2013 AUM BASEBALL SCHEDULE

SCHEDULE NOTES

For the fi h consecu ve season, the Warhawks will open their regular sea-son at the friendly confi nes of the AUM Baseball Complex. The last me AUM traveled for its season opener was at Mar n Methodist in 2008.

For the fi rst me since the 2010 season, AUM will open Southern States Ath-le c Conference play against a team other than local rival Faulkner University. The Warhawks and the Eagles will meet in each teams’ fi nal regular-season SSAC series on April 25-26, just four days prior to the start of the SSAC Tourna-ment in Columbus, Ga.

AUM will play a home-and-home contest against a pair of NCAA Division II teams in 2013, as it will challenge the University of North Alabama of the Gulf South Conference and Georgia Southwestern State University of the Peach Belt.

The Warhawks will take on four teams ranked in the NAIA Coaches' Pre-season Top 25 Poll in 2013. AUM will open the season by hos ng No. 12 Lindsey Wilson on Feb. 2, before hos ng the defending na onal champions Tennes-see Wesleyan the following day. AUM also has No. 3 Lee University and No. 9 Faulkner University on the schedule.

AUM will play three opponents for the fi rst me in 2013. On Feb. 9, the War-hawks will host the University of the Cumberlands for a doubleheader, while on the following day they will entertain Shawnee State University for a single game. On March 8-9, AUM will welcome True -McConnell to the AUM Baseball Complex for the fi rst mee ng between the two schools.

Following a 38-24 record in 2012 and consecu ve NAIA Opening Round Tournament appearances, the Auburn Montgomery baseball team will have a new look in 2013. The War-hawks welcome 20 newcomers, yet expecta ons s ll remain high for the team this season. AUM will look to replace 18 seniors from 2012, including 11 pitchers and nine starters on off ense. In addi on to the loss of leadership, produc on was also lost, as only 37 1/3 com-bined innings return from a rota on that threw nearly 500 innings. Off ensively, the Warhawks return just 109 of their 590 hits from last year. “We had a lot of seniors last season, es-pecially on the pitching staff ,” AUM fi rst-year assistant coach Clay Booth said. “Posi on players are tough to replace as well, but the amount of innings our senior pitchers threw last year will be incredibly diffi cult to replace.” Despite the departures in the rota on, Booth feels confi dent in the team’s three top return-ing op ons, seniors Will Ruffi n, Eran Franks and Blake Woo. He also noted the addi on of two newcomers, junior-college transfer Chad Reeves and sophomore Daniel Farrar. Farrar spent last season at AUM, but did not par cipate in any games for the Warhawks. At the plate, the Warhawks will rely heav-ily on seniors Wes Hughes, Shane Turner and Branden Kelley (a trio which combined to start 96 games last year) for leadership. “Off ensively, we don’t have a lot of power, but we have guys who can put the ball in play,” Booth said. “We will be able to run the bases well and will likely put runners in mo on a lot more. Even without a big home-run hi er, I think we can be a very good off ensive team.”

Turner fi nished the season second on the team in RBIs (35) and doubles (15), while ranking third in home runs with seven. Hughes was third on the team with a .333 ba ng average, while Kelley was solid defensively and drove in seven runs.

“We don’t need Shane or Wes to try to do more than they did last year,” Booth added. “Shane was steady for us all year and Wes was unbelievable at ge ng a key hit when we needed it. They are both solid hi ers and I think each will have nice senior seasons if they do not press.” With the addi on of so many newcomers, camaraderie is usually a concern. Booth is confi -dent, however, that this team will have no issues with chemistry based on their a tudes during fall prac ce. “The team chemistry has been unbeliev-able. They get along great with each other and play well together. I think that will be really big considering the number of newcomers we have.” Although the number of unfamiliar faces is signifi cant, Booth says the key to the season is simple – don’t try to do too much. “The big thing for us this year is going to be ge ng the key hit and playing strong defense. If our guys do what they are capable of and don’t press, I think we can have some success. We have seen our pitchers throw and know they have the ability to keep us in games. As long as we do not beat ourselves, I think we will have a really nice year.”

The Catchers For the fi rst me since the 2008 season, the Warhawks will not have Michael Dugan as a regular starter behind the plate. However, Dugan has moved into a coaching capacity and will work directly with three talented players at the posi on in juniors Blake Bearden and Bre Well-man, as well as freshman Shelby Nobles. “Michael Dugan is a guy that is nearly impos-sible to replace, but we brought in a couple of junior college catchers to go along with Shelby Nobles,” Booth, a former AUM catcher himself, said. “Blake and Bre are both good defensively and provide us op ons off ensively. Coach [Q.V.] Lowe is big on matchups and rota ng catchers, so we have some fl exibility. Shelby will catch some innings for us this year, but can also use this year to get acclimated to the college game. With Dugan working with these guys, I think all three will be able to be key contributors for us.” Bearden joins the Warhawks from Northwest Florida State Community College, where he hit .272 with fi ve home runs and 39 RBIs in his two seasons with the Raiders. Wellman spent the past two years at Shelton State Community College, where he helped the Bucs to a 39-21 record, the state championship and a third-place fi nish at the NJCAA World Series as a sopho-more. Nobles, a local prep standout from We-tumpka High School, redshirted last season with the Warhawks as he recovered from an injury.

The Infi eld The Warhawks lost all four primary starters on the infi eld from last season in Logan Remson, Jorden Johnson, Chezz McCann and Hunter Cross. With the return of Kelley and Hughes, however, AUM has its star ng shortstop and third baseman in place. Kelley appeared in 47 games last year, star ng

17 mes. He hit .245 in 49 plate appearances, with two doubles, two triples and seven runs ba ed in, and is slated as the star ng shortstop for the Warhawks. “Branden has paid his dues and knows how we expect things to be done,” Booth said of Kel-ley. “I think he had a li le trouble with platoon-ing last year, but is now in a posi on to start every day. He had a couple big hits for us last year and con nues to improve off ensively. We aren’t asking him to hit .400 this year, but just to play sound defense and make the rou ne plays.” Hughes enters the spring as the starter at third base, following a junior campaign in which he hit .333 with four triples and 13 RBIs. Perhaps his biggest contribu on last season was his pinch-hi ng heroics, where he was 6-of-13 on the season. “Wes is the sparkplug of our team,” Booth said. “He was the guy last year that always got the big hit when we needed. He is a grinder who, even when he gets out, has a great ap-proach at the plate. He will hit right in the meat of our lineup and will make everyone around him a be er player.” On the right side of the infi eld, the Warhawks will also rely on the familiar names of Chad Mansmann at second base and Bryan Young at fi rst base. Mansmann, who did not play in 2012, hit .293 in 36 games in 2011 at AUM. He drove in six runs, had three doubles and stole nine bases, while playing solid defense in his 31 starts. “Chad is a key guy to have back in our lineup,” Booth said. “When he gets hot off ensively, he is tough to get out. He is very talka ve defensively and keeps the guys loose. He is a great team guy. I think the star ng posi on is his for the taking.” Young spent the past two seasons learning from Remson at fi rst base and enters the year as the an cipated starter at the posi on. The redshirt sophomore drove in six runs in 28 plate appearances last season, but saw ac on in 25 games.

“The fi rst base job is Bryan’s to lose,” said Booth. “He will have some bumps along the way, but will give you everything he has every day and he is incredibly coachable. He has the ability to be a good hi er for us and could end up hit- ng in the middle of our lineup. He is also a big

kid, so he is a good target for our guys to throw to.” Providing depth around the infi eld will be freshman Brandon Pooler, a natural shortstop from Sparkman High School in Huntsville. Pooler is also able to play second base when needed. Along with Pooler, the Warhawks will rely on Bearden and junior David Carter at the corners. “Brandon is a young player, but is very ath-le c,” Booth said. “He has to con nue to make adjustments off ensively, but we like the fl ex-ibility he provides us by being able to play both shortstop and second base.”

The Ou ield The Warhawks return Turner in right fi eld, but will look to replace the loss of Brian Wheeler and Rusty Todd in center fi eld and le fi eld, respec- vely.

Turner started 57 games last season and responded by earning Second-Team All-Southern States Athle c Conference honors. He posted a .323 ba ng average, while ranking among the team leaders in nearly every off ensive category. “Shane was a very pleasant surprise last year,” Booth said. “He pressed a li le early in the fall, but se led down and simplifi ed things toward the end. He is a very good hi er and has some pop in his bat. The only thing we are asking of him is to not try to do too much.” Junior newcomers Josh Thompson and Hayden Hillyer are projected as the replace-ments for Wheeler and Todd. Thompson joins the team from Lurleen B. Wallace Community College, while Hillyer spent the past two seasons playing at Troy University. “Hayden and Josh are both guys who can play all three ou ield posi ons,” Booth said. “Hayden

had a steady fall. He covers a lot of ground in the ou ield and knows how to hit. He is the kind of player that will get an opportunity and run with it. Josh had an outstanding fall and is one of the fi rst true leadoff hi ers we have had in the past few years. He is scrappy and will do whatever it takes to get on base. His speed puts a lot of pressure on the opposing defense. He is always a threat to steal a base.” Carter will also provide depth in the ou ield, but will likely serve as the team’s regular desig-nated hi er. “David hit a few home runs for us during our Fall World Series, but he has some holes in his swing,” Booth said. “However, he is so strong that he can get around a lot of those. If he comes in and doesn’t try to do too much, he could be a big force in our lineup.”

The Pitchers Easily the biggest ques on mark on the team, the pitching staff returns just three of its starts from last season, all of which were by Woo. Following a strong fall season, Franks fi gures to contend for a spot in the conference rota on for the team. He tossed just three innings last season, but is a fi erce compe tor on the mound. Woo made 10 appearances last year, pos ng a 1-3 record and a 5.79 earned-run average. “This year we have a couple of returning le ies in Eran and Blake that we will count on to step up,” Booth said. “Eran had a really good fall and showed he can command the zone. Blake is a guy who will throw a lot of strikes and allow his defense to make plays around him. Both of these guys are cra y pitchers and bulldogs on the mound.” Also returning is Ruffi n, who made 14 appear-ances and posted a 7.04 ERA in 15 1/3 innings in 2012. “Will is going to be a big contributor to our staff ,” said Booth. “He struggled a li le last year a er we moved his arm slot, but he had a nice fall and has fi gured things out. He will throw in a variety of roles this year. He is a big compe tor and hates to lose. He wants the ball in his hand.” The Warhawks are also expec ng big things from Reeves and Farrar, both hard throwers. Reeves comes to AUM from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, while Farrar trans-ferred from Central Alabama Community College following the 2011 season. “Chad is one of our harder throwers,” Booth said of Reeves. “He has three pitches he can throw for a strike and he has a great mentality on the mound. He is a gamer. “Daniel is a guy we think has the tools to be our top starter. He is a hard thrower and has a cu er that is tough for righ es or le ies to hit.” Addi onal star ng op ons include senior transfer Patrick Devault and junior Spencer Youmans. Devault joins the Warhawks from Co-lumbus State University, while Youmans pitched two seasons at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College. “Spencer struggled a li le early, but threw really well for us during the Fall World Series,” Booth added. “He can start or pitch in relief.

He pounds the zone and has three pitches he can throw. Patrick struggled a li le this fall, but Coach Lowe worked on his arm angle and he re-ally responded well. He is a guy who could start some midweek games for us or give us some valuable innings out of the bullpen in conference series. I see him as a bridge between our starters and closer.” In the bullpen, AUM will look to a pair of true freshmen, as well as a pair of junior college transfers. Ma Hand, named the 1A-4A All-Metro Player of the Year by the Montgomery Adver ser as a senior at Marbury High School, as well as Clay Gidley from Hokes Bluff High School will each see ac on in their fi rst collegiate season. “Ma is very decep ve,” Booth said. “I think he will be a change of pace guy who can go through an opposing lineup once following a hard thrower. Even as a freshman, he is not afraid of challenging hi ers. Clay is a walk-on, but had a great fall. He is a big kid and throws a heavy ball. He will come right a er you and throws a lot of strikes. He is young, but I think he will throw some innings for us this year. Erik Lawrence (Wallace-Selma) and Bri Wil-son (Lurleen B. Wallace) will hold down the back of the bullpen, with Wilson likely working as the Warhawks’ closer. “If Erik fi gures things out, he is capable of being a huge contributor for us,” said Booth. “He is a side-arm guy who loves to compete. If he is around the zone, he is very tough to hit. Bri works very fast and is very athle c. He has an unbelievable breaking ball and could likely be our closer. He doesn’t get bothered on the mound and can throw on back-to-back days.”

HEAD COACH Q.V. LOWE

With more than 40 years of baseball experience and more than 1,100 career victories, Q.V. Lowe is the only man AUM has ever known as the leader of its baseball program. In 1986, Lowe was chosen to build the AUM baseball program from scratch and has answered with a 1,003-539-4 record. In his me at AUM, the Warhawks have made three trips to the NAIA World Series fi nals and won six conference tles. During his tenure, Lowe has coached 76 all-conference performers, 40 all-area or all-region selec ons and 32 NAIA All-Americans. In addi on, Lowe has coached more than 25 players who have played in some type of professional baseball league. Lowe’s inaugural program struggled, as the youthful team fi nished with just an 8-27 mark. However, by his third season at the helm, the Warhawks improved to win nearly 60 percent of their games and have not had a losing season since. In 1990, Lowe helped the Warhawks to the fi rst NAIA World Series appearance in school history, leading AUM to a 40-26 record and an appearance in the Na onal Championship

game. During their magical season, the Warhawks earned the District 27 and Area 5 Championships, while Lowe earned District, Area and NAIA Coach of the Year honors. Two seasons later, the Warhawks were back in the World Series a er Lowe guided the team to the fi rst of four seasons in which AUM won 50 or more games. The Senators fi nished 1992 with a 50-18 overall record. AUM earned its second District and Area Championship, with Lowe selected the Coach of the Year in each, as well as the Diamond Na onal Coach of the Year. During the next 13 seasons at AUM, the Warhawks won 40 or more games seven mes and averaged nearly 42 wins during the stretch. However, Lowe and AUM were unable to return to the World Series. The Warhawks won fi ve conference championships, while Lowe was named the Southern States Athle c Conference Coach of the Year in 1995, Louisville Slugger Regional Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1998, and the Georgia-Alabama-Caro-lina Coach of the Year in 2000. In 2006, the Warhawks won both the SSAC and the Region XIII Champion-ship and earned a third trip to the NAIA World Series, where they advanced to the na onal quarterfi nals.

In 2008, Lowe earned his 1,000th career coaching victory, while in 2009, the Warhawks made an appearance in the NAIA Na onal Tournament Open-ing Round. During the 2011 season, Lowe helped the Warhawks to a 42-19 record and a return-appearance to the NAIA Na onal Tournament. The skipper helped AUM to a 16-2 record in the extremely compe ve West Di-vision of the SSAC and a 30-7 record in its fi nal 37 games. For his accomplish-ments, he was selected the league’s Coach of the Year. Last year, AUM posted a 38-24 record and recorded his 1,000th vic-tory with the program. ing Second-Team NAIA All-American Cody Hall. Lowe began playing baseball as a youngster in Ocala, Fla., eventually becoming an all-state pitcher for Ocala High School. He compiled a three-year record of 23-3, including a perfect 10-0 senior campaign. A er high school, he moved on to the junior college ranks, where he posted an 18-5 mark at Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Fla. He earned back-to-back All-Conference and All-America honors and helped lead his team to the Junior Col-lege World Series in 1965, his freshman season. Lowe then transferred to Auburn University, where he played for legendary Auburn Head Coach Paul Nix. He fi nished his two-year career with the Tigers with a 23-3 record, including a sparkling 15-1 mark as a senior. During his fi nal collegiate sea-son, he helped Auburn to the 1967 NCAA College World Series, was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and earned All-America honors. Lowe s ll has his name etched in the Auburn record book, holding the Tiger record for lowest career earned run average (1.69) and highest career winning percentage (.885). His 10 com-plete games during his senior season is ed for the best total in school annals, while he holds the season (5.40) and career (5.87) record for hits allowed per nine innings. Following his standout college career, Lowe was selected in the 19th round of the 1967 Amateur Dra by the Chicago Cubs. A er eight seasons in the organiza on, he opted for a coaching career and landed his fi rst posi on at Lurleen B. Wallace Junior College in Andalusia, Ala., in 1975. While at LBW, Lowe compiled a 179-101 record before returning to professional baseball as a full- me coach with the Yankees in 1982. He moved to the Montreal Expos system in 1985, serving as a minor league pitching instructor. Lowe was inducted into the Auburn University Tiger Walk Hall of Fame in 1998 and was inducted into the Alabama Base-ball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2011, he became the fi rst AUM head coach selected to the NAIA Hall of Fame, while he was also named the 2007 Alabama Baseball Coaches Associa on College Coach of the Year. Lowe and his wife, Ginger, reside in Wetumpka. He has one son, Josh, who played for AUM for two seasons.

ASSISTANT COACH CLAY BOOTH

Clay Booth is beginning his fi rst year as an assistant coach with the Warhawk program. During the previous three seasons, Booth worked as a graduate assistant coach with head coach Q.V. Lowe and former long- me associate head coach Marty Lovrich. In his fi rst three seasons on the coaching staff , Booth helped the Warhawks to a 107-67 record, good for a .615 winning percentage. He has assisted with AUM making two NAIA Opening Round Tournament appearances and has coached eight all-conference performers, two All-West Division selec ons and one NAIA All-American. Booth, who worked primarily with the catchers as a graduate assistant, also helped current graduate assistant Michael Dugan to three SSAC Gold Glove awards and a pair of all-conference honors. Booth joined the coaching staff following a successful two-year playing career at AUM.

A member of the 2009 AUM team which advanced to the NAIA Baseball Na onal Championship Opening Round, he appeared in 80 career games for the Warhawks, fi nishing with a .291 career ba ng average. He recorded 12 doubles and four home runs, while driving in 46 runs. Prior to his arrival at AUM, Booth was a two-year le erwinner at Shelton State Community College, where he helped the Bucs to a fourth-place fi nish at the Junior College World Series as a senior. During his career at SSCC, Booth posted a .296 ba ng average with 11 doubles and 41 runs ba ed in. A na ve of Tuscaloosa, Booth prepped at Tuscaloosa High School, where he played for head coach Kenny Burns. He is the son of Billy and Tracey Booth. He has one sister, Ashley, and one brother, Bre , who plays baseball for the University of Alabama. He earned his bachelor’s degree from AUM in second-ary educa on and sports leadership in 2010.

Following a standout playing career, Michael Dugan joins the baseball coaching staff for his fi rst season as a graduate assistant coach. A former three- me all-conference selec on, Dugan appeared in 189 games during his career with the Warhawks, pos ng a .325 bat- ng average and hi ng eight home runs. He drove in 89 runs and fi nished his career with 190 hits, a mark which ranks ninth all- me

at AUM. Defensively, he commi ed just 12 errors in 1,318 total opportuni es and played a key role in the success of the pitching staff . He also won three SSAC Gold Gloves. Academically, he excelled as well, earning SSAC All-Academic honors three mes, NAIA Scholar Athlete honors twice and Capital One All-District honors twice. A na ve of Montgomery, Dugan joined the Warhawks following a highly-decorated prep career at Jeff erson Davis High School. The valedictorian of his senior class, he is scheduled to earn his bachelor’s degree from AUM in chemistry this summer. He is the son of James and Kathy Dugan.

Josh Smith returns to the Warhawks for his fi rst season as a volunteer assistant coach, a er le ering for the team for two years. Dur-ing his tenure at AUM, Smith posted a 10-2 record and a 3.96 earned run average in 29 appearances. In 102 1/3 innings, he allowed just 94 hits, while striking out 76. He allowed opponents to hit just .245 during his career. Prior to joining the Warhawks, Smith played two seasons at Enterprise State Community College. Before entering the college ranks, the Jack, Ala., na ve was a three-sport stand-out at Zion Chapel High School, where he holds the school record for career strikeouts, ERA and victories. A 2011 graduate of AUM, Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in human resources and management. The son of Alan and Lisa Smith, he hopes to begin work on his master’s degree at AUM in the fall of 2013.

Jake Jinright enters his third season as a manager for the AUM baseball program. Jinright is currently a junior criminal science major. He came to AUM a er gradua ng from Edgewood Academy in 2010. While at Edgewood he played four seasons of basketball for the Wildcats. Prior to his a endance at Edgewood, he spent one year at Wetumpka High School, where he played baseball for the Indians. He is the son of Steve and Danielle Jinright and currently resides in Wetumpka. In his free me, he enjoys hun ng and fi shing.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITYA broad-based academic ins tu on, Auburn University at Mont-gomery is organized into fi ve schools - Business, Educa on, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences. The genesis of the ins tu on came a er a request from the ci zens of the Montgomery area to establish an addi onal degree-gran ng ins tu on. Auburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 and the fi rst classes were off ered in 1969. Originally housed in several build-ings downtown, 500 acres in east Montgomery were purchased in 1971 so the campus could move to a loca on where it could grow. In 1973, the Southern Associa on of Colleges and Schools accredited AUM as an opera onally separate ins tu on. The Auburn University Board of Trustees maintains responsibility for governance of AUM.

ATHLETIC EXCELLENCEWarhawks athle c teams have a championship reputa on in NAIA Division I and Southern States Ath-le c Conference sports. Our men’s and women’s tennis teams have won 21 na onal championships. Men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and so ball have compe ve histories as well, and our new men’s and women’s cross country teams are building one.

Auburn Montgomery Chancellor John G. Veres III is no stranger to AUM, having received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology in 1976 and 1978, and he has worked for over 30 years with the university. Veres has been serv-ing as chancellor since his appointment in May 2006.

“I’m proud to be an AUM graduate and the fi rst graduate of AUM to have the opportunity to serve the university as chancellor,” says Veres. For six years prior to becoming chancellor, Veres was execu ve director of AUM’s University Outreach, which conducts applied re-search and provides consul ng services, including economic forecas ng, equal employment opportunity and public policy forma on. The division’s Center for Advanced Technologies, Center for Business and Economic Development, Center for Demographic Research and Center for Government and Public Af-fairs manage annually more than $9 million in contracts.

Veres received his Ph.D. in Industrial/Or-ganiza onal Psychology in 1983 and has published extensively on human resourc-es management topics, including over 40 ar cles in scholarly journals, as well as nine book chapters, two edited volumes,

numerous technical reports and a book en tled “The Challenge of Front Line Management: Fla ened Organiza ons in the New Economy.” He has consulted in over 80 employment discrimina on lawsuits, tes fying on assessing adverse impact, selec on procedure validity and other issues on equal employment op-portunity. He currently serves as special master to Federal District Judge C. Lyn-wood Smith in the Northern District of Alabama, and has served as the Court’s expert to federal district courts in Arkan-sas and Georgia.

Veres has long been involved in com-munity aff airs. He currently serves on the boards of directors of the Alabama Technology Founda on, the Alabama World Aff airs Council, the Montgom-ery Area Chamber of Commerce, the Montgomery Area YMCA, the Catholic Housing Authority of Montgomery and the River Region United Way. Veres was also the inaugural recipient of the Non-profi t Leadership Alliance’s H. Roe Bartle Presiden al Leadership Award, an award

presented for support of nonprofi t man-agement educa on.

Veres is married to the former Beth Louise Sullivan. They have three chil-dren – Erin, John and Olivia – and two grandchildren, Cole and Lena.

Steve Crotz is currently in his fi h year as Athle c Director at Auburn Montgomery, a er serving two s nts as the interim athle c director, fi rst in 2002-03 and again from 2006-08. During his tenure, AUM teams have fl ourished, programs established, and fa-cili es improved. Student-athletes have also been a stalwart in the community and excelled in the classroom. Under his guidance, eight of AUM’s 10 sports have spent me in their respec ve NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Polls and teams have won four na onal championships. In addi on, 158 student-athletes have earned All-Conference, All-Division or All-Freshman team honors, while 70 have garnered All-American honors. AUM has added a so ball program, as well as men’s and women’s cross country programs, increasing its number of varsity sports to 10. The cross country team ran its fi rst meet in the Fall of 2011 and will compete in the Southern States Athle c Conference of the NAIA. Crotz has overseen several facility upgrades, including the renova on of the basketball gymnasium to include a sec on of 304 cushioned, chair-backed seats on the home side of the court, the building of a new state-of-the-art press box at the AUM So ball Complex and the re-surfacing of all 12 tennis courts at the AUM Tennis Complex. Upgrades to the So ball Complex also included bleacher sea ng for more than 200 spectators directly behind home plate, restrooms, a concession stand, a press area and increased storage.

In the classroom, student-athletes have been equally impressive, as 135 athletes have earned All-Academic honors from the SSAC and 45 have been named NAIA Scholar Athletes. Three AUM student-athletes, women’s basketball standouts Haley McIntyre and Carlie Ainsworth, and men’s basketball’s David Gallagher, have been named the SSAC Honor Student Athlete. Within the community, staff , coaches and student-athletes have logged be er than 750 hours of service. Crotz has worked with the AUM administra on to expand the athle c department staff to include a head and assistant so ball coach and an athle c trainer. He has also spent the past two years serving as the chair of the Board of Athle c Directors within the Southern States Athle c Conference. For his ef-forts during the 2010-11 academic year, Crotz was selected the SSAC Athle c Director of the Year. Before focusing on administra on, Crotz served 12 seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn Montgomery. Crotz compiled a record of 284-116 while at AUM, winning four regular sea-son conference champi-onships, two conference tournament tles, and advancing to the NAIA Na onal Tournament 10 mes. Crotz was a 10- me conference/region

coach of the year and was named the Ikon/Women’s Basketball Coaches As-socia on Na onal Coach of the Year following his team’s Elite Eight fi nish in the 1999-00 season. Prior to AUM, Crotz spent fi ve years as ath-le c director and six years as head women’s bas-

ketball coach at Lindenwood University. While at LU, Crotz earned 126 wins and led the Lady Lions to three consecu ve NAIA Na onal Tournament appearances.During his six years at the St. Charles, Mo., ins tu on, he was named Ameri-can Midwest Conference Coach-of-the-Year on four occasions. In October 2009, he was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame. Crotz also spent nine years at Brentwood High School overseeing the girls’ basketball program and winning 210 games. Five mes during that span he led Brentwood to the Missouri State Tournament where they won the state tournament in 1985 and fi nished as the runners-up in 1986 and 1990. For his eff orts, Crotz was named the Missouri High School Coach-of-the-Year in 1985. Crotz received his bachelor’s degree in educa on from the University of Mis-souri in 1979 and his master’s degree in secondary educa on from Missouri-St. Louis in 1984. He and his wife, the for-mer Daphne Hozee, reside in Montgom-ery with their two children, Kelsey and Jacob.

Since the installa on of its athle c department in 1975, Auburn University at

Montgomery has been known throughout the NAIA for its compe veness on the

fi eld and court of play. Furthermore, AUM off ers some of the best facili es in the

Southeast to accommodate that compe ve spirit.

The AUM Gymnasium serves as the venue for all AUM men’s and women’s bas-

ketball home games. Originally built in 1976, the gymnasium underwent a face-li

during the summer of 2010. Renova ons included a refi nishing of the gym fl oor,

the installa on of new bleachers and new chair-back sea ng, bringing the upgraded

capacity to 2,760.

The newest addi on to the list of AUM athle cs facili es comes with the newly

built on-campus so ball fi eld, on which the AUM so ball team was able to play all

home games during the 2010 season. The fi eld is part of the AUM So ball Complex,

which includes a new state-of-the-art press box, concessions stand and restrooms,

which was completed early in 2012.

The AUM Tennis Complex, also built in 1976, features a newly refi nished playing

surface for each of its 10 courts. Aside from serving as the site for all AUM men’s

and women’s home tennis matches, the AUM Tennis Complex also serves as a host

site for the annual Small College Blue & Gray Classic held by the City of Montgomery.

The AUM Soccer Complex has undergone several updates since its construc on

in 1985. In the early 2000s new Olympic-style goals were installed along with a new

scoreboard in 2006. Several landscaping renova ons have taken place at the facility

as well.

The AUM Baseball Complex serves as the home fi eld for Warhawks baseball and

features stadium sea ng, a grandstand, press box and concessions stand for the

convenience of AUM baseball fans. The complex has served as host site for the NAIA

Region XIII Tournament in 2006, the 2007 SSAC Baseball tournament and the 2011

NAIA Opening Round Baseball Tournament.

The 2012-13 academic year marks the 13th year for Auburn Montgomery athle cs compe ng as a member of the Southern States Athle c Conference (SSAC). In 2010, the conference announced an expansion and now showcases 15 member ins tu ons located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsors 13 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, so ball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. The conference staff features Interim Commissioner Jonathan Wojciechowski, Sports Informa- on Director Tyler Hyde, and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton.

The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athle cs Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athle c Conference and remained so un l 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the offi cial name was again changed to the Southern States Athle c Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of compe on, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member ins tu ons. Since the conference’s incep on and affi lia on with the NAIA, 26 SSAC teams and 11 individuals have claimed na onal tles, while 22 teams have fi nished na onal runners-up. Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the Na onal Associa on of Intercollegiate Athle cs (NAIA) since 1975. In those 36 years, AUM has claimed 21 na onal champion-ships and six of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a na onal championship game.

The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a na onal organiza on with nearly 300 ins tu onal members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athle cs. Since its introduc on of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering fi rst-rate athle cs programs. The NAIA has con nuously affi rmed its commitment to equality by becoming the fi rst na onal organiza on to off er ins tu onal postsea-

son opportuni es to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow ins tu onal membership to historically black ins tu ons in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establish-ment of athle cs programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by suppor ng academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and ac vity as an opportunity to inten onally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the fi ve core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefi t of each individu-al. In addi on, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA ins tu on’s commitment to the ini a ve with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in compe on, academic focus, character recogni on and character promo on. Last year, AUM was one of 220 schools recognized as a Five Star ins tu on a er earning 80 points on a 100-point scale, the 42nd-best total in the country.
