Welcome to MusicFest Vancouver August 10 – 19, 2012

“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” Bob Marley

Music hit me early on. It has the power to express both joy and pain, but it can also console and heal. I may have learned this as a treble chorister, or as a budding band member. By the time I entered university, I knew that a music career was in my future, in a role that could reach out to a wider

audience. I’ve been fortunate to work as a programmer and producer with CBC Radio for more than thirty years, and now have joined the team of dedicated music enthusiasts that present MusicFest Vancouver.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to what promises to be another wide-ranging and entertaining 10 days of concerts. You’ll notice a bit of a Brazilian theme in the year. You can celebrate one of the most universal and versatile of instruments, the guitar, and be introduced to two fabulous new MusicFest Vancouver venues: Pyatt Hall and the Orpheum Annex. You can also mark some significant musical anniversaries: the 150th of Debussy’s birth, an organ centenary, and 75 years since Gershwin’s death.

A world of music awaits you. So pause your player – mute your phone – attend a concert – and see with your own ears how a live musical performance can hit you – it’s like you’re there!

INDUSTRIAL ALLIANCE INSIDE THE MUSIC SERIES

Free! Feel free to get closer to the artists and programming you’re bound to enjoy at MusicFest Vancouver. Take the opportunity to expand your musical knowledge and appreciation with a great mix of events covering classical, contemporary and jazz genres. Why does the instrumental combination of violin, cello and piano have a history stretching from Haydn’s era right up until the present day? How does a composer draw inspiration from words, which were in turn inspired by images from a distant culture? What does a jazz pianist listen for when improvising at the keyboard? These events take the form of lecture / demonstrations and while they are not concert performances, they do offer fascinating insights into other MusicFest Vancouver events.

Gabrieli’s Venice: A Polychoral VespersAlexander Weimann music director

Les Voix Baroques and La Rose des Vents

Giovanni Gabrieli’s sonorous compositions for separated choirs, strings, and brass greatly influenced the development of western classical music. Now Montréal’s Les Voix Baroques and La Rose des Vents have created a compelling homage to the composer: a Marian Vespers rooted in the polychoral traditions of Venice.

Join us as we commemorate the 400th anniversary of Gabrieli’s death, and celebrate his life and work in the best possible way: with a remarkable concert by stunning singers and ten leading early music instrumentalists.

Casavant Frères: 100 Years of Good VibrationsSelf-described “organblaster” Michael Dirk showcases the mighty Casavant Frères Opus 485 pipe organ in a lighthearted performance to mark its centenary. Exactly 100 years ago – August 11, 1912 – the doors of Chalmers Presbyterian Church (now Holy Trinity) opened at the corner of Hemlock and 12th, and the first chords resounded from the 2,271 pipes of this historic instrument. This celebratory concert includes works by J.S. Bach, a tribute to Virgil Fox’s “Heavy Organ” tours from the ‘70’s, Healey Willan’s magnum opus Introduction, Passacaglia and Fugue, Denis Bedard’s Variations on “Old Hundredth” – plus improvisations to a Laurel & Hardy silent movie, complete with popcorn for the audience! Schweizer Klaviertrio: Chamber GemsPiano Trio in C Major, KV 548 Wolfgang Amadeus MozartMoments Musicaux (excerpts) Rudolf Kelterborn Litaniae, Op.70 Paul JuonPiano Trio No.2 in C Major, Op.87 Johannes Brahms

The Swiss Piano Trio is one of the most acclaimed chamber ensembles of its generation. MusicFest Vancouver is pleased to welcome these three outstanding musicians to their final stop in a cross-Canada tour, following performances for Ottawa’s Chamberfest and Parry Sound’s Festival of the Sound. Pianist Martin Lucas Staub, violinist Angela Golubeva and cellist Sébastien Singer have chosen a playful work by Mozart to begin their program before introducing Vancouver audiences to two Swiss composers. Rudolf Kelterborn’s Moments Musicaux are brief and witty pieces written in 2006, while Paul Juon’s neo-Romantic tone poem Litaniae, Op.70 dates from 1920. The sweeping romanticism of Brahms’ Piano Trio No.2 in C Major closes the concert in grand style. Known for its power and clarity, this work abounds in gorgeous melody and is one of the most popular pieces in the trio repertoire.

GUITAR DAY

Last fall, classical guitarist Daniel Bolshoy gave the inaugural solo recital at Pyatt Hall, at the new VSO School of Music on Seymour Street. The hall (see page 30) is a sonic and visual gem, designed by acoustician John O’Keefe with Mike Hill and Doug Nelson from Bingham Hill Architects, and perfectly suited as a showcase for acoustic guitarists. We invite MusicFest audiences to discover its pleasures for themselves in three hour-long concerts in solo, duo and trio configurations.

Music of Our TimeRalph Maier | Murray Visscher | Brad Mahon

Formed in 2007 by faculty members at Mount Royal University Conservatory in Calgary, the trio shares its passion for contemporary works for three guitars with a focus on Canadian composers.

Guitar EncountersCelso Machado has been described as “a one man compendium of Brazilian diversity who doubles as a guitarist and percussionist par excellence.” Ed Henderson is a composer, arranger and musical director, singled out for his “fleet-fingered playing [and] dazzling display of low-key acoustic virtuosity.” Two of Vancouver’s most versatile guitarists share musical views that have a global perspective.

BrasileirasDaniel Bolshoy guitar | Ariel Barnes cello

There’s more to Brazilian music than the Bossa Nova! Two outstanding soloists come together for a program that includes a sonata by Radamés Gnatalli, a work that is an enchanting mix of Brazilian folk and classical themes. There’s also music by Villa-Lobos, Luiz Bonfá and others.

Quartango: Tangos from the Barrios to the BallroomStéphane Aubin piano | Jonathan Goldman bandoneón René Gosselin double bass | Chantal Simard percussion Antoine Bareil violin

When classically trained musicians come together to explore their passion for tango, the result is nothing short of delightful. Quartango takes tango in new directions, with impeccable arrangements, subtle and unexpected allusions to classical music, and a liberal dose of humour, all woven together by the elegant interplay of ensemble playing at its best.

Quartango’s program ranges from the classic tangos to tango nuevo and Piazzolla. They also explore other genres, from jazz and opera to waltzes and jigs, in their own inimitable style. Quartango has charmed audiences across Canada and the United States, and in Tokyo, Taipei, Paris and São Paulo. They stole the show at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops, and have also appeared with the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Orchestre Métropolitain.

Legends: The Whitening of the Ox & The FirebirdMusicFest Vancouver is proud to present the Turning Point Ensemble in Legends, a performance that incorporates multi-media components in a compelling musical response to works of the past. Jeffrey Ryan’s recent commission is based on The Whitening of the Ox (Inside the Zen Ox Pictures) by Canadian poet K.V. Skene. This extended vocal/instrumental work incorporates 15th-century illustrations by Tensho Shubun of a Chinese fable, and features Canadian baritone Tyler Duncan. Just as an Oxherd domesticates a beast, the series depicts the Zen Buddhist concept representing the taming of the disordered mind and the ultimate attainment of enlightenment.

Stravinsky’s landmark ballet score The Firebird undergoes a metamorphosis at the hand of BC composer Michael Bushnell (from TPE’s Rio Tinto Alcan Performing Arts Award winning production). It is inspired by a Russian legend about the adventures of young prince Ivan and his search for the most beautiful bird in the world: The Firebird.

Cristina Braga with Ricardo Medeiros & Sal Ferreras: Harpa Bossa JazzFrom the tropical beaches of Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s, a “new beat” started a musical craze. A sensual mixture of Brazilian rhythms, American jazz and Portuguese lyrics, Bossa Nova became an international sensation, and Stan Getz’s 1964 recording of The Girl from Ipanema with João & Astrud Gilberto spent 96 weeks on the US charts! At home in both popular and classical music, Cristina Braga is principal harpist with the Rio de Janeiro Symphony and has worked as a soloist with many ensembles. She is a compelling vocalist with a deep melancholy in her voice that seems specially carved for the compositions of Tom Jobim, Luiz Bonfá, Roberto Menescal and other masters of Música Popular Brasileira.

Bergmann Piano Duo & Gamelan Si Pawit: Ancient Cultures New SoundsIn the 1930s, the Montreal-born composer Colin McPhee fell in love with the music of Bali. His passion led him to remain there for several years, studying the music and composing. The piano duo (and musical couple) of Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann explore some of the Balinese music that McPhee transcribed for two pianos decades before “world music” became widespread. They’ll also present music of similar inspiration, and team up with Vancouver Community College’s Gamelan Si Pawit, for a work that juxtaposes gongs with Glenn Gould and the Goldberg Variations! The entrancing sounds of tuned metallophones, drums, gongs and xylophones that make up the Sundanese gamelan will also resound in a travelogue of new sonic destinations.

Gryphon Trio: Beethoven’s BestPiano Trio “Ghost”, Op.70, No.1 | Piano Trio “Archduke”, Op.97

The internationally acclaimed all-Canadian Gryphon Trio makes its MusicFest Vancouver debut with an all-Beethoven program featuring two of the composer’s best-loved works. The Largo of Op.70 contains shimmering piano tremolos and a ghoulish atmosphere that Beethoven’s star pupil Carl Czerny called “an appearance from the underworld,” hence the nickname “The Ghost”. The “Archduke” trio is not only Beethoven’s masterpiece in the genre but also one of his finest lyrical achievements. Through its highly refined, dynamic performances, the Gryphon Trio has firmly established itself as one of the world’s pre-eminent piano trios. MusicFest Vancouver is pleased to feature the consummate artistry of this renowned ensemble in three diverse programs (see pages 31 & 32).

“The Gryphon Trio is one of the best ensembles in the world, consistently making music of rare excellence.” The Globe and Mail, Toronto

Jayme Stone makes music inspired by folk traditions from around the world. His latest album, Room of Wonders, includes works from Norway, Sweden, Bulgaria, Brazil, Italy and North America. His backpack must be overflowing with sheet music, ranging from Bach’s French Suites, to a Moorish sword-fighting dance to his own lush, original works. His JUNO Award-winning albums both defy and honor the banjo’s long role in the world’s music, turning historical connections into compelling music. In a specially selected set for MusicFest Vancouver, this world-traveller will include many classical transcriptions, including arias, two-part inventions and fugues by J.S. Bach, as well as a passepied by Claude Debussy.

Pacific Baroque Orchestra

Early Music Vancouver presents a thrilling opera-in-concert performance featuring Vancouver’s own Pacific Baroque Orchestra and an all-star cast of early music singers. Premiered in 1733, Orlando was composed at the height of Handel’s operatic powers, and this performance is the embodiment of his genius. Musically remarkable, emotionally gripping, and performed with consummate skill: it’s the summer early music event you won’t want to miss.

PYATT HALL & ORPHEUM ANNEX

In Vancouver’s long and celebrated history, the city block bounded by Robson, Granville, Smithe and Seymour streets has been an entertainment mecca. The Orpheum Theatre still reigns as the Grand Dame of the city’s theatres, but right next door stand two new venues that add a great deal to the musical life of the city. MusicFest Vancouver extends a welcoming invitation to see and hear what the Orpheum Annex and Pyatt Hall have to offer audiences who appreciate great music in intimate venues.

Alan and Gwendoline Pyatt Hall is housed in the VSO School of Music (843 Seymour), Western Canada’s newest music school, where students of all ages and abilities can enjoy lifelong learning in unique engagement with the musicians and guest artists of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. The Hall is a warm and inviting 120-seat space with convenient access to the school’s many amenities. The state-of-the-art School combines unique learning opportunities with the benefits of 21st Century technology and acoustics. Pyatt Hall’s acoustics are clear and detailed, warm and welcoming – ideal for the subtleties of a classical recital. On August 12th, Pyatt Hall will be your destination for Guitar Day programming (see page 14).

A few doors north of the School (and the new Capitol Residences building) lies the entrance to the Orpheum Annex (823 Seymour). Tucked up on the 2nd floor, the lobby looks over Seymour Street. Inside, the Annex is an acoustically-superior, 200-seat space that provides a welcoming environment for plays, dance performances, recitals, chamber music and mid-sized ensembles. On August 16th, MusicFest Vancouver presents vocalist Patricia O’Callaghan and the Gryphon Trio in their acclaimed Broken Hearts & Madmen project (see page 31).

Gryphon Trio with Patricia O’Callaghan: Broken Hearts & MadmenThe Gryphon Trio teams up with vocalist Patricia O’Callaghan (hailed by Billboard as “the most promising cabaret performer of her generation”) to present their genre-stretching concert of songs and tangos from the Americas. O’Callaghan trained as an opera singer but was soon drawn to the music of Leonard Cohen and Kurt Weill. A multilingual performer who has recorded everything from Erik Satie to Bob Dylan, O’Callaghan fell in love with Hispanic music while living in Mexico as a teenager.

The engaging program for Broken Hearts & Madmen includes songs by Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, Lhasa de Sela, Laurie Anderson, Elvis Costello, Astor Piazzolla and more, and showcases the Gryphon Trio at its adventurous and groundbreaking best. Beautiful songs sung in an intimate cabaret setting by a renowned singer in collaboration with an internationally acclaimed piano trio – this is sure to be a festival highlight and seating is limited, so purchase early to avoid disappointment!

Gryphon Trio: Czech MastersPiano Trio in G minor, Op. 15 Bedr̆ ich SmetanaPiano Trio No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 90, “Dumky” Antonin Dvor̆ ák

A Bohemian rhapsody of romantic Czech music awaits you. Bedr̆ ich Smetana and Antonin Dvor̆ ák were the musical father figures who gave voice to the folk music of their native country in the Romantic era. Smetana is best known for his set of picturesque tone poems Má Vlast (“My country”). The heartfelt Piano Trio in G minor was without question Smetana’s first great masterpiece, and was much admired by Franz Liszt. In the 1860s, Smetana was also the director of the theatre orchestra in which the younger Antonin Dvor̆ ák dabbled as a violist. Thirty years later, Dvor̆ ák was an international celebrity, being wooed to teach in America. Before departing his homeland, he gave a forty-concert tour that featured his colourful Dumky Piano Trio, filled with “fleeting thoughts” of Czech folk songs and dances.

Donna Brown & Philippe Cassard: Ariettes oubliéesForgotten songs to fête Debussy’s 150th

As an interpreter of Debussy’s work, French pianist Philippe Cassard has impeccable credentials, having recorded the composer’s complete piano works. He has also frequently partnered with singers such as Natalie Dessay, Stéphanie d’Oustrac and Canada’s own Donna Brown in recitals of French repertoire. MusicFest Vancouver reunites these deux bons amis in a recital of Debussy’s much admired settings of French texts. Debussy pushed back from being labeled “an impressionist” in music, and more clearly identified with the work of “symbolist” poets such as Paul Verlaine, Stéphane Mallarmé and Charles Baudelaire. From among Debussy’s much loved mélodies and song cycles, you’ll hear Ariettes oubliées, Fêtes Galantes, Deux Romances, and more.

Dress up for a grand night of seriously cool music as Pink Martini brings its lush ‘60s technicolor sound to a hot Vancouver summer night! The thirteen members of Pink Martini offer a highly polished blend of multilingual musical virtuosity in a combination of class and kitsch, swooning nostalgia, and deliriously romantic melodies to delight you. Pink Martini draws inspiration from the romantic Hollywood musicals of the 1940s or ‘50s with a more global perspective. Like musical archeologists digging through scores and recordings of years past, Pink Martini rediscovers beautiful songs – bridging the divide between high brow and pop culture.

“If the United Nations had a house band in 1962,” says Pink Martini’s bandleader and pianist, Thomas Lauderdale, “then hopefully we’d be that band.”

Carpe Diem String Quartet: Big Sky Big CityString Quartet Op. 96 “American” Antonin Dvor̆ ákFiddle Suite: Montana Korine Fujiwara and more…

From the time of its founding in 2005, Carpe Diem has won critical praise for its mastery of the classical chamber music canon, as well as its ability to expand upon the traditional string music repertoire. The group showcases works inspired by both rural and urban settings, including Dvor̆ ák’s much-loved American string quartet. It was written during Dvor̆ ák’s summer vacation in Spillville, Iowa, home to a community of Czech immigrants. Carpe Diem’s founding violist, Korine Fujiwara, is also a gifted composer and arranger. Raised amid the majestic scenery of Big Sky country, her Fiddle Suite: Montana depicts five favorite scenic spots in a work about family and tradition. Serving as a contrast will be music of George Gershwin and Duke Ellington, stretching from New York City’s Tin Pan Alley and Harlem to the hustle of Hollywood.

One of the great pillars of musical modernism, Debussy is “the composer without whose investigations of texture, colour, form and feeling, the vast majority of 20th century music could not have been written.” To mark the 150th anniversary of Debussy’s birth, MusicFest Vancouver is proud to welcome two of Debussy’s foremost exponents, French pianists Philippe Cassard and François Chaplin. In this recital for four hands and two pianos, the artists celebrate a genre that Debussy took immense pleasure in playing with friends throughout his life. Cassard and Chaplin will perform a program that includes the sensual Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, the jaunty Petite Suite, a recently rediscovered piano version of the Première Suite pour Orchestre, and more.

How Ticket Prices WorkTicket prices can sometimes be confusing, especially in this day and age of additional fees. At MusicFest Vancouver, we do our best to make our ticket prices as simple as possible. That’s why when you look in our Festival Guide or on our website, you’ll fi nd the prices are what you actually pay when you purchase tickets in person. No extra fees. No surprises.

The price you see includes HST, venue fees and ticket outlet service charges. For example, from an advertised ticket price of $49, MusicFest Vancouver takes home $37.72. That’s $11.28 we integrate into the price so you don’t get that unpleasant surprise when you go to pay for your tickets.

Please note: When you order tickets from Tickets Tonight by phone, Tickets Tonight adds a per order fee of around $5.00. Again, this fee is once per order, not per ticket, so we couldn’t build it into our listed ticket prices. Additionally, if you’d like your tickets to be mailed to you, there will be an additional charge of $3. This charge is once per order as well.
