The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) initially set the narrowbanding initiative

in motion in 1992 with the ultimate objective of increasing capacity and efficiency for the industrial/

business and public safety radio pools in the private land mobile radio services category Specifically, it set

forth that all “Part 90” business, educational, industrial, public safety, and local and state government two-way radio

system licensees currently operating legacy wideband (25 kHz) voice dispatch or data/supervisory control and data acquisition radio systems in the 150-174 MHz (VHF) and 421-512 MHz (UHF) bands must make the transition to the narrowband technology (12 5 kHz)

If you do not make the switch by January 1, 2013, you could face stiff fines and/or the loss of your communication capabilities Although the migration deadline seems far off, it is necessary to plan well in advance

You should first verify that you have a current and valid FCC Part 90 radio station license and then create a database of your equipment This will save time and effort, maximizing the use of your narrowbanding consultant If you need help with the narrowbanding process, BearCom has an on-staff FCC licensing expert and several systems solution specialists who are standing by to assist you

All BearCom remote call boxes are under the control of a microprocessor with a 90-second digital voice recorder This recorder provides a message that can be transmitted when the call button is pushed to identify the location of the call box (e g , “Rear-Entry Call Box”) A message can be enabled to the local call box speaker to instruct the first-time or casual user how to interact with the call box (e g , “Push to talk and release to listen ”) Also, BearCom call boxes can:

● Turn on a strobe light to flag the location for security personnel (e g , an emergency call box on a corporate or school campus or in a large parking lot)

● Be programmed to turn on the transmitter remotely to listen to activity around the call box (e g , a school classroom disruption)

● Monitor contacts that are opened or closed to indicate a fault that needs to be reported (e g , a power failure, someone tampering with the call box, unauthorized entry, activation of the motion sensor, etc )

● Be powered by a solar panel if located outside where no electricity is available locally
