Evco 3 vs. GsHl champion #3/2* *If the GSHL champion wins the crossover game against the Evergreen 2A Confer-ence third-place team, the GSHL champion will take the 2-seed to state, and the winner of the 2 vs. 2 game will take the 3-seed. If the EvCo’s third-place team beats the GSHL champion, it will take the 3-seed to state, and the 2 vs. 2 winner will be the 2-seed. Notes: Tumwater has already sealed the EvCo regular-season championship, and Mark Morris has sealed the GSHL championship. ... If Capital beats River Ridge on Friday, and W.F. West beats Centralia, the Cougars and Bearcats will be second and third, re-spectively. Should River Ridge upset Capital, a W.F. West win would create a three-way tie for second place and, with three playoff spots available, a tiebreaker would likely be instituted.

From the Oct. 22, 2011 edition of The Chronicle: Bryce Hanson could easily finish his senior season with only one reception. That one, though, is something he’ll never forget. Hanson hauled in a 10-yard pass from Mitch Gueller in overtime Friday night in Chehalis for the game-winning touchdown in W.F. West’s 21-14 win in the 104th-annual Centralia-Chehalis Battle of the Swamp. “I didn’t even know what we were doing. It was crazy,” Hanson joked of the Kansas tiebreaker overtime situation, in which the teams take turns starting a drive from the opposition’s 25-yard line. “Our defense held ‘em and got a fourth down, and we put it in the end zone.” The contest, played appropriately in the rain, was every bit the slugfest a quagmire-themed rivalry match should be. The teams combined to run for over 400 yards, with Centralia’s Ma-son Musselman piling up 146 yards on 26 carries, and the Tiger defense rose to the occasion against the normally-explosive Bearcat offense.

On paper, the Bearcats are the heavy favorite. They were also, however, favored in the Battle of the Swamp the last two seasons — and each game was decided by a single touchdowns, including last year's overtime thriller. And so, as they always are this time of year, the records — likely playoff-bound W.F. West against the winless Tigers — will be thrown out when W.F. West heads across town to face rival Centralia. "In this game, I just go back to the last two years," Bearcat coach Bob Wol-lan said. "That's way more the norm than a lopsided game."

chuckin' it in chehalis W.F. West's offense has, without question, been dominated by its first-year quarterback, Tanner Gueller.

"It really starts with the quarter-back, with Tanner, and his ability to grasp the offense, and what we're trying to get done," Wollan said. "And, along with that, being able to recognize what defenses are giving him." He's also not quick to force the ball into coverage, and happy to hit his re-ceivers on short routes. "I think we've got some really qual-ity receivers that go and make plays for him, and we have the ability to throw the ball to backs," Wollan added. "We can spread the ball out. There's a pretty good crew of those guys that can go catch the ball." The offense started off as a work in progress, with running back Keylen Steen the lone returning starter. De-spite a new line and new corps of re-ceivers, the offense has been just fine. "It's definitely been the focus to throw the ball, and make people go out and defend it," Wollan said. "That's kind of the mentality we've had since Day 1, and the mentality we have in Week 9."

In a win over River Ridge two weeks ago, though, Gueller both ran and passed for over 100 yards. "You can see it start to evolve a little bit, like it did last year as it's get-ting closer to this time of the year," Amrine said of the Bearcats' offense. "They're spreading you out, but using Tanner now as a running back as well. That puts pressure on you, because they spread you out, but any time the quarterback is a runner you're almost looking at a two-back backfield. But you still have to cover the field. They're playing a little bit to their patterns that they did last year." W.F. West's defense, with two re-turning starters (Steen at linebacker and lineman Billy Tufts) was nearly as inexperienced as the offense coming into the season. "We're not real big, but we're aggres-sive," Wollan said. "The kids are tough, and they've learned a lot throughout the course of the season about what their roles are."

The team, as well, learned which players could fill roles. "We've just had a lot of kids we real-ly didn't know much about step up and be players for us," Wollan said, citing defensive linemen Trei Cline and Cole Rife, and linebacker Riley Edwards, as examples. "We've had a lot of pleasant surprises on that side of the ball. We've been in a ton of close games this year, and really had to lean on our defense to close things out, and they've been able to do that for us."

tigers taking their lumps It's been a tough year for Centralia, which needs a victory over its cross-town rivals to avoid a winless season. The Tigers will have Jacob Mono-hon back in the lineup at running back on Friday — but the team's two leading rushers, Drew Baldwin and Justice Tas-by, have been out for the past few games and won't be back for the season finale.

It's been a similar story across the board for the Tigers, who have been hampered by injuries all year. Centralia has had its share of bad luck on the field, as well. Black Hills scored four touchdowns directly off of Tiger turnovers last week. The Ti-gers' final drive against Aberdeen reached the 4-yard line, before penalties knocked them back. A field goal against Washington missed by a few inches, re-sulting in a 1-point loss, and Centralia went toe-to-toe with River Ridge before a fumble ended what could have been a game-tying drive a few yards short of the end zone in the final seconds. "They're about ready to have their luck turn a little bit," Wollan said of the Tigers. "I feel like the ball has bounced wrong, they've had some untimely turnovers, and they've had the oppor-tunity to take the lead and win some games." With the running back situation

something of a carousel, the Tigers have been throwing the ball a bit more than the 15 to 20 times a game they'd expected at the outset of the season. "In an ideal world I'd like to run the ball about 60 percent of the time, but we're a little bit opposite of that now," Amrine said. "That's been a circum-stance, but it's been a good thing. Some receivers have stepped up — Baylor Scott, Pat Neely, Ty Housden, John Sharkey and Trevor Baumann, and have taken some pressure off of our running game." The Tigers are in a nothing-to-lose situation on Friday. Centralia is out of playoff contention, but a win will put W.F. West in, at best, a tie with River Ridge for the third and final district playoff spot. That, however, isn't what the Tigers are playing for. "We want to try to win a football game," Amrine said. "Our focus is not on spoiling anything. Our focus is on us, and trying to win a game to end the year."

“The thing that strikes me first is their bal-ance,” Bearcats coach Wollan said. “Blaser and his receivers are definitely one of the better

groups we’ll see. And in their running game, McKeever’s a big physical guy, so I just like their

“It starts up front, with a good, solid defensive line. Their linebackers are good, and then they’ve got a lot of those receiv-ers as their defensive backs,” Centralia coach Steve Amrine said. “It’s a good, solid defense, really solid. Above average.”

“It’s been a pretty good struggle, defensively,”

Centralia coach Steve Am-rine said. “Last weekend I thought we played our best game defensively.

However, when they score four times without our de-

fense on the field, a 42 looks kind of gross, but it wasn’t evident with how our de-

fense played. I thought our defense played great.”
