Aquinas College had its origins in the Novitiate Normal School begun by the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids in 1886 in Traverse City. The Novitiate Normal School was transferred to Grand Rapids in 1911, and in 1922 it evolved into Sacred Heart (later Marywood) College.

In 1931, the College was renamed Catholic Junior College. In 1940 the two-year program at CJC was expanded into a four-year bachelor's degree program and the name of the College was changed to Aquinas College.

Aquinas College was originally located in downtown Grand Rapids. In 1945, the college bought the former Lowe Estate on East Fulton Street where it has remained until this day.

In August 2011, Aquinas College will kick off a year's worth of festivities celebrating its 125 years of Catholic Dominican post-secondary education in Michigan.

The celebration of the College's quasquicentennial (125th anniversary) will be highlighted by four signature events that will shine a spotlight on the values that have guided the College throughout its history: prayer, study, service, and community.

Numerical Roster

The Aquinas College Baseball team enters the 2012 season hopeful that last year’s success and disappointment will motivate this year’s ball club to work harder to achieve its goal of winning a Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference championship. Twenty-five players from last year’s roster return, joining fourteen new players. The coaching staff is excited and optimistic about the new players contributing, but the team returns seven of nine starting position players from a year ago. This includes three juniors who earned All-Conference honors. The infield will be a strength of this year’s team, as all starters return. The outfield has two new starters, but overall this group will provide solid defense and strong offense. The catching corps is deep and experienced. The pitching staff is very young, but talented. If they can pitch beyond their experience, the Saint’s will be very competitive, and an interesting team to watch. INFIELD The infield is experienced and one of the team’s strengths as a unit. Two seniors stabilize the infield. Four year starter Ryan Grigonis looks to improve upon his junior year’s performance, but that won’t be easy. Grigonis was healthy and steady last year, hitting .336 overall, with an impressive .380 batting average in WHAC play, and a team high .520 slugging percentage. Ryan is also a very good defensive player with wide range and a strong throwing arm. He should contend for all conference honors as the top shortstop. The other senior infielder is first baseman Michael Wood. Wood led the Saints in homeruns last year, and finished second on the team in RBI’s. He’s the teams most dangerous hitter, and fits the cleanup position in the batting order perfectly.

The starting third baseman is junior, All Conference player, Austin King. King had an outstanding sophomore year. Offensively, Austin puts the ball in play. Last year in 120 at bats, King had a total of twelve walks, strikeouts, and hit by pitches. He hit .383 and was third on the team with a .397 on base percentage. Defensively, King ranks among the best in the program’s history. Taylor Pawlanta returns at second base after having an excellent freshman year. Pawlanta started thirty-two of forty-one games and refused to relinquish his starting role with his consistent play, timely hitting, and fine defense. Other infielders that will add depth and provide strong competition are Steve Crawford, Jimmy McDonagh, and Greg Baranyai. Crawford is a junior looking to contribute with his strong right handed bat. played third base, and could play second. Freshman, Eric Eiseler, an All- State player from Grand Ledge, will play shortstop and second base.

As one of the team’s hardest workers, Steve looks to settle in this year and be the primary designated hitter or the go to guy in the infield. McDonagh will battle for playing time at second and third base. Jimmy started seven games last year and will establish his role throughout the season, as playing time permits. Greg Baranyai is an imposing figure in the batter’s box, and will play first base again this year. Greg will see limited action at first base because of senior Mike Wood, but will be a designated hitter also. The Saints have a bright future at first base in Baranyai. Infielders with the program but red shirting their freshman years are: Colin Brand, Tanner Lung, and Brad Slis. Each of these players will impact the Saints in future years. They continue to work hard and develop with the program. Don’t be surprised if you see these players in the infield: Brent Steele could play all positions, but will likely back up at first base and shortstop. Nick Kissane has

played third base, and could play second. Freshman, Eric Eiseler, an All- State player from Grand Ledge, will play shortstop and second base. OUTFIELD A couple of returnees, a few talented freshman, and a transfer give the Saints a new look in the outfield this year, but with All-Conference center fielder Michael Penny returning, the outfield will be very good for the Saints this year. This group is very athletic. They’ll play solid defense, as each of them can run and throw, and offensively they’ll contribute in a number of ways. Michael Penny led the Saint’s offense last year with a team leading .400 batting average. His terrific foot speed allows him to get on base (leading last year’s team with a .492 on base percentage), and steal bases 23-25. His speed allows him to cover a lot of territory in the outfield, providing the Saints with a defender who can track down fly balls. Speed is a constant, but health is the issue with Penny’s all out style of play. Junior, Brent Steele, moves into a starting role in right field this year. Steele is the Saint’s most versatile player. He is talented enough to play every position on the field because of his athleticism. He’s earned the right field position because of his dedication to becoming a better player. Starting in left field this year will be junior transfer, Alan Manyen. Manyen impressed the coaching staff in the fall with his instincts for the game, and his ability to hit and drive in runs. Allen was second on the team in runs batted in at Muskegon Com-munity College last year. He also pitched, and could impact the Saint’s from the mound as well.

Senior Brent Butgereit returns to provide the team with a very strong left handed bat in the outfield. Brent will see limited action in left, but was an Honorable Mention All-League Designated Hitter last season. The most impressive young outfielder for the Saints is freshman Elliot Drain from Lowell High School. Drain could impact the squad sooner than later. Good size, strength, and speed are reasons to keep an eye on this talented player. Brendan Penny is another exceptional freshman that will see action in the outfield. He has some of the same baseball qualities as his older brother Michael, including being a lefty thrower and hitter. Brendan’s biggest impact to the team could come from the mound this year as a reliever. Other players that could see playing time in the outfield, especially in non-league games or junior varsity contests are: Taylor Pawlanta, who contributed significantly last year, Josh Drake, Jake Roe, and Kyle Kranz.

CATCHING As a unit, the catching will be solid and deep, as the Saint’s return all of last year’s catching corps, and boast four veteran receivers. The most experienced catcher is senior Jake Roe. Jake saw his playing time diminish last year with the emergence of two underclassmen, Scott Witkop and KJ Hartger. With the addition of transfer Nick Kissane, the Saint’s appear to have great competition and versatility this year behind the plate. Roe is the most experienced and knowl-edgeable in handling the pitching staff. He looks to rebound from an off year with the bat, and will contribute on the base paths

and in the outfield because of his better than average foot speed. Junior Scott Witkop earned top catching honors last season for his work ethic and business type demeanor. Scott is a consistent and determined player who seems to always get the job done. He’ll be pushed for playing time by sophomore KJ Hartger. Hartger gained valuable experience last year in non-league games. KJ possesses the strongest throwing arm of the catchers, and looks to improve his hit-ting to compete for increased playing time. The most noteable addition to the catching corps is junior transfer, Nick Kissane from Lansing Community College. Kissane was an All-Conference and All-Regional player last year. He’s pitched and played infield, but will catch for the Saints, as Nick’s bat is too potent to keep out of the lineup. Cory Bunge is a freshman catcher from Maple Valley High School joining the program this year. Cory is a strong left handed hitter who will utilize a red shirt year to improve and look to the future.

PITCHING

This year’s pitching staff is a talented group, but without much experience, as the Saints will rely mostly on sophomore and freshman arms. The underclassmen will need to step up due to the loss of three senior’s, two of them to season ending surgeries. The two senior’s impacting this year’s staff will work out of the bullpen. Chad Bowhuis, an imposing presence with his size and velocity from the left side, could give the Saint’s a big lift with consistency. Chris Allred is in a similar position as Bowhuis in that each are striving to earn valuable innings and impact the team in their final season. Allred is a right hander who possesses a wicked changeup. The team is led by All-Conference Junior Vince Misiewicz. Misiewicz has high expectations of himself, and his team’s performance. He had an excellent season last year posting a 6-2 record with a 2.33 earned run average. Vince was dominant in the league, with his only loss against Madonna. His WHAC earned run average

was 1.52 in forty-one innings pitched with only two walks and thirty-three strikeouts. Josh Drake is a junior pitcher with the next most experience as a starter. He has posted a 6-2 career record with a 5.72 earned run average over his previous two seasons, and has shown signs of dominance. Josh competes from the mound and looks to use his determination to help the team in conference play this year. The sophomore pitchers experienced the trials and tribulations of freshman seasons that should pay dividends for them in their second year. Three sophomores will move into starting spots this year, they are: Kaleb Ort, Kevin Schafer, and Jake Ritsema. Kaleb Ort is eager to step in at the top of the Saint’s rotation. He is the hardest thrower on the staff, and when he has command of his off speed pitches, he’s very good. His successful freshman campaign (2-1 in four starts, striking out 32 in 30 innings pitched) has earned him the opportunity to be a league starter. Kevin Schafer will be a league starter as well. Schafer, a left handed pitcher, had an impressive rookie year (2-1, 3.38 ERA, 2 saves, 21 innings pitched), excellent fall, and looks to continue his progress this spring.

Jake Ritsema had the most appearances (14) of all Aquinas pitchers last year, but only one as a starter. He experienced a full array of situations, opportunities, and emotions last year, and the coaching staff expects that to benefit Jake and the team in his starting role this year. Other sophomores that will compete for valuable innings are Ricky Lowe and Kyle Kranz. Lowe was 2-0 last year and was a consistent pitcher out of the bullpen. He’ll fill the same role this year. Kyle Kranz has settled into the role of a pitcher on this year’s squad. After experimenting at several positions last year, Kyle will contribute from the bullpen, adding depth where the Saints need help the most. Kyle will continue to swing the bat and could be used as a designated hitter or pinch hitter. The Saints staff features several freshmen that will impact this year’s team. Two freshman lefties from Grand Rapids Catholic Central will give the Saint’s a big lift. Matt Krzykwa will mainly be a starting pitcher, and Brendan Penny will be used out of the bullpen. Neither lefty is overpower-ing, but with a variety of pitches they can throw for strikes, and their competitive spirit, look for these two to make a big splash this year. Another freshman lefty is Bryan Mitzner. The 6’6” pitcher spent a brief stint with the team in the fall before joining the basketball team. He has been throwing with the team a couple days a week, and is expected to join the team on a fulltime basis after spring break. Redshirt freshman, right handed pitcher, Christian Potter will see innings as a starter in non-league games this year. Potter is fully recovered from knee surgery his first year in the program. Jason Turner, fresh-man from Dowagiac, will be used as a reliever and spot starter. He’ll provide depth for a young and inexperienced bullpen. Eric Eiseler will be used out of the

bullpen. Eiseler was an extremely successful stopper for Grand Ledge High School last year, and looks to carry that success into the college Ranks. Eiseler will also play second base and shortstop in a backup role when not contributing from the mound. The pitching staff suffered season ending and possibly career ending injuries that required surgery for seniors Tyler Cole and Brian Loper. Sophomore left hander Aaron Thimm is expected to red shirt. SCHEDULE The Saints open their season in Florida during their annual spring break trip in March. The Saints play thirteen games in six days highlighted by games with top ranked NAIA opponents Embry Riddle University and Cumberland University. The squad then returns north for 42 sched-uled games against always tough WHAC opponents, and other Midwest opponents from the Chicagoland Conference (Purdue North Central and Calumet College of St. Josephs), MIAA (Alma, Calvin, Hope, and Olivet), and MCC opponent Bethel College. The younger squad members will also be participating in twelve junior varsity games as well. The top five conference teams will qualify for this year’s conference tournament, hosted by Siena Heights.

Doug Greenslate begins his 11th year as the head coach of the Saints with an overall record of 288-219-3. Aquinas finished 24-16-1 overall in Greenslate's 10th campaign finishing 4th in the WHAC conference. Doug guided the Saints to their first NAIA regional and Heartland Super Regional championships in 2005 earning the College's first

appearance in the NAIA World Series. Greenslate prepped at Anchor Bay High School in New Baltimore, Michigan, earning first team All-State honors in baseball. He played one year each at Mott Community College and Macomb Community College before transferring to Aquinas College in the fall of 1980. He has been a Saint ever since. Greenslate had a stellar pitching career both in college and in the semi-pro ranks. He was a member of the 1982 NAIA State championship team and a two time NBC national champion team member of the Grand Rapids Sullivans. Greenslate gained experience as a head coach managing several summer teams to City League titles. His summer teams advanced annually to the AABC Stan Musial Tournament in Battle Creek. He also assisted legendary NAIA Hall of Fame coach Terry Bocian for 16 prosperous years at Aquinas before taking over the helm eleven years ago. Doug holds both bachelors and masters degrees from Aquinas College. He and his wife, Ann, are proud parents of two sons, John and Joe. Doug is also the Director of Physical Services with the Physical Plant department of the College.

Baseball Coach Emeritus Terry Bocian

Coach Bocian was the head baseball coach at Aquinas College for 30 years. During his time he led the Saints to 1079 wins and became the first collegiate coach in Michigan history to record 1000 victories. During his tenure Aquinas had 30

consecutive winning seasons, made 30 consecutive post-season appearances, and had 27 consecutive seasons with 30 or more wins. Aquinas won 7 NAIA State Championships and finished as runner-ups on 10 other occasions. The Saints also won the WHAC championship 6 times in 9 years. During his tenure 34 players were awarded All- American honors and another 17 players were given Academic All- American honors. Coach Bo was named Michigan NAIA coach of the year 10 times and Region coach of the year 4 times. He has also served as Aquinas Athletic Director since 1978, expanding the athletic program from 8 sports to its current level of 20 sports. He was named NAIA region AD of the year on 3 occasions and has served as region chairman for 8 years.

Coach Bo was inducted in the Grand Rapids Catholic Central Hall of Fame in 1989, the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. He was also given the GR March of Dimes Warren Reynolds Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. He also was named Grand Rapids Catholic Central Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 2002.

Assistant Coach Mark Rasmussen

Mark brings 16 years of coaching varsity baseball to the Aquinas program. He spent one year as an assistant coach at Ottawa Hills, and six years as the head varsity coach. During his time at Ottawa Hills, the Indians won three league titles, two district championships and one regional championship. He has spent the last nine years coaching at Grand Rapids Catholic Central where he compiled a record of 220-75. The cougars won six league titles and three district titles. In 2003, the cougars were runner-up in the state championship, finishing with a record of 35-5. During his tenure, his teams had 8 straight 20-win seasons. Rasmussen is a 1981 Greenville High School graduate earning his Bachelors degree from Central Michigan in 1986. He continued his education at Grand Valley State University where he achieved his Masters.

DREW HUARD Assistant Coach -- Drew begins his first year assisting the program after a four year career with the Saints. An outstanding prep infielder at Grand Ledge High School. Drew was a versatile performer at Aquinas. A four year starter and letter winner, Drew battled through numerous injuries during his college career. He served as the captain of the 2010 squad and capped his career by earning NAIA All American honors. Drew, a 2010 graduate, is completing his education hours this year and working towards his Michigan teaching certificate.

Aquinas initiated the Dennis Molnar Award after the star first-baseman was killed in a car accident in Grand Rapids in November 1973. Molnar, a native of Toledo, Ohio, and graduate of Cardinal Stritch High School, player both baseball and basketball during his two years at Aquinas and was an outstanding hitter. Dennis led the team in home runs in 1973; some of his hitting records still stand. Molnar was also a fine student, a hardworking individual, and one of the most popular students on the Aquinas campus. The Molnar Award is awarded annually to the team's most valuable players after a vote by the team.

DAVE GUMPERT had a stellar four year career at Aquinas College and inked a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers following gradua-

on. He then had a meteoric rise to the Tiger farm system; he ended his first year at Triple A Evansville and was in the big leagues in just his second year of pro ball. He then spent part of six seasons in the big leagues with Detroit, the Chicago Cubs and the Kansas City Roy-als. The South Haven na ve was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1987.

TERRY BOCIAN coached the Saints baseball teams for 30 years during which his teams won over 1,000 games with a winning percentage of 71%. They posted 30 consecu ve winning seasons and 27 consecu ve seasons of 30 or more wins. A 1983 graduate and NAIA All-American at Aquinas College, Paul Assenmacher pitched in the Major League for 15 years. He had stops with Atlanta, NY Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians. He appeared in two World Series and six playoffs. All but one of these (Chicago Cubs) was as a member of the Indians. He ap-peared in more games than any other major league pitcher in the 1990’s. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1989.
