC brand on Fox College Sports, and in front of 10,000 fans.

“Great idea to honor the student-athletes at the Garden! Our kids had a great time. Thank you.” - Bruce Filosa, Brooklyn College Director of Athletics

“Being recognized at the Holiday Festival was an exciting atmosphere to be honored at. I think that being honored at Madison Square Garden was something I won’t forget. Being on the court was something I never even imagined.” - Sam Whitney (West Islip, N.Y.), Junior, Adelphi University Women’s Soccer

“Being honored at the Holiday Festival was a fantastic experience for me. My favorite part of the event was the atmosphere. Being on the court, especially at a fantastic venue like Madison Square Garden is something I’ll carry with me my entire life.” - Eric Klenofsky (Lincoln Park, N.J.), Freshman, Monmouth University

In March, the ECAC honored distinguished student-athletes, institutions and officials at the annual Eastern College Football Awards Banquet at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Student-athletes and institutions from across all divisions, as well as officials from the Western New England, Connecticut and Metro Regions received awards. Nearly 200 guests attended the event at which our honored guest Kevin Gilbride gave an inspirational keynote speech and received an ECAC Lifetime Achievement Award.

HONORING EASTERN COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S BEST

“We really wanted to thank you for putting together this year’s ECAC Football Banquet down at Met Life Stadium last week. Our son was one of the boys honored. The evening really made receiving his award very special. It was a great evening full of some awesome food and an opportunity to see some great athletes recognized for their on-field achievements. I know it is a hard job putting something like that together. Just wanted to recognize what you’ve done for so many football families...it was greatly appreciated!” - Brad & Eileen Dietsch, Clarence, NY, Parents of St. Lawrence University football standout Alec Dietsch

Last April, the ECAC & ECAC Hockey took center stage as co-hosts of the 2014 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four. Working closely with the host City of Philadedelphia, the Wells Fargo Center,

and the NCAA, staff members helped put together a successful championship that saw ECAC Hockey member Union College make a run to their first national title.

Behind the leadership of ECAC Hockey Commissioner Steve Hagwell as Tournament Director, the event was sold out and both organizations shined bright with national media exposure. Joining Hagwell on the team were Fairfield University Senior Associate Director of Athletics Pat Murphy, Yale University Senior Associate Athletics Director Wayne Dean, ECAC Hockey Assistant Commissioner Ed Krajewski, ECAC Assistant Commissioner Katie Boldvich, ECAC Leagues & Affiliates Assistant Stephanie Scarpato, and ECAC Associate Commissioner Drew Brown.

NCAA DIII BASEBALL REGIONALS

The Eastern College Athletic Conference once again hosted the NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional Championship. The ECAC administered the Regional Championship at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass., home to the Harwich Mariners of the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. Second-seeded University of Southern Maine defeated number four seed Endicott College in the 15th game to capture the crown and punch its ticket to the NCAA Division III National Championship in Appleton, Wisconsin.

“We were extremely honored to once again host the NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional Championship,” ECAC Commissioner Dr. Kevin T. McGinniss said. “College baseball is synonymous with Cape Cod and there is a tradition of postseason baseball at Whitehouse Field. We enjoyed administering the event and we congratulate all of this year’s participants, especially Southern Maine.”

This marked the second consecutive season the ECAC hosted the event at Whitehouse Field and the eighth time in 12 years. The NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional was held in Harwich, Mass. from 2001-02, 2005-08, and 2011-12.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

The ECAC welcomed 11 institutions to the Conference in 2013-14 as The College of Charleston, Geneva College, Howard University, UMass Lowell, Bluefield State College, Pennsylvania State University Harrisburg, Marymount University, Hood College, Arcadia University, Alfred State University and SUNY-Maritime College were granted full membership.

“By joining the ECAC, we have furthered our department’s mission of providing additional recognition and competition opportunities to our student-athletes,” said Penn State Harrisburg Director of Athletics Rahsaan Carlton. “We look forward to being part of the ECAC family and bringing another level of visibility to our programs.”

“We are excited to be joining the ECAC,” said Arcadia University Director of Athletics Brian Granata. “Gaining access to the ECAC awards program and being able to participate in additional postseason championships will help us enhance the experience of our student-athletes at Arcadia. We are pleased to be joining so many of the member schools within the Middle Atlantic Conference, who are already a part of the ECAC.”

In August of 2013, the ECAC honored its spring sport All-Stars at McCoy Stadium, home of the Pawtucket Red Sox, Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.

“I’m glad we got to go out on the field. I think it’s a great thing to have because not many awards are presented like this. It’s nice to be recognized. I was an All-American and they didn’t do this for me.” – Stephanie Pasquale, Temple, Softball

“I’ll remember this for the rest of my life. I know my dad will remember it and the rest of my family will too. It’s a special time for everyone.” – Scott Schaplinski, Salem International, Baseball

CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS

Last summer, the ECAC entered into a strategic partnership with Nelligan Sports Marketing, which was acquired by Learfield Sports just a few months ago, bringing with them even greater resources. In year one, our focus was spent on renewals and strengthening those relationships, while identifying new key strategic partners such as Corvias Campus Living and Under Armour.

The outlook for the partnership is promising as Learfield has added a dedicated GM for ECAC Sports Properties, Chris Dunn.

Page 12: 2013-14 ECAC Year in Review

In 2013-14, the ECAC recognized well over 5,000 student-athletes, more than doubling the number of awards distributed the year before.

This was accomplished by identifying sports that were not receiving awards, adding awards that were not being presented in some sports, while adding categories and proactively seeking out nominations when necessary.

The weekly awards were spread out Monday to Wednesday in order to accommodate primary conference offices that wanted to distribute over separate days.

“I would just like to thank the ECAC for selecting me as a Player of the Week and later as the Player of the Year for Division III New England Softball. It was not just the nine players on the field that won us a second straight National Championship. Every single person on our team has a role, and to succeed, everyone must know their role and excel at it. I am extremely humbled to have been selected as the ECAC Player of the Week and later as ECAC Player of the Year amongst so many talented players in such a competitive league. I am very proud to be a Jumbo and represent Tufts Athletics as well as the ECAC. “

- Johanna Clair, Tufts University, ECAC Player of the Week, All-Star, and Player of the Year

AWARDS PROGRAM

“I would like to thank the ECAC for selecting me as Player of the Week during my senior season. Being selected from a talented pool of student-athletes in a region of prestigious institutions is such an honor. Bringing home this honor not only represents myself, but my coaches and teammates at Boston University that pushed me to give 110 percent each and every day. Awards like these hold a special place for athletes, they give us pride in our accomplishments in the present moment and memories to look back on later down the road. Thank you ECAC for taking the time to put together an awards program to reward performances on the field.”

- Brittany Clendenny, Boston University, ECAC Player of the Week

CHAMPIONSHIPS

In 2013-14, the ECAC crowned 101 team champions, and 289 individual champions in 32 sports, giving thousands of student-athletes an opportunity to compete for a meaningful championship that they might not otherwise have had. Throughout the championships, we watched student-athletes celebrate like they won national championships, as you’ll see here in the images of some of our champions.

“SUNY Canton fell short to a very talented LVC team today. Just wanted to thank you Ben and everyone at the ECAC for the opportunity to compete. You’d be hard pressed to find a school who values it more. We’re thrilled to be a part and can’t wait until we capture our first ECAC title…hopefully sometime soon. Again, thanks for the opportunity. Our women had an outstanding season and it was great for them to get the chance to go up against some quality teams with post-season win-or-you’re-done consequences.” – Randy Sieminski, SUNY Canton Director of Athletics

“This is such a great thing, we had thought the season was done after the last game and low and behold we are in the post season still playing! Thank you!” – Father of a Salve Regina Baseball Player

Champions in BOLD

Page 26: 2013-14 ECAC Year in Review

In May of 2014, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced that the Board of Directors voted to move the organization’s headquarters to Danbury, Connecticut. The transition to the Matrix Corporate Center in Southern New England strategically positions the ECAC headquarters and its staff in a centralized location that is accessible to its entire membership.

The decision to relocate stemmed from an extensive study, conducted by the Board of Directors and Inter-Collegiate Athletic Consulting, that determined that the organization’s existing office structure, its associated costs, and its location did not allow the ECAC and its staff to serve the 312 member institutions spanning 17 states at the highest levels. The ECAC also completed a comparative evaluation of multiple geographic locations and commercial properties, finally zeroing in on Southern New England, Westchester County New York, and Bergen County, New Jersey before selecting the final location at the Matrix Corporate Center in Danbury, Connecticut.

“Relocating the ECAC headquarters to The Matrix Corporate Center in Northern Fairfield County, Connecticut will better enable us to service our entire membership at the highest levels,” said ECAC Commissioner Kevin McGinniss.

The State of Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development will support the relocation with a total of $400,000 in assistance from the Small Business Express program. The ECAC will receive a $100,000 matching grant that requires the creation of 5 jobs, as well as a $300,000 loan, $200,000 of which is forgivable if 10 jobs are created within 18 months. The ECAC’s new headquarters is equipped with a strong technology infrastructure to videoconference and connect with member institutions digitally and is also easily accessible to major highways, airports, and hotels that offer venues for conference meetings, as well as awards dinners and other special events.

The proceeds from the sale of the ECAC’s long-time headquarters at the Bushnell Center in Centerville, Massachusetts will be added to the ECAC Endowment Fund. The ECAC Endowment Fund is administered by the ECAC Board of Directors and its Finance Committee in accordance with the established ECAC Endowment Investment and Spending Policies in support of the overall mission of the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

A New Era - Relocation to Southern New England

Page 27: 2013-14 ECAC Year in Review

A New Brand

The Eastern College Athletic Conference announced the launch of its new branding program in early July, created by Phoenix Design Works. The new comprehensive branding program includes a family of logo marks including the primary logo mark, secondary marks, a collection of sport specific marks, and championship marks for the ECAC’s nearly 100 championships that it holds each year. The new marks will be applied to all of the ECAC’s branding needs, including communications, promotional initiatives, event branding, uniforms, apparel, merchandise, and the Conference’s website, ecacsports.com.

The new ECAC lettering is bold, signaling a confident direction for the future, and provides a strong, recognizable signature for the Conference. The burning flame flanked by the Est. date of 1938 pays homage to, and reminds everyone, of the spectacular achievements the ECAC is built on.

“We’re excited to launch our new marks that reflect the ECAC’s strong history and tradition, and will carry us into the future with a bold and exciting brand,” said ECAC Commissioner Dr. Kevin T. McGinniss. “This was a real collaborative effort with Phoenix Design Works and we are grateful for their expertise and dedication to this project.”

“It has been an honor to work with Kevin, Drew, and the entire ECAC team on the new ECAC branding program,” said Jamie Skiles, President and Creative Director of Phoenix Design Works. “I think by working together we have been able to build a new brand for the new ECAC, while honoring the iconic history of the Conference. We are so honored to be a part of the ECAC team, and to have helped usher in this new era for the conference. Many thanks to all our friends at the ECAC for making us feel like family, and for making the creation of the new branding program such an amazing experience. We truly are the Home of Champions!”
