BAiKieislAnDtOuRsThe reclamation of Baikie Island represents a rare accomplishment in the Pacific North West. This former industrial site has now been transformed into a nature reserve. It has been shortlisted twice for a national award in reclamation projects. You will be amazed at the diversity of the habitat and the unique life supported by the estuary. We are offering three tours; each with a different focus. There is no charge but you must pre-register by calling 250-923-7911. Deadline to register is 48 hours before the tour begins.

Baikie Island: turn right on to Robinson Road from Highway 19 (Sayward Highway), just after the traffic lights at Woodburn Road. Drive through the business area to the entrance to the park. Plenty of parking available.

treasuresoftheisland:ParentandChildtourThis outing will be suitable for parents with preschoolers and children in strollers. This is a great opportunity to introduce your children to our wonderful natural environment. Follow the trail to the Mill Pond and play games along the way like Nature Bingo and Colours of the Island. Dress for the outdoors. Led by Robin Williams; a specialist in outdoor education for children.

Wed Oct 3 10:30am-11:30am

Baikieisland-ReturntotheRiver:AdultOrientedtourThis relaxed tour is suitable for the older adult. Learn about the history of the reserve, the flora and the fauna that now inhabit a once industrial location. There will be a one hour tour followed by time to ask questions and more discussion from 11:30-noon. Dress for the weather and wear good walking shoes. Led by Jim Van Tine.

Tues Sept 18 10:3am-12noon

Baikieisland:theestuaryasnature'sBreadbasket:AdultOrientedtourThis tour will cover the whole reserve. There will be a guided tour of the area including the sections that cross the channels in the Campbell River. This should be prime time to watch the salmon returning to spawn. Dress for the weather and wear good walking shoes. Led by Jim Van Tine.

Sat Oct 13 10:30am-12noon

Jim Van Tine has been instrumental in the development of this reserve. He spent 35 years with Federal Fisheries, studying fish along the BC coast. He was the first Quinsam Hatchery manager and then moved on to become a specialist in watershed, estuaries and foreshore restoration. Technically he is now retired but continues to be closely involved in all aspects of the Baikie Island Reserve.

getmovingWeek(AllAges)September 29th, 2012 is officially Sports Day in Canada. The Strathcona Regional District and City of Campbell River are working with a number of community sports, recreation and active living groups to organize a Community Engagement week building up to the big day. This week will include a number of FREE SPORTS & ACTIVE RECREATION ACTIVITIES throughout the community. A detailed list of all of the opportunities available in the Campbell River area will be released on Sept. 10th – see below for a list of Strathcona Gardens activities.

➲ AboutthePowerofsportSport has the power to reduce crime, foster character and citizenship, introduce newcomers to their communities, stimulate the local economy, provide adult mentorship for young people, teach kids important life lessons and strengthen community connectedness. Unfortunately, sport participation is on the decline in our country. Over the past two decades, sport participation rates in Canadian youth aged 15 to 18 dropped from 77% to 59% - and in adults, from 45% to 28%. Over half of Canadian adults are considered inactive, and only 7% of our children and youth are active enough to meet Canada's Physical Activity Guidelines.

➲ JerseyDay-Friday,september28Back again as a popular part of the Sports Day celebrations, Friday, Sept. 28 is a national day to show your love and support for sport by wearing a jersey, team or club uniform to school, work or play. From municipal council chambers to the National Capital to news desks, office buildings and classrooms across the nation, we envision a sea of Canadians wearing their hearts on their sleeves on national Jersey Day.Dates: Week of Sept. 22-29, 2012 Sat., Sept 22 5:00-9:00pm Try Underwater Hockey & Water Volleyball Ages 7+ Sat., Sept 22 4:45-5:15pm Try Ice Quest Learn to Skate Lessons Ages 6+ Sat., Sept 22 5:30-6:15pm Try Little Rascals Hockey Lessons Ages 3-5 Sat., Sept 22 6:30-7:00pm Try Adult Learn to Play Hockey Lessons Ages 15+ Sun., Sept 23 12:30-4:00pm Try Synchronized Swimming & Lifesaving Sport Ages 7+ Mon., Sept 24 6:00-7:30pm Try Drop-in Skating (Leisure Ice) All Ages Mon., Sept 24 6:30-8:00pm Try Synchronized Swimming & Lifesaving Sport Ages 7+ Wed., Sept 26 6:30-8:00pm Try Underwater Hockey & Water Polo Ages 7+ Wed., Sept. 26 6:00-7:30pm Try Drop-in Skating (Leisure Ice) All Ages Fri., Sept. 28 6:30-8:00pm Try Surfing & Boogie Boarding Ages 7+ Fri., Sept. 28 ALL DAY JERSEY DAY All Ages Sat., Sept 29 5:00-9:00pm Try Underwater Hockey & Water Volleyball Ages 7+Cost: FREE for those willing to give it a try.
