January 4, 2012
Dear Members of the La Salle Hockey Program,
Happy New Year and welcome to the Holiday Classic! I want to congratulate Head Coach Wally Muehlbronner, his assistant coaches, and all the members of the La Salle Varsity Hockey Team on their participation in what is truly an historic event for not only La Salle College High School, but the city of Philadelphia.
Throughout the years, you have established La Salle College High School as one of the more formidable hockey programs in the State of Pennsylvania and your participation in this game is a testament to your hard work and determination. You now have the opportunity to showcase your talent outdoors, under the lights, and at one of the most celebrated athletic venues in America. I have no doubt that your level of play and sportsmanship will be a shining example of the student athletes here at La Salle College High School. Please know that the La Salle community is cheering for you today and always.
It is an honor to be sharing the ice with Malvern Prep, another school with a long and storied tradition of academic excellence and success on the ice. I am sure that today’s game will be filled with mutual respect and skilled competition.
I would like to thank all of the parents for your dedication to the La Salle Hockey Program and your support of this game. I would also like to thank you for entrusting La Salle with your sons and their talents. Without your support, this game and the success of our program would not be possible.
I wish you the best of luck today as well as the remainder of your season.
Go Explorers!
Sincerely yours,
Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 President La Salle College High School

Founded over 150 years ago by the Christian Brothers, La Salle boys are taught to be critical thinkers who are well prepared academically, able to communicate effectively, and lead confidently. Within the academic program one will find the collective work of over one hundred full-time faculty members (student to faculty ratio of 11:1) who are grounded in the mission of Lasallian education, while at the same time, understand the rigorous demands of a college preparatory school. La Salle offers twenty Advanced Placement (AP) courses and last year boasted 98 AP Scholars (students who earned a qualifying score of 3 or higher in three or more AP exams), including eight National Scholars. In 2009, La Salle received the prestigious Siemens Award for Advanced Placement from the College Board and the Siemens Foundation. La Salle was the only high school in the State of Pennsylvania to receive the award as one of the top Advanced Placement programs in the nation for math, science, and technology. La Salle’s current senior class features twenty-seven students who have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program – including thirteen Semifinalists – which is the most among any private or Catholic high school in the State of Pennsylvania. 99% of last year’s graduating class went on to college and 73% of the Class of 2011 earned scholarships and/or grants, which totaled over $25.5 million. The sport of hockey at LaSalle had its birth in the early 1970’s when it was formed as a club sport practicing at the Wissahickon Skating Club and played only non-league games. At the time, hockey was not highly regarded as a sport by any school, including La Salle. As a result, the team was not allowed to use the LaSalle name and skated as the “Springfield Township Explorers”.
In the mid seventies, the Explorers joined the Suburban High School Hockey League (SHSHL) which then operated out of the Wintersport Arena in Willow Grove. Still known as the Springfield Township Explorers, the team was allowed to wear the official school colors, blue and gold and played against such rivals as Abington, Plymouth Whitemarsh, Upper Dublin, Roxborough, William Tennent, Archbishop Wood, Bishop McDevitt, Council Rock, Upper Moreland, Lower Moreland, and Germantown Academy.
In 1976, the team was at last allowed to use the school name though it remained a club sport. As a show of appreciation, the team adopted the block “L” as its logo, replacing the golden arrow which had previously appeared on jerseys. For the first time, a Junior Varsity program was added.
By the late seventies, the Suburban League had grown to thirty teams arranged into four divisions. LaSalle was grouped with Roxborough, North Catholic, and traditional rival, Bishop McDevitt. In 1978-79, the team made its first appearance in the playoffs, losing in a valiant effort to a powerful Abington team. That same year, LaSalle participated in a new Catholic League sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. LaSalle joined McDevitt, Ryan, Bonner, North Catholic and Cardinal Dougherty to form the league, but despite strong interest in an all Catholic High School League, unresolved problems, not the least of which was the lack of support by the administrations of the schools, caused the league to fold after one season.
The arrival of the 1985-86 season saw a dramatic change in the LaSalle program. At odds with the disrupted Suburban League, LaSalle opted to join the newly formed Northern Scholastic Hockey League (NSHL), which operated out of Wintersport. LaSalle joined North Penn, Abington, Archbishop Wood, and now reestablished William Tennent as charter members of the Northern League. Unfortunately,
LaSalle’s first year of varsity play in the Northern League would also be its last. After another year of player shortages and a losing season in 1986-87, there was a movement to disband the club. Finally, it was decided to compete on the J.V. level and stay in the Northern League. The 1987-88 season ended two years of Junior Varsity competition and the beginning of a new league affiliations.
For the 1988-89 season, the Explorers joined the Inter County Scholastic Hockey League (ICSHL). Though the first season of Inter County league play would result in only one win, a core group of players was assembled that would begin the rebirth of ice hockey at LaSalle. In 1989-90 the team took the ice with a new coach, alumnus Peter Nolan. Armed with a new confidence, the team posted a winning record and missed the playoffs by one point. It would be the last time a LaSalle team would fail to make the playoffs! Now skating both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams, the Explorers were poised for success in 1990-91. The 1990-91 team posted as impressive regular ICSHL season, losing only three times in fifteen outings. A winning tradition was beginning, and there was a growing pool of talented players in the club.
The 1992-93 season saw the inauguration of the popular “Friday Nighters” at the “House of Pain”, better known as Wintersport. The team also began to play an annual Alumni game and a charity game at Christmas. A second consecutive undefeated ICSHL regular season followed, as did trips to the League Championship Game and the Flyers’ Cup Tournament. Off-ice, the Explorers gained their most important victory; full recognition as a varsity sport, one of the few school supported hockey programs in the Delaware Valley. LaSalle Hockey had truly arrived.
Throughout the 90’s and 2000’s the LaSalle Hockey program has consistently been one of the top teams in Eastern PA. Program numbers have remained very strong averaging 60 – 80 players per season. Healthy rivalries against Malvern Prep, Cardinal O’Hara, Father Judge and Holy Ghost Prep form the backbone of the “AAA” League schedule. La Salle’s non-league schedule is excellent and the most challenging of any HS hockey program in the state. Current and recent NL opponents include: Hill School, PA

Two of the premier schools in the area, fielding tonight two of the region’s premier hockey teams, as part of a singular series of great games in this outdoor venue which will not be repeated for years to come—this is the stuff of legends. Tonight is not just one of the storied events in the histories of the LaSalle and Malvern hockey programs. Tonight, we celebrate one of the storied events in the history of Pennsylvania high school hockey.
To our players, I would like to suggest this thought, paraphrased from the comments of an alumnus several years ago: When you skate out onto that ice tonight, know who you are skating for, and
who you are skating with. You are skating for your brothers, the Malvern Prep student body, and the whole Malvern Prep community. And you are skating with everyone who has ever worn that jersey. You skate tonight with all those former Friars who never had the opportunity that stands before you tonight.
So let the game begin. Malvern vs. LaSalle. Two great schools. Two great traditions. Two great teams. One great game. No regrets.
Go Friars!

In a few short years the Winter Classic has become the biggest event of the NHL regular season. This year’s Winter Classic in Philadelphia is more than just a game; it is a weeklong
celebration of this great sport. Hockey requires great dedication. My teammates and I have been playing this game most of our lives. For each player this event is sure to be the highlight of his hockey career.
The entire team is very excited about playing in the Hockey Holiday Classic. We are proud to represent our team, Malvern Prep, and high school hockey in this unique event. A heartfelt thanks to our families, Coach Mackell, Fr. Flynn, Mr. Stewart, the athletic department at Malvern Prep, and the Philadelphia Flyers for making this possible. We look forward to an exciting rematch of last year’s Flyer Cup Final.

Malvern Memories “Playing in my first game EVER as goalie on ice against the vastly superior Lower Merion squad when a penalty shot is awarded to Jay Snider (son of Ed Snider) who promptly undresses me and scores the easiest goal of his career. I would have had a better chance stopping him if I had been sitting on the bench!” -Ed Costantini, Malvern Player, ‘73
"I can't believe it's been 25 years since our team took an undefeated regular season into the Flyers Cup tournament and won the first of what would be eight Flyers Cup Championships for Malvern Prep. Our 1987 team had a plethora of talent and personality. Good luck in the Hockey Classic Malvern and enjoy this moment as I’m sure you’ll look back twenty-five years from now with fantastic memories etched in your mind as I do of my Malvern Ice Hockey experience.” -Mike Shrader, Malvern Player, ‘87
"Loved playing before the packed house of Malvern faithful as we won the Flyers Cup and headed to Pittsburgh to win the State Championship....GO FRIARS!" -Keith Grimley, Malvern Captain, ‘90
“One of my favorite memories of coaching @ Malvern Prep was the time we beat Bonner. We were not expected to win however our boys played their hearts out and I will never forget when Ed Burshich sealed the game with a top shelf shot into an open net. Malvern Prep and the players that I coached and people that I met will always have a special place in my heart.” - Jim McCrossin, Malvern Coach, ‘93-‘95
“It makes sense that a team so rich in history makes history with this great event. These young hockey players stand on the shoulders of many great hockey players that have come before them. These players also stand in the spotlight illuminated for all future players to look up to. Make your teammates proud, make your coaches proud, and make you school proud. GO Friars!” -Dave Hendricks, Malvern Captain, ‘94-‘96

When I played for the school I will never forget the games at the Skatium in Havertown, especially against Bonner. Having the stands packed with people and the excitement that surrounded us was amazing.” -Kevin McCrossin, Malvern Captain, ‘96

“My Malvern teammates are still some of my closest friends, the bonds we have will continue for a lifetime. When we are on break we still get together soon after getting back home hoping for a cold spell for some pond hockey. Playing in the first Holiday Classic is a tremendous honor, seize the moment, make it special, compete hard! Go Friars!!” -Chris Putsch, Malvern Captain, ‘08-‘09 “My favorite Malvern hockey moment was experiencing the support and dedication of the Malvern community while playing in the Flyers Cup back to back years.” - Tommy Kane, Malvern Captain, '10-'11
"I will never forget the memories I share with my teammates and all Malvern Ice Hockey Alumni. This is one game you will remember forever. Go Friars!!" -Ryan Kavanaugh, Malvern Captain, ‘11
“I will never forget the pride I felt when we knocked LaSalle out of the 99 Flyers Cup in front of the entire school, our families and alumni. It still gives me Goosebumps to this day. This is a moment that you'll all share as a team for the rest of your lives make the most of it. Our Lady of Victory Pray for Us!” -Joe Hooker, Malvern Captain, ‘97-‘99
“It is hard to think of one memory that stands out. I can tell you that there is something special about the school and the people who are part of it. When I played for the school I will never forget the games at the Skatium in Havertown, especially against Bonner. Having the stands packed with people and the excitement that surrounded us was amazing.” -Kevin McCrossin, Malvern Captain, ‘96
"Play every game like it's your last and keep the winning tradition alive with a win at the Bank and a Flyer's Cup in 2012!" -Tim Wochok, Malvern Captain, ’01-‘02
"Beating LaSalle in the 2002 Meadville tournament remains one of my favorite hockey memories from my time at Malvern" - Andreas Wochtl, Malvern Captain, ‘03
