2012 Season OutlookThe UCF rowing team looks to improve on its fourth-place finish last season at the Conference USA Rowing Championship by claiming its first league-crown in program history in 2012 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

The league regatta will be raced on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee for the second -consecutive year and will take place on May 12.

In 2011, Chelsey Lauzon was named to the All-C-USA Rowing Team for the second-consecutive year, also earning her third-straight CRCA All-South Region First Team honor at the conclusion of the season.

UCF is coming off a fourth-place conference fin-ish last year and look to, not only improve its

times in its individual events, but also to move up the rankings and beat Texas who took the title of conference champs last year.

The team will get a taste of what is to come in the latter part of the season beginning March 14 at the Longhorn Invitational, where it will take on 2009 & 2010 NCAA runner-up California and 2009 NCAA Champion & 2011 runner-up Stan-ford, among other schools.

The Knights will also host league rival and last year’s Conference USA runner-up Tennessee on March 24, before welcoming Stetson the fol-lowing Saturday. On April 14, the Knights travel to Rhode Island for the first time and will race Boston University, Rhode Island and Alabama. The last regatta of the season before the Confer-

ence Championships has the Knights traveling to Bloomington, Ind., on April 27.

The Knights have two new faces on the coach-ing staff, with the additions of Marc DeRose and Tracey Tallman. DeRose returns for his second stint with the Knights, serving as recruiting co-ordinator and assistant for the varsity team. Tallman trains the novice team and serves as an assistant with the varsity. Both will work closely with head coach Becky Cramer to improve the Knights to a top tier rowing program.

With a challenging schedule during the regular-season, Cramer set the Knights up to succeed when it matters the most...at the C-USA Cham-pionship in mid-May.

UCF Intercollegiate Rowing CenterThe UCF Intercollegiate Rowing Center sits on the south shoreline of Lake Pick-ett, just east of the UCF campus. The facility features a 12,000-square-foot boathouse with six individual boat bays for the team’s rowing shells. It also in-cludes a locker room, as well as a 6,000-square-foot clubhouse that has plenty of room for erg training, meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. This will be the fleet’s third season at the modern venue since the opening in spring of 2009.

Head Coach - Fourth SeasonBecky Cramer enters her fourth season as the UCF head rowing coach in 2011-12. Cramer was named UCF’s head rowing coach in June 2008 af-ter serving as the Knights’ interim head coach dur-ing the 2008 spring campaign.

Cramer is no stranger to the UCF rowing program, however, having spent eight seasons at UCF as either the head coach or as an assistant coach.

In her first season as the Knights’ head coach in 2009, Cramer led her squad to a third-place showing in the South Region and to a 10th-place overall finish at the Aramark Sprints South/Central Regional Championships.

During the event, Cramer’s varsity eight boat finished in fourth place in the Varsity Eight Petite Final after out-rowing Notre Dame and Kansas State.

During her first three seasons with the Black and Gold, Cramer worked with the novice squad, guiding them to numerous victories, including wins over Clemson, Columbia, Miami, Syracuse, Tennessee and UCLA.

Cramer served as an assistant coach at the University of San Diego for two years prior to her arrival in Orlando. Her responsibilities there included training the nov-ice women’s squad and acting as the primary recruiter.

Before her stint at USD, Cramer was the men’s novice crew coach at the University of Notre Dame for a year, while she also worked as an intern with the University’s Recreation Services department. In recognition of her contributions to the Fighting Irish rowing program, the team gave her the Christopher J. Nye Award for integ-rity, leadership and unselfish dedication - an honor traditionally bestowed on a student-athlete.

As an undergraduate at Dartmouth College, Cramer rowed for the Big Green and competed in the 1997 and 1998 NCAA Rowing Championships. She was voted the team’s most outstanding freshman in 1996. In 2000, while finishing her degree, she served as a student intern coach in charge of the varsity four.

From 1993 to 1995, Cramer trained at the Mount Baker Rowing and Sailing Center, where she was the stroke of the Junior National Championship eight crew. She also was invited to U.S. Junior National Team Selection Camp in 1994.

Cramer, who earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Dartmouth in 2000, earned her USRowing Level III coaching certification in 2003 and has been a mem-ber of USRowing since 1994.

The former Becky Frost, she married Andrew Cramer in July 2008.

Marc DeRoseAssistant Coach - First Season

Marc DeRose began his second stint as an assistant coach at UCF in August 2011. DeRose serves as the Knights’ recruiting coordinator and assists with the varsity squad. He previously worked at UCF in 2008-09.

DeRose spent the 2010-11 year at the head of rowing at the St. George’s School in Vancouver, British Columbia. The school’s men’s eight boat won the 2011 national title. The previous year, he served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the Miami women’s team.

Prior to originally accepting the position with the Black and Gold, DeRose served as the head coach of the lightweight squad at Columbia University from 2002-07. While at Columbia, DeRose’s squad won all of its cup races during the 2003 season, a feat that had never been accomplished by the team in Columbia history, while the varsity team finished in second place in the Ivy League and the IRA National Championships that same season. Three years later, DeRose led the varsity team to a fourth-place finish at the IRA National Championships.

During the summer of 2007, DeRose served as the men’s sweep coach for the US Rowing U23 Team, where he recruited, selected and prepared the LM4- for the U23 World Championships. DeRose served in a similar role in the summer of 2002 with the Ottawa Rowing Club, where he was also the men’s sweep coach for the Canadian

U23 team. His lightweight 2- team claimed the Canadian U23 National Champion-ship crown and his lightweight 4- claimed national runner-up honors. For his work, DeRose was named the 2002 Coach of the Year by the Ottawa Rowing Club.

DeRose was also the men’s sculling coach for the Guatemalan National Team from 2004-05. In that position, DeRose prepared the lightweight 1x for competition at the 2005 World Championships.

Prior to his stint at Columbia University, DeRose was the head men’s rowing coach at the University of Massachusetts from 1999-2002. While with the Minutemen, DeR-ose led the team to its best competitive record in over 20 years with a varsity third-place finish at the ECAC Championship in 2000, three freshmen first-place finishes in 2001 and a varsity second-place finish at the New England Championship in 2002.

DeRose began his career in Montreal, Canada, in 1996 with the Montreal Rowing Club as the junior women’s coach, while also working as the junior women’s provin-cial coach for the Quebec Rowing Association and the assistant women’s junior team coach for Rowing Canada during his four-year term.

DeRose graduated from Trent University with honors in 1996 with a bachelor’s of science degree in biology and environmental science. He then earned a master’s of science degree from McGill University in biology with a concentration on quantita-tive genetics in 1999.

Tracey TallmanAssistant Coach - First Season

Tracey Tallman joined the UCF rowing staff as an assistant coach in August 2011. Prior to coming to Orlando, Tallman worked as an assistant coach at Sacramento State for two years.

With the Knights, Tallman focuses on training the novice squad and assisting with the varsity team.

Before moving to Sacramento State, Tallman served as an assistant for both the men’s and women’s teams at St. Lawrence in Canton, N.Y. At St. Lawrence, she helped coach the women’s team to consecutive NCAA Div. III Rowing Champion-ship appearances in 2008 and 2009, the first in the school’s history. The 2009 squad placed seventh at the national team championship and the 2008 team placed sixth.

In addition, the women’s squad won back-to-back Liberty League championships during her tenure at St. Lawrence and she was a member of the staff that won the Liberty League’s Coaching Staff of the Year award in both 2008 and 2009.

Tallman also had coaching stints as an assistant with the Saratoga Rowing Associa-tion (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) in the summers of 2008 and 2009, and as a volunteer assistant at Skidmore College in the summer of 2003.

As a student-athlete, Tallman competed four years for Minnesota from 2003-07, and was a three-year member of the varsity squad. As a senior in 2007, she helped the Golden Gophers to a Big Ten Conference championship and the school’s first-ever appearance at the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championship.

During her junior season (2006), she was a member of Minnesota’s varsity four that claimed the boat’s first-ever Big Ten championship, one season after the crew placed fourth in the same event. As a freshman (2004), the Saratoga Springs, N.Y., native was a member of the team’s novice eight that went undefeated and won the Big Ten championship. At the conclusion of the season, she was named the novice squad’s most valuable rower.

Prior to Minnesota, she competed with the Saratoga Rowing Association’s varsity squad from 1999-03.

Tallman earned her master’s degree in educational leadership from St. Lawrence in May of 2009, and earned a bachelor’s degree in sports studies from Minnesota in 2007.

Peter BillingsBoathouse Director - Fifth SeasonPeter Billings was named UCF’s boathouse di-rector on Dec. 10, 2007. A 1973 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he was a rower on the United States National Team from 1971-74, as well as in 1981.

Billings was a national lightweight rowing champion from 1971-74, and continues to be a national masters rowing champion dating back to 1983.

Billings then served as the coach for the MIT men’s freshman lightweight crew for four seasons and became the vice president at Composite Engineering, Inc., where he was responsible for management of rowing shell production and repair, all non-routine communication with rowing customers and was engaged in the design and production work on projects outside of rowing shell production from 1975-2000.

In 1984, Billings supervised rowing shell and oar repairs, performing most of the repairs himself, at the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Karl HuhtaGraduate Assistant Coach - Second Season Karl Huhta enters his second year as the gradu-ate assistant for UCF rowing in 2011.

Prior to enrolling at UCF, Huhta spent the last two years as an intern coach with the women’s rowing program at his alma mater Washington

State University.

Huhta was a four-year letterwinner for the Washington State men’s rowing pro-gram from 2004-08. In his senior year, he was elected team Commodore, was named to the 2008 All-Pacific 10 Conference Team and rowed in the Varsity 4+ that won the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Conference Champi-onships, took silver at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships (PCRCs) and com-peted in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships.

In 2006, Huhta received the WSU Coaches Award for hard work and dedication and, in recognition of his contributions to the WSU men’s program, was honored with the Daniel K. Brevick Visionary Award in 2011. The award recognizes those who show outstanding commitment to the facilitation of change and advancement of WSU men’s crew.

Huhta earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management with minors in business administration and history from Washington State in 2009, before earning his US-Rowing Level III Coaching Certification in December of 2010. He has been a mem-ber of USRowing since 2006.
