Coming off of one of the most successful seasons in school history, the Charleston Southern baseball team will look to build upon last season’s achievements when they open they open the 2012 season against Georgetown on Friday at CSU Ballpark.

A 10-win improvement earned head coach Stuart Lake 2011 Coach of the Year honors and five Buc-caneers all-conference recognition. Three of those honorees will return for the 2012 season, with Jaren Sustar and Charlie McCready tabbed to lead the squad as team captains. Despite being picked to fin-ish sixth in the Big South in 2012, the Buccaneers feel that last year’s success is simply a stepping stone on the way to their ultimate goal of winning a Big South championship.

INFIELDMuch of the infield remains intact from last season, with starters Sustar, Walt Quattlebaum, and Alex To-masovich returning.

Tomasovich comes off of a stellar freshman campaign that saw him finish second in Big South Rookie of the Year voting. The sophomore shortstop hit .351 as a freshman in 2011 to finish third on the team. In early May, he became the first CSU position player to earn BSC Player of the Week honors since 2005, going 10-for-15 to hit .667 in a sweep of High Point and Geor-gia Southern.

Big South All-Conference Second Team honoree Su-star returns at third base after a breakout sophomore campaign in which he finished the season hitting .342. Sustar, who started in all but one of CSU’s 59 games, fell just short of tying the school’s single season record with 81 hits. One of the team’s two captains this season, he is expected to lead the Bucs both on and off the field.

The most veteran member of the infield, Quattlebaum returns for his senior season and could see action at any number of positions. The Big South All-Second Team honoree saw the majority of his time at short-stop and second base last season but is expected to make the move to first base in 2012 to fill the void left by Nick Chinners. Quattlebaum boasts the best bat-ting average of CSU’s returning players, hitting .355 and drove in 33 runs as a redshirt junior in 2011.

With Quattlebaum’s move to first, sophomore Cody Austin and newcomer John Faircloth could both see action at second base. Austin started 13 games a freshman before an injury took him out of the lineup. Faircloth joins the Bucs after a season at Brunswick Community College.

Harrison Wilkins, who played in 20 games as a fresh-man in 2010, and newcomer Thomas Levander will provide depth at first and shortstop, respectively, while Ben Qualkinbush also saw action at first base last season.

CATCHER Both of CSU’s starting catchers, Drew Woodall and Blake Hunt, return after splitting time last season. Along with sophomore Denis Buckley, who saw ac-tion in 16 games last season, junior college transfer Derek Moses is also expected to join the mix giving the Bucs a wealth of experience behind the plate.

OUTFIELDDespite the loss of last season’s starters to gradu-ation, the Buccaneers remain confident in their outfield as new talent steps in. Leading the way is sophomore Brian Welch, who played in 25 games as a freshman in 2011. He will be joined by freshmen Bobby Ison and Evan Still, both all-state honorees as high school players.

Sophomore Zach Hagaman will see time in both the outfield and on the mound after playing in 14 games his freshman season. The Pawley’s Island-native ended last season with one of the team’s best on-base percentages and started his career off with a bang, blasting a two-run homer on his first career hit. Junior Shane Miles, who saw action in 19 games as a sophomore; Martin Connelly and Nick Berry will also be in the mix.

HITTING One of the Big South’s strongest hitting teams, eight of CSU’s nine starters hit .300 or higher for a good portion of the season. Three of the top four bat-ters from the 2011 season return with Quattlebaum leading the way at .355. Sustar led the Bucs with 81 hits in 2011 and finished second on the team in RBI with 47. Tomasovich (.351) was also a team leader late in the season with 12 doubles. Robbie Streett is expected to take over at DH and contribute early on.

PITCHING A staff that as produced professional prospects the last two seasons will combine experienced veterans and talented newcomers. Former Friday starter Stew Brase, who signed with the Chicago White Sox after the 2011 season, will be replaced by former relief pitcher Charlie McCready. The senior south-paw’s 2.29 ERA led the team last season as did his 27 appearances. McCready went 10 games without giving up a hit and led the NCAA with an ERA of 0.24 in March.

Junior college transfer and former Goose Creek standout Ryan Gunther will take over as a starter as well, while Patrick Dolan completes the weekend rotation. A Saturday starter last season, Dolan fin-ished with a 3-3 record in leads all returning pitchers with 56 strikeouts. Senior Brennan Dorsett went 1-0 after missing time with an injury last season and will join the midweek rotation along with newcomers Kevin Buran, Austin Weekley and Chase Shelton.

RHP Corey Deighan fell a save shy of the school’s single season record with seven last season but is expected to get another shot at the mark in 2012. Deighan made 26 appearances in 2011, finishing the season with 38 strikeouts and a 6.25 ERA. Haga-man will split time between the mound and the out-field after making six appearances last season.

Veterans Kyle Ward (1-0, 7.46 ERA),Matt Witt (10 appearances), George Schaefer (seven appearanc-es) and Levi Mauldin (10 appearances) bring ex-perience to the bullpen while Brennan Allen, Daniel Vargas and Chanler Cox complete the pitching staff.

Stuart Lake begins his fourth season at the helm of his alma mater and continues to build a program that should contend for the Big South Conference title for years to come.

Lake was named the 2011 Big South Conference Coach of the Year after guiding the Buccaneers to a 15-12 confer-ence mark and a 29 wins overall, an improvement of 12 victories.

Lake saw the graduation of 11 experienced seniors, includ-ing the school’s all-time hit leader, first baseman Nick Chin-ners. Junior pitcher Ali Williams was drafted by the Kansas City Royals and signed his professional contract while pitcher Stew Brase and outfielder Brantley Meier earned opportunities to play professionally as well.

While building a competitive team on the field, Lake also has helped lead the way to major improvements in the program’s facilities. The coach has energized a group of former players and together the effort has led to increased seating capacity at Buccaneer field, improvements in dug-outs and backstops, and a covered batting cage facility.

In the near future, Lake and the Buccaneers hope to play the first-ever night baseball game on campus as a major fundraising effort to light Buccaneer field is well underway.

In 2010 Lake piloted the Bucs to a 17-38 record with impressive wins over #25 The Citadel and Virginia Com-monwealth, as well as Big South foes #28 VMI and Pres-byterian. CSU also had strong showings against some of the nation’s top teams, including #8 Coastal Carolina, #6 Florida and the eventual national champions #7 South Carolina.

Pitcher Tyler Thornburg capped off a stellar season by being named to the All-Conference Second Team. He was then selected in third round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. Team-mate Nick Chinners, who returns for his senior season in 2011, was also named to the All-Conference Second Team after finishing 2010 ranked second in the Big South in bat-ting average (.485).

In Lake’s first season as the CSU skipper, the Buccaneers went 16-37 and posted a 10-16 mark in Big South Confer-ence play. Highlights of the season included season-series victories over BSC foes UNC Asheville, VMI and Radford. Pitchers Jesse Cadenhead and Brandon Roberts earned BSC Pitcher of the Week honors, while senior Mark Perry was a member of the BSC All-Academic team.

In Lake’s 15-year coaching career, he has coached more than 75 players who have gone on to play professional baseball with 31 of those being drafted in the first 10 rounds. Seven of those 13 were drafted in the first round. Three of his players have been named SEC Player of the Year and one named Southern Conference Player of the Year. Two of his players have been named to the Golden

Spikes Award Watch List with one winning that coveted award. Lake has had 10 former athletes reach the Major League and Lake is one of the few who can ever claim to coach a player that eventually appeared in the Major League All-Star Game, World Series and the Super Bowl. In 2008, Lake became the third CSU/Baptist College grad-uate to coach the Buccaneers, following in the footsteps of Ralph Ciabattari and Jamie Futrell. Prior to his arrival at CSU, Lake spent two years across town as an assistant for The Citadel Baseball program, where he was respon-sible for coaching the hitters and outfielders, and was very involved in recruiting prospective student-athletes. Lake also spent three seasons as an assistant for the Ole Miss Rebels, where he was responsible for the hitters and outfielders. Ole Miss enjoyed three of the school’s most successful seasons in history with 39 wins in 2004, 47 in 2005 and 44 in 2006. The Rebels hosted an NCAA Region-al in all three of Lake’s years, as well as two NCAA Super Regionals. The 2005 edition of the Ole Miss ball club won the Southeastern Conference Western Division and the 2006 team won the SEC Tournament Championship.

In Lake’s first year at Ole Miss, the Rebels offense belted 14 more home runs than in the previous year and the team’s .444 slugging percentage was 33 points higher than the year before. In addition, the Rebels topped the 600-hit mark with 614 base hits.

In the 2005 season, the Rebels continued to improve of-fensively, producing more than 750 hits, scoring more than 500 runs and driving in 462 runs on the way to claiming the SEC Western Division title, the program’s first in 23 sea-sons. The Rebels also had six hitters hit over the .300 mark that year.

The 2006 season witnessed Ole Miss lead the extremely tough SEC in hitting as the Rebels batted at the .309 clip for the year and four Rebels finished in the top eight in the SEC in total hits for the season. The Ole Miss offense pro-duced more than 700 hits for the second straight season as the Rebels won the SEC Tournament on its way to a second straight NCAA Super Regional.

Prior to his stint at Ole Miss, Lake spent one season at the College of Charleston. In his only year with the Cougars, Lake served as third base coach, hitting instructor and outfield coach.

Lake began his collegiate coaching career at South Caro-lina in 1999, where he coached the outfielders, coached first base and assisted with the hitters. During his time at USC, the Gamecocks won three SEC East Division titles, two SEC Championships, played in three NCAA Super Regionals and reached the College World Series Champi-onship Game in 2002. Lake helped two SEC Player of the Year winners during his stint as a Gamecock. One of those players, Kip Bouknight, was also the 2002 Golden Spikes Award Winner.

Prior to his collegiate coaching career, Lake coached at Mid Carolina High School (his alma mater) and at Brook-land Cayce High School in Columbia. Brookland Cayce won the AAA State Championship in Lake’s second year in 1998. Lake also served as the head coach of the Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League in 2000.

Lake is married to the former Tracie Smith of Clover, S.C. The couple has one son, Hayden.

Sid Fallaw enters his third season with the Buccaneers, and will take over the program’s recruiting efforts in 2012. He will continue to serve as the team’s hitting and catch-ing coach. Fallaw joined the Buccaneers in 2009 after a four-year playing career at cross-town rival The Cita-del. Under his guidance, CSU’s team batting average has shown marked improvements as the Bucs finished the 2011 season with the Big South’s third best batting average at .298. BSC All-Conference First Team member Matt Still finished the season ranked fifth in the league in batting average (.358) while Walt Quattlebuam ranked eight with a batting average of .355, earning both BSC All-Conference Second Team and BSC Tournament Team honors. Nick Chinners also set a new CSU career hits record under Fal-law’s tutelage.

A four-year starter at The Citadel, Fallaw played both catcher and pitcher, and was also used as the designated hitter. He spent two seasons playing for current CSU head coach Stuart Lake, who was an assistant for the Bulldogs.

Fallaw received numerous accolades during his playing ca-reer, including earning letters all four years at The Citadel.

He went to high school at W. Wyman King Academy in Batesburg, S.C., and was named All-Region Player of the Year in 2003, ’04 and ’05. He was a captain and was named High School Sports Report Player of the Year his last three years. He was named State Newspaper SCISA Player of the Year sophomore and junior years, and was an All-Region selection as a freshman.

Coaching experience includes being a baseball camp direc-tor at W. Wyman King Academy. He was also The Citadel camp/tournament director. He played AAU traveling base-ball for five years.

Fallaw graduated from The Citadel in 2009, and was on the Athletic Honor Roll his last three years.

Adam Ward joins the CSU family from Big South foe Liberty, where he has spent the past two seasons working as an assistant for the Flames. Ward also coordinated the Jim Toman Baseball Camps and field maintenance while in Lynchburg. In his first season, Ward helped guide Liberty to a school-record 42 victories and the runner-up position in the Big South Championship. Under his guidance, Flames player Curran Redal earned 2010 Big South All-Conference honors. Ward previously spent four years working with the North Charleston Dixie Youth Majors, piloting the team to state championships in 2007 and 2008 and World Series Championships in 2006 and 2009.

A former Hanahan High School standout, Ward played for Clemson University from 2007-09. He hit .375 for the Ti-gers in 2008 and was a two-time member of the ACC Aca-demic Honor Roll. Ward graduated from Clemson in 2008 with a bachelor’s of science in economics and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in economics from Clemson

Jamie Rabon enters his second season on Coach Stuart Lake’s staff and serves as the coach of the infield for the Buccaneers.

Rabon came to CSU from Wofford, where he coached the infield-ers and assisted with all areas of baseball operations. Under his guidance, third baseman Kyle Behrendt earned Southern Confer-ence Sports Media Association Second Team honors as well as All-Southern Conference Second Team accolades.

Prior to his time with the Terriers, Rabon was a teacher and coach at Northwood Academy in North Charleston. He served as the head coach of the junior varsity team and assistant coach of the varsity team. In 2008 and 2009, the varsity team finished as runner-up in the SCISA state championship.

Rabon has also been an assistant coach with the North Charles-ton Dixie Major Baseball organization since 2003. He worked primarily with the infielders and outfielders as the team won Dixie Major World Series Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2009.

He played baseball for two seasons at USC Salkehatchie before moving on to Southern Wesleyan University where he also played baseball. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management in 2007.

Rabon is a native of North Charleston.

2010: A two-way contributor for the Buccaneers, playing in 41 games as a position player, with 35 starts while pitching 16 times with two starting assignments… Batted .236 with four home runs and 14 RBI, while going 0-3 on the mound with a 9.85 ERA… Tallied his best day of the season on March 13 against Florida, when he was 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and a career-best three runs scored… Had 10 multi-hit games… Stole a base on March 5 against Holy Cross… Homered in both Savannah State games… All four of his home runs came in a nine-day span, with the last coming on March 23 against Savannah State… Recorded two doubles on the season... Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athlet-ics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The league’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by ath-letic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while inten-tionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the league’s first Commissioner and contin-ued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the addi-tions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in fall 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national post-season events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as commissioner, and in 1990, the league received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leader-ship, the conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the league’s third commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been in-strumental in aggressively promoting the conference to new levels. The conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years. He has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in con-ference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the league as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South de-veloped and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the league’s vision as a distinctive athletic conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the ef-forts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified conference mem-bership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter

member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vi-sion has also included technological advancements, as the conference introduced its first live event video stream-ing in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in near-ly every sport. During this time, the conference has had two individual NCAA National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soc-cer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received na-tional Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only con-ference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Win-throp) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Region-als (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth year of the Big South’s football existence. The conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics”, was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the conference’s 25th anniversary. The league also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in league history from 1983-08, with Liberty Uni-versity’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-07 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the league has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

HANK SMALL, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSHenry “Hank” Small is in his 11th full year as CSU’s athletic director. Small took over the position of head of CSU athletics following the

tenure of interim athletic director Rick Brewer, who served as both athletics director and the dean of students. Small came to CSU in summer 2001 following a four-year stint as assistant football coach at Wake Forest University. Small has more

than 30 years of experience in NCAA Division I athletics, including stints at Rutgers, Florida State, Lehigh, Princeton, and Brown. Small also spent one year in the personnel office of the New England Patriots.

As the offensive coordinator at Wake Forest, Small guided the Demon Deacons offense to record-setting heights as a number of school records fell during his tenure.

In his most recent head coaching experience, Small was able to guide Lehigh to a 47-40-1 record and led them to become one of the most productive offenses in the nation.

Small is a 1969 graduate of Gettysburg College and has a master of science degree from Rutgers University. Small and his wife, Pa-mela, currently reside in Goose Creek. Daughter Lacy and middle son Jonathan both graduated from CSU.

DR. RICK BREWER, VICE PRESIDENTFOR STUDENT AFFAIRS AND ATHLETICS

Dr. Rick Brewer is a seasoned Christian leader with the vision and leadership skills essential for serving effectively in the 21st century Christian higher education community. Throughout Brewer’s 24-year tenure at CSU, he has played a vital role in shaping the university’s vision for a Christian campus environment and spearheading and executing countless initiatives that underscore what Christian universities are about. He has consistently and enthusiastically taken on positions of increasing responsibility and has brought to each his unique blend of commitment, administrative skills, and Christ-centered focus. Brewer is highly respected as an effective higher education administrator who has the ability to effect change while maintaining support and trust. Indeed, Brewer is a student-centered strategic thinker and transformational change-agent.

Brewer holds BS and MBA degrees from CSU and a PhD in higher educational leadership from the University of South Carolina. In his role as vice president for student affairs and athletics, Brewer provides leadership for CSU’s student life, Chris-tian ministries, denominational relations and athletics.

His family has a solid commitment to Christian higher education - Dr. Brewer’s wife, Cathy, and two sons Jason and Jona-than, are also alums of CSU. The Brewers are members of Summerville Baptist Church in Summerville, S.C., where he previ-ously served as a deacon.

DR. JAIRY C. HUNTER, JR., PRESIDENT Named president of Charleston Southern University in 1984, Dr. Jairy C. Hunter, Jr. is also a professor of management and education. His teaching and professional interests include educational leadership, institutional as-sessment, higher education finance, organizational change, and student personnel services.

Dr. Hunter is a frequent keynote speaker and seminar leader on topics related to higher education, and he continues to teach in the MBA program in CSU’s School of Business.

This fall marks Dr. Hunter’s 27th year as president of the university, and the 46th anniversary of CSU’s founding. During his tenure at CSU, enrollment has increased from 1,600 students to more than 3,000. Academic programs have expanded to include graduate degrees in education, business administration, criminal justice and nursing. The university now offers 38 undergraduate and four graduate programs. Church ministry-related degrees have also grown to include youth ministry and church music. A sports medicine/athletic training program has also been added under Hunter’s administration, providing students with academic and clinical preparation for certification by the National Ath-letic Trainers Association. Beginning in 2007-08, the Hunter Cup is given annually to the top athlete who also stands out academically and spiritually.

CSU has been named to Ameri-ca’s 100 Best College Buys, Military Friendly Schools, America’s Best Christian Colleges, VA Yellow Rib-bon Program and The President’s Higher Education Community Ser-vice Honor Roll. The University awards bachelor’s and master’s degrees and is accredit-ed by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and offers more than 35 undergraduate majors and four gradu-ate programs in business, criminal justice, education and nursing. Each degree program is combined with a comprehensive liberal arts founda-tion, which is designed to develop problem-solving and communication skills. Situated on 300 acres, formerly the site of a rice and indigo planta-tion, Charleston Southern University is in the center of the Charleston met-ropolitan area. Beyond the classroom, students participate in a variety of campus activities includ-

ing academic clubs, service organizations, intramural athletics and campus ministries. The University offers intercollegiate athlet-ics for both men and women, competing in the NCAA Division I Big South Conference. Charleston Southern fields teams in basket-ball, baseball, softball, women’s soccer, cross country, track and field, golf, tennis and vol-leyball, as well as an NCAA Division I Foot-ball Championship Subdivision team. Our athletic programs have produced several nationally recognized professional sports figures, including Charlie Simpkins, 1992 Olympic silver medalist; Maurice Price and Josh Breeden, who signed as free agents in the NFL; Bryant Burch, who signed with the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders; Crystal Car-penter, who signed with the WNBA’s Utah Starzz; R.J. Swindle, who played for the Charleston Riverdogs as a member of the Yankees organization and became the first CSU player to ever pitch in a MLB game, joining the Phillies; Tyler Thornburg, who was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers in the third round of the 2010 MLB draft; and Bob-by Parnell, who made it to the Majors with the N.Y. Mets. Charleston Southern Univer-sity is proud to have sent 11 different teams to NCAA competition over the past nine years. The women’s golf team is the most recent to represent the University in NCAA postseason play, winning the conference championship in 2010, while men’s ten-nis is historically the most consistent, hav-ing competed in four NCAA tournaments since 1999. In it’s history, CSU has cap-tured 28 Big South Conference champion-ships.
