2012 SEASON PREVIEW2012 SEASON PREVIEW

Southeastern Louisiana University

With a solid returning corps and severalnewcomers slated to make an immediateimpact, Southeastern Louisiana headcoach Pete Langlois expects his LadyLions to take major strides in 2012.

After a lackluster 2010, Southeasternshowed progress in 2011, doubling its wintotal from the previous season and remain-ing in Southland Conference Tournamentcontention until the final weekend. Withseveral key players returning looking tomake a bigger impact in 2012 and the ad-dition of a couple of immediate starters,Langlois and his squad are looking to takethe next step by being one of the six teamsto qualify for the league tournament, scheduled for May 10-12 in San Antonio,Texas.

“We’re very excited about the teamwe’ve put together and the potential wehave,” Langlois, who is in 18th season atthe helm of the Southeastern program, commented. “We have added some powerin the middle of the lineup with the additionof (juniors) Ariell Van Hook and KatieDoyle, which is something we’ve beenmissing in the past couple of years. Pairingthose two with (junior) Kelsey Nicholsand (senior) Katie Matthews should giveus a much more potent offense.

“We also feel really good about wherewe are defensively,” Langlois continued.“(Junior) Michelle Duhe has been out-standing in centerfield and she returns withKelsey and Katie to give us a veteran out-field group that all can take away hits withtheir ability to run down balls. Combining our new shortstop (sophomore)

Kayla Elswick with returning secondbaseman (sophomore) Megan McCollumwill give us arguably our best middle infieldwe’ve ever had.

“How much progress we’ve made onthe circle is going to be the key,” Langloisadded. “We’ve seen enough from (sopho-more) Jessie Browne and (junior) KennaTerry to have a lot of faith in their ability tobe a dangerous one-two punch in theSouthland Conference. We’re also pleasedwith the improvements made by (junior)Kati Morse and (senior) Vicki Honeycutt. If we can get those two going, we’re goingto have an extremely deep pitching staff.”

Nichols is the top returner for the Lady

Lions and will start in left field, after earn-ing All-Southland Conference honors as asophomore. Nichols, an Alvin, Texas na-tive, hit .358 on the year with five homeruns. Matthews will look to build on an im-pressive debut season in 2011, as theSpring, Texas product led the team inhome runs with six in her first season withthe program after transferring from Cente-nary. Duhe will roam centerfield, whereshe routinely robbed extra base hits withher diving catches.

The starting middle infield is also setwith McCollum returning at second base,

after an impressive freshman campaignthat saw the Lafayette native commit justthree errors all season. McCollum will bepaired with Elswick, a rangy shortstop whoearned All-Region VII honors as a fresh-man at Motlow College.

The other spots in the lineup are up forgrabs, a situation that has Langlois ex-cited.

“We have a lot of different options atcatcher, first, third and DP,” Langlois said.“We’ll have some players who are going tohave to make the most of the opportunitiesthat are presented them. Our returners aredefinitely going to be pushed by KatieDoyle and Ariell. Katie was our most pro-ductive hitter in the fall and Ariell may bethe most naturally talented hitter we’ve hadon our roster in the last decade. We’regoing to have to have them in the lineup, which in turn gives us some veteran op-tions off the bench that we can count on.”

Van Hook and sophomore Tori Shep-pard are slated to share time at first base, while both, along with Doyle, Browne, sen-

ior Meghan Gomez and senior TrishBliss all could see action as the desig-nated player.

Third base is another crowed positionrace. Returning starter sophomore MeganMoore will compete with senior Lauren

Coniglio, Bliss and Van Hook for playingtime on the hot corner. Gomez, Bliss,Doyle and sophomore Hali Westmore-land will all battle for catching duties.

Whoever is behind the plate will be re-ceiving pitches from what figures to be animproved pitching staff. Browne held oppo-nents to a .188 batting average, but fin-ished with 6-8 due in large part to controlproblems that Langlois and his staff be-lieve they have fixed heading into 2012.Terry returns after winning a team-highseven games – with all of her wins comingagainst Southland Conference opposition.

“Jessie is a No. 1-type talent in ourleague and we saw last year that whenshe pitched with good control, she wasawfully tough to hit,” Langlois said. “She’sdone a lot of work to fix her control issuesand we think we’ll see the results of herwork immediately. If Jessie can give usconsistent good innings, we won’t have toput so much pressure on Kenna like wehad to last year.

“Kati and (volunteer assistant coach)Tamra Ladnier worked on some newthings that we expect to really help herperformance,” Langlois continued. “The x-factor for our staff could be Vicki. Her abil-ity to change speeds could make her avery effective closer.”

Southeastern will face a daunting non-conference schedule before opening

Southland Conference play on March 16-17 at home versus Central Arkansas. Lan-

glois believes the non-conference sched-ule will be good preparation for the leagueschedule.

“We’re going to find out about our teamin those 25 games before conferenceplay,” Langlois said. “We’ve definitely en-hanced our team’s overall talent. Withthose new additions, there’s some playerswho are accustomed to being in the start-ing nine day in and day out that may haveto accept a lesser role. Our players’ abili-ties to accept whatever their role is and putthe team’s goals before their individualgoals is going to be key. We have recruitedgood kids and we believe that they aregoing to all do their best at whatever rolethey are given. If they do that, 2012 hasthe potential to be a great year.”

HEAD COACH PETE LANGLOISHEAD COACH PETE LANGLOIS

Southeastern Louisiana University

After 17 seasons at the helm ofthe Southeastern softball program, headcoach Pete Langlois is the winningestcoach in school history. His 2008 squadreturned to the Southland ConferenceTournament after a five-year absence.

Langlois is no stranger to post-season play, having led seven teams tothe conference tournament as a memberof the Southland Conference and theTrans America Athletic Conference. Duringhis tenure, the Lady Lion program hascontinued to grow and improve.

The upgrading of Southeastern'shome facility, North Oak Park, has beenone of the top accomplishments of Lan-glois’ tenure. The facility has had a pressbox, upgraded dugouts, a brick fencealong the foul lines and a new scoreboardinstalled over the past three seasons. Inthe offseason leading up to the 2010 sea-son, turf was laid in the team’s gym area togive the Lady Lions an indoor hitting facil-ity. New outdoor batting cages and a newticket booth/entrance were also added.Southeastern’s home field is considered tobe one of the top facilities in the SLC andthe immediate area.

Over the past 11 seasons, Lan-glois’ teams have produced a bevy of indi-vidual accolades including 40 all-SLCselections (six first team) and 40 all-Louisiana picks. In 2004, Summer Dela-neuville was named Louisiana Newcomerof the Year, while Karin Smith - theschool's career leader in home runs - wasnamed first-team all-SLC and all-Louisiana. As a senior, Smith was onceagain named all-SLC. The three first-teamSLC picks in 2002 were the first-ever inthe Southland for Southeastern.

In 2010, Southeastern junior in-fielder Katie Duhe was named to theESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americateam as a second team selection. Duhe, aPresident’s Medal of Academic Excellencerecipient, earned first team Academic All-Southland honors in 2011. In 2009,Heather Sherrill was named to the All-Southland team for the third time and be-came the school’s leader in hits, RBI,doubles, extra-base hits and total bases.Duhe was named to the Academic All-Dis-trict VI squad, marking the third of fourstraight years that one of Langlois’ playersmade the squad.

HEAD COACH PETE LANGLOISHEAD COACH PETE LANGLOIS

Southeastern Louisiana University

In 2008, Sherrill was a first teamAll-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana selection. Rachel Ray, who be-came the school’s career strikeout leaderas a senior, made her third appearance onthe All-SLC team. Senior Brooke Lockhartwas named to the Academic All-Americateam and helped Southeastern break thesingle-season home run record for thesecond straight year, hitting 43 home runsas a team.

In 2007, Ray was a first team All-SLC choice and Arica Rodriguez wasnamed Louisiana Newcomer of the Year. The Lady Lions tied the school record with31 victories, including a 1-0 win over No. 6LSU that snapped the Lady Tigers' 55-game winning streak versus in-stateschools. Ray set school records with 21victories and eight shutouts. Langlois alsoearned his 300th career win during the2007 campaign.

The 2001 season provided per-haps the finest season ever for Southeast-ern softball as Langlois' Lions broke or tied14 school and individual single-seasonand single-game records and placed fiveon the Southland Conference post seasonteams en route to the first winning seasonsince 1998. Most noticeably, the squadtied the all-time record for single-seasonwins with 31, set a new mark for winningpercentage in a single year winning 59percent (31-22) of its games and wonmore conference games than ever before(16). The team also tied the school-recordfor wins in the post-season tournamentwith two as the Lady Lions knocked off thesecond and third-seeded teams finishingwith a 2-2 record and nabbing third placehonors.

The 2002 season wasn’t quite asgood as 2001, but the finish was almostsweeter for Langlois as his team headedback to the Southland Conference Tourna-ment after a fifth place league finish. TheLions didn't win quite as many games orset as many records as the '01 squad, butthe 2002 team did, for the first time ever, make back-to-back trips to the SouthlandConference Tournament and came withinone run of knocking off top-seeded andtournament host Northwestern State in thesemifinals to finish third in the event for thesecond straight year.

In 1998, Langlois led the LadyLions into the Southland Conference andset the school's all-time record for winswith 31 and a berth in the SLC tournamentwhile also setting numerous standards inthe record books.

And the Southland Conference iscertainly a place where the softball mentoris no stranger. As a former pitching and hit-ting coach for Nicholls State, Langlois con-tributed in the Lady Colonels’ phenomenalseason of 1994 when they posted a 51-15season and were Southland ConferenceCo-Champions.

Following his stint at Nicholls,Langlois joined the Southeastern staff asan assistant coach in 1995 under then-head coach Corrie Hill. After Hill resignedto take a similar position at Baylor Univer-sity in the middle of the season, Langloiswas the obvious choice to lead the LadyLions.

Langlois picked up the duties asinterim head coach, finishing the seasonwith an overall 19-27 record, 11-18 withhim at the helm. He was appointed ashead coach following the season in June1995.

Langlois has compiled an overallcoaching record of 355-491 but hasrecorded 20+ wins in 10 of his last 12campaigns. In his time at Southeastern, hehas guided two All-South Region players,23 All-Louisiana team members, 45 all-Conference players, 17 conference all-Academic team members and fourCoSIDA Academic All-America honorees.

Before entering the collegiateranks, Langlois was a successful clubcoach in his native Baton Rouge.

Langlois received a bachelor’sdegree in business education from South-eastern in 1993. He is the proud father ofdaughters, Malorie (12) and Macie (8).Langlois married the former Yvette Miller inMay 2008 and the couple welcomed theirfirst son, Jacques, in February 2011.

The renovation of North Oak Park has been one of Langlois’ top accomplishments

ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATIONATHLETICS ADMINISTRATION

Southeastern Louisiana University

Bart Bellairs was named the 15th Di-

rector of Athletics at Southeastern

Louisiana University on Nov. 24,

2009 after serving in the same capacity at

Savannah State University.

A former senior athletics administrator at

Virginia Military Institute, Bellairs succeeds

Joel Erdmann, who took a similar position

at South Alabama.

At Southeastern, Bellairs will oversee 15

NCAA Division I affiliated programs that

compete in the Southland Conference.

Since joining the Southland in 1997, the

Lions have captured 22 regular-season or

tournament championships, including four

regular-season titles in women’s soccer,

three in women’s tennis, three in men’s golf

and two in men’s basketball. Southeastern

also claimed the Southland Men’s All-

Sports Trophy in 2008-09, highlighted by

the 2009 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

championship with the women’s soccer

team earning its first-ever berth to the

NCAA Championships.

Prior to his move to Hammond, Bellairs

was at Savannah State, an NCAA Division

I program, with 15 teams, since July 2008.

There he implemented an academics suc-

cess plan that included an academic “road

map” for each student-athlete from registra-

tion to graduation. He developed a Title

IX/Gender Equity program that involved re-

working the athletic budget to resolve long-

time problems with staffing, facilities and

scholarships. During his tenure at Savan-

nah State, football, men’s basketball, soft-

ball and women’s volleyball teams all saw

significant improvement in seasonal wins.

Prior to joining Savannah State, Bellairs

served as senior associate director of inter-

collegiate athletics from 2005 to 2008 and

head basketball coach from 1993 to 2005

at VMI in Lexington, Va. Responsibilities in-

cluded marketing and promotions, ticket op-

erations, management of the licensing

program and serving as director for all key

athletic facilities. There he created new pric-

ing strategies, athletic department promo-

tions and new revenue streams. As head

basketball coach, he was named the South-

ern Conference Coach of the Year, the Vir-

ginia Coach of the Year and the “Sports

Illustrated” Unknown Coach of the Year.

Bellairs also served as assistant basket-

ball coach at James Madison University in

Harrisonburg, Va., from 1988 to 1993,

where his teams saw one NCAA tourna-

ment appearance and five NIT appear-

ances; as assistant basketball coach at the

University of Massachusetts (1986-1988);

assistant basketball coach at the University

of Maryland (1984-1986); and head basket-

ball coach, head cross country coach and

assistant baseball coach at Wilkes College

in Wilkes Barre, Pa. (1983-1985).

He holds a Master of Science degree in

physical education and athletics administra-

tion from Western Illinois University and a

Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology/social

work from Warren Wilson College in

Asheville, N.C. Bellairs and his wife Jacki

have five children.
