THE GAME

Delaware State sticks into toe into the major college waters with a visit to reign-ing Big East champ Cincinnati at historic Nippert Field. The Hornets are 1-1 on the season. DSU is coming off a 38-14 loss to FCS #15 Delaware in the ―First State Rivalry‖ last Saturday. The Hornets outgained the Blue Hens by 71 yards and won the time of possession battle by nearly 11 minutes, but was undone by key mistakes in the contest. Delaware State was plagued by two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, a blocked field goal attempt and several costly penalties. The Hornets racked up 353 total yards in the contest, its best show-ing in four meetings against the Hens. DSU had 298 yards passing, but was held to 55 yards on the ground. Delaware recorded 282 total yards, its fewest in the four-game series against the Hornets. The Hens posted 155 yards passing and 127 rushing. DSU quarterback Nick Elko completed 35-of-50 passes for 298 yards and touchdown. Delaware State opened the year with a 17-10 last minute win over VMI on Sep. 1. Cincinnati opened its season with a 34-10 win over Big East rival Pittsburgh at Nippert Stadium on Sep. 6. The Bearcats scored a touchdown on their first play from scrimmage on a 58-yard run by George Winn and never looked back. UC led 14-0 after a touchdown with 10:04 left in the first quarter. Junior quarterback Munchie Legaux rushed for 117 yards and passed for 205 and two touchdowns in the contest. Winn added 95 yards on the ground.

DSU VS. UC, FBS OPPONENTS

This will be Delaware State‘s first contest against Cincinnati, although the Hor-nets have competed against a current member of the Big East conference. DSU played Connecticut in 1985 & ‗86 when the Huskies were a Division I-AA pro-gram. The Hornets won the first contest 24-14 in Storrs, Conn., and posted a 32-31 victory in Dover, Del., the following year. Delaware State is 1-1 vs. current Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams. The Hornets defeated Akron 52-26 in 1987. The Zips were coached by former Notre Dame head man and Ohio high school coaching legend Gerry Faust. It would be 22 years before DSU would face another FBS opponent. The Hornets‘ last contest against a major college team was a 63-6 loss to Michigan before 106,000 fans at Michigan Stadium in 2009. Current DSU starting quarterback Nick Elko made his first career start as a redshirt freshman in the Michigan con-test. He completed 18-of-34 passes for 151 yards against the Wolverines.

HORNETS ON NATIONAL TV

The Cincinnati contest will mark the second straight week that the Hornets have appeared on a national TV/Internet broadcast. Saturday‘s contest will air live on

ESPN3. Jim Barber will call the play-by-play, while John Gregory will provide color commentary. Rontina McCann will report from the sideline. Last week‘s 38-14 loss to Delaware was nationally televised on the NBC Sports Network as part of the network‘s Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) television pack-

age. Delaware State‘s Thursday, Oct. 25 contest at Morgan State University in Baltimore will air live on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) television agree-ment with the network. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27. It will be Delaware State's first ESPNU appear-

ance since 2010, and fourth overall. The Hornets' three previous ESPNU Thursday night contests were home games at Alumni Stadi-um. DSU defeated Bethune-Cookman 24-10 in its first ESPNU Thurs-day night game in 2007. The Hornets won a 35-28 overtime thriller

against Florida A&M on ESPNU in 2008. Delaware State fell to Hampton 20-14 in its last ESPNU appearance in 2010.

WILSON AMONG DSU’S ALL-TIME GREAT RECEIVERS

With his team-high nine catches against Dela-ware, Delaware State‘s Justin Wilson (r-sr.; 6-1, 185) has moved into a tie for third place on the team‘s list for career receptions. He now has 138 catches for 1755 yards (sixth in team histo-ry). Wilson currently leads the MEAC, and is tied for ninth among all FCS players, in receptions at 8.0 per game. He‘s also third in the MEAC (36th FCS) in receiving yards at 77.50 per game. Despite missing three games with an ankle inju-ry last season, Wilson tallied 54 receptions for 563 yards and a team-high six touchdowns. He was tied for second in the MEAC in receptions per-game (6.0) in 2011. Wilson and teammate Travis Tarpley combined for 120 catches and 1,299 yards last season, tops among all MEAC receiving duos. Before suffering his ankle injury in week two last season, Wilson opened the 2011 campaign with six catches for 110 yards (long 47) and two touchdowns (47 and 7 yards) in the Hornets‘ 24-21 win over VMI (Sep. 3). He returned from the injury with a career-high 10 receptions for 118 yards and a touch-down vs. Norfolk State (Oct. 8). He had at least five catches in seven of the eight games in which he ap-peared last season, and six-or-more receptions in six contests. In the three games Wilson missed last season, the Hornets scored just seven points and passed for 316 yards. DSU was shutout in two of those contests, including the loss to Delaware. A 2012 All-MEAC Second Team selection, Wilson was the 2011 Preseason MEAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year. He earned All-MEAC First Team honors following the 2010 season. That year, he became the first player in MEAC history to lead the league in receptions (59), receiving yards (937) and touch-down catches (11) in the same season.

Wilson and Tarpley lead all MEAC duos with 26 receptions this season.

HORNETS IN MEAC

Delaware State, a charter member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), is in its 42nd season of league play. The Hornets have an all-time record of 119-141-1 in MEAC contests. Delaware State has won or shared six MEAC championships. The Hornets claimed outright MEAC titles in 1985, 1989 and 2007, while sharing the crown in 1987, 1988 and 1991. Since winning the MEAC title with an 8-0 record in 2007, Delaware State is 11-26 in league contests, in-cluding a 7-12 mark at home .

CAPTAINS UP FOR GRABS

Rather than select captains for the season, the Dela-ware State coaching staff plans to appoint captains for each game this year. LB Quintin Fortes, OL Nail Mu-radymov, DB Terrick Colston and DB Davon Moore served as captains at Delaware last week ―We will name captains for each contest, based on game and practice performance, attitude, classroom and off-the-field activities,‖ said second-year head coach Kermit Blount. ―This has been my philosophy since I became a head coach.‖

HORNETS LOOKING TO WILLIAMS,

OTHER YOUNGSTERS TO

BOLSTER RUNNING GAME Delaware State has made slight progress in the effort to bolster its running game this season. After rushing for

just 55 yards in last week‘s loss to Delaware, the Hornets currently rank 99th among FCS teams at 69.0 rush-ing yards per game. The Hornets are hoping the emergence of Williams and other young runners will put its 2011 rushing woes in the past. The Hornets were 119th out of 120 Foot-ball Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in rushing at 49.8 yards per

game, 119th in total offense (249.3 ypg) and 117th in scoring (14.5 ppg) last season. The Hornets are looking to Malcolm Williams (so.; jr. 5-10, 175) and a few youngsters to bolster the run game this year. Williams leads the team with 116 yards rushing through two games. He rushed for a team-high 72 yards on 13 car-ries (5.5 ypc), including a long of 32 yards in the opener against VMI. Williams also had a 38-yard kickoff return to jumpstart the Hornets‘ game-winning drive in the fourth quarter vs VMI. Williams, a former Temple Uni-versity signee, emerged as the Hornets‘ No. 1 runner after an impressive 2012 spring camp. Williams saw limited action for the Hornets last season, recording just seven rushing attempts for 18 yards, four kickoffs for 36 yards and a 19-yard punt return. A former football and track standout at Reading Senior High School, Williams was clocked at 4.37 seconds in the 40-yard dash during a Pennsylvania high school challenge. True freshmen Nagee Jackson (fr.; 6-1, 215) and Dae-Hon Cheung (fr.; 5-10, 180), along with second-year back Lamar Shaw (so.; 5-9, 230) have also carried the ball this season. Jackson is second on the Hornets with 25 yards rush-ing. He also scored his first career touchdown on a one-yard run at Delaware last week.

Two mainstays on the defensive line the past three years have been moved to linebacker for the 2012 season. Former defensive ends Olusegun Ayanbiola (sr.; 6-2, 250) and Quintin Fortes (sr.; 6-3, 255) each started at outside linebacker in last week‘s opener against VMI. Fortes had five tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, while Ayanbiola recorded three tackles and recovered a fumble in the opener. Ayanbiola had 28 tackles, including 19 solo stops, primarily at the end position in 2011. He was fourth on the team with 6 tackles-for-loss and tied for third with 1.5 sacks last season. In 2010,

Ayanbiola was the team leader with five sacks and second on the Hornets with 10 tackles for loss. Fortes was eighth on the team with 32 tackles (16 solo) last season. He was also credited with 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in 2011. Inside linebacker Ernest Adjei (sr.; 6-0, 235) is the Hornets‘ top returning tackler. Adjei had six tackles, including 2.5 tackles-for-loss (-4 yards) last week. Last season, he was third on the team with 59 tackles (48 solo), including seven in the opponents‘ backfield. Along the Hornets‘ defensive front this season, Rodney Gunter (so; 6-5, 300) is rising star at right end. As a true freshman in 2011, Gunter was fifth on the team with 39 tackles (24 unassisted). He also recorded 4.5 tackles for loss and one sack last year.

Veteran George Bansah (sr.; 6-1, 270) is the likely starter at nose guard. Bansah had 23 tack-les, including four backfield stops, a pass deflec-tion and fumble recovery last season. In the secondary, former running back Nick Wil-liams (sr.; 5-9, 170) begins the season at corner-back. He was moved to the secondary midway through the 2011 season.

COLSTON, MOORE LEAD HORNETS ―D‖

Defensive back Terrick Colston (so.; 6-1, 185) has made quite an impression in his first season on the active roster. Colston, a native of Lakeland, Fla., is tied for the team lead with 19 tackles through two games. He collected 12 tackles (7 solo) in the Hornets‘ 17-10 win over VMI on Sep. 1. Free safety Davon Moore (jr.; 5-11, 190) is tied with Colston for the team high with 19 tackles. He also collected 12 tackles (5 unassisted) in the VMI contest. ―Colston and Moore have been extremely active for us in the early going,‖ said Delaware State head coach Kermit Blount. ―They have helped prevent a number of big plays with good reads and solid tackling.‖

HOLD THOSE FLAGS

The Hornets are off to a good start in their bid to com-mit the fewest penalties in the MEAC for the third straight year. DSU was penalized just six times for 39 yards in last week‘s opener. Delaware State was the most disciplined team in the MEAC during the 2011 season. The Hornets committed the fewest penalties (67) and assessed the fewest penalty yards among all league teams last season (570). DSU tied a team rec-ord with two penalties for just 10 yards vs. North Caroli-na A&T on Oct. 15, 2011. The Hornets also had two penalties for 10 yards vs. Morgan State in 2010. Dela-ware State was No. 1 in the MEAC for fewest penalties in 2010. The Hornets were flagged a total of 73 times (6.6 pg) for 551 yards, averaging a league-low 50.1 penalty yards per game two seasons ago.

SEASON OPENING SUCCESS

Delaware State‘s win over VMI on Sep. 1 marked its second straight season-opening victory (each vs. VMI) and sixth opening day triumph in the last eight years.

TOUGH SLATE

Saturday‘s trip to Cincinnati is the second of back-to-back brutal contests for the Hornets. DSU is coming off a 38-14 loss to FCS #15 Delaware last week. The Hor-nets are 0-4 all-time vs. UD, including a loss to the Joe Flacco-led Hens in the first-ever meeting between the state‘s lone Division I programs in the 2007 NCAA play-ers. This week‘s contest at Cincinnati will be DSU‘s first meeting against a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) op-ponent since Michigan in 2009.

MATTHEWS HEADS 2012 H-O-F CLASS

Rahsaan Matthews, Delaware State University‘s career passing leader; heads the list of the University‘s 2011 Athletics Hall-of-Fame class. A total of 11 former ath-letes will be inducted during a ceremony on Friday, Oct. 12 at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center in Dover. In addition, Delaware State will honor former football stars Calvin Stephens and Greg Wright. Matthews was the MEAC Football Offensive Player-of-the-Year and a Black College All-America selection in 2000. He ranks second on the MEAC‘s career list for passing yards (8,073) and touchdown passes (74), and is fourth in completions (563).

FORMER HORNET JOINS DSU COACHING STAFF

The Delaware State coaching staff has remained pretty much intact in the second year of the Kermit Blount era. The only change from last season is the addition of safeties coach Carlos Woods, a Delaware State grad and former Hornet lineback-er. Woods competed for three seasons with the Hornets. His best season was in 2000 when he was eighth on the team with 35 tackles to help lead the team to a 7-4 record, its first winning mark in five years. Following his graduation from DSU, Woods served as a graduate assistant under the late Joe Paterno at Penn State University. Woods also served on on the coaching staff of the NFL‘s Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals. The Delaware State University product was in the press box conducting slide presentations for the coaching staff when the Colts de-feated the Chicago Bears 29-17 in Super Bowl XLI on February 4, 2007 in Miami, Fla. He was presented with a championship ring by the team.

Also during the off-season, Blount appointed offensive line coach Nick Calcutta as assistant head coach. Coordinators Arrington Jones (offense) and Mike Ketchum (defense) have re-turned to the staff for their second seasons at DSU. Each worked with Blount during his tenure as head coach at Winston-Salem State. Jones, a former member of the NFL‘s San Francisco 49ers, also served as head coach at Virginia Union University. Ketchum was a head coach at his alma mater, Guilford University. Tory Woodbury (running back) and Bryant Foster (cornerbacks) also return from last season. Woodbury was a star quarterback at Winston-Salem State before playing in the NFL for the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints and Buffalo Bills. Foster was a standout defensive back at his alma mater Garner-Webb before serving as an assistant there. Veteran coaches Curtis Thomas (wide receivers/special teams) and Jeff Braxton (defensive line) also remain on the staff Thomas, a former star receiver for the Hornets, is in his 13th year on the staff. He has served each of the last three DSU head coaches.

Braxton is in his third stint at Delaware State. He returned to the Hornets in 2011 after serving the previous three years as head coach at Cheyney University (Pa.).

DELAWARE STATE HEAD COACH KERMIT BLOUNT

Blount is in his second year at Dela-ware State University. He was intro-duced by DSU President Harry L. Williams as head coach of the Hor-nets on Feb. 4, 2011. Despite a 3-8 record in Blount's first season with the Hornets, the team showed noticeable improvement on the field and in the classroom. DSU closed out the 2011 season with a 39-36 win over Howard, which featured one of the nation's stingiest defenses entering the contest. The Hornets racked up 412 total yards, including 324 by the pass during the game. The

Bison were third among all FCS schools in pass defense (141.3 ypg) and fourth in total defense (288.5 ypg) prior to the contest. Blount's 2011 Delaware State team was also the most disciplined in the MEAC. The Hornets were No. 1 in the league in fewest pen-alties (67) and penalty yards (570) last season. In the classroom, 13 members of the 2011 Hornets earned MEAC Comissioner's All-Academic recognition. The team's combined grade point average also improved by 0.75 percentage points during the season. Blount has more than 28 years of collegiate coaching experi-ence, including 16 as the head football coach for Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. It didn't take long for Blount to earn the respect of the Hornet play-ers and the Delaware State University family. He quickly became an ambassador for the University and the football program throughout the region, in addition to establishing new academic, training, practice and accountability policies for the team. Along the way, he found time to attract a top-notch staff of assistant coaches and support personnel to DSU. Despite just a few weeks to prepare, Blount also directed the Hor-nets to a successful 2011 spring camp, during which time, new offensive and defensive formations were installed. During his tenure at Winston-Salem, Coach Blount had a career record 91-87-3. He guided the Rams to two Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championships and a total of three CIAA Championship game appearances. He also led Winston-Salem to two Pioneer Bowl appearances, one of which the team emerged as the victor (1999). Blount is the winningest coach in the history of the Winston-Salem State football program. In fact, he reached the top of the list with a 28-27 come-from-behind win against Delaware State in Dover, Del., in 2008. He has also led the Rams to 25 percent of their con-ference championships, directing WSSU to two of its eight con-ference titles as a head coach and to two more conference titles as a quarterback on the team's 1977 and 1978 squads. Blount was honored as the CIAA Coach of the Year and as the Washington D.C. Pigskin Coach of the Year, as well as the 100% Wrong Club Coach of the Year - each award in both 1999 and 2000. Throughout his coaching career, Blount has been associated with programs that have experienced phenomenal success.

In all, he has been in a leadership role with teams that have won a total of six conference titles at both the NCAA Division I and Division II levels. Blount began his coaching career in his home state of Virginia at Armstrong Kennedy High School in Richmond as a quarterbacks coach and assistant offensive coordinator. Following two sea-sons at the high school level Blount moved on to the collegiate ranks in 1983. In 1983 he became a graduate assistant and assistant quarter-backs coach at East Carolina University where he would begin his collegiate coaching career. Following his stint with the Pi-rates, Blount joined the staff at Howard University, where he assumed the responsibilities of offensive coordinator from 1984-89 under Bison head coach Willie Jeffries. Soon after his arrival in the nation's capital, Blount's presence was felt as he directed a potent Bison offense to the 1987 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship. Following his time at Howard, he spent four more years as part of Jeffries' staff at South Carolina State University (MEAC) in Orangeburg, South Carolina before returning to his alma mater, Winston-Salem State University, as the head football coach in 1993. During his coaching career, Blount and his coaching staffs have been responsible for recruiting and coaching student-athletes that have earned a total of 106 all-conference selections. In ad-dition, Blount has guided a pair of conference player-of-the-year recipients, one All-America selection and a two-time Academic All-America honoree. His priority on academics resulted in more than 20 percent of Winston-Salem State University football scholarship student-athletes earning above a 3.0 GPA during the 2007-08 academic year and 22 football players have been named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Commissioner's All-Academic team over the span of the last two seasons. During Blount's tenure, the Rams' football team GPA was the highest since the data has been tracked by the WSSU Office of Athletic-Academic Support and Blount and his coaching staff have graduated 79 percent of football student-athletes over the most recent five-year reporting period. Blount helped increase the Winston-Salem players' graduation rate from 42% in 1993 to 80% by 2009. Throughout Blount's career, a number of his players have risen to play professionally in the NFL, CFL and the Arena Football League, including William Hayes, a third round draft pick and starting defensive end for the NFL's Tennessee Titans.

Not only has Blount helped to shape the futures of former student-athletes at WSSU, he has also helped to guide the careers of countless assistant coaches and coordinators. Blount has helped four of his former assistant coaches move on to successful head coaching careers at the collegiate level. A 1980 graduate of Winston-Salem State University, Blount en-joyed a fruitful playing career as a Ram. As a four-year starter at quarterback at WSSU, Blount guided the Rams to back-to-back CIAA titles in 1977 and 1978 earning all-conference and All-America honors along the way. The 1978 All-American sat atop the WSSU record books for more than 25 years before his 3,330 career passing yards were surpassed in 2004. A native of Richmond, Va., Blount has a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education from Winston-Salem State Univer-sity. Kermit and wife Ava have two grown children, April and Bryan.

ALUMNI STADIUM – DOVER, DEL.

SEP. 1, 2012

Nick Elko ran four yards for a touchdown with 45 seconds left to lift Delaware State to a 17-10 season opening win over VMI at Alumni Stadium. The touchdown capped off a nine-play, 55-yard drive that consumed a minute-45 seconds. VMI drove to the Dela-ware State 38-yard line on the game‘s final possession, but Erik Kordenbrock‘s despera-tion pass was intercepted by DSU‘s Ronald Robinson in the endzone as time expired. Delaware State led 10-0 at halftime, but VMI scored a touchdown in the third quarter and added a field goal with 2:35 left in the fourth quarter to tie the game. After VMI tied the game, DSU‘s Malcolm Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 38 yards to the Hornet 45-yard line to jumpstart the game-winning touchdown drive. The Hornets faced a fourth-and-one at the VMI 46 when Williams rushed two yards to sustain the drive. On the next play, Elko completed a five-yard pass to Justin Wilson to the VMI 39. A VMI per-sonal foul on the play gave the Hornets a first down at the Keydets‘ 26. Two plays later, Elko and Travis Tarpley connected on a 14-yard pass to the VMI 12. Delaware State faced a second-and-goal at the four when Elko faked a hand-off then scampered around the right end to the endzone to give put the Hornets ahead 16-10. Mitchell Ward tacked on the extra point to give DSU a seven point lead. Delaware State broke the scoreless tie thanks to a VMI miscue. Four plays after Olusegun Ayanbiola recovered a Keydet fumble at the VMI 16, Mitchell Ward kicked a 30-yard field goal to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead with 6:01 left on the second quarter clock. DSU added to its lead with a touchdown right before the half. Elko and Travis Tarpley connected on a 26-yard scoring pass to give the Hornets a 10-0 lead with 42 second left in the second quarter. Elko completed 6-of-7 passes for 79 yards during the eight-play, 80-yard drive. He connected twice with Wilson for 29 yards and Joe Ceravolo had three catches for 24 yards before the Tarpley touchdown. Ward‘s extra point gave the Hornets a 10-0 lead at the half. VMI began its comeback with a late third quarter touchdown on a fourth down play to cut the Hornets‘ lead to 10-7. David Turner capped off the nine-play, 46-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge on fourth down with 2:24 left in the third quarter. The Keydets ap-peared headed for a go-ahead touchdown after consuming seven-minutes-41 seconds off the clock during a 17-play, 75-yard fourth quarter drive. VMI had a first down at the DSU four, but had to settle for a 22-yard field goal from Jeff Sexton to tie the score at 10-10 with 2:35 left to play. Delaware State was outgained 383 to 239 in the game. VMI had 158 yards rushing and 225 yards by the pass.

GAME 2

DELAWARE 38 DELAWARE STATE 14

DELAWARE STADIUM – NEWARK, DEL.

SEP. 8, 2012

Delaware State outgained host Delaware by 71 yards and won the time of possession battle by nearly 11 minutes, but was undone by key mistakes in a 38-14 loss to the #15 Hens in the First State Rivalry Tubby Raymond Field today. The Hornets were plagued by two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, a blocked field goal attempt and several costly penalties. Delaware State racked up 353 total yards in the contest, its best showing in four meetings against the Hens. The Hornets had 298 yards passing, but were held to 55 yards on the ground. Delaware recorded 282 total yards. The Hens posted 155 yards passing and 127 rushing. Delaware State appeared headed for a score on the opening drive of the game, but was denied due to a special teams mistake. The Hornets drove 63 yards on 12 plays to the UD 12-yard line, but Mitchell Ward‘s 29-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Delaware‘s Marcus Burley. The Hornets had four first downs on the opening drive, two on third down completions from Nick Elko to Justin Wilson (seven yards) and Justin Brewton (nine yards). After Delaware went three-and-out on its first possession, the Hornets em-barked on another long drive into Blue Hen territory. DSU marched 54 yards on 11 plays to the Dela-ware 26 when another miscue resulted in the game‘s first score. Elko‘s third down pass to Wilson was tipped into the hands of Delaware‘s Ricky Tunstall, who avoided several would-be tacklers on a 91-yard return for a touchdown on the interception with 3:39 left in the first quarter. Sean Baner‘s extra point kick gave the Hens a 7-0 lead. The Hornets outgained the Hens 135-to-37 and held a 12:19-to-2:41 time of possession advantage in the opening quarter. Delaware opened up a 14-0 lead on touchdown early in the second quarter. The 9-play, 70-yard drive was capped off by a 14-yard scoring pass from Trent Hurley to Michael Johnson with 12:17 left in the second quarter. After the Hornets failed to record a first down on their next possession, Delaware used a trick play to set up its third touchdown. The Hens lined up in punt formation on fourth-and-six at the DSU 39, but punter Rauley Zaragoza ran nine yards for a first down to the Hornet 30. Four plays later, Hurley scored on a one-yard plunge to give Delaware a three-touchdown lead. Baner‘s extra point kick put the Hens up 21-0 with 7:52 left in the second quarter. DSU took advantage of a rare Delaware mistake to score its first touchdown in more than five quarters against the Hens. Five plays after a roughing the punter call against Delaware kept a DSU drive going, Elko hit Justin Wilson for an 18-yard touch-down to cap off a nine-play, 66-yard scoring march. Ward‘s extra point cut Delaware‘s lead to 21-7 with 3:02 left in the second quarter. A key play in the drive was a 20-yard one-hand first down catch by Brewton to the UD 22. Elko completed each of his five pass attempts for 54 yards during the drive. Delaware scored a touchdown on a 6-yard pass from Hurley to Jerel Harrison just before halftime to take a 28-7 lead at the break. The scoring play capped off an 11-play, 69-yard drive that was aided by two 15-yard personal foul penalties on the Hornets. The Hens scored a field goal on the opening drive of the third quarter to open up a 31-7 lead. Delaware State answered with a 13-play drive for its second touchdown of the game. Freshman running back Nagee Jackson capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge on fourth down for his first career score. Ward‘s extra point kick pulled the Hornets to within 31-14 with 5:04 left in the third quarter.
