Happy New Year SCACS Members!

2012 is promising to be another big year in our industry and in our state. I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season with friends and especially family!

Over the holidays however, your SCACS As-sociation team has been busy at work on your behalf. This year, we have concentrated on bringing you value for your time invested in the Association. On March 21st we will have our Merchandising 201 event that is being organized by Vice President Jack O’Malley and board member Phil Gramaglia. If you’ve ever wondered the best way to organize your store and increase your profitability per square foot then this is the event for you. From market-ing strategy to buying decisions, this program will give a non-biased look at some of the best practices and recent trends in operating, so whether you have one store or one thousand stores, I am positive you will benefit from Mer-chandising 201.

It wouldn’t be a spring in South Carolina with-out the annual SCACS Spring Golf Classic. It may just be me, but I can’t imagine April with-out the Masters, Cheerwine BBQ and our golf classic. We are returning to Timberlake Country Club this year and Jeff tells me the course is in fantastic shape!

Our industry is changing more everyday and all the markets in South Carolina are more com-petitive than ever before. Get involved with your Association, learn from your fellow mem-bers and not only survive but thrive in this new year! I hope to see you soon!

More than 90 Strong, SCACS Volunteer Leaders Set the Plan for 2012The recent Planning Conference set the tone for SCACS’ New Year. This year’s planning conference started with a Business Tune Up where members could sit in on seven different educational sessions to help with running their businesses better. Topics ranged from 10 Common Wage/Hour and Person-nel Problems to Employment Investigations to Third Party Assault Cases to Alcohol Training and an Up-date on the status of Bath Salts products. This was the second year that education sessions were held prior to the planning conference.

From education to fellowship, SCACS members know how to have a good time. Thanks to the culinary skills of a few of our own members, specifically Wayne Barlow of Jack Link’s Beef Jerky and John Barr of Swedish Match, members enjoyed a delicious low country boil and fellowshipped to some tunes played by our own deejay master, Brad Poe. Mem-bers adorned their favorite team colors and enjoyed games such as checkers, ladder ball, and Dance Dance Revolution (DDR).

The following morning, approximately 90 members gathered together to view the latest association vid-eo wrapping up our 2011 Summer Convention. Many were able to point to themselves and their families in the video. This helped get members in the mood to sit down and plan and strategize for the upcoming year. For the following two hours, all eight commit-tees worked together creating their goals and objec-tives for moving the association forward in 2012.

From a great crowd of volunteer leaders came what we believe will no doubt be a record year of mem-bership, attendance, and participation. Many of our standard programs will be returning for 2012 such as Retail Day, the annual, family-friendly convention and educational programs, such as Merchandising 201 and Fall Business Tune Up and legislative video updates. New in 2012 – a social breakfast at the SE Petro Show and other social events as well as some changes in the Planning Conference format for 2012.

Stay tuned and mark your calendars now for many of the events that are already planned. (See a calen-dar of events included in this newsletter and on the website.) Thank you again to those companies that sponsored the Planning Conference. It was a success and has produced a great group of volunteer lead-ers!

Wednesday, January 25th marked another tremendously successful

SCACS Retail Day at the State House, as dozens of retail-ers and supplier members worked the State House lobby and halls

of the Capital Complex led by SCACS President Kenneth Cosgrove, SCACS Legislative Committee Co-Chairman Brad Poe, SCACS Staffer Rachel Beacham

and SCACS lobbyist Robert Adams. The SCACS grassroots team met with Gover-nor Nikki Haley and key legislative leaders including longtime SCACS ally House Ways &

Means Chairman Brian White (R - Anderson), House LCI Chairman Bill Sandifer (R - Oconee), House Judiciary Chairman Jim Harrison (R - Richland), Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler (R -

Cherokee), Senate Majority Whip Danny Verdin (R - Laurens), Sen. Shane Martin (R - Spartanburg) and others.

Thanks again for the tremendous grassroots support shown by SCACS retailers and supplier members.

SCACS Retail Day has grown over the years from initial small groups of 12-15 to as many as 90 participants in recent years. This outstanding effort on your part has been a key to our association’s effectiveness in

achieving our legislative goals over the years.

Our grassroots team spoke to legislators about tax policy, government regulations, the proposed change in the way “little cigars” are taxed and other key issues for our membership. Another objective of each SCACS Retail

Day is to establish new relationships with legislators, while continuing to foster longstanding friendships.

The relationships we have cultivated with members of the General Assembly over the years through SCACS Retail Day are invaluable to SCACS when we have an issue arise that requires our membership to swing

into action with grassroots calls, e-mails and in-person visits with legislators.

Thanks again for taking time from your busy schedule to travel to the State House again this year for SCACS Retail Day!

“The 8 Top Retail and Wholesale Money-Makers To Do Right Now for Bigger Profits”

8:30-9:30 am, Feb. 29, 2012, SE Petro-Food Marketing. Expo

In our super competitive industry, every marketer craves that competitive edge to crush the competition. Based on in-depth consulting with all sizes and sectors of petro marketers over the past two decades, plus her extensive business valuation and brokerage practice where she sees all the real numbers, Betsi Bixby will reveal to you the best eight ways any marketer, no matter how profitable right now, can make more money almost immediately. You may be doing one or two, maybe as many as

five or even seven of them if you are tearing it up, but just missing even one means lost profits. Walk away from this session knowing exactly how to make your successful business even better, boosting your bottom line as quickly as next week!

About Betsi…A professional financial sharp shooter, Betsi Bixby is well known for the valuable knowledge and experience she brings to petroleum consulting. With an MBA in Corporate Finance and experience as a Former VP of Commercial Lending at a major regional bank, Betsi has been applying her extensive financial knowledge and experience to the petroleum industry for the better part of two decades.

Betsi clarifies and simplifies complicated subjects into concrete step-by-step processes that dramatically im-pact company performance and profits. Through her monthly Money Matters column published by the Petro-leum Marketers Association of America (PMAA), and her PetroAnswers.com website, Betsi has become the most widely read expert in the Petroleum industry over the past two decades. She is also a member of the National Petroleum News (NPN) and SIGMA IGM Editorial Advisory Boards.

Each year since 1992, hundreds of petroleum marketers have attended Betsi’s hard-hitting workshop, now dubbed “The Best Workshop in the Industry.” She is familiar with most major refiners, conducting regular an-nual training sessions for the industry’s biggest brands. In addition, she formerly ran a financial study group for Exxon’s lubricants master jobbers prior to their merger with Mobil. She captivates convention audiences throughout the U.S. with her “20 Ways to Increase Cash Flow” and other hard-hitting, practical programs with take-away audience value. Her most requested recent topic is “Growth through Acquisitions,” a seminar that focuses on common merger and acquisition pitfalls. In response to customer demand, Betsi began Me-ridian’s highly successful Valuation and Brokerage division in late 1999. Betsi and Meridian quickly earned a reputation for accurate valuations and have continued to achieve great success, facilitating highly confidential sales of family-owned petroleum companies.

With Christ-centered personal ethics, Betsi Bixby strives to be a blessing to her customers, her employees and the industry she loves. Betsi currently resides in Weatherford, Texas where she enjoys a ranching life-style with her husband, best friend, and soul mate Nick Bixby.

Betsi will speak on Wednesday morning, February 29, 2012, from 8:30 am to 9:30 am. You can then visit with her in Booth 1408 during the show. Make plans now to attend the SE Petro-Food Marketing Expo!

1. When and how did you get started with Core-Mark International? It seems like yesterday, but it has been 11 years since I began my career as a vacation relief salesperson at Core-Mark. As a vacation relief I worked in all areas of the Division; it was a perfect position to gain exposure to each facet of the wholesale business. Just like so many others I was hooked by the

ever evolving convenience industry; I knew there would never be a boring day on the job!

2. What are the challenges you currently face in the industry? I don’t believe we are any different than retailers, vendors or fellow wholesalers in that we are all facing downward pressure on margins and increased expenses due to recent or forthcoming legislation. The reason I enjoy our industry and those involved is that together we can and will find solutions to overcome these chal-lenges. If you’re in this business, you must be like me and enjoy a challenge! One of my sales managers told me, “The easiest way to find a solution is to tell Chad it can’t be done.”

3. What has been your biggest success? Without a doubt it would be my family; they are what drives me to never be satisfied and strive for excellence. Professionally it would be a similar answer. I’m extremely proud and driven by the team or family we have here at Core-Mark Atlanta. They create the opportunity for im-measurable success and make Core-Mark great!

4. How did you become involved in SCACS? Core-Mark has been in business more than 120 years, but is a relative new comer to the Southeast. As we entered the market and met with retailers and vendor partners, both highly recommended SCACS for political action and networking opportunities. We signed up and I’ve never looked back. It is a pleasure to work with such a strong and well organized association.

5. What is your advice to fellow SCACS members about working through the current economy? Simply put, work together. As one of my colleagues always says, “Together we are smarter than any one of us alone.” Now is the time for transparent, honest and direct communication. We must leverage partner-ships, knowledge and capabilities to find outside the box solutions utilizing “current” assets. Executing these strategies will combat downward market trends, increase profits and reduce expenses. 6. Why is SCACS membership important to you?SCACS enables us to have a voice. The association and its leaders provide platforms to participate and gain face time with decision makers in multiple arenas. As the old saying goes, “If you’re not at the table you’re on the menu.” Through SCACS we’re given the opportunity to be at the table and weigh in on whether it’s fish or chicken tonight.

RETAILER SPOTLIGHTTerrill Tuten - Anderson Oil Co.

1. When and how did you get started in the convenience store industry?I started work with Anderson Oil Co., Inc. on November 23, 1981. The owner was Thomas R. Jackson, whom I had met at church, in March 1981. Mr. Jackson called me one day and wanted to meet with me. I had no idea what he wanted, but assumed, it was something to do with our church. I was WRONG! He had just bought out an oil competitor and was looking for someone to help

him. We made a deal, and 30 years later, I am still here.

2. What are the challenges you currently face in your c-stores?Inventory control or lack there of. Whether it is (1) theft,(2) out of product, (3) waste, or (4) poor hiring procedures, which heavily contributes to the first three inventory prob-lems, these all have a negative effect on the bottom line.

3. What has been your biggest success? My biggest success has definitely been my wife, Sarie. She has always been the one to calm me down, which I think has allowed me to make better decisions. She has helped me gain a lot of patience and maybe a little compassion.

4. How did you become involved in SCACS?In 1991, I decided to take over the operation of several of our convenience stores that we had been leasing out since 1981. As the other store leases expired, I simply did not renew them. All new stores that I built were built for me to operate. Several of the dealers who had leased my stores were members of SCACS and encouraged me to join.

5. What is your advice to fellow SCACS members about working through the current economy? Currently, the economy. I mean, WOW, do we even have an economy? I learned in an economics class that economy is “the frugal use of money.” Economy is not being prac-ticed in this country. So my advice is to be frugal with YOUR MONEY because no one else will be.

6.Why is SCACS membership important to you?I believe that SCACS is most important to me because of the relationships that has been built between store opera-tors, suppliers, and government officials.

SCACS TO CONDUCT FOOD DRIVE FOR HARVEST HOPE

The Public Relations Commit-tee of SCACS is conducting a

Food Bank drive to support the families of South Carolina in the months of December 2011 and January 2012 , the contribution

is tax deductible.

In order to participate, your company may collect donations of $1 per card signed, that is available in the store. Each company that wishes to be a

part of this drive will receive 100 cards and a sign for your store. The association will send you 100 cards and a sign; all you need to do

is ask. You may send the contribution to: Harvest Hope Food Bank, PO Box 451, Columbia, SC 29202. (Please let the association know that you’d like to participate and provide them with a street address for

delivery of the cards and sign).

Vendors can also participate in the Food Drive by sending contributions to the above address or distribut-ing cards for us, or you can collect monies or food in your organization. Remember to let SCACS know if

you have been a part of the drive.

Wholesalers: You can play a very important part of this drive. The retailers that you service may want to collect food or clothing. If they do, you would need to assist in the collection of the food or clothing and help get it to the food banks. We will talk to you as the retailers agree to collect food/clothing and see if you can help with the pickup. Another way that you can help would be to contact your manufac-turers that product food and ask for donations to the food banks. Certainly some would be glad to do

that. Ask your buyers to follow up with those manufacturers.

The need is greater than ever. Please help your association with this drive and help the hungry in SC, especially over the winter months. Please contact the association headquarters or Dean Cline (828-3289-4263) ([email protected]) or Steve Kirby (828-328-5511)([email protected])

if you decide to help.

It’s a Great Day in South Carolina!

That’s the message that members of the South Carolina Convenience Stores Association heard when

they were greeted by Governor Nikki Haley on a recent visit to the state capital.

Governor Haley stressed the importance of job creation, tort reform, lowering taxes, and guaranteeing that

South Carolina remains the strongest “Right to Work” state in the nation. The members were excited to meet with the

Governor, and she was proud to say the value of the S. C. Association of Convenience Stores continues to grow.

District #37 which is includes the Boiling Springs and Inman areas, was honored to meet with your members. It

was especially wonderful to look out and see the faces of people that I know and respect. Your past president, David

Jordan, has been a longtime leader in helping to create and maintain hundreds of jobs. I was also personally proud to

see my friend, Joe Williams, who is leading a new facility in the ice production and delivery business. Just a personal

note: don’t expect to beat Joe in golf… he is a great player!

I want to stress the importance and value of what your members do in providing jobs for our families,

collecting taxes for the betterment of our state, helping related businesses remain successful, and thereby giving

people hope.

In closing, I would like to say to the members that all of you do so many personal acts of kindness that people

never hear about. You provide help to the homeless and hungry, safe facilities for our youth and their activities, and

much more.

Thank you for all you do for our state and nation. It is a great day in South Carolina!
