UCF Softball ComplexSince its groundbreaking on March 14, 2006, the UCF Softball Complex is where the Knights call home. The state-of-the-art facility speaks volumes for how far the program has come under the direction of head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie and where it is headed. The 600-capacity stadium is one of the finest in Conference USA and on the national scene.

The field is professionally manicured by the UCF Facilities and Operations staff and includes a cov-ered batting pavilion, roomy dugouts, home and visitor bullpens and an outfield fence lined with palm trees.

UCF student-athletes have access to everything they need to prepare for gameday at the UCF Soft-ball Complex. The Knights have a spacious locker room, a lounge area complete with a television, couches and chairs, an equipment room and their own training room complete with a top-notch athletic training staff.

Along with having comfortable offices for each coach, the UCF Softball Complex also has a confer-ence room, a video room and locker rooms for both the coaching staff and for umpires. The press box at the stadium has room enough for home and visitor radio broadcasts, as well as multi-level media seating.

On game days, fans have access to a ticket booth, concession stand and gift shop, while also being able to participate in multiple promotions and events throughout the season.

2012 Season Outlookabilities behind the plate. The players in competition for the starting catcher position are Kellie Todd (Ocala, Fla.), Lindsay Selmer (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), Alena Murgatroyd (Lancaster, Calif.) and Hayley Barrow (Mi-ami, Fla.).

“Abby was one of the best leaders that we ever had in our program,” Gillispie said. “It’s not going to be easy to replace her, but behind the plate this season, we’re looking at Kellie, Alena, Lindsay, and we’re working Hayley back there as well. We’ve really believe that we have four potential starting caliber catchers back there and we think that whoever emerges as the start-er will have really overcome some strong competition from everyone else.”

Todd, a senior transfer from Chipola College, started 46 games for the Knights last season, but only two starts came at catcher. She also started 29 games in left field, eight at first base and seven as the designat-ed player. Selmer, a senior transfer from Lees-McRae College, was with the team last season but did not play due to transfer rules. She has worked extensively with the Knights pitching staff in bullpen sessions over the last year.

“Kellie has the mentality you want in a catcher even though she didn’t play there much last season. She is so focused, determined and disciplined in what she does on a daily basis,” Gillispie said. “Lindsay is such a fun player to work with. She has been terrific at getting our pitchers prepared for the rigors of the season.”

Murgatroyd and Barrow will also provide needed depth behind the dish with four pitchers on the staff.

“Alena and Hayley both bring different strengths to our lineup. Alena may have the best power bat on the team and we’ll find a place for her in the lineup either at catcher, first base or the designated player. Hayley was a pitcher in high school and she’s’ done a tre-mendous job calling games behind the plate because she is remembering what she would have wanted to throw in that same situation. Mainly, she has to gen-erally get more comfortable behind the plate since she doesn’t have a lot of experience there. We’re also working with her at third base, so she may end up be-ing a strong catcher for us down the road as opposed to this season.”

Infield UCF’s infield defense is expected to be vastly im-proved this season thanks to strong senior leadership and greatly improved depth across the board. With last season’s starting shortstop Tiffany Lane moving on due to graduation, senior Natalie Land (Mayo, Fla.), a two-time Conference USA First Team player, takes over as the starting shortstop after spending her first three seasons as the Knights’ starting second base-man.

Last season, Land finished the year as the Knights’ team leader in batting average (.346), runs (31), hits (54), doubles (7), triples (5), slugging percentage (.513), on-base percentage (.436), sacrifice hits (9) and stolen bases (25). At the conclusion of the regu-lar season, she was also named C-USA All-Academic Team.

“Natalie Land is definitely our starting shortstop this

season,” Gillispie said. “She did a great job last year at second base and we’re expecting her to be our senior leader to our young players. She’s earned that spot with her body of work throughout her career and we really think she has a chance to be one of the best players in the conference.”

The remaining three spots on the infield are facing some fierce competition this year as all three posi-tions have multiple players that could emerge as start-ers. The top candidates for the second base position are junior Marissa Menendez (Tampa, Fla.), junior college transfer Danielle Brewer (Apopka, Fla.) and freshman Brooke Scott (Broken Arrow, Okla.). Menen-dez was one of only four Knights players to start all 54 games last year with 46 starts coming at first base and eight at second base.

“Marissa has such a solid stick. She led our team in RBI last season and if we can keep her disciplined at the plate she really has the ability to make things hap-pen,” Gillispie said. “She played first base for us last season, but she was a second baseman in high school and is very excited about the possibility of move back to second again.”

While Menendez, Brewer and Scott are getting reps at shortstop, senior Allie Jest (Stone Mountain, Ga.), freshman Hayley Barrow (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Farrah Sullivan (Waynesboro, Miss.) are battling it out for the starting third baseman position. Jest started 50 games last season for the Knights at third base and ranked second on the squad in hits (52), runs (24) and stolen bases (19), while ranking third in batting aver-age (.299). However, Jest faces strong competition from the two freshman additions.

“Allie has great speed and she’s got a lot of value to us as a slapper with her ability to get on base and steal,” Gillispie said. “Hayley’s sister Hillary was our starting third baseman for four-straight years and we really think Hayley can be as good as Hillary was for us. We’ve been working her some at catcher, but we think third base is going to be her best spot. Farrah’s been a real pleasant surprise. Her hands are so soft and we think she got the defensive ability to play third as well as first for us.”

Much like second and third base, first base is another position that should see a lot of competition in 2012. As many as four Knights could see time at the bag. Sul-livan, Murgatroyd, Menendez, and Todd are expected to see action at first depending on how the other po-sitional battles shake out.

“At first base, Marissa is still in the mix if she’s not playing second,” Gillispie said. “Farrah is going to see time at first if she’s not playing third. Alena is go-ing to see time at first when she’s not catching and that’s the same for Kellie. She’s also going to play some first when she’s not catching. We definitely want Marissa and Alena’s bats to stay in the lineup though.” Outfield Perhaps the Knights’ greatest strength this season will be outfield defense. Seniors Vanessa Perez (San Diego, Calif.) and Tawny Swan (Gilbert, Ariz.) both return to the outfield. Perez and Swan were just two of four Knights to start all 54 games last season and should provide a stabilizing presence for incoming freshmen

Kahley Novak (Clermont, Fla.), Madeline Schroeder (Jacksonville, Fla.), and junior college transfer Lauren Aldridge (Vero Beach, Fla.).

“Vanessa and Tawny are both going to start for us and we think they both have excellent range in the out-field,” Gillispie said. “Tawny has a great arm out in right field and she saves extra bases for us. The one everyone should keep an eye on is Kahley. She’s been so good in centerfield so far that she might push Van-essa to left field, which would be incredible given how good Vanessa’s been in center the last few seasons.”

Left and right field could possibly see multiple start-ers in 2012. After Swan, Schroeder and Aldridge are in the mix for playing time at all three outfield spots and should provide good depth for the Knights in the grass.

“Madeline and Lauren should both see time out in the outfield at some point this season. We feel good about both of them,” Gillispie said. “Madeline has that basketball size and athleticism which makes here a great fit in the outfield. Lauren is on the opposite end of the spectrum from Madeline size wise, but we like her speed out in the outfield as well.”

With a great deal of depth both in the field and at the plate, the 2012 softball team knows it has something special, and will not just be happy with getting to the NCAA Tournament. With seven returning letterwin-ners, five junior college transfers and seven talented freshmen, this season’s squad, along with its head coach, has its sights set on the NCAA Super Regional, a place the team has never been…yet.

2012 Season Outlook

After an injury-plagued season that denied the UCF softball team a second-straight trip to the NCAA tour-nament, the 2012 Knights have their sights set on returning to postseason play. In their 11th season as a varsity program, the Knights are looking to bounce back and go where no UCF softball team before them has ever gone before, which is to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals and eventually the Women’s College World Series.

Head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie, who started the softball program at UCF in 2002, welcomes back seven letterwinners from her 2011 squad that posted a 22-32 overall record, a 11-13 league mark and made a surprise run to the Conference USA Semifinals.

Coaching Staff The entire coaching staff remains intact in 2012 as second-year assistant coaches Ruben Felix and Gerice Olson will return to their respective positions. Prior to arriving in Orlando, Felix played and coached profes-sional baseball in the MLB, while Olson played soft-ball at North Dakota State and eventually became the head softball coach at the University of Mary. Also returning to the coaching staff in his second season is volunteer assistant Joel Chimelis. Chimelis will be working with the Knights’ infielders and helping with the team’s offense before leaving to coach with the Houston Astros at the single-A level from April to Sep-tember.

“Ruben, Gerice, and Joel did a tremendous job last season when we dealt with adversity,” Luers-Gillispie said. “With so many new players on the roster this season, I’m very glad that we don’t have any turnover on our coaching staff. I think that will help all of our new players this year. We are all focused on getting back to the NCAA tournament and to the Women’s College World Series and being able to get this team to where they need to be to make that step.

Schedule Gillispie had the team’s ultimate goals for 2012 in mind when she put together the schedule for this season. She has her squad set to play perennial pow-ers UCLA, Washington and Florida State in its opening two weekends, as well as a Women’s College World Series participant in Florida, a conference foe (Hous-ton) that competed in Super Regionals and 13 teams that earned a bid into the regional tournament.

Five of the teams the Knights will face this season rank in the top-25 in the Preseason USA Today/NFCA Poll, while two additional squads earned multiple votes in the poll.

“Our schedule is huge in the first two weekends of our season,” Gillispie said. “We are playing so many great teams early like Washington and UCLA that we have to hit the ground running right away. We can’t afford to wait until March and April when league play starts. We always try and front load our schedule with top-25 teams to help prepare our players for conference play.”

In the Circle And with a tough schedule, the Knights know that

their success against some of the nation’s top com-petition starts in the pitcher’s circle. With the loss of last season’s top four pitchers, including No. 1 and No. 2 starters Diana Rojas and Ashley Schmitt, to gradua-tion, UCF has a fresh start this season with four new members on the pitching staff. Highly touted fresh-man Mackenzie Audas (Plant City, Fla.) is expected to be the opening day starter after a very impressive fall camp. A senior transfer from Philadelphia University, Ali Schmidt (Cordova, Md.), is expected to be the No. 2 starter.

“Mackenzie is definitely stepping in as our No. 1 starter. She did a great job this fall. She just came in as a true freshman and she did some amazing things this fall that earned her that No. 1 spot for us,” Gil-lispie said. “Ali is coming in as a senior from a four year school so she has a lot of experience at the Division II level. She’s also an engineering major and she just fell in love with our engineering program here at UCF which definitely helped her decide to come here and pitch for us. We’re very excited to have her.”

Junior college transfers Alex Hartshorn (Tampa, Fla.) and Hailey Barraco (Ft. Myers, Fla.) will both be ex-pected to contribute to UCF’s success early on in their first season with the squad.

“Alex was dealing with some injuries in the fall and didn’t get in as many innings as maybe we would have liked, but when she’s healthy she will be right there with Ali battling it out for that No. 2 pitcher spot. She has a lot of talent,” Gillispie said. “Hailey actually joined the team as a walk-on and we’re still working on getting her a little more consistent with her deliv-ery and mechanics, but she’s going to see some in-nings for us this year as well.”

Behind the Plate Following the loss of four-year starter and two-time All-C-USA Second Team selection Abby McClain, the Knights will look at several options to replace Mc-Clain’s leadership, home-run power and defensive

and 213 RBI.

During the 2004 season, Gillispie guided the Knights to a No. 30 ranking in the NFCA Coaches Poll and the team finished the season with a 42-21 overall record. Gillispie earned her 100th win at UCF, while several players earned all-conference and all-region awards. Best was selected to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Southeast Region Second Team, while Jania Shin-hoster earned all-conference first team and A-Sun All-Tournament Team honors. Amber Lamb was named A-Sun Freshman of the Year and Alvarez earned A-Sun All-Conference First Team and All-Freshman Team honors. Jennifer Whitley was named to the A-Sun All-Tournament Team.

In the 2003 season, the Knights compiled a 37-31 overall record and a 13-7 mark in the A-Sun. Best was named A-Sun Player of the Year and was recognized by the NFCA on the all-south region team, while pitcher Dottie Cupp and Shinhoster received A-Sun All-Confer-ence honors.

During the inaugural season in 2002, the Black and Gold had a 46-19 record and posted a 21-game win-ning streak, setting an A-Sun record. Cupp and Shin-hoster were named all-conference and all-region while Best earned all-conference.

2011 Season ReviewBOMBS AWAYWith three home runs in C-USA play last season, se-nior Abby McClain overtook the No. 3 spot on the UCF individual career record chart with her 15th, 16th and 17th career round-trippers. Entering C-USA play, Mc-Clain shared the third spot on the register with Kacie Feaster (14). She trails only Stephanie Best (71) and Jania Shinhoster (33) for most career home runs by a Knight.

BLAZER SHUTOUTSenior Diana Rojas tossed her first-career shutout in the Knights’ opening-game victory over UAB on March 26 to hand the Blazers their first league defeat of 2011. The hurler improved her record to 4-6 on the year after allowing nine hits, striking out three and walking only two in the contest.

RECORD-BREAKING STREAKJunior Allie Jest broke the UCF hitting-streak record when she tallied a hit in her 16th-straight contest vs. UTEP on March 13th. The newcomer then extended her record to 17 games with a hit vs. Liberty three days later. During her 17-game hit streak, Jest posted a .377 batting average with 23 hits and 13 runs scored, while also stealing 11 bases. Former Knight Breanne Javier held the previous record of 15-consecutive games with a hit since 2008.

MAKING NOISE FROM THE STARTDuring Allie Jest’s run at the UCF hitting-streak re-cord, the junior also proved to be one of the tough-est Knights to get out, as the transfer from Tallahassee Community College posted at least one hit in 23 of her first 24 contests played. On the year, Jest has hit safely in 29 of 38 games played.

SAVE MESenior Diana Rojas broke the UCF career record when she picked up the third save of her career, and the second of 2011, in the Knights’ win over Kent State on March 23. In 2.2 innings of relief vs. the Golden

Flashes, Rojas did not allow a single runner to reach base to earn the save. She finished the year ranked 26th nationally and third in C-USA in saves.

WIN NO. 600Head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie tallied career-win No. 600 on March 5 when the Knights defeat Florida A&M, 5-1, in its final game of the UCF/Courtyard by Marriott Invitational III at the UCF Softball Complex. ALL-CONFERENCE USAJunior Natalie Land was named to the All-C-USA First Team, while senior Tiffany Lane garnered a spot on the All-C-USA Second Team in 2011. Both infielders made repeat appearances on the all-conference team, as Land made her second-consecutive appearance on the All-C-USA First Team and Lane was also named to the first team in both 2009 and 2010.

C-USA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMSenior Abby McClain and junior Natalie Land were honored as repeat selections to the 11-member Con-ference USA All-Academic Team as voted on by the league’s sports information directors this season. The pair of Knights were both members of the league’s all-academic team in 2010, while McClain was also honored as a sophomore in 2009. In order to be eli-gible for the recognition, student-athletes must hold a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, be of at least sophomore academic standing and have competed in at least 60 percent of games this season as a starter or key reserve.

CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT IIIThe College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Abby McClain and Natalie Land were named to the Capital One Academic All-District III First Team. The announcement marked the first time in program-history that two Knights were named to the first team in the same season. With their selec-tion to the Capital One Academic All-District III First Team, the pair became eligible to be voted onto one of the CoSIDA Academic All-America teams.

C-USA HITTER OF THE WEEKSenior Tawny Swan earned the Knights first and only C-USA Player of the Week honor of 2011 on May 2 after batting .750 with six hits, a triple, five RBI and one run scored to help UCF to its second league-series sweep of the season vs. Southern Miss. Swan also posted a 1.000 slugging percentage, a .750 on-base percentage and accounted for 43 percent of UCF’s run production in the three-game tilt.

C-USA CAREER TRIPLES RECORDSenior Tiffany Lane concluded her decorated career as a Knight as the C-USA career leader in triples. The speedy lefty boasted 23 career triples, having hit sev-en as a freshman, eight in her sophomore campaign, six as a junior and two in 2011.

GET AHEAD AND STAY AHEADThe Knights were flawless last season when taking a lead into the seventh inning of contests, boasting a perfect 16-0 record when leading after the sixth frame. UCF lost only six games in 2011 when taking a lead into the fifth inning.

SACRIFICE FLY RECORDSophomore Marissa Menendez tied the UCF single-season record with her fifth sacrifice fly of the year in the Knights’ series finale win over Marshall. She finished the year ranked second nationally in sacri-fice flies in 2011. The first baseman matched former Knights Hillary Barrow and Rachelle Schmidt for the record.
