What to expect at Upper Iowa University Upper Iowa University is Iowa’s largest private, independent not-for-profit university providing qua lity education with multi-faceted learning opportunities through undergraduate and graduate degree programs and leadership opportunities to about 6,200 students – nationally and internationally – at its residential Fayette campus, through learning centers worldwide and through distance education programs. What can a student expect at Upper Iowa University? Upper Iowa offers a rich academic and campus life, including:
• Student to faculty ratio of 13:1 – this allows for more one-on-one attention with faculty and all the help you need to succeed to prepare you for your future. Our average class size is 24.
• Modified semester schedule - two 8-week terms per semester and an optional 3-week May term. The 8-week format allows most students to concentrate on two courses at a time, while still maintaining full-time status. UIU offers more than 40 majors.
• Enhanced student learning – A modern, high-performance green Liberal Arts building was built in 2010, as well as suite-style housing for students designed to provide safety and independence while helping to accommodate growing enrollment. To offer students a splendid environment in which to eat, relax and socialize, a new Student Center opened in 2011. More suite-style housing is expected to be ready this fall, and ground-breaking for a new Division of Science and Mathematics building is slated for Spring 2013.
UIU is investing $100 million university-wide projects, which so far includes five new buildings on the residential campus, as well as major renovation of the football stadium into the state-of-the-art Ha rms- Eischeid Stadium – it’s never been a better time to be a Peacock! UIU has competitive tuition and an aggressive approach to financial aid. Nearly every undergraduate student on campus who is eligible, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), receives financial assistance. UIU offers a variety of endowed, institutional and athletic scholarships and works to increase the amount of scholarship money available. For example, Team Peacock has raised more than $1.4 million, surpassing its goal. This team of alumni, students, staff and faculty donate money themselves and raise funds by participating in RAGBRAI each summer. The result of the University’s emphasis on increasing affordability is that UIU students, on average, gr aduate with less debt from the Fayette campus than most other students in Iowa. This year, Upper Iowa University celebrates its 155th anniversary. UIU combines the best of traditio n with incredible new experiences for learning and living. . Ellsworth student success rate is impressive!
What are you looking for in a college? You may or may not have a degree program in mind, but for most students graduating and/or transferring credits are at the top of the list. You need to know that CNNMoney.com has ranked Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls as having the 19th highest student success rate (graduation rate + transfer rate) in the entire nation. That means Ellsworth is better able to help you meet that goal than 1,646 of the 1,665 community colleges in the country! Need to know more? According to the Iowa College Student Aid Commission, ECC students graduate with a lower average student debt load than students at any other Iowa college, public or private. That’s because ECC and the Ellsworth College Foundation offer one of the most generous scholarship programs in the Midwest. You can compare tuition and fees at various colleges, but until you’ve applied for admission and scholarships, you don’t have the complete picture. Want to earn a degree and be ready for the workforce in two years or less? ECC offers one- year and two-year degree programs in Accounting, Agribusiness, Agriculture, Animal Science, Apparel Merchandising, Biotechnology, Computer Applications in Business, Conservation Technology, Construction Technology, Criminal Justice, Equine Management, Farm Management, Marketing, Medical Assistant, Medical Office Practitioner, Merchandising & Retail Management, Nursing (Practical & Associate Degree), Precision Agriculture, Renewable Energy Technology, and Swine Management.
If you know you’ll need a bachelor’s degree or higher for your career, it makes sense to start at Ellsworth Community College. With nearly 80 degree programs, more than 70 percent of ECC students transfer their credits to a four-year institution to complete a bachelor’s degree. One reason so many students choose to start their college experience at Ellsworth is because ECC has dual enrollment agreements with the University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa, and Iowa State University. That means when you enroll at ECC, you can also be enrolled at one of the Regent universities at the same time. Dual enrollment gives ECC students access to academic advising, library resources, athletic events, and all the other amenities of the state universities. At ECC it’s not just about transferability of courses, it’s about the quality of our instruction. Our nursing graduates have a 100% passing rate on their state board exams (compared to a state average of 84%). Our equestrian program is currently ranked second in the nation by HorseSchool.com. ECC’s agriculture program was recently named as one of six outstanding ag education programs nationwide by the National Association of Agricultural Educators. And there are lots of equally good things to say about ALL of our degree programs! Seeing is believing, so ECC offers Panther Preview Days for prospective students. For Panther Preview dates/times or to reserve a space for yourself and a parent or friend, contact the ECC Admissions Office at 641-648-4611 or 800-322-9235 or e-mail [email protected] . WEST DES MOINES, IOWA (September 20, 2011)
— As high school graduation, and the expense of a
college education, approaches, many students feel
pressure to obtain as many scholarships as they can.
And for a good reason — a scholarship is generally
thought of as “free money” for college. As long as
the recipient continues to meet the qualifications, the
money never needs to be repaid.
Unfortunately, high school students typically wait
until their senior year before they begin the
scholarship search, only to find they could have
qualified for far more if they had been able to prepare
more or knew the qualifications in advance.
Although it seems early, sophomores and juniors can
improve their chances of earning scholarships with
these tips from the Iowa College Access Network®
(ICAN).
Research opportunities. Start looking for
scholarships now. Although you may not be able to
apply until your senior year, you can find out what
the eligibility requirements are. You may become
more eligible by taking a particular class, serving a
few community service hours or learning more about
a relevant topic now. You can also begin a file of
possible opportunities to follow up on later, saving
valuable time during your senior year. Don’t slow
down your search either. Plan to spend several hours
each month from now through college looking for
new opportunities.
Improve your grades. Unless you’re already
making straight A’s in the most challenging courses
your school offers, you can always improve your
grades. Not all scholarships are based on academic
achievement, but having a strong GPA won’t hurt
your eligibility. You’ll improve your chances for
many scholarships while learning valuable study and
organizational skills. Athletic scholarships carry
specific academic requirements as well; visit
www.ncaaclearinghouse.com to learn more.
Get involved. You’ve probably heard this many
times before, but becoming involved in some
extracurricular activities that most interest you will
benefit not only your scholarship chances, but many
aspects of your life. You may become eligible for
scholarships based partially or completely on your
participation, your leadership experience or specific
skills learned through the activities.
Gain experience. Become more skilled in areas
rewarded by the scholarships you’re interested in.
This might be athletic ability, fine arts performance,
leadership skills or other qualifications. You can also
gain experience through volunteer and internship
opportunities, part-time jobs and extracurricular
activities.
Practice filling out applications. Make sure you
know how to answer the questions clearly and
concisely and write effective essays. Go ahead and
prepare essays now to be refined later too.
Organize your materials. Keep a binder of
scholarship opportunities, applications, essays and
letters of recommendation. Organize the applications
by deadline to make sure you submit them in a timely
manner as you approach graduation. Also note which
essays can be tweaked for several applications and
which ones suit only a specific scholarship.
Apply for as many as you can. The best way to
improve your chances of qualifying for scholarships
is to submit as many applications as you can. Find
opportunities through your school counselor, local
businesses and organizations, employers, national
and state associations, colleges and Internet searches.
Remember to use only free online searches like the
ones at www.ICANsucceed.org, www.fastweb.com
and www.ihaveaplaniowa.org.
Don’t be afraid to ask. If you come across a
potential opportunity but can’t locate an application,
contact the organization. Even if you need to send a
self-addressed stamped envelope to receive an
application, the potential payoff is well worth a bit of
time and effort.
Finally, remember that all these actions will benefit
you in many ways. Make decisions that are right for
you, rather than right for scholarship applications
alone. Becoming more rounded, active and prepared
will automatically make you a stronger scholarship
candidate.

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA (September 20, 2011)
— As high school students settle into the new school
year, the Iowa College Access Network (ICAN)
encourages them to visit their school counselors.
This advice may seem obvious for seniors planning
to attend college, but younger students can benefit
from a productive meeting as well.
“We’re not asking them to just stop in and say hi,”
said Jessica Schultz, ICAN outreach representative.
“We talked to school counselors to find out what
students should do to make the most of the meetings.
Whether or not they are planning to attend college,
students, even freshmen, should take certain steps to
get the full benefit of their counselor’s expertise.”
Advice from school counselors around Iowa
includes:
Make an appointment. Letting the counselor know
ahead of time what you want to discuss means the
appropriate information and materials are available.
An appointment is also less likely to be interrupted.
Act early. As soon as you have a good idea of what
you plan to do after high school, meet with your
counselor to make sure you’re taking the right
courses. If you’re planning to attend college, your
counselor can steer you to the classes universities
require for admittance. They may be able to help you
take Advanced Placement® or dual-enrollment
classes that will let you earn college credit. If you’re
thinking about a technical or community college
education, you can get information on those options
from your counselor as well.
Counselors can also help students who plan to enter
the workforce right out of high school. The guidance
office has the resources to help with job shadowing,
internship and part-time employment opportunities.
Create a resume. You may not think a resume is
necessary until it’s time to apply for a job or college,
but such a list of accomplishments, community
service, involvement in school or civic groups, and
other endeavors will let your counselor know what
you’re interested in. When a scholarship or award
opportunity crosses the guidance desk, your
counselor is much more likely to nominate or alert
you if they know you’re a good candidate.
Allow plenty of time. If you need your counselor to
write a letter of recommendation or fill out an
application, plan to give them at least two weeks. This
allows them time to think about you and how to best
represent you.
Get involved. Counselors say that you should
actively participate in planning your academic and
professional careers to get the most out of high school
and beyond. The Internet allows you to find out about
careers, search for and select colleges, discover
scholarship and grant opportunities, and explore
financial aid options. Your school counselor can help
you find the best ways to search, including using
Choices®, Iowa’s designated career information and
decision-making program.

16 College Guide • October 2012
WEST DES MOINES, IOWA (September 20, 2011)
— Now that you’re in high school and have classes
under control, have you started thinking about what
comes after these four years? It’s never too early, or
too late, to start planning for your future. Do you
want to go to college? Are you planning on joining
the military, or will you start working right away? Is
there a career you dream of pursuing, like being a
doctor, teacher, journalist or graphic designer?
As the new school year gets under way, it’s a perfect
time to start preparing for life after high school.
Thinking about the career you want can help you
make other decisions, like if you should go to
college, what classes you should take and maybe
even where you should look for a part-time job
during your high school years.
Think about what you like to do. Make a list of
things you’re good at, such as the classes you’re
doing the best in and extracurricular activities that
you enjoy. Include activities and pursuits you’re
interested in, like hobbies. Don’t forget about your
values (for example, do you want to make a lot of
money or is helping others more important?).
Organizing your thoughts is a great first step toward
thinking about what you want to do after high school.
Research using I Have A Plan Iowa®. I Have a
Plan Iowa is the state’s designated career-
management system. It’s an online program that
helps you compare and choose from a network of
education and career options. Visit
www.ihaveaplaniowa.gov to begin your research.
Look into careers that interest you. Find out as
much as you can about these careers by researching
them online and talking to adults you know in these
fields. Pay a visit to your school counselor and ask
your family members and adult mentors for advice
on your search, too.
Take the right classes. Make sure you’re taking the
classes needed for graduation, and, if you’re
planning to go to college, the ones you will need for
college admission. Also take classes that appeal to
you and apply to your career interests.
Consider hands-on experience. If it’s possible,
spend a day job shadowing, or check out volunteer
opportunities that will give you experience in a field
you’re interested in pursuing. The experience will
look good on a resume or college admission
application and you’ll find out if that field is
something you’re good at and one you would enjoy.
Get a job that’s a career stepping stone. Choosing
the right summer job can give you a lot more than a
paycheck. Ideally, you want a job that’s in line with
your long-term career goals. It might require some
legwork to hunt down a summer job that’s a perfect
fit. For example, if you have set your sights on
becoming a marine biologist, it may be hard to find a
summer job in that field when you live in a land-
locked state. Some ways you could gain related
experience include working at a county conservation
office or a fish hatchery.

Before the test
Read. Read everything you can, as often as you can.
The act of reading increases your comprehension
and cognitive skills, even if you aren’t always
reading the most scholarly book around. (Best-
selling fiction can provide new perspective and
vocabulary.)
Practice. Practice isn’t just for band or basketball.
Take a few mock tests online at
www.number2.com or other free sites.
Review. Now that you know the types of questions
on the test, look over your old class notes and
information. Refresh your memory on algebraic
formulas and predicate nominatives. If you didn’t
understand it the first time, ask for help; it may
make more sense to you now.
Avoid “cramming.” Trying to pack your head full
of information two days before the test isn’t going
to help you; in fact it may increase your stress to
the point where you’ve hurt your chances. Instead,
review over weeks rather than hours.
Practice some more. Try taking mock pencil-and-
paper tests under real test-taking conditions. That
means no music, no snacks and no breaks in a
quiet, well-lit area. Check out your bookstore or
library for test prep books. Consider at least two
types of books: an official guide from the test
makers and a more general test prep book.
Strengthen your weakness. Especially if you have
limited time to prepare, concentrate on the subject
areas you’re weakest in.
Day of the test
Sleep well. Try to get eight hours of sleep the night
before the test. If you think nerves may keep you
up, make an early night of it two days before the
test too.
Dress for success. A suit and tie aren’t necessary,
but comfortable layers are a good idea. You don’t
want to be distracted by being too hot or an itchy
waistband while you’re taking the test.
Eat breakfast. Protein increases your ability to
concentrate, so have some meat, peanut butter or
eggs as part of an energizing breakfast.
Bring the right tools. Bring some soft lead no. 2
pencils with good erasers, not a mechanical pencil
or (gasp!) ink pen.
During the test
Neatness counts. Fill in blanks completely without
being messy. If you must change an answer, erase
thoroughly.
Choose your blanks. Math questions, for example,
tend to get more difficult the farther into the test
you are. If you find you can’t answer the last few
questions, take a shot at them but don’t spend a lot
of time. Extra minutes may be better spent making
sure you have the correct answers to the questions
you do know how to solve.
Make educated guesses. Some tests (like the SAT)
take points away for an incorrect answer but don’t
change your score for items left blank. While this
makes guessing seem like a bad choice, chances
are you’ll actually raise your score if you make
guesses after eliminating the most unlikely
choices.
Understand the instructions. Read instructions
carefully so you know what you’re looking for.
Test writers know the stress gets to students, and
some answer choices may trip up those who
rushed through directions.
Watch the clock. Try to be about halfway through a
section at half the time given for a test. For
example, if you need to finish a 100-question test
in an hour, you should have around 25 items
answered at 15 minutes and about 50 at 30
minutes.
Keep moving. If a question stumps you, don’t spend
too much time on it. Skip it for now and come back
when you’ve gotten through easier items.
Know what you’re looking for. Skim the questions
for a reading selection first. You’ll be surprised
how clear the answers are when you read the
selection.
Use all your time. While it may seem frustrating,
especially if you had to guess several times, use
any extra time to review your answers or fill in any
blank items. You may catch a silly mistake or
understand something more clearly the second
time through.

Provide letters of recommendation. ICAN
recommends that students ask a variety of adults who
know them well to write letters of recommendation.
These letters should detail some of the students’
accomplishments and personal history. Students
should allow at least two weeks for people to write
letters so they have the time to create a well-written
recommendation. Stamp said, “Teachers, coaches
and employers are good sources who can give a
perspective reviewers will appreciate. They can also
explain any shortcomings or provide reasons why
they think students will overcome them in college.”
Show enthusiasm. Students can talk to admissions
people, visit campuses and apply early to
demonstrate their desire to attend particular schools.
This kind of effort is one of the factors that can move
an application from a “potential” to an “admitted”
status if reviewers aren’t sure about a student’s
qualifications.
Meet all the requirements. Being creative and
enthusiastic can put students over the top, but only if
they’ve already done everything requested on the
application, Stamp said. Students should make sure
they have provided all the necessary documentation
and turned in the application on time. No spaces
should be left blank or incomplete. In addition to the
admissions application, students should complete
applications for both scholarships and government
aid. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal
Student Aid) should be filed after January 1 of a
student’s senior year, while scholarship applications
can be submitted throughout the fall and spring
semesters.
For more information on how to make their college
admissions applications stand out, students can
contact ICAN at (877) 272-4692 or visit
www.ICANsucceed.org.

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA (September 20, 2011)
— A few simple strategies can make college
admission applications a lot less intimidating for
high school students preparing for college, according
to experts at the Iowa College Access Network®
(ICAN).
“A lot of students just aren’t sure how to approach
applications and how to make theirs stand out,” said
Shea Stamp, an outreach representative at ICAN.
“That makes the whole process a little scary, so
sometimes they end up rushing through them or
putting them off.”
ICAN recommends that students spend a little time
using the following strategies to ease their fears and
increase their chances for admission.
Be prepared. The most important thing, Stamp said,
is to have a solid story to tell admission application
reviewers. This includes a history of good grades,
challenging classes and involvement in a variety of
activities.
Students should find ways to work their volunteer
and leadership experience and their achievements
into the application and essay. “If that list isn’t very
long, it’s not too late,” Stamp said. “They can spend
the next weekend volunteering and tell what they
learned.
“And, don’t forget the little things. Students learn a
lot from babysitting their siblings, mowing for
elderly neighbors and helping out at community
events,” Stamp added. Applicants should share those
lessons and how they demonstrated leadership.
Understand the process. ICAN encourages students
to learn more about the different types of
applications, application deadlines and the entire
admissions process before applying. ICAN’s website
provides more information and a list of deadlines for
Iowa colleges at www.ICANsucceed.org.
Write an original essay. Even if the application
provides the topic, students should take care to make
sure their essay is creative, is well thought out and
provides an insight into their personality and values.
ICAN suggests that students use the essay to promote
themselves as a mature person willing to work hard
or as one with unique abilities. “Also, make sure
other people review the essay and that there are no
errors,” said Stamp.
